01:45 <PinkieShy> I don't know why but reading the news about the new Nintendo Switch Mini and such..

01:45 <PinkieShy> I got a feeling from reading those articles that the mini isn't a update to the Switch series.. I feel like it won't take regular switch games at all and it'll be the replacement for the 3ds..

01:45 <PinkieShy> Maybe i am right or maybe i am wrong.. Time will tell i guess.

01:49 <Ali> Ugh, so much noise

01:50 * Ali boops PinkieShy as she HAS those on with noise going thru them

01:54 <Stormspark> um, the Switch Mini will run the same games as the regular Switch.  It'll just be more cheaply made (smaller screen, non-detachable joycons, no HD rumble) to fit closer to the 3DS price point

01:54 <Stormspark> that's the entire point of it

01:55 <Stormspark> it may or may not work with the regular Switch dock, but I'm sure it will be dockable (they aren't going to remove the USB-C port from the system, and that's also the charge port so)

04:40 <ConfusionRift> Yep, seems Ceph doesn't mind.

04:40 <ConfusionRift> I don't think Schism either. We still have to prepare though.

04:42 * DashedRainbows curls up while sucking her hoof. Nini

04:42 <ConfusionRift> Blarg, of course. They decided to fix the A/C right now that it's dark... in the middle of the mess of fireworks and gunfire. Be back in a bit.

04:51 <Cepheid> Yeah, I'll be tackling WoF on my own or with others tomorrow, or over the weekend.  Right now, what gaming I do is limited 'cause of temps.

04:51 <Cepheid> As it is, just playing FF14 spiked my room temperature up to 35.

04:52 <Ali> And that's with room AC Cepheid?

04:52 <Cepheid> No air conditioner, actually.

04:52 <Cepheid> I can't install one in this room, window's not the right type.

04:52 <Cepheid> I could do a portable model, but... yeah.

04:54 <Ali> Yeah I have to have an AC unit in my PC room cause well, people don't know how to design and air flow a house anymore

04:54 <Ali> So I try to keep the room 71F in the summer

04:55 <Ali> Also Cepheid, where did you make that statue thing?

04:55 <Cepheid> Statue thing?

04:55 <Ali> where you farmed slimes

04:55 <Ali> Cause I can change it to bait statues and just spawn them in that way

04:56 <Cepheid> You just place a statue, attach a timer to it using wire.

04:56 <Cepheid> That's all there is to it.

04:56 <Cepheid> Use a 1-second timer.

04:56 <Ali> No kidding :P

04:56 <Cepheid> As for where it is, I deconstructed it after use.

04:56 <Ali> Ah

04:56 <Ali> I just need a lot more fishing power to fish up more crates more frequently

04:57 <Cepheid> It was literally just a box, with an 8-block width interior.  Place the statue, wire it up, place a bucket of lava on the floor, turn timer on.

04:57 <Cepheid> Then watch things die horrible deaths in enclosed areas, wondering what kind of monster would do that to them.

04:59 <Cepheid> Anyways, I'm off to bed.

04:59 <Cepheid> It's late, and I don't want to mess up my sleep cycle too much.

04:59 <Cepheid> Plus the heat's getting to me.

05:00 <Cepheid> Think I might go out to Lowes and get the materials I need for that venting system tomorrow, in fact.

05:08 <Ali> Bleh, all that work for nothing

05:08 <Ali> They poof when you try to catch them

05:11 <Cepheid> Yeah they don't work with things you can catch.

19:11 <Cepheid> You like pretzels?

19:14 <Schism> Yes, though I haven't made them in forever.  I should bake some sodium carbonate and make some.

19:15 <Cepheid> There's something called Pretzel Crisps from the brand "Snack Factory", based on the bag I'm looking at.  Not sure where my sister got 'em, but they're basically really flat pretzels.

19:15 <Cepheid> They're amazing.

19:26 <Schism> Ahh.  I think I've had those before!  But what I really like are Snyder's pretzel bites.

19:26 <Schism> The jalapeno ones are particularly nomworthy.

19:27 <Cepheid> Oh gods, those yeah.

19:28 <Cepheid> I've stopped eating them, and have maybe a bag a month.

19:38 <Cepheid> Topic-change!

19:39 <Cepheid> I've been working on a very small game to satiate my desire for long-distance space trading/trucking simulators.  I'll release it when it's done in a few weeks.  But before that, I want to know, is there any features in existing space simulating games that you think would work well in such a game?

19:40 <Schism> Hmmm, I never played EVE long enough to really get a grip on those features.

19:41 <Cepheid> Aye.

19:41 <Cepheid> It'll be single player, unlike Eve.

19:41 <Cepheid> I might add multiplayer if there's enough demand for it.

19:42 <Cepheid> Hell I might implement it anyways so I can do something special.

