02:36 <LibrarianofHope> ?
02:37 <LibrarianofHope> Dont do drugs kids
02:37 <Schism> Yes, if you drink too much dwarven syrup you'll get killed by a carp.
02:37 <Cepheid> There is a car out front, the neighbours use that newly-legalized drug. They are just having a grand old time chatting.
02:38 <Stormspark> yeah I've seen remarkably casusal drug deals before

03:39 <Thelema5> This scene from Shaun of the Dead has always made my skin crawl... walking barefoot in a room where someone has worn street shoes? GAH!
03:40 <Thelema5> I observe strict outside/inside footwear protocol in my home; shoes are removed at the door, and socks are worn inside
03:41 <Thelema5> I'll not have someone dragging their street faeces and vomit into my home
03:42 <Schism> Minecraft movie to be released on May 24, 2019.
03:42 * Schism aughs at Thelema5, and nodnods.
03:44 * Cepheid is debating what to do. Obviously, there's a distinct choice between gaming and working on stuffs. However, he insists on avoiding working because he doesn't want to burn out rapidly. That leaves gaming. The question then becomes "what game?" He is thinking either NieR Automata or Mary Skelter.
03:44 <Stormspark> I'm KIND of the same
03:44 <Stormspark> no shoes inside
03:44 <Cepheid> https://twitter.com/hanamomoact/status/1013989510365970433
03:44 <Stormspark> but I don't wear socks inside
03:45 <Cepheid> I generally avoid socks myself. They itch like mad after a while.
03:45 <Stormspark> I only put on socks if I'm going to be putting on shoes and going somewhere
03:45 <Stormspark> shoes without socks are a great way to have really nasty shoes
03:45 <Thelema5> Shoes without socks is a great way to breed bacteria
03:45 <Schism> Cepheid: Have you played the Awesome Adventures of Captain Spirit yet? I hear good things about it.
03:46 <Cepheid> I am not even aware of the game.
03:46 <Cepheid> Ah, that game.
03:46 <Stormspark> I'm not concerned about bacteria...but it does cause really sweaty feet, and really smelly shoes that you can't get the smell out of
03:46 <Cepheid> Doesn't really look like my kind of game.
03:46 <Stormspark> plus it's really just uncomfortable
03:46 <Thelema5> That smell is bacteria
03:46 <Schism> Tis a free game which I believe is in the same vein as Life is Strange. But alright.
03:46 <Stormspark> so I always wear socks with shoes
03:47 <Schism> Cepheid: Hmm, you ever beat VVVVVV?
03:47 <Cepheid> I have not. I'm trying to avoid PC games and such right now.
03:47 <Thelema5> I am only ever barefoot in bed.
03:47 <Cepheid> My laptop sucks for gaming, and I don't want to sit in my furnace room of a bedroom.
03:47 <Stormspark> I'm always barefoot inside
03:48 <Stormspark> that said, I don't like going outside barefoot because it gets my feet dirty
03:48 <Stormspark> I don't like having dirty feet
03:48 <Stormspark> that's the only reason really
03:48 <Thelema5> Me either
03:48 <Stormspark> I don't like having dirty anything really
03:48 <Schism> Ah, well, if your laptop is incapable of running VVVVVV, you probably have a problem there.
03:48 <Thelema5> I wash my hands at least a dozen times a day
03:49 <Stormspark> I only wash mine if I actually get them dirty
03:49 <Stormspark> which doesn't happen that often because 90% of my time the only thing they touch is a keyboard heh
03:50 <Stormspark> they have to look or feel grimy or dirty before I'll bother washing them
03:50 <Stormspark> I do shower pretty religious though, at least once a day
03:50 <Stormspark> I can't sleep without showering first
03:50 <Cepheid> Honestly, NieR seems to be my best bet right now. Keep hearing good things about it, but never get around to playing it.
03:50 <Stormspark> so I always hop in the shower shortly before bed
03:50 <Stormspark> which has the side effect of my bed not getting dirty that easily
03:50 <Stormspark> I've heard a few people say good things about it, I haven't been in much of a gaming mood lately though
03:51 * Schism nods. And decides to poke at Super Mario 64 a bit more.
03:51 <Cepheid> Fun story, but my doctor told me that, for a skin condition I had a few years back, that when showering, I only scrub certain areas on my body. The rest I ignore.
03:51 <Thelema5> Huh.
03:51 <Cepheid> I of course ignored this and just switched to cold water for a bit.
03:51 <Cepheid> Turns out the hot water I use was causing the problem. Switched to cold water for a week or two, then switched back and everything was peachy.
03:52 <Cepheid> But yeah, apparently you're not actually supposed to be scrubbing every single spot with whatever you use. I forget he areas specifically, but I believe it was arm pits, crotch area, and a couple of other spots.
03:52 <Cepheid> But feet weren't on that list, if I recall.
03:54 <Cepheid> The premise being something along the lines of "Soapy water runs over the rest of your body, which still actually binds to loose dirt and pulls it away anyways."
03:55 <Stormspark> haha
03:55 <Stormspark> one of the discord bots has a -human tag
03:55 <Thelema5> Cepheid, I scrub everything everyday, with an exfolliant... bottom of feet as well. No problems
03:55 <Stormspark> I just said "I wish I could get the -human tag to work IRL, I'd be spamming it". Reply "Yeah, I think we all do"
03:55 <Thelema5> I guess to each their own
03:55 <Stormspark> I don't bother with exfoiliants but I do wash everywhere

