09:22 *** Joins: Dappled (IceChat9@Pony-dsnf91.ok.cox.net)

09:27 <Cepheid> So, people are being charged exorbitant fees for cancelling a cloud service by Adobe.  Who could have possibly seen this coming?

09:28 * Dappled waves the pirate flag.

09:28 * Dappled doesn't actually use adobe outside of reading pdfs.

09:28 <Cepheid> Besides, you know, every techy out there with a shred of intelligence and self-control when it comes to any new tech concept.

09:28 <Cepheid> I knew moving services to the cloud would open a can of worms.

09:29 <Cepheid> But no, no, it had to be the big new thing tech geeks wanted to get into.

09:30 <ConfusionRift> Yeah, because I always wanted to turn what was published software into a service, and then a contract service.

09:32 <Cepheid> The cloud is useful for storing data, and that's about it.  And even then, I'm not sure I can trust the corporations behind it.

09:33 <Cepheid> Because it's almost guaranteed that if something goes wrong, or if the corporation decides to change it's mind, I could be ransomed for my data.

09:33 <ConfusionRift> And no one questioned why Adobe offered gave people CS1 for free, and then they removed it after announcing their cloud services.

09:36 <Cepheid> I won't deny the cloud has some use in application purposes.  For example, you don't need to install the software, so if the software is free and accessible, anyone can use it, regardless of platform.  But here's the thing about anything hosted on the Internet:  It's not free to host it.

09:37 <Cepheid> It costs money to run and maintain the server(s) hosting the software.

09:37 <Cepheid> Or the website itself.

09:38 <Cepheid> The bare-bones cost of hosting a service is electricity costs(money), maintenance costs(money), administrative costs(time and money), and the fee for a domain name(money).

09:39 <Cepheid> If you don't want to run the machine locally yourself, you can rely on a data center.

09:39 <Cepheid> At which point, you're paying a monthly fee for access to the data center, which is all-inclusive for electricity and some administrative(They'll power cycle the system, usually.)

09:40 <Cepheid> Also some space on their racks.

09:40 *** Quits: ArchPegasusMichael (Poni@Keep.In.A.Friendly.And.Pony.Place) (Quit: Leaving)

09:41 <Cepheid> The next step up is to use a hosting service.  This ranges from the cheap $10-15/mo for a virtual server, which is a VM instance on some server that is maintained by the data center of the hosting service.

09:41 <Cepheid> To upwards of... a few hundred a month for an actual, real server.

09:41 <Cepheid> This does not take into account a new fee.

09:41 <Cepheid> Since they're hosting everything now, bandwidth becomes a concern.

09:42 *** Joins: ArchPegasusMichael (Poni@Keep.In.A.Friendly.And.Pony.Place)

09:42 <Cepheid> Unlike with ISPs, there are no unlimited data plans.

09:43 <Cepheid> So you have a certain amount of bandwidth per month, and if you need more, you gotta pay for it.

09:44 <Cepheid> And then there's the final tier.  You set up your own server rack at a data center and take care of it yourself.

09:44 <Cepheid> If you've ever seen the cost of server hardware, you know why this is nuts.

09:45 <Cepheid> The cases are cheap.  Anywhere from $200 to $600 or more, depending on what you want.

09:45 <Cepheid> The hardware itself?

09:46 <Cepheid> If you're lucky, $2000.  If you're unlucky, upwards of $30,000.

09:46 <Cepheid> https://www.newegg.ca/dell-poweredge-r740/p/2NS-0008-54M76 In case you think I was joking.

09:48 <Cepheid> Fortunately for everyone involved with me, I have my own machine for hosting stuff, and all I use it for is gaming stuff.  So it's cost in various resources is minimal.

09:48 <Cepheid> Speaking of that, I need to update it.

09:57 <Cepheid> In other unrelated news, I got my new-and-improved tile renderer implemented under MonoGame.  Needs a bit of refinement, but it works as planned.

09:58 <Cepheid> ... Sort of, anyways.  Some issues with filtering/texture coordinate calculation.  Let's see if I can fix that.

10:03 <Cepheid> ... No, that's not the math, that's filtering.  Dangit, why won't it use nearest filtering?

10:10 * ConfusionRift wants to do something with music, but every time he moves to an editor, he scatterbrains and loses what he had in mind.

10:15 * Cepheid sighs.

10:15 <Cepheid> I can't seem to resolve this problem.

10:16 <Cepheid> Because it's using what appears to be linear or anisotropic filtering, regardless of the sampler state I set, it's pulling in texels from adjacent tiles, creating unsightly gaps.