19:42 <Cepheid> I'd like to generate a universe/world, have it run 24/7(Preferably in a low-power simulation mode), even when I'm not playing, and occasionally just hop in and explore and trade in a universe/world that's been going on without me.

19:43 <Cepheid> Basically, when I'm not online, the game updates once every second or so.

19:43 <Schism> Hmm, what features would be ideal for a game about market arbitrage.  Obviously, random events such as that which allowed Timothy Dexter to literally sell coals to Newcastle.

19:44 <Cepheid> Only issue would be in some sort of end-goal.  See, the game is more or less tailored to myself to satiate an itch.

19:44 <Schism> (If you're not familiar with Timothy Dexter, Cepheid, look him up.  The man was insane.)

19:44 <Cepheid> Heh.

19:44 <Cepheid> Basically, I just want something that can run in the background when I'm doing something, and occasionally will ping me whenever it's time for me to interact with the game for a few minutes.

19:45 <Schism> And heh.  Idle games are a neat idea, but I don't think I've seen one based around market arbitrage and shipping.

19:45 <Cepheid> AKA:  I look at the map, figure out what I should buy nearby, figure out somewhere far away to sell it, and then set an autopilot for a journey that'll take 15-20 minutes.

19:46 <Cepheid> Then when I get close to the destination, the game pings me, I go over to it, and carefully spend time maneuvering and docking, then doing the sale, repeat process.

19:46 <Cepheid> Or perhaps take a mining ship, go to an "asteroid belt" and take my time just mining stuff.

19:46 <Schism> Possibly have random encounters with pirates, mercenaries, and the like which CAN be left for the autopilot to do, but might provide better returns if the player takes an active hand.

19:46 <Cepheid> Yeah.

19:46 <Cepheid> In those cases, I'd have the system ping the player as well.

19:47 <Cepheid> "WARNING:  Possible hostile ship detected."

19:47 <ADragonHoarding> hmmm... the last "space trucking" style game I played was ... probably Rebel Galaxy? Which really wasn't even necessarily that.

19:47 <Cepheid> "WARNING:  Possible hostile ship approaching 1 kilometer distance.  Launching drones to combat."

19:47 <ADragonHoarding> Others that incorporated that as an option were... Space Rangers 2? I think?

19:47 <Cepheid> Or if the player decides to get active, weapons come online and you orbit the enemy.

19:47 <ADragonHoarding> And then if you go very old school, Wing Commander: Privateer.

19:47 <Cepheid> In any case, the entire game is being kept simple.

19:48 <Cepheid> Top-down 2D, using n-gonal shapes.

19:48 <ADragonHoarding> Are you looking to create an economy?

19:48 <ADragonHoarding> Or is this more along the lines of "take commission to move goods"

19:48 <Cepheid> I would at some point like to consider adding the ability to build stations that'll request resources, and produce goods, etc.

19:48 <Cepheid> So yeah, an economy would be a good idea.

19:49 <Cepheid> By keeping the art, UI and such simple, it'll be much easier for me to make this game than the other ones I'm working on.

19:49 <ADragonHoarding> Ah, in looking at what you've said earlier, this is more of a "setup automated thing"

19:49 <Cepheid> As it is, I already got basic producer/consumer stations implemented, a player ship, and such.

19:49 <ADragonHoarding> in which case the examples I thought of aren't similar.

19:50 <Cepheid> Yeah, much of it would be automated.  It's meant to mostly run itself, but the player can interact to speed things up.

19:50 <Cepheid> If I were to add any special goals or events, at most, the best I can think of is "alien swarm."

19:50 <ADragonHoarding> Then I recommend implementing scaling of player resources and the ability to have multiple player-owned entities.

19:50 <Cepheid> Mmhmm.

19:51 <Cepheid> As it is, the system's already designed with the concept of "forces" in place, akin to Factorio's concept of "forces"

19:51 <Cepheid> That is, a player belongs to a force, which has entities associated with it.

19:51 <Cepheid> And each force has some sort of "relation status" with regards to other forces.

19:51 <Cepheid> Currently it's a simple tri-state flag.

19:51 <Cepheid> "Enemy" "Neutral" "Friend"

19:52 <Cepheid> It was actually designed this way since the base engine was ported over from my danmaku engine.

19:52 <ADragonHoarding> In terms of progression, as it strikes me, I see the start point as, player has a single cargo ship. They start off by literally hauling goods. Look at a table or so of requests, plot a course, run it.

19:52 <Cepheid> Mmhmm.

19:53 <ADragonHoarding> Then, eventually, either ship gets upgraded with or player has the ability to swap to or get in addition a resource production vehicle.

19:53 <ADragonHoarding> so now they can get the goods themselves instead of only being able to buy.

19:54 <Cepheid> One thing I haven't decided on.