03:57 <Stormspark> this song is "let's see how many metal songs (particularly Ozzy/Sabbath) we can name-drop"

03:59 <Thelema5> Heck, I can't cross a bridge without hyperventilating
03:59 <Cepheid> All I know is that hot water is generally considered bad for bathing in. Causes dry skin.
03:59 <Thelema5> I could see that. Natural oils would tend to dissolve
04:00 <Stormspark> I don't really have any fears EXCEPT heights
04:01 <Stormspark> I have a crippling fear of heights
04:01 <Stormspark> which I would think is weird since what I want most is to be able to fly

04:05 <Stormspark> 1-2 flights don't bother me even if they are. There is a minimum height required to trigger it for me
04:05 <Stormspark> It's weird, because I feel like I should be able to fly, but I know I can't - I think the fear of heights is a defense mechanism resulting from that. In that context it makes sense

06:00 <Schism> Made somewhat more frustrating by the fact that there's a sign just outside the eponymous hazy maze, which tells you that hidden somewhere in the level is the green switch. So you'd think it's in the maze. Nope! It's found via Nessie.

08:30 <Cepheid> So what're ye up to this morning, ConfusionRift?
08:30 <ConfusionRift> Unsure whether I should jump to Iconoclast, or play some more Terra Tech.
08:32 <Cepheid> Hard to say. I need to finish Iconoclasts myself.
08:32 <Cepheid> Myself, I'm currently reading up on Unreal Engine 4.
08:33 <ConfusionRift> Actually... gonna do that. Have to reduce my now once again expanded queue list.
08:33 <ConfusionRift> Oh, planning on a project with it?
08:34 <Cepheid> I have a project that could use it, yes.
08:34 <Cepheid> I also considered Unity3D, but it seems like UE4 has a lot more going for it. Looks large and confusing at first, but start playing around with it, and using a textbook..
08:35 <ConfusionRift> Isn't Unity3D more compact than 4?
08:36 <ConfusionRift> I mean, a simpler engine in comparison.
08:36 <Cepheid> In comparison, yes.
08:36 <Cepheid> But it has it's limitations. Same with UE4.
08:38 *** Quits: cabbage (cabbage@Pony-pf8tkn.dynamic.fusionbroadband.com) (Connection closed)
08:38 <RazorSharpFang> Unity3D's runtime is built on Mono, so it has "support" for *nix systems.
08:39 <Cepheid> Honestly, the biggest problem I have with either engine is a simple one: Documentation.
08:39 <Cepheid> Both engines are horribly documented.
08:40 <RazorSharpFang> Ah yes, Documentation.
08:40 <RazorSharpFang> The bane of all programmers.
08:41 <Cepheid> In the case of UE4, some of it is outdated. And you can't make a local, offline copy of the documentation as far as I can tell.
08:41 <Cepheid> Which is problematic because the online documentation is spotty at best for loading stuff. It can take anywhere from a few seconds, to a few minutes.
08:42 <Cepheid> Unity3D, the documentation is just... all over the place and confusing.
08:45 <ConfusionRift> Why... I hate this so much. Every program I try to use for the PS3 and PS4 controllers are no longer working correctly or at all.
08:45 <RazorSharpFang> I'd try a restart, myself.
08:45 <RazorSharpFang> Alternatively, start Steam.
08:46 <ConfusionRift> Fun fact: Their support is not a full support. So some games WILL ignore your controller, even if they support it.
08:47 <RazorSharpFang> Don't they just use the XInput API?
08:47 <Cepheid> Yup.
08:47 <Cepheid> I think that's a setting you can set.
08:48 <ConfusionRift> In any case, it seems to be working now. (sighs) I think I know the issue, which is why I retired the PS3 one. Alas, here I am again. I'm a fool.
08:48 <Cepheid> Hmm?
08:49 <ConfusionRift> scptk and some others freak out if the controller needs to charge. You can't charge and use the controller at the same time. It tends to just not work or work for a bit and then stop.
08:49 <ConfusionRift> PS3 controller specific.
08:50 <Cepheid> Right.
08:54 <ConfusionRift> Oh yeah, another reason why I'm using scptk is because XInput is just not working correctly. Yes, it WILL recognize my PS3/PS4 controller. YES, it will read inputs. But for whatever reason it does both DS4/Playstation AND XInput at the same time. So you get double inputs. And some games, for some dumb reason, changed the face button configurations for the Playstation controller in comparison to Steam and Xbox inputs.
08:54 <ConfusionRift> So you get conflicting inputs.
08:56 <ConfusionRift> So with scptk, the system thinks it's an Xbox controller, and so does Steam.
08:57 <Cepheid> Fun fun.

