00:01 <Cepheid> According to the general "rules" accepted by the industry, I've already worked two work days.
00:04 <Cepheid> Apparently, the average number of lines of code a developer writes a day tends to be around 20 or so lines due to the amount of design and planning involved.

00:21 <Schism> Ah... this took a while, but getting my crystallizers into shape is well worth it.
00:26 * Ali flops over Cepheid
00:27 <Cepheid> Hoi.
00:27 <Ali> Ugh, some of the map spawns have been horrible
00:28 <Cepheid> Yeah, you can simply press Escape and go "Restart" until you find a reasonable spawn.
00:28 <Ali> I do, there's no way I'm starting a new game as a rookie with the major mats no where close together
00:29 <Cepheid> If you want something to help assist in that regard, go pick up the mod "Resource Spawner Overhaul." It adjusts resource spawning to make better use of trains, and also spreads out the biters a bit. On the other hand, it ensures that your starting point has all the basic ores needed.
00:30 <Ali> It hasn't been a bad rate of good to bad
00:30 <Ali> Did have a few problems with not having turrets up yet on one
00:30 <Cepheid> Yeah, it helps to handcraft some turrets early on. Expensive, but viable.
00:30 <Cepheid> But it sounds like you're slowly getting the hang of it.
00:31 <Ali> I'm getting the hang of it, but the layouts of the latter stuff not yet
00:31 <Cepheid> That comes with practice.
00:31 <Cepheid> Don't expect to create clean layouts like I did last night, at the start. Hell, even *THAT* isn't clean. No, expect spaghetti networks.
00:32 <Cepheid> Here, let me get an example of what a terrible layout looks like.
00:33 <Cepheid> https://eu3.factorio.com/assets/img/blog/fff-236-GridLock-final-4429.jpg
00:33 <Cepheid> I can't even follow this thing. And guess who made it?
00:33 * Schism takes a pause. Bwarghs.
00:33 <Schism> Cepheid: That does look like your work, I guess. XD;
00:34 <Schism> Or could be Adra's.
00:34 <Cepheid> No.
00:34 <Cepheid> It's one of the devs.
00:34 <Schism> Nah, I know, that's... yup. Madness.
00:35 <Ali> I don't even know what half of that stuff IS
00:36 <Cepheid> I don't even know what half of it is.
00:36 <Cepheid> It's impossible to follow.
00:36 <Ali> I see colors and stuff
00:36 <Ali> but I don't know anything
00:36 <Cepheid> Like, I can identify individual items, but I can't see how it's being utilized.
00:37 <Cepheid> Apparently, the dev just goes "spaghetti factory" crazy.
00:37 <Ali> Apperenty
00:37 * Ali can't spell!
00:38 <Cepheid> As for the actual dev, I have no idea. I'm willing to bet kovarex, though.
00:41 * Ali just hopes she'll be more helpful on the server cause she's still so unsure of self
00:44 <Ali> Cepheid, do you have problems with kitten claws getting stuck in just about everything?
00:46 <Cepheid> Yes.
00:47 <Cepheid> That means you need to clip their claws. Do you know how to do that?
00:47 <Ali> Nope! and I don't dare
00:49 <Cepheid> It's pretty straightforward though. Take a regular pair of nail clippers, hold the cat in between your lap, grab a paw, and then for each digit on the paw, press down on the tip until the claw pops out. Look at it carefully, figure out where the flesh in the claw starts(It's pretty apparent) and then just clip the tip of the claw. If you're worried about injuring it, just clip the very tip of the claw, don't go too far
00:49 <Cepheid> down. So long as the tip is blunted, it's fine.
00:49 <Cepheid> But if you're concerned, ask the vet to do it when you go to get them spayed. Or a parent who's done it before, or someone else you know who's done it.
00:49 * Ali nod nods and le hugs the Cepheid
00:50 <Cepheid> They'll squirm and fidget a lot, probably.
00:50 <Ali> I'd like some more Factorio training if that might be possible >.>
00:50 <Cepheid> Let me check something.
00:51 * Ali gets into the car and start driving around ramming into things, beware the mare drivers
00:52 <Cepheid> Unfortunately, I'll have to refuse tonight, Ali. I have work I want to get done, and I've only been working for two hours or so.
00:52 <Cepheid> And I'd like to try getting to sleep early tonight if at all possible.
00:52 <Cepheid> I didn't fall asleep until 6 AM this morning. =.=
00:52 <Ali> That's fine
00:53 <Cepheid> Sorry, it's just for the next few days, I am going to be *VERY* busy. I have a project due on the 11th that I have to finish, and it's only half-done. Not including the report.
00:53 <Cepheid> I actually shouldn't be playing games at all.