19:54 <ADragonHoarding> Next scale is ship production, with multiple cargo ships and etc., to have a true resource empire.

19:54 <Cepheid> To what level of customization should the ships have?

19:54 <ADragonHoarding> I'd say...

19:54 <Cepheid> As they say, simple is best, especially starting off.

19:54 <ADragonHoarding> start with just single types.

19:54 <ADragonHoarding> cargo transport

19:54 <Schism> Basic ship types with various modules, where larger ships have more slots?

19:54 <ADragonHoarding> mining or resource production

19:55 <Cepheid> Ships with set appearances, cargo size, mass, etc, but equipment can be changed.

19:55 <Cepheid> Like engines, weapons, etc.

19:55 <ADragonHoarding> stations for refueling and ship production

19:55 <ADragonHoarding> once you have the framework in place you can variance

19:55 <ADragonHoarding> but that's just how I would approach the creation of it.

19:55 <Schism> I'm kind of envisioning something like Gratuitous Space Battles there.

19:55 <Cepheid> AKA:  Akin to Eve's system, where ships are set designs, with certain attributes, but you can equip modules to change those attributes or weapons.

19:56 <ADragonHoarding> in fact were I building it I probably wouldn't even have threats in the earliest builds.

19:56 <Cepheid> A more complicated and interesting system would be a drag-and-drop, snap-into-place setup, but for that..

19:56 <Schism> Also, a sliding scale between mass and volume for the cargo may be a good idea.

19:56 <Cepheid> I think it'd actually be better to just make it cosmetic.

19:56 <Schism> Mmm, it'd be a nightmare to balance.

19:56 <Cepheid> Since implementing functionality based on the drag-and-drop, customized-appearance is funky.

19:56 <Cepheid> Look at Space Engineers.

19:56 <Cepheid> Having to put thrusters all over the place just to get 6-degrees of freedom.

19:56 <Cepheid> Massive thrusters at that.

19:57 <Cepheid> It can lead to some funky, weird looking designs.

19:57 <ADragonHoarding> to keep things simple, yes, keep visual changes to a minimum.

19:58 <Cepheid> I mean, there's one way I can think of to implement it while keeping the concept simple.

19:59 <Cepheid> You pick a core, which defines how many engines, weapons, and modules the ship will have.  When you go building the frame, you're expected to put exactly that number of engines and weapons on it, but the rest of the building blocks can be whatever.

19:59 <Cepheid> The only thing the builder would affect in that case is collision.

19:59 <Cepheid> Build large, you're an easy target.

20:00 <Cepheid> But, this is for later.

20:00 <Cepheid> Much later.

20:00 <Cepheid> I don't want to deal with all the special collision cases.  I'd rather keep them simple, right now.

20:01 <Cepheid> Use a simple oval/circle/box to detect whether a potential collision has occurred, then drill down to figure out whether the collision has actually occurred.

20:01 <Cepheid> The most complicated feature is going to be the distances.

20:01 <Cepheid> I want travel to take time, and I'd like to avoid loading screens as much as possible.

20:02 <Cepheid> I've determined that using 64-bit integers would allow for some pretty extreme distances, depending on the units I use.

20:02 <Cepheid> A signed 64-bit integer, down to approximately millimeter or centimeter accuracy, would allow for somewhere around 61,000 AU of area.

20:02 <Cepheid> Or range, rather.

20:03 <Cepheid> For comparison, pluto's about 40 AU out.

20:04 <Cepheid> Meanwhile, the milky way galaxy is about 30 kiloparsecs across.

20:04 <Cepheid> Which is about 6187950000 AU.

20:04 <ADragonHoarding> how many AU in a kiloparse-

20:05 <Cepheid> I can do the math to figure out what bit size is necessary for that.

20:05 * Schism calculates pi to a reasonable number of digits. 12 seems about right.

20:06 <Cepheid> ... Thank you google calculator, your exponential form is really helpful.

20:06 <Cepheid> The galaxy is approximately 9.2570414e+20 meters across.

20:08 <Cepheid> That would require an integer with 93 bits.

20:08 <DerpyBot> New post on Equestria Daily by Sethisto: Drawfriend Stuff (Pony Art Gallery) #3029 [ http://tinyurl.com/y3qrsccd ]

20:08 <Cepheid> So a 128-bit integer would be sufficient for representing our galaxy down to beyond millimeter precision.

20:08 <Cepheid> Since we're not at 128-bit systems though, I'd have to fake it.

20:08 <Cepheid> Split the galaxy into sectors.

20:14 <Cepheid> Yeah, I think I'll use a faux galaxy.

20:15 <Cepheid> Tempting as it is to create an open-world, no-loading-screen randomly generated galaxy..

20:15 <Cepheid> It'd take approximately 100,000 by 100,000 "sectors."