09:10 <Finwe> Cepheid: Yup, 0.5 up and anything below down to the next integer downwards.
09:11 * Finwe seems to answer with several days' latency.
09:12 <Cepheid> How does that apply to negative numbers? -4.5 = -4? Or -5?
09:12 <RazorSharpFang> Truncation? -4.5 --> -4
09:12 <Cepheid> Only asking because it's one of those fun areas of contention.
09:12 <Cepheid> Yeah, that's what's known as Round to Zero.
09:12 <Cepheid> Not all fields use that approach though.
09:12 <Cepheid> Nor do all computers use it.
09:13 <Cepheid> There are all sorts of weird approaches, apparently.
09:13 <RazorSharpFang> I maintain that if it's how C approaches it, then it's industry standard.
09:13 <RazorSharpFang> Array indexes should start at 0.
09:14 <Finwe> Cepheid: Then it's away from zero for 0.5 and towards zero for lower absolute value.
09:15 <Finwe> -4.5 ~ -5
09:15 <Cepheid> Right.
09:16 <RazorSharpFang> That's not REAL truncation! D:
09:16 <Cepheid> Personally I use the away-from-zero approach. It is what is taught in mathematics. Unfortunately, it's not what's used in computing usually. In fact, because of the variable nature of rounding methods, there isn't a rounding method in C or C++ as far as I can recall. Unless recent revisions changed that.
09:16 <Cepheid> You just have ceiling and floor.
09:17 <RazorSharpFang> I just floor everything.
09:19 <Cepheid> I hope you use the floor method for that, rather than casting from floating point to integer.
09:20 <RazorSharpFang> Nah, I just cast.
09:20 <Cepheid> That isn't a portable approach.
09:20 <RazorSharpFang> Portability hasn't been a concern for any of my projects yet.
09:21 <Cepheid> Fair enough.
09:21 <RazorSharpFang> And does that even hold true for managed languages?
09:22 <Cepheid> I have no idea.
09:23 <Cepheid> Hum, looks like I need to refresh my memory on the standards.
09:23 <Cepheid> C++ by default truncates.
09:23 <Cepheid> It's not architecture dependent.
09:25 <Cepheid> Of course, I cannot confirm this either, given that the C++17 standard documentation is behind a paywall.
09:25 <RazorSharpFang> Last I checked I was still on C++11
09:26 <Cepheid> Yeah, we're up to C++17, with C++2x in progress.
09:41 <Cepheid> Yeah, C++ specifically states that float/double -> int truncates the fractional part.
09:43 <Cepheid> Hum, my memory of handling floating->integer conversions must have been from an error I learned ages ago. In any case, I generally try to avoid relying on that behaviour.
09:45 <Cepheid> Or I could just be an idiot. One or the other.
09:50 * Cepheid pokes cat. Poke poke poke.
09:53 <ConfusionRift> Dunno why was reminded of Cat Poke.