20:08 <Cepheid> The early patch yeah, will be pretty poor. Better ones tend to be further out. The game uses either an exponential or multiplicative growth algorithm as the distance between the start and further locations are generated. I forget which approach is used.
20:09 <Cepheid> As for generation: Frequency increases the frequency of the wave functions used. Increasing it results in smaller patches, but more patches. Decreasing it results in larger patches, but fewer patches.
20:09 <Cepheid> Size increases the height of the wave function. Larger size correlates to larger patches, and smaller size correlates to smaller patches.
20:09 <Cepheid> Richness is just a scaler for the ore patch itself. It scales the value up or down accordingly.
20:10 <Cepheid> This means if you want really rich, large fields of ore: Very Low Frequency, Very Large Size, Very High Richness.
20:11 <RazorSharpFang> I have been cursed with an ore patch that's mixed stone and copper.
20:13 <Cepheid> There's an easy way around it.
20:13 <Cepheid> To give some clarification, place a splitter, then left-click it.
20:14 <Cepheid> If you set an output priority to one of the two ores, the ore will go out that side. Anything else goes out the other side.
20:14 <RazorSharpFang> ... wow. I used a metric tonne of filter-inserters instead.
20:15 <Cepheid> Those work too, yes.
20:15 <Cepheid> Truth told, splitter filtering is "new"
20:15 <Cepheid> So it's probably not covered by the wiki among other things.
20:19 <Cepheid> Today's irritating challenge: Figure out why MINIX's clang won't link with the aio library I've written. It builds, it contains the associated functions, but it won't link.
20:21 <Cepheid> ... Oh. Because there's no symbols listed for some rea- WAIT WHAT?

20:31 <Ali> Cepheid, was there a reason you don't use the lights?
20:32 <Cepheid> They generally aren't powerful enough for lighting stuff up I find. They're better off used as indicators.
20:32 <Cepheid> Which requires understanding of the wire network.
20:32 <Ali> And the other colored wires?
20:34 *** Joins: Moongoodboy{K} (blackl@sugar-belle.blackl.net)
20:35 <Cepheid> Those are used for said wire network.
20:36 <Cepheid> Essentially, the "network" I'm referencing allows you to send signals to various objects. If you click on such an object, you'll see a small UI window, and in the upper right corner, there should be a couple of buttons. One of them details what network it's connected to, and if it's connected, how it operates based on signals.
20:37 * Ali is very confuzzled.
20:38 <Ali> Does an automation 2 work faster than a 1?
20:38 <Cepheid> Yeah, if you mouse over anything that does crafting, you'll see a "Crafting Speed"
20:38 <Cepheid> 1 is the base speed, the player has 1 crafting speed.
20:38 <Cepheid> Assembler 1 is 0.5, Assembler 2 is 0.75
20:39 <Cepheid> That means Assembler 1 takes twice as long to craft an item as a player. Assembler 2 takes 33% more time.
20:41 <Cepheid> Assembler 3 is actually *FASTER* than the player, at 1.25
20:43 <Ali> Heh. Too bad you're busy with your project. I need to learn more about streamlining. This place is a mess.
20:43 <Ali> That's more important than a silly game.
20:44 <RazorSharpFang> Cepheid, how do you destroy blueprint books? I have this blueprint book in my inventory that I can't get rid of. right-clicking it does nothing.
20:45 <Cepheid> The only way I've found to destroy stuff is to put it in a wooden box, and then shoot the box.
20:45 <Cepheid> When the box is destroyed, it's contents go with it.
20:45 <RazorSharpFang> I can't move the blueprint in the box.
20:45 <RazorSharpFang> It's not movable.
20:45 <Cepheid> ...?