10:17 <Cepheid> How much of an impact do I get if I just reconstruct the entire layer as a non-instanced polygon..?

10:35 <Cepheid> There a reason why a base provided shader has no problems with point sampling, while mine does?

10:37 <Cepheid> Whatever.  It's moot, anyways, as there's an oddity.

10:39 <Cepheid> Namely, simply reconstructing all the polygons seems to fare better than doing most of the work in a shader.

10:42 <Sunrise_Flare> hi dappled

10:42 * Dappled huzzahs!

10:42 <Dappled> How are you?

10:44 <Cepheid> So a man who was hosting a "never-ending stream" has ended said stream.  Cue lawsuits of false advertising.

10:45 * Dappled has seen many streams that never end. Usually full of water and fish.

10:46 <ConfusionRift> If it's one of the few I'm thinking of, the poor guy has collapsed on stream several times. Closing the whole thing was bound to happen.

10:47 * Finwe noms on Sunrise_Flare.

10:48 <Sunrise_Flare> I'm ok

10:48 <ConfusionRift> Unfortunately, they did shoot themselves in the leg by accepting bits and such that was supposed to extend the stream runtime. So, people did pay to keep the thing running. Yeah, there will be an outcry and possibly legal stuff on the way.

10:54 <Cepheid> Honestly he could argue that the stream was shut down by safety concerns and such and get away with it.

10:54 <Cepheid> Which, let's be honest, it is a safety concern.

10:54 <Cepheid> You can't stay wake 24/7 without sleeping forever.

10:55 * Cepheid hums, needs to implement map format now. Will use Razor's suggestion of simple json.

10:55 * ConfusionRift shrugs. "I wouldn't have done it in the first place. It's asking for problems."

10:56 <Cepheid> Heh.

10:57 * Cepheid opts for storing tiles in an array of arrays in json for logical design.

10:59 * Dappled hugs the Sunrise_Flare more. You need more white mages. White mages are the best.

10:59 * Cepheid decides to code the system to support rooms of varying sizes, even though it's not necessary for this project. Re-usability in the future.

11:04 <Sunrise_Flare> I need to not stand in all the obcious AoE's and dodge boxx mechanics lol

11:05 <Dappled> But if you have more white mages then you don't need to move out of AoE's.

11:06 <Cepheid> One of your TTRPG characters that is.

11:06 <Dappled> System?

11:08 <Cepheid> Not a TT RPG or Pen and Paper or anything like that, or even an RPG.  I mean just the general theme of the character and it's history if it would suit the world I'm making.

11:08 <Sunrise_Flare> unfortunately you only have a fixed amount of healers to a party in 14

11:09 *** Quits: ConfusionRift (ConfusionRi@Pony-bkl.g9o.6.154.IP) (Quit: Recharging the batteries. Laters! *shutdown*)

11:09 <Dappled> Okay, so the basic premise for this current character is "The Rightful Heir died before they could take the throne and someone botched their ressurction." The nominal goal of this character is stop being undead so they can take their throne.

11:14 <Dappled> As for how I'm building it in pathfinder, Race is Dhamphir (Closest I can get to undead) And a horrible mishmash of multiclassing that is only tied together by theme. Classes are Medium (Reanimated) [Possessing their own body], Spiritualist (Soul Warden) [Has a Psychopomp Familiar who would really

12:36 <Schism> Onwards and upwards.  o3o

12:36 * Schism remembers the screams of frustration over slope movement.

12:37 <Cepheid> Yeah, that's going to be a nightmare to poke again.

12:37 <Cepheid> But I got an idea as to how it's implemented now.

12:37 <Cepheid> I can thank a few resources for it, including the game the engine is replicating, and Sonic the Hedgehog.

12:37 * Schism nodnods.

12:37 <Schism> Random: https://twitter.com/coraraejepsen/status/1380882091076902912

12:38 <Cepheid> The basic gist of it is a set of "feelers", which are just simple points, are checked to see if they intersect with a solid object.  Based on which feelers return a result, different conditions can be detected.

12:39 <Cepheid> Anyhoo, that's all I can do for now.

12:39 <Cepheid> My nose is burning and I feel a headache coming on.

12:41 <Cepheid> But yeah, if you use 3 feelers at the feet, one at the far left, one in the middle, and one at the far right of the player bounding box, you can use their states to determine different scenarios.

12:42 <Cepheid> If either of the side feelers are touching a tile, then the player is standing on the edge of a platform.

12:42 * Schism noddles once again.

12:42 <Cepheid> If the middle feeler is touching a tile, then the player is either on the edge, or standing firmly on a surface.

