07:12 <Ali> Awww no magic?  No fun!

07:13 <Schism> Would you want to be flinging around thaumic energies in a place full of unidentified, occasionally unidentifiable artifacts powered by that same volatile blend of emotion and will?

07:13 <LogicMatrix> But that's what makes life fun

07:14 <Schism> Sure, if you're playing Dwarf Fortress.

07:14 <Ali> And remember kids, loosing is fun in Dwarf Fortress

07:15 <LogicMatrix> What if, and hear me out, we do what you just said not to do? Maybe those rules are there to limit us?

07:16 <Schism> Smart question, smart guy.  Yes, those rules are there to limit you.  Because if you just so happen to awaken a body-stealing amulet, we want to make it easier to take you down before you're totally subsumed.

07:17 <LogicMatrix> If there is anything that movies and popular culture has taught me, rules are there to be broken. On that note gonna touch everything.

07:18 <Schism> Hope you have fun sitting in a room on your lonesome for a few centuries, then.

07:20 <LogicMatrix> Hey someone has to do it, and figure out how everything works. Otherwise how will we know what everything does. I'll keep a journal for future visitors.

07:20 <Schism> Hah.  And now I'm imagining Equestria's variant of the Foundation.  I was thinking more like Warehouse 13, to be honest.

07:23 <LogicMatrix> Both those seem interesting. All joking aside, I would not mind fiddling with magical doodads to further progress. Researching that stuff seems fun

07:24 <Schism> I think in my variant, you'll be absolutely right.  Learning about the Black Vault shows that someone has the intelligence and drive to be part of it.  Though... one example of the artifacts in the Black Vault was a Rubik's Cube.  When it hit a certain configuration, it somehow repositioned an entire town... inside itself.

07:26 <Schism> The Guard found themselves at that town's prior location, and found only this multicoloured cube with an odd glowing aura inside a crater 5 miles wide.

07:26 <LogicMatrix> That seems troubling, that is why I wouldn't follow the eqg Twilight's school of magical testing and only test in as safe an environment as possible.

07:26 <Schism> LogicMatrix: When the Guard found that cube, they did the most intelligent thing imaginable.

07:27 <LogicMatrix> Not touch it

07:27 <Schism> Nope.  Hoping that they formed a magical seal, they peeled off all the stickers.

07:28 <LogicMatrix> That seems so intelligent, they all deserve medals. After all, why be a hater when you can be a congratulator. On another note they need to help figure out how the thing works now.

07:29 <Schism> Yeah, except that if one of the configurations means that everything in a 5-mile radius goes Somewhere Else, the safer bet is to just put it where nobody's going to be tempted.

07:30 <Schism> Also, in that respect, I won't deny, they weren't wrong.  The stickers /were/ a vital part of that runic array, kinda like those stickers with RFID tags you find on sensitive merchandise.  They told the thing what to do, and it is never, ever going to be put back together.

07:31 <Schism> Especially when Private Knock took one of the stickers, blew on it a bit, and lost it to the encroaching sands.

07:32 <Schism> Sorry, 2.5 mile radius, 5 mile diameter.

07:33 <LogicMatrix> Someones going to find it and make this thing work again. Still think the thing to do is wait and contain. We could've learned so much from that thing. Like pocket dimensions, or on a positive note how to get the town back.

07:35 <Schism> Sooner or later, that will happen, granted.  But until then, the damned thing's a thaumic nuke capable of twisting reality in a variety of ways, and Celestia doesn't want it to get into the hooves of someone who'll use it as a fidget device.

07:37 <Schism> There are other devices in the Black Vault which probably shouldn't be touched.  The Alicorn Amulet was lost in transit, somehow, after it convinced a tribe of zebras to murder one another for alchemical materials.  But there are other phylacteries.

07:37 <LogicMatrix> Pssh, everything is a fidget device for a scientist. See I graduated with a degree in the mad sciences. That makes me uniquely qualified to do stupid things somewhat safely.

07:38 <Schism> Safely for you, perhaps.

07:39 <LogicMatrix> Hey I volunteered to do the tests myself. Doesn't mean that I won't take on people who want to help me.

07:40 <Schism> Actually, I'm going to retroactively state that one of the chief rules in the Black Vault is that nobody who has SRMD gets access to more than zero of the items therein.

07:41 <Schism> In the MLP world, this means anyone who has or might be at risk for Cutie Mark Insanity Disorder.

07:41 <LogicMatrix> You underestimate my want to further progress for the sake of progress my friend.

07:42 <Schism> One telling facet of SRMD is that it's comparatively easy to disarm.

07:43 <Schism> Particularly in a universe ruled in part by stories.  By forcing the story along, the brain can exit its loop in a comparatively harmless fashion.

07:45 <Schism> Hee.  Okay, I'm going to take a hard left at this point because I wonder: LogicMatrix, have you ever read Narbonic and Skin Horse?