20:48 <Cepheid> ... o.O
20:49 <RazorSharpFang> Middle-clicking it made it vanish into nothing. That wasn't on the tool-tip.
20:49 <Cepheid> Oh.
20:50 <Cepheid> According to the wiki you can also destroy blueprint books by using the red trash button on the blueprint UI.
20:51 <RazorSharpFang> I had clicked that prior - that's what made it a ghost.
20:51 <Cepheid> Ah.
20:51 <Cepheid> Let me check something right quick.
20:52 <Cepheid> Strange. Clicking the button didn't make it ghost-like to me.
20:53 <Cepheid> Oh, wait, there it goes.
20:53 <Cepheid> OH!
20:53 <Cepheid> Middle-clicking basically causes that slot to act as a filter.
20:54 <RazorSharpFang> Oh.
20:54 <Cepheid> If there's an item in the slot that's middle-clicked, whenever any new items are created, and you don't have a pre-existing stack, it forces the item to go to that slot.
20:54 <Cepheid> You likely middle-clicked the slot at some point by mistake. The blue background indicates the filter is set.
20:55 <RazorSharpFang> Might be nice to have a tooltip say "This is a filter. Middle-click to remove"
20:57 <Cepheid> It might be, yeah. I'd push it onto the suggestions forum.
20:58 * Cepheid gets back to coding.
20:59 <Cepheid> Got a blocker of a problem.
20:59 <Cepheid> I'm writing syscalls, fine and dandy.
20:59 <Cepheid> Except this particular syscall relies on mthreads/pthreads. And it *NEEDS* to use them within the calling process address space. I can't create a thread from outside the calling process.
21:00 <Cepheid> Problem is, when I try to use mthreads/pthreads in libc, it doesn't link properly against mthreads/pthreads. And likewise, if I make the AIO syscalls a separate library, for whatever reason the linker can't find the calls in the resulting library.

22:11 <RazorSharpFang> It's useful, as it lets you put two different kinds of items on the same belt.

22:12 <Cepheid> Ali, there's a simple way to fix that using one-sided stuff.
22:13 <Cepheid> Take a splitter. Place it along a belt path with one end sticking out AWAY from the belt side that has all the items.
22:13 <Cepheid> Then simply place a belt in front of the other side of the splitter, directed towards the belt line.

22:15 <Cepheid> But it has to collect them all first.
22:15 <RazorSharpFang> That's easy from a chest.
22:16 <Cepheid> There's actually an item that exists in the game that's not accessible that allows for what you want, I presume. Loading lots of items into a box rapidly.
22:16 <Cepheid> They're called, appropriately, loaders.