20:15 <Cepheid> Of course, I know that this kind of large-scale generation isn't impossible

20:15 <Cepheid> Dwarf Fortress does it, as does No Man's Sky, then there's Elite Dangerous and the Elite series in general.

20:17 <Cepheid> I don't have to generate the world up-front.  A general "overview" can be generated, stored, and then when the player approaches or enters a sector, the game generates the content for that sector based on the overview.

20:17 <Cepheid> But again, future plans.

20:18 <Cepheid> I should keep it simple.  Let's keep it to a single solar system.

20:18 <Cepheid> Light speed travel still takes a long time anyways.  The distance from the sun to the earth is 1 AU, and it takes approximately 8 minutes for light to travel that far.

20:19 <Cepheid> So if I limit the speed to the speed of light, it'll take minutes to an hour for within-system travel.

20:20 <Cepheid> Which is sufficient for what I'm looking at.

20:20 <Cepheid> I am also keeping the physics simple with respect to solar systems.

20:20 <Cepheid> Everything has a circular orbit around something else.

20:21 <Cepheid> It's not realistic, yes, but the issue with generating solar systems with realistic gravitational physics between solar intrasolar objects is...  Yeah.

20:21 <Cepheid> It's definitely feasible to do the physics with a PC, it's no problem.

20:22 <Cepheid> It's creating a solar system that won't just go "Oh, look, pluto just collided with Earth, and Saturn just flew into the sun."

20:23 <Cepheid> Creating solar systems with realistic gravitational physics that have stable orbits is hard to do.

20:24 <Cepheid> I don't know of any physics books that would detail where to even begin.

20:25 <ADragonHoarding> if you want to include inter-system travel, you can set up a gate system

20:25 <ADragonHoarding> also, remember how you want to keep things simple

20:25 <ADragonHoarding> are you building a game, or a physics simulation?

20:25 <ADragonHoarding> so yeah, don't worry about modeling accurate solar system dynamics.

20:25 <ADragonHoarding> gamers aren't going to really care much.

20:28 <Cepheid> Like, for example, when a player leaves a system, we can stop simulating that system constantly, and do an update say, every 5 seconds so that CPU-controlled stuff can still dock at stations, etc..

20:28 <Cepheid> And because I'm using exact circle orbits, figuring out where planets are every N seconds is just a case of doing some simple trig.

20:28 <Cepheid> Meanwhile, for asteroid belts, I'm gonna cheat.

20:29 <Cepheid> Each time you warp to the belt, even to the exact same coordinates, asteroids are going to be regenerated.

20:30 <Cepheid> In reality, I don't think a single person would ever be able to expend an entire asteroid belt, or even a section of one.

20:30 <Finwe> o3o

20:30 <Cepheid> So the idea of maintaining asteroid state is silly.

20:31 <Cepheid> Of course, that could be done.

20:31 <Cepheid> When a player warps to an asteroid belt, create a new POI(Point of Interest), with a set range, and all the asteroids generated in it are part of that POI and saved.

20:31 <Cepheid> When the player leaves, the POI is unloaded.

20:31 <Cepheid> When the player returns, be it to the exact coordinates of the POI, or within a certain range of it, place the player accordingly relative to the POI, then load the data for it.

20:35 <Cepheid> But yeah, I'm willing to do the gate approach, ADragonHoarding.

20:35 <Cepheid> It seems loading-screenish in a sense, but it's not.

20:36 <Cepheid> World's basically gonna be open, and if a person is insane enough to want to travel to another system without a gate, they'll be free to do so.

20:36 <ADragonHoarding> ehhh, masking a loading screen with a transition animation is a well-known and time-honored tradition.

20:36 <Cepheid> Mmhmm.

20:37 <Cepheid> I won't be doing NMS "planetary approaches".  I might consider it at a later date, if the idea is sound, but..

20:37 <Cepheid> Yeah.

20:38 <Cepheid> Mining's also a tricky subject for me.

20:38 <Cepheid> There's two approaches to handling it.

20:38 <Cepheid> The EVE Online approach is the simple one.  You apply a mining laser to the asteroid, it's density/volume decreases, and when it reaches zero, it simply despawns.

20:39 <Cepheid> The complex approach is a voxel approach.

20:39 <Cepheid> Again, since it's all 2D, and it's not sprite work, it's all polygons, lines and such, it's more straightforward to implement voxel approaches compared to Space Engineers and other games that use voxels.

20:41 <Cepheid> Simple is best though, so EVE approach.

20:42 <Cepheid> Voxel approach, I know how to do it, but it'll be a feature for later, or even the next iteration of the game.

20:42 <Cepheid> In any case, I'm working on the UI.

20:45 <Cepheid> Biggest issue there is adapting my input system to work with a more complicated UI setup.