07:46 <LogicMatrix> Nope, I'm just saying what comes to mind.

07:46 <LogicMatrix> Should I read them? If so where do I find them?

07:47 <Schism> Okay, then.  I offer to you first the seminal mad science love story, Narbonic.  http://narbonic.com/

07:49 <Schism> Then, a similar comic, written by a previous fanwriter, which deals with those people who are actually liaisons to mad science and the weirdness that comes to them.  http://skin-horse.com/

07:49 <Schism> And finally, that fanwriter's entry into the MLP universe, where everypony becomes a mad scientist for a day.  https://www.fimfiction.net/story/14777/contraptionology

07:51 <Schism> This also includes Pinkie Pie as a mad scientist which, of course, she is.

07:54 <LogicMatrix> Just started on skin horse, already like it. Thanks for providing me with entertainment for awhile. It helps me stay awake till the sunrises and it's safe to sleep.

08:34 <ConfusionRift> I got to that boss a year after I had originally beaten the game (bad ending).

08:34 <Schism> Ooh, yes yes yes.  Zero-two was awesome, and damnit, now I should play Kirby 64 again.

08:35 <Schism> It was a bit of a pain to get all those shards, especially the ones which required a very specific power combination.

08:36 <CleverDerpy> the hardest one for me was, I will never forget it, the rock cutter jump

08:36 <CleverDerpy> where the shard was so high

08:36 <CleverDerpy> you had to use wall jumps pretty darn well to finish it

08:37 <Schism> I don't recall that, but... that definitely sounds familiar.

08:39 <ConfusionRift> Mine was the small rock in the volcano. I had the combo right, but for some reason, it just didn't open. So I gave up. A year later, I got back to it. I used THE SAME COMBO, and it opened. Guh.

08:39 <Schism> Er, 3.

08:41 <ConfusionRift> I liked Triple Deluxe, and I still have to get Robobot.

08:41 <Schism> While Nintendo as a whole is hit and miss, HAL tends to produce very good games no matter what.

08:44 <CleverDerpy> but you gotta agree mainline games are still very powerful

08:44 <ConfusionRift> Also, very easy game for me.

08:44 <Schism> I won't deny that.  The music really does make for the best parts of a Kirby game.  I mean, have you heard C.R.O.W.N.E.D.?

08:44 <ConfusionRift> I agree on that.

08:44 <ConfusionRift> yeeeesss!

08:55 <DerpyBot> I need to ask Twilight about that one.

08:55 <DerpyBot> Twilight told me this video is about Kirby Super Star Orchestra - Revenge of Metaknight

08:55 <ConfusionRift> Start the sub-game. You start storming inside a battleship.

08:55 <CleverDerpy> you are in for a real treat

08:55 * Midnight_Lilly chirps happily and nompfs on CleverDerpy

08:56 <CleverDerpy> my favorite theme from the game is called halfmoon

08:56 <Schism> Mmm... while CR's pun struck me the wrong way earlier, I have to agree that this sounds too weak in the opening segments.

08:56 <CleverDerpy> it's from the second half of the halberd ship stages

08:57 <CleverDerpy> they even use it as a score in the robobot song "mind in a program"

08:57 <Schism> I know, it just doesn't have that bombastic quality which you need upon such an invasion.

08:57 <CleverDerpy> it gets better

08:57 <CleverDerpy> but it transitions too, for different elements of the themes that follow that story

08:57 <ConfusionRift> Oh yeah, you revisit the ship by flying towards it on a huge bird (Dynablade), which gets flakked as you venture inside again.

08:57 <Midnight_Lilly> Schism my invasion music is the koopa ghost dungeon theme

08:58 <Schism> That's the problem, though.  The opening of such an orchestration needs to be very strong, illustrating the hero rising above all odds to place themselves onto the battlefield once more.

08:58 <Midnight_Lilly> The one from baby mario

08:58 <Schism> Tirek, can we get a huzzah here?

08:58 <CleverDerpy> like orange ocean, then halfmoon, then rainbow resort, then meta kinhgt's battle theme, then "Escape from the halberd" then the famous credits

08:59 <Midnight_Lilly> Or a menicing under current, for the underpowered vilans ..

08:59 <Schism> CleverDerpy, I know, and as a collection it works well enough, but you do need to open strong.  A prelude to the main theme which comprises elements of all the parts.

08:59 <CleverDerpy> https://youtu.be/L170GdJU8Ak?t=6m41s start here

08:59 <ConfusionRift> I should mention, most of the orchestra pieces hit me right in the nostalgia and feels.

09:03 <ConfusionRift> The credits in Return to Dreamland... now that's a credits song. The tend to pull off the credit song, especially that feel of recollection.

09:12 <Schism> Never tried that, but it does make sense, considering that it's a tracker.