12:43 <Cepheid> If the middle feeler is touching a tile, but one of the side feelers is inside a tile, the player is on a slope.

12:43 <Cepheid> If none of the feelers are touching a tile, or are inside a tile, the player is in the air, and so on.

12:44 <Cepheid> This is usually combined with another 5 feelers for detecting things like pushing against a wall, or hitting the ceiling.

12:45 <Cepheid> The approach I was using in the past was... a rudimentary version of this.  The feelers were edges of a square, which didn't quite work.

12:49 <Schism> Seems a decent start, just not quite what you needed.

12:49 * Schism shakes her head. "I just read a ... remarkable thread."

12:50 <Schism> https://twitter.com/yesterdaysprint/status/1382501127111933954 - if you want a good couple of laughs, I highly suggest reading this assortment of one-liners about the Titanic from 1912.

12:55 <RazorSharpFang> "There's a lot of great tricks that [Xbox] taught us... if you're low on memory, you can reboot and the user can't tell... You can like, throw a screen up. "

12:55 <RazorSharpFang> Oh fantastic.

12:56 <Cepheid> Yeah, that was a technique that was used in one game, as I recall.

12:56 <Cepheid> They couldn't solve a problem, so they just rebooted the console.

12:56 <RazorSharpFang> You could just not leak memory. :3

12:58 <Cepheid> That would be preferable, yes.  But when you're strapped for time, and you need a fix NOW...

12:58 <Cepheid> Wouldn't surprise me if they did that with the older-style consoles.  The NES, SNES, Genesis and such.

12:59 <Cepheid> No reason you can't just set the boot vector to some arbitrary location, then do a soft reset.

13:00 <Cepheid> Especially as it was apparent that memory isn't cleared on resets on such consoles.

13:01 <Schism> Hmm.  An unusual and potentially harmful animal stuck up a tree in Krakow, Poland, has turned out to be somewhat less harmful than expected.

13:01 <Schism> Still dangerous, though.  https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-56757956

13:02 <Cepheid> Wut.

13:03 <Schism> Well, it represents an obvious choking hazard.

13:22 <Schism> I like how when I showed off the takeout order I bought yesterday, everyone who's never had Ethiopean food before was all "What the hell is that?" and everyone who has had it went "WANT".

13:22 <RazorSharpFang> One of my coworkers complimented how my food smelt. It's mostly the spices I added to it.

13:22 <RazorSharpFang> Chinese five-spice, a tablespoon.

13:23 <Schism> A fine spice for many a food.

13:23 <RazorSharpFang> I added it to my fried rice for flavour.

14:11 *** Joins: Angeline (Scootaloo@I.Will.Fly.Higher)

14:14 <RazorSharpFang> A few of my coworkers are really harping on pushing for web technologies even for desktop applications, but I've seen their performance. My broker uses Angular for its web-client framework and my computer struggles to keep up.

14:15 <RazorSharpFang> Whereas WPF performs a lot better for the same data being displayed.

14:44 <RazorSharpFang> My poor computer is sitting at 70% CPU usage or so

14:50 <ADragonDreaming> desktop applications also work offline.

14:52 <RazorSharpFang> Well, these days you can "install" web applications with a Manifest.

14:53 <RazorSharpFang> But this is for an enterprise intranet application anyway, so "offline" isn't a consideration.

14:53 <ADragonDreaming> I don't consider it a true "Desktop" application if it doesn't function while disconnected from the network.

14:54 <ADragonDreaming> It's a web app with a wrapper.

14:54 <RazorSharpFang> I mean, would you expect a command-and-control application to work without network?

14:55 <RazorSharpFang> A monitoring system without access to the thing it's monitoring?

14:55 <ADragonDreaming> the mental difference for me is as follows:

14:56 <ADragonDreaming> The command control interface still opens and "Works" - it just fails to communicate.

14:56 <ADragonDreaming> Consider: a browser is a desktop application.

14:56 <ADragonDreaming> It functions even offline - you can access and display locally stored pages without issue.

14:57 <Schism> Hum.  So, if the client and the server are or can be on the same machine, it's a desktop app.  (Or at least a standalone one.)  If the client and the server are by necessity independent of one another, it's not.

14:57 <RazorSharpFang> Yeah, so the "page" would act like a local page when the network is down.

14:57 <ADragonDreaming> Right.

14:57 <ADragonDreaming> If you can't access even the basic functions without network access, then that's not a desktop app. That's a web app with a wrapper.

14:57 <Schism> This of course expands exponentially if multiple servers are required to maintain said functionality.