22:49 <Schism> RSF: And if I leave my goat with the lion, he'll get eaten.
22:50 <Cepheid> A simpler way to put it is any type of problem that has exponential growth or factorial growth.
22:50 <Cepheid> Factorial growth is really fun. Since it grows quickly. 1! = 1, 2! = 2, 3! = 6, 4! = 24, 5! = 120, and so on.
22:50 <Cepheid> Basically, once N hits a certain point, the amount of computing time is estimated to be beyond the lifespan of the universe.
22:51 * ThatAnonPony boops Cepheid with quantum computing.
22:51 <Cepheid> There are... solutions to the problems, but they involve a form of computer that is only- Yeah.
22:51 <Cepheid> Quantum computing can solve some NP-hard problems.
22:51 <Cepheid> That said, quantum computers aren't very good at some algorithms that conventional computers are good at.
22:51 <Cepheid> So quantum computers aren't a be-all-end-all solution to computing problems.
22:51 <ThatAnonPony> They're good at databases only, aren't they?
22:52 <Cepheid> I'm not sure. I haven't really explored what they are useful for. I only know how qubits work, and that they work great on some algorithms, and not so great on others.
22:53 <Cepheid> They're like conventional computers that we are familiar with, in that some algorithms work great on them, but others not so great.
22:53 <Cepheid> And the irony is that some of the algorithms that work great on conventional computers, many of which we use today, run like garbage on quantum computers.
22:53 <Cepheid> So, as stated, not a perfect solution.
22:54 <Cepheid> If anything, we'll likely need a hybrid machine for the absolute best setup.
22:54 <RazorSharpFang> Do the construction robots stack?
22:54 <Cepheid> In what sense? Inventory?
22:54 <Cepheid> They stack up to 50 units in an inventory.

23:07 <Cepheid> RazorSharpFang: Some people have been able to use bots exclusively, ignoring belts altogether. Requires a lot of work, though.
23:10 <RazorSharpFang> Is the bot-limit on a per-roboport basis?
23:11 <RazorSharpFang> "100 objects are missing for construction" - lol
23:13 <Cepheid> Yeah, if you overdo it, the game will tell you that you need more bots.
23:13 <Cepheid> As for a bot limit, no limit on built roboports.
23:13 <Cepheid> However, personal roboports have a limit.
23:13 <Cepheid> You could have a logistic robot network with over 3000+ robots.
23:15 <Cepheid> Really, the limiting factor if anything, is that after a while, your bots will queue up at a roboport to charge. During that wait, they won't do anything, and a single roboport can only charge 4 bots at a time.
23:16 <Cepheid> And your power generation, as well. Roboports constantly charging bots drain a LOT of electricity.
23:16 <RazorSharpFang> Up to 3.5 MW?
23:18 <RazorSharpFang> And how does deconstruction work?
23:22 <Cepheid> Depends on the situation. If logistics storage exists, and you deconstruct stuff outside of the range of your personal roboport, but in the range of a standard roboport, that stuff will go to the logistics storage.
23:23 <Cepheid> If you deconstruct stuff within your personal roboport, the game prioritizes your personal roboport bots, so those bots will deliver what they pick up straight to you. IF you deconstruct more than your bots can do in a single trip, the rest will be taken up by logistics network bots, if they can reach it.
23:23 <Cepheid> So some will go into your inventory, some to logistics storage.
23:23 <Cepheid> It's confusing.
23:24 <Cepheid> Schism, I made a mistake. See, when I went to do groceries with my parents for my weekend to myself, I didn't get anything sweet to eat.

23:26 <Cepheid> I'd prefer not to, to be honest.
23:27 <Schism> Oatmeal raisin cookies?
23:28 <RazorSharpFang> Is it faster to run on a transport belt that's going in the same direction as you, or on a surface like concrete?
23:28 <Cepheid> I haven't actually checked.
23:28 <Cepheid> But I would assume the belt is faster, especially an express belt. The concrete and refined concrete only work so well with vehicles.
23:29 <RazorSharpFang> Oh, so your car works better on concrete?
23:29 <Cepheid> Cars and tanks move faster on stone path, concrete and refined concrete.
23:29 <Cepheid> But there is a limit imposed that's lower than the runspeed increase for the player.
23:30 <Cepheid> Something like 120%. A belt moving in a given direction is probably better for tanks and cars.
23:30 <Cepheid> But then you'd have to make it wide, so the vehicle can stay on the belt.
23:30 <Cepheid> You can also use better fuel sources to increase their speed. Nuclear fuel(Made from Rocket Fuel + Uranium) offers the best speed increase and acceleration increase.
23:30 <Ali> Or drive like a crazy pony!