09:54 <Cepheid> So, you know how cats like to repeatedly mark spots by rubbing themselves up against objects and such?
09:54 <ConfusionRift> Yarp?
09:55 <Cepheid> There's this one corner in the kitchen. Spitfire likes to rub up against it all the time, and I mean *ALL* the time. Especially when I'm around.
09:55 <Cepheid> Mostly he rubs his cheeks and jowls up against that spot.
09:55 <Cepheid> So, I just took a closer look at the spot, because I noticed something unusual.
09:56 <Cepheid> There was a brown, waxy material covering the small spot of the corner he rubs his cheek up against. He's been running his cheeks up against it for so long, it built up a thick layer of the oils he marks with.
09:58 <Cepheid> Fortunately it just washed right off with soap, water and a cloth.
09:58 <Cepheid> But geeze, cat, maybe you should slow down on the marking of territory.
10:00 <ConfusionRift> Heh.
10:01 <Cepheid> Speaking of cats, I had a bit of a weird incident in a dream yesterday. I was in my house, go over to the dining room window, and I look off to my left.
10:01 <Cepheid> On the ground, there was a circle of about 6 or 7 cats, all striped-orange tabbies. They looked like they were having a meeting. A bunch of other cats were nearby, looking at the group, but kept their distance.
10:02 <Cepheid> Unfortunately I never got to see what happened from that point on.
10:02 <Cepheid> I was woken up by my dad putting on Edge of Tomorrow and turning up the volume.

22:50 <Cepheid> Schism, what're your thoughts on Bell's internet and TV services?
22:51 <Schism> Thus far, I'm finding this service to be pretty acceptable. Speed is nice, even at 100Mbps.
22:52 <Schism> By which I mean it's actually 100Mbps.
22:52 <RazorSharpFang> Okay, but do you suffer from packet loss and jitter?
22:52 <Schism> Virtually nonexistent for me.
22:52 <Cepheid> Rogers as of late has been trying to scam us into a new contract where we pay more.
22:52 <Cepheid> So my parents are considering switching.
22:53 <Schism> But of course. Hmm.
22:53 <Schism> Your folks watch sports much?
22:54 <Cepheid> My dad watches NASCAR and the occasional bits of golf, that's it.
22:55 <Schism> Hrmm. Wanna say the best bet would be the Better bundle with 100Mbps, and I think that's $132/month for the contract term. You use the home phone at all?
22:55 <RazorSharpFang> So expensive!
22:56 <Schism> RSF: Yes, but at least it doesn't fluctuate with the waves in Malcolm Turnbull's gut.
22:56 <Cepheid> No we don't.
22:57 <Cepheid> RazorSharpFang: Normal pricing in Canada.
22:57 <RazorSharpFang> Nyeh!
22:57 <Cepheid> There's a group of telecoms that all work together to monopolize the market.

