04:26 <Lazy> y'all just had to start talking about food when I'm hungry
04:26 <Thelema5> I really wanted to like kimchi. I was excited when a korean group came to the hotel I work at for a conference. They brought in 500 gallons of imported korean kimchi with them, and I was SO happy to be able to taste it...
04:26 <Thelema5> until I tasted it.
04:26 <Barry_From_Mars> My grandfather, born in the 1920s, still eats beets that sat in a bit of vinegar.
04:26 <Thelema5> Blech
04:27 <Barry_From_Mars> Tastes just like home to me.
04:27 <Barry_From_Mars> I have no doubt some people would eat (insert something you might find disgusting here) and think of it as homey.
04:27 <Thelema5> "The beet is the most intense of vegetables. The radish, admittedly, is more feverish, but the fire of the radish is a cold fire, the fire of discontent not of passion. Tomatoes are lusty enough, yet there runs through tomatoes an undercurrent of frivolity. Beets are deadly serious."
04:27 <Thelema5> -Tom Robbins
04:27 <Barry_From_Mars> I'm just sitting here like "Wat."
04:28 <Thelema5> The beet is the melancholy vegetable, the one most willing to suffer. You can't squeeze blood out of a turnip...
04:28 <Thelema5> The beet is the murderer returned to the scene of the crime. The beet is what happens when the cherry finishes with the carrot. The beet is the ancient ancestor of the autumn moon, bearded, buried, all but fossilized; the dark green sails of the grounded moon-boat stitched with veins of primordial plasma;
04:29 <Thelema5> The beet was Rasputin's favorite vegetable. You could see it in his eyes.”
04:29 <Barry_From_Mars> And I have numerous beets in the fridge now.
04:29 <Barry_From_Mars> Not sitting in vinegar.
04:29 <Barry_From_Mars> Dunno why but my mom loves pickled eggs. They're OK IMo.
04:30 <Thelema5> It really depends on what we grow up eating, in many cases.

04:31 <Barry_From_Mars> I still feel like trying the durian fruit so I can feel as if I ate what people describe as garbage.
04:31 <Lenfant_Sauvage> o3o
04:31 <Barry_From_Mars> Some say it tastes like rotten food or car tires and others say it's like ice cream...
04:31 <Thelema5> I hear it smells worse than it tastes. My daughter described it as tasting like banannas blended with onion.
04:32 <Barry_From_Mars> Both which I've eaten, onions raw too I add.
04:32 <Lenfant_Sauvage> I know a guy who tried durian fruit. I WATCHED him do it. I used to admin his livestream IRC.

04:33 <Barry_From_Mars> Not before.
04:33 <Lenfant_Sauvage> Norwegian delicacy. It's fish that's literally rotting, though in a specific way.
04:33 <Lenfant_Sauvage> When he finally tried it (on camera), it had progressed to the point where the bottom of the can was bulging.

04:34 <Barry_From_Mars> So that isn't supposed to happen I guess?
04:34 <Thelema5> ugh

04:38 <Thelema5> I'm lucky that the nearest cattle farm is more than a mile from my home, because they ARE bad in the summer. All I have adjacent to my property is two horse farms and an alpaca farm... they don't smell terrible at all.

04:39 <Lenfant_Sauvage> a *BIT*, because this is still Texas, where the city never QUITE begins, but still
04:39 <Barry_From_Mars> So now I'm imagining an Alpaca wearing peppermint perfume or something and a hat.

04:43 <Lenfant_Sauvage> Really the most animal life you'll find around here, in terms of "farms" or "ranches", are horses. Where my friend used to live in grade school, off of Jupiter and Collins is a horse ranch, though it's pretty much just a ground for horseback riding, since there's a little field nearby with hurdles and such
04:43 <Thelema5> O.o
04:44 <Lenfant_Sauvage> Bit farther north, there's a family that raises about four to six horses on several acres. Just because they can. And it's on a suburban intersection.