14:59 <RazorSharpFang> What would you consider a basic function of a remote-controller?

14:59 <Schism> At which point I would declare that anything using a series of servers as a necessity for proper operation is a Web-Tangled Function.

15:00 <Schism> RSF: A peripheral.  It's linked to the device, and vice versa.

15:00 <Schism> I admit that there are some structural similarities between peripherals and client/server applications.

15:00 <RazorSharpFang> Well, for an intranet application, the network is like an extended bus.

15:02 *** Joins: LibrarianofHope (Librarianof@Pony-pq9.ma2.147.189.IP)

15:02 <Schism> We'd probably have to dig into the weeds about the difference between human-machine I/O and app/server I/O.

15:02 <RazorSharpFang> Especially because parts of the critical infrastructure communicate directly on the network, like GPS system (RTK-enabled), Radar, Lidar, etc.

15:02 <ADragonDreaming> can you log into the app and see the interface and get told that it's not connected and there's no data displayed?

15:03 <Schism> Heh.  Can you even log into the app?

15:03 <ADragonDreaming> or does logging in requiring a call out to a central server?

15:03 <ADragonDreaming> The former is a desktop app, the latter is not.

15:03 <RazorSharpFang> No, because the AD auth isn't available. It's also not available on the desktop app.

15:03 <ADragonDreaming> Then you have my answer.

15:04 <RazorSharpFang> Not to mention that you have to use Citrix to access the desktop where the app is launched then.

15:04 <RazorSharpFang> By your definition none of these are desktop applications!

15:04 <ADragonDreaming> Yes.

15:04 <ADragonDreaming> they are network apps.

15:06 <RazorSharpFang> I guess that's fair. A remote control application being a network app.

15:07 <Schism> Well.  Citrix is a networked application.  The applications on the server might be desktop apps in and of themselves.

15:07 <RazorSharpFang> Launching the app without network results in lot of text fields with `?` in them

15:07 <ADragonDreaming> As another example: Outlook.

15:08 <Schism> Heh.  Well... of course, there are distinctions and variants.

15:08 <Schism> Adra: IMAP, or POP3/SMTP?  o3o

15:08 <ADragonDreaming> Desktop app lets you access and view your already collected email. Archive things, delete things, draft e-mails, etc.

15:08 <ADragonDreaming> No network connection required.

15:08 <Schism> For POP3/SMTP, sure.  For IMAP... depends on the setup.

15:08 <ADragonDreaming> If you want to send receive, then yeah, network connection required. But the desktop app still has core functions available offline.

15:09 <RazorSharpFang> Yeah, I don't know if you can make an Angular application offline.

15:10 <ADragonDreaming> I'unno what Angular is.

15:11 <RazorSharpFang> It's like ReactJS

15:11 <ADragonDreaming> Not familiar.

15:11 <RazorSharpFang> It's... similar to Blazor?

15:11 <ADragonDreaming> I'm not a developer.

15:11 <RazorSharpFang> Yeah, I'm just going to give up.

15:12 <ADragonDreaming> I have some coding experience from high-school and some college, and I have some surface-level understanding of networking

15:12 <ADragonDreaming> Just say what it does, instead of comparing it to things

15:13 <RazorSharpFang> It's a Typescript framework for creating dynamic responsive webpages

15:13 <ADragonDreaming> (I frequently interpret statements made by product developers into language that a user can understand)

15:14 <ADragonDreaming> Ah, so one method to make a webpage shift appearance/present new options based on cursor location, for example? Or in response to scrolling?

15:14 <RazorSharpFang> In response to anything measurable, client-side or server-side. It's frequently used to display rapidly changing data for instance.

15:14 <RazorSharpFang> e.g.: A stock ticker

15:22 <ADragonDreaming> Might be possible if webpage and measurable change is contained entirely locally.

15:22 <ADragonDreaming> Dunno though.

15:22 <RazorSharpFang> I am finding that subscribing to a lot of tickers makes my browser dry-heave but this machine is 10 years old or so

15:23 <RazorSharpFang> Whereas I haven't noticed that sort of problem in an equivalent WPF application.

15:24 <ADragonDreaming> "You make good friend of me, for a lot of years..." - Muyskerm, March 2021.

15:26 <ADragonDreaming> Washington State has passed an act to remove restrictions on community broadbande

15:27 <RazorSharpFang> Though, we may end up implementing both of them, the desktop app for the power-users, the web-app for the casual users.

15:29 <RazorSharpFang> And if I'm on the desktop side, I can do some black magic with multiple threads...