22:57 <RazorSharpFang> Malcom's the Liberal party's leader... I think they're prime minister.
22:57 <Schism> Yes, Turnbull's the PM.
22:58 <Schism> Anyway, yeah. Better bundle + 100Mbps... hrmf. They don't particularly like 3rd party routers; you have one going with a bridged modem ATM?
22:58 <Cepheid> Basically, they control all the backbones for Internet and TV services, and as a result, they all agree to set prices at certain numbers, etc.
22:58 <Cepheid> I do, yes.
22:58 <RazorSharpFang> I'm honestly not too familiar with local politics. Global politics is more interesting.
22:58 <Schism> Right; you can disable the wifi portion of the modem and just set forwarding to your router, I guess.
22:59 <Cepheid> They won't have a problem with that?
22:59 <Schism> Not so much. But you don't want to actually BRIDGE the provided modem, because the TV services work on their own wifi setup, and it's finicky as all hell... oh, how many TVs you got going?
23:00 <Cepheid> One primary TV, two secondary TVs.
23:00 <Schism> Right, receivers are $7 extra after the first, so that adds there. How much is Rogers trying to ding you for?
23:00 <Cepheid> Oh, and I don't bridge. The modem's set up just as a modem and nothing else.
23:01 <Schism> Oh, that's ISP techsupport terminology. Disabling the routing portion is what we call 'bridging'.
23:01 <Cepheid> Ah.
23:01 <Cepheid> Any particular reason they dislike it?
23:02 <Cepheid> OR a better question.
23:02 <Cepheid> Rather than ask if they don't like it, do they FORBID it?
23:02 <Schism> They do not forbid it, no. But because the TV portion runs off the internet service and the modem itself, using a different 5G channel, it becomes extraordinarily finicky.
23:02 <Cepheid> I'm assuming from what you're saying is that they don't forbid it. They just don't like it be- Yeah.
23:03 <Cepheid> Ah. It uses 5G?
23:03 <Schism> Yeah.

23:03 <Cepheid> No problems there. Even though it's faster, this house is not well-designed for 5G. We use 4GHz.
23:03 <Cepheid> Er, 2.4GHz*
23:04 <Cepheid> In fact, not five feet from the router is a small outcrop wall that is filled with so much metal that it blocks the 5GHz signal from my PC.
23:05 <Schism> Hrmm. Might be tricky there, then.
23:05 <Cepheid> Yeah.
23:05 <Cepheid> I'm sure a solution can be devised that solves it, but yeah.
23:05 <Schism> There are options and means -- different locations for connection, for example. And there's this range extender option they provide.
23:06 <Cepheid> Yeah, that's likely going to be what we do, relocate the modem.
23:06 <Cepheid> My dad will talk with his co-worker, and we'll look into it, but yeah, they're trying to get us out of our current contract because it was grandfathered from an older contract we had, and they don't want us to keep this one.
23:06 <Cepheid> Especially since they gave us a 25% price cut.
23:06 <Schism> Hrmf, naturally.
23:06 <RazorSharpFang> My ISP doesn't do their configuration right - their routers respond with "Unreachable" when you try to ping them
23:07 <Cepheid> That...
23:07 <Cepheid> Is actually probably a security consideration.
23:07 <RazorSharpFang> Okay, but why even respond at all?
23:08 <Cepheid> So, what are you doing? ping from PC to the router?
23:08 <Cepheid> Or from the router to somewhere else?
23:08 <RazorSharpFang> Ping from PC to ISP's router (not located in my house)
23:09 <RazorSharpFang> And it responds that it can't reach itself.
23:09 <Cepheid> Router/Modem is probably set up to not respond to ICMP ping requests as a security consideration. Ping flooding used to be a DOS technique.
23:09 <RazorSharpFang> ping 10.20.25.96 : Reply from 10.20.25.96: Destination net unreachable.
23:10 <RazorSharpFang> It's lost, it doesn't know where it is.
23:10 <Cepheid> You sure it's not the ping tool reacting to the fact that it's not getting a response at all?
23:11 <RazorSharpFang> Uh, no. It times out when you ping and you don't get a pong.
23:11 <Cepheid> So it's specifically stating it's unreachable then. Hum.

23:13 <Cepheid> But then again, you're in Australia, right? Your internet services, from what I recall, are garbage. Er, no offense meant to you directly.
23:13 <RazorSharpFang> I would attribute it to poor configuration without a second thought.
23:14 <RazorSharpFang> What's also interesting is that we have the contract with IInet, but have a TPG-owned external IP, since TPG bought IInet. (IInet's gotten... worse since the takeover)