10:39 <|-e|> you mean rednecks?
10:39 <ian> Look at Pennsylvania. Definitely not lower class.
10:39 <LunaticHell> What did I say?
10:39 <Finwe> Lord Penn's Woodlands.
10:39 <ian> OTOH, Appalachia was colonized in large part by the Scots, IIRC
10:40 <LunaticHell> I said the accent now USED TO BE a lower class one, back in the day in britannia.
10:40 <LunaticHell> I did not say it's considered "lower class" today, did I?
10:41 <ian> LunaticHell: and I'm saying the people who immigrated to Pennsylvania were not predominantly of lower class
10:41 <|-e|> um... you implied?
10:41 <ian> They were intellectuals
10:41 * Unixkitty headtilts at the chat
10:42 <LunaticHell> They did probably not have enough intellectuals to colonize a continent, did they?
10:43 <LunaticHell> Think of all the people who wanted to get away from the british crown.
10:43 <ian> My impression is that the Quakers were mostly middle class
10:43 <Finwe> William Penn's father was an Admiral of the Royal Navy.
10:44 <LunaticHell> Ok, but I never heard of a destinct middle class accent during that time, maybe because I sucked at history classes.
10:44 <Finwe> Or Republican Navy or whatever, under Cromwell's rule.
10:44 <ian> Yeah, Will Penn himself was one of the richest men in the world
10:44 <LunaticHell> Alright, what is your point here?
10:44 <ian> I won't press the point because I do not know the history well
10:44 <Finwe> !link https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DJ1yPz14LrU
10:44 <DerpyBot> I need to ask Twilight about that one.
10:44 <DerpyBot> Twilight told me this video is about Oliver cromwell by monty python
10:45 <Finwe> ian: Father Penn was also called William Penn, by the way.
10:45 <Finwe> So William Penn Jr.
10:45 <Finwe> o3o
10:45 <LunaticHell> All I'm sayin' is that the lower class accent spoken in britannia at that time got to the united states and established itself there.
10:46 <LunaticHell> And that the "higher class" accent developed into what we would call "oxford english" [I think]
10:47 <ian> Maybe. I watched earlier today a video saying the accents were only slightly different at the time when America achieved independence.
10:47 <LunaticHell> Well, languaged tends to develop.
10:48 <Finwe> Indeed.
10:48 <ian> The "received pronunciation" accent is, I hear, a product of the 19th century.
10:48 <ian> Yes, aren't they lovely like that? :-)
10:48 <Finwe> Eastern 'Murrican is quite easy to understand, but some Southern U.S. accents are almost unintelligible.
10:49 <LunaticHell> It's marvellous.
10:49 <LunaticHell> I especially like the cockney accent, yum yum.
10:50 <Finwe> The same applies to North-Eastern accents in England.
10:50 <|-e|> ↑ that pinged me
10:50 <ian> In America, a lot of non-southerners find the southern accent to be quite enchanting. Others, unfortunately, associate it with uneducated "white trash," so it's stigmatized in the media. Stephen Colbert took dialect training classes to adopt a "General American" accent for this reason.
10:50 <LunaticHell> |-e|: what exactly?
10:50 <Finwe> Sometimes, if you are lucky, you might grasp an idea of what the good folk of Newcastle-upon-Tyne are saying to you.
10:51 <ian> I'd like to hear him speak in his native South Carolinan.
10:51 <|-e|> that line pinged me, LunaticHell
10:51 <LunaticHell> I cannot see what pinged you.
10:51 <|-e|> I can not too, but I have a thought
10:51 <Finwe> North-Eastern, I believe.

10:52 <Finwe> fyrepony: You completed it that fast?
10:52 <LunaticHell> Dashe: took me long enough to get that. xD
10:52 <Finwe> Or 30 minutes of download?
10:52 <fyrepony> download speed
10:53 <fyrepony> that being said i don't think major game companies even bother trying anymore
10:53 <ian> I'd also like to note that as for foreign accents, English as spoken by someone whose first language is a germanic tongue sounds much nicer to me than a romance language speaker or any asian language.
10:53 <Finwe> With modern 1/1 Gbit/s network interfaces, it should be faster.
10:54 <Finwe> ian: Might be because English is Germanic.
10:54 <Finwe> o3o
10:54 <|-e|> [ə`ge(ı)n] <— is it "again" or "a gain"?
10:54 <ian> Maybe, but if origins is the reason, shouldn't all the romance-derived words sound better out of the mouth of a Frenchman?
10:55 <ian> -e, I don't know IPA well enough to say
10:55 <fyrepony> EA is currently developing failure of re-skin of battlefield 4 &ubisoft....meh kinda hit and miss even sega has failed to produce good totalwar game since shogun 2+add ons
10:55 <|-e|> why? IPA is fun
10:55 <ian> But for me "again" rhymes with "den"
10:55 <fyrepony> but after batman mess, nothin can be worse
10:56 <Finwe> ian: But Frankish was a Germanic language.
10:56 <Finwe> In modern French, you can still notice Germanic words and structures.
10:56 <Finwe> Even though the Franks mostly adopted to the vulgar Latin spoken in the Gaul of old.
10:58 <ian> |-e|: Because of phonemes. I hear /p/ as /b/ and /pʰ/ as /pʰ/, for example, and /ʂ/ and [ɕ] as /ʃ/
10:59 <ian> er, /p/ → [b], /pʰ/ → [pʰ], /ʂ/ → [ʃ], /ɕ/ → [ʃ]
10:59 <ian> I can't help it, it was hardwired into my head as a baby, and it's incredibly hard to change my perceptions now.
11:00 <ian> This makes it hard to pronounce a second language properly.

11:14 <ian> I don't even think she uses it.
11:15 <ian> It's how I described myself in high school, and still describe anyone who is a fan of anime or other Japanese stuff.
11:15 <ian> When I was in high school the term 'weaboo' didn't exist either, it's definitely pejorative in most contexts.

11:17 <Nilak> Yeah, they both are. I had no idea up until recently that 'otaku' was negative until I was informed by one of my friends. I don't use the word, never have, but didn't know it was considered so negatively.
11:22 <ian> I just went through some of my old dream logs over several years and they often involve familiar places (a house, a city) but my dreaming brain does not seem very concerned with accuracy, because I almost always noted that it didn't look right, but I only realized this after waking up.

23:30 <Schism> Or, alternately, he gets thrown OUT of the manhold, with a plethora of voices, shouting, "We don't want him, take him back!"
23:30 <CleverDerpy> that's why the 3 stooges newer movie was funny to me
23:31 <CleverDerpy> for example
23:31 <Raid> LunaticHell: if you think that's all Chaplin - i have bad news for you. because main theme of film is actually AGAIN, after more than 70 years.
23:31 <LunaticHell> The humor partly comes from the fact that the one getting the short end of the stick never suffers realistic damage.
23:31 <CleverDerpy> one of my favorites is when they do every possible thing to avoid the common trick, oly to go through a series of slapstick and finish with it