09:14 <ConfusionRift> It was a thing I loved doing in the game, just because.

11:38 <Cepheid-mobile> Truth told the hardest part of making a game for me isn't the code or the engine.  It's the art.

11:40 <Midnight_Lilly> Well the hardest part if art for me is I can draw it in my head. Not so much on paper

11:41 <Cepheid-mobile> I am some sort of weird coding prodigy.  Ask me to write code, given some goal or design and I'll do it with ease.  Ask me to do anything else and it will be difficult for me, and be mediocre at best.

11:41 <Midnight_Lilly> I can't remember the title only the plot!

11:42 <Midnight_Lilly> The story was sthere where two races of Uber magic uses. They had a war and one side one. Now the winners they kinda got tricked into using the magic to tear the world apart

11:44 <Midnight_Lilly> They tore it up and rebuilt it as a set of several world's instead. 1 the world of water. 2the world of fire 3 the world of air and the 4th world the world of the labrinth. (Where they imprisoned the losers of there war)

11:44 <Cepheid-mobile> Not familiar with the story.  Doesn't ring any bells.

12:39 <Jahnesta> i dunno like on those old cars?

12:40 <PKid> i can't remember, but its design alwyas seemed very modern and "out of place"

12:40 <PKid> the tech level of equestria is kinda hard to pinpoint

12:40 <Cepheid-mobile> True, Schism.  Can also just use rope lines leading down.  Artefacts from previous explorers.  All of whom went missing.

12:40 <PKid> i recall something a long long LONG time ago that the tech level was somewhere along the lines of victorian england, but i can't remember if this was an actual comment by lauren, a staff, or just fan conjecture

12:41 <Jahnesta> The Ponyville spa has waching machines!

12:41 <PKid> but that's obviously no longer the case

12:41 <Schism> Later on, you could create a quest or two to repair an elevator with parts from the area - and then, to create one in a shaft.

12:41 <Jahnesta> like ince that work without magic!

12:41 <Cepheid-mobile> I would say Pony is baseline Victorian-era and steam punk.

12:41 <PKid> manehatten is dubious

12:41 <PKid> it looks like it could be early 1900s NYC level but then you see things like the ultra-rave above rarity's new shop

12:44 <PKid> it is

12:44 <Cepheid-mobile> Crystal Kingdom is probably more a geometric style.

12:44 <PKid> ponyville is more central in equestria, manehatten is on a coast

12:45 <PKid> i don't dislike the more "modern" cities like manehatten and las pegasus

12:45 <Jahnesta> it even has the lyberty statue!

12:45 <PKid> it's just a little teeny bit jarring to go from ponyville and canterlot only from season 1 and 2 all the way to stuff that's early 20th century

14:44 <Cepheid> Thanks.

14:45 *** Joins: Loshadovich (averagejoey@Pony-2pcvo0.router.siliconvalleywifi.com)

14:46 <Cepheid> So, basically yeah.  My roguelike.  As you may recall, it was intended to have a world wherein some deity and a demon god fought, and the demon god was struck down with a massive spear.  So massive it sent the demon god into the depths of the world, and left a cleft in the surface world, with a bit of the haft sticking out.

14:47 <Cepheid> Fast forward a few hundred to a thousand or so years.  A city has sprung up around it, because the haft of the spear is partly hollow.  Tunnels run throughout it, down into the depths.  The city is a starting point for explorers entering the haft and descending.

14:47 <Cepheid> There are a few changes I want to make, but the basic premise is the same.  Descend into the depths, find demon god below, weakened but alive, murder it.

14:47 <Cepheid> Or rather, the core of the demon god.

14:49 <Cepheid> The world is what's changing, mostly.  I have this idea of a small planetoid that's multi-layered.  A solid core, surrounded by a large, cavernous layer, followed by solid rock and ground, then the surface.

14:51 <Cepheid> The problem is, is that I plan to use somewhat realistic scaling for certain things.  Each floor of the shaft is going to be about 10+ feet minimum.  And I haven't got a scale for the planetoid size.  I don't want it to be excessively deep, but I'd still like the cavernous region.

14:51 <Cepheid> Of course, if I just scrap the planetoid idea, and suggest there's a massive cavern that the demon god is trapped within, that works better.

14:53 <Cepheid> Since I can then make the "dungeon" say, ~100 or so floors, so-  ...  Hmm, I just thought of an interesting idea to separate the floors.

14:53 <Divide> Embedded facilities where you need to teleport between them?

14:53 <Divide> And you need to somehow break the encryption on the spells in order to access them, generally by clearing floors and collecting items from monsters?

14:54 <Cepheid> Nah.  Treat the haft like an open tower, of sorts. Each floor's exit leads to a stairwell that spirals around the haft, going down several stories before a new floor is entered.

14:55 <Cepheid> That way, I can have say, 50 floors, but each spiral staircase traverses roughly 10 or so stories.

14:55 <Divide> That certainly works.  And as an added benefit, Sombra can watch happily as a Slinky travels down the steps.

14:56 <Cepheid> Heh.

14:56 <Cepheid> Now I got this terrible idea of joke monsters.  "Sombra's Slinky"

14:56 <Cepheid> Description:  "It's a slinky, going down the stairs.  You don't know how it gets through each floor to keep going down and down."

14:57 *** Quits: Loshadovich (averagejoey@Pony-2pcvo0.router.siliconvalleywifi.com) (Ping timeout: 121 seconds)

14:58 <Cepheid> And to make it more confusing, every time you arrive at a stairwell, you see it.  It's the same one as from the stairwell you were on before.

14:58 <Cepheid> And you see it when going in both directions.

15:04 <Divide> Cepheid: Junk cactpots again today.  Bleh.  Though I must say, Elena's deck is pretty interesting.

15:04 <Cepheid> In any case, what do you think of the basic idea, Divide/Schism?  It's not much more complex than roguelikes, admittedly.  Personally I'd have liked to have some sort of offshoot branches in the underground and depths, where you can find something(Haven't decided WHAT yet) that weakens the demon god.

15:05 <Divide> Holy symbols?  Offshoot branches dedicated to a certain religion within the game where you can find piece of equipment geared towards a certain faith.

15:05 <Divide> a piece*

15:05 <Cepheid> Or artefacts related to the original deity that struck down the demon god.

15:06 <Cepheid> As for how it'd be handled at the depths, what with the demon god being down there, I'm thinking "demon god is in a massive crater, but just before entry into it, there are paths leading out from the tower to the surroundings."

15:07 * Divide nods, "If your original plan has the deity dead so the seal's weakening, you could also have those artifacts as fragments of the original deity."

15:07 <Divide> Hmmm.  Could call them 'veins'.

15:07 <Cepheid> Of course, this is all early design stuff.  I should be more concerned with the main details and getting the basics implemented first, really.

15:08 <Cepheid> I was thinking it was more "The deity in question and demon god were fighting throughout the universe, and it just so happens that the deity got the upper hand here, at this planet.  After striking the demon god down, and thinking the demon god dead, the deity left for parts unknown."

15:09 <Cepheid> Also, I'm using "deity" because I haven't decided if male or female, yet.  I'm thinking female, something reminiscent of a valkyrie in description and appearance.

15:11 <Cepheid> For now though, I'd rather focus on the structural details.  Does the stairwell idea work for you, Schism?  I took inspiration from Ys 1.

15:13 <Cepheid> Darm Tower separates it's floors by having Adol exit the current floor to a pathway along the exterior, and then go up or down a staircase spiraling around the tower.

15:13 *** Joins: Loshadovich (averagejoey@Pony-2pcvo0.router.siliconvalleywifi.com)

15:14 <Divide> Could definitely work... I'm guessing stairways with no railings.

15:15 <Cepheid> Mmhmm.  The implication was that the tunnels were dug out by monsters over the centuries that passed.  So there's no OSHA compliancy.

15:16 <Cepheid> When you go out to the exterior, you can jump off if you want.

15:16 <Cepheid> It'd also be an interesting location to introduce flying enemies.

21:50 <Cepheid> Interesting.

21:51 <Schism> Yeah, I'm used to EMTs going by and rushing through, but that was something else.

21:53 <Cepheid> Helicopters and planes don't bother me.  More because at least once every week, I ahve to spend at least 8 hours of my day listening to impossibly loud lawnmowers.

21:54 <Schism> I'm willing to accept medivacs taking time out of my very pointed sleep schedule.  That is NOT a problem.  A helicopter buzzing my apartment low enough that it sets my fillings to a local radio station while setting a course for Norway?  No.

21:59 <Schism> Yes.

21:59 <Librarian> in mexico they are akin to objects legally

22:01 <Schism> Don't flippin' tempt me.  I'd probably use it against Rainbow Dash.

22:01 <Cepheid> It's called "Call the police and report that a helicopter was in violation of airspace regulation."

22:02 <Cepheid> It won't solve the fact that it happened, but the person may very well be trackable.

22:02 <Schism> I fear I didn't get any pictures.  That is tempting, though.

22:03 <Schism> That having been said, the fact that it was on a tangental path across the biggest hospital in the city means that if it didn't have a damned good reason to be there, it's got a damned good reason to be impounded.

22:04 <Cepheid> I'm not sure if helicopters make use of the tech, but I'm pretty sure ADS-B is not RADAR-based.  It's possible that the airports might have information on who was in the area at the time specified.

22:04 <Cepheid> Mmm.  Yeah, ADS-B is satellite-based, like I recall.
