00:06 *** Joins: PinkieShy (coolm@Pony-ck81je.67-212-45-net.sccoast.net)

00:10 <Cepheid> I'll get mine tomorrow.

00:12 <Schism> Hmm?

00:12 <Schism> In this case, scrubbing linoleum.

00:13 * Schism pours out the dark grey water.

00:14 <Stormspark> I've heard the goose game is fun for about 5 minutes then you realize it's all just memes

00:16 <Schism> Dunno about memes...

00:16 <Stormspark> ugh these Spyro speedways

00:16 <Stormspark> it's literally 90% of the length of the game.  Each world takes a couple hours at most, then the speedway of each world takes 6+ hours and hundreds of attempts bare minimum

00:17 <Stormspark> the sequel makes it worse because you not only have to beat it, you have to beat a certain time, and it's not just an optional challenge, it's required to complete the game

00:37 *** Quits: Bubbles (EvaSh@Pony-1t0s0g.cable.virginm.net) (Connection closed)

01:33 <Cepheid> I am awake.  Sort of.

01:36 <ADragonDreaming> I might have the wherewithal to move some things on the server.

01:37 <Cepheid> I can offer an hour and a half of time myself.

01:40 <Cepheid> Maybe less because of what I just did.

01:42 <Cepheid> My mother gave me my seroquel to consume, earlier.  50mg.  Well, someone left another 50mg on my desk, and before remembering that my mother gave me the dose earlier, I consumed the one on my desk.

01:42 <Cepheid> I just consumed 100mg of seroquel in one evening.  That's the maximum dose.

01:42 <ADragonDreaming> whoops

01:43 <Cepheid> Given what 75mg does to me, 100 will knock me out for a good long time.

05:33 <Schism> It rolls down stairs, alone or in pairs, and crushes your neighbor's dog...

05:33 <Schism> It's great for a snack, and fits on your back!  It's log, log, log!

05:35 <Tirek> Clean one up for the crew, stick it in your brew

05:36 <Tirek> That's apparently something small breweries do. They stick an entire log in their vat.

05:37 * Ali noms on Schism legholes

07:29 <ConfusionRift> Hello everypony.

07:30 <Schism> Mornin'.

07:31 * Schism boops the ConfusionRift with a set of Area Boosters. Rather important for leveling above 60!

07:32 <ConfusionRift> Most definitely. :P

07:32 <Schism> If you don't just want to kill 39,000 Hedgehags.  That's a possibility too.

07:33 <ConfusionRift> Nope! No thank you have a good day bye.

07:41 * ConfusionRift might... MIGHT get back to La-Mulana.

07:44 <Schism> How far did you get, anyway?

07:44 <ConfusionRift> I haven't jumped back till now.

07:45 * ConfusionRift points at BL3. "Trying to finish this as well."

07:46 <Koopz> the epic exclusive deal made me completely forget about it's release

07:46 <ConfusionRift> And that's why I went with the console version. :P

07:47 <ConfusionRift> Then again, all the others I got on console. So... pfffttt, to the exclusive.

07:47 <Koopz> heard news about Rockstar Games? apparently they want to roll out a new launcher

07:47 <Koopz> everyone instantly fired their shots "another store?!"

07:48 <ConfusionRift> So.. is it a multi-company platform, or is it gonna be exclusive to Rockstar Games... games.

07:48 <Koopz> afaik they shipped their games with launchers for quite some time now

07:49 <ConfusionRift> Many have.

07:49 <Koopz> or at least i remember you had to login into the Rockstar Games launcher to be able to play GTA IV online

07:51 <Koopz> not sure what their goal will be but if it's just to unite the launcher for all their games into a single one, fine in my book. If they're trying to establish yet another platform to buy games on, they'll probably run against walls

07:51 <Finwe> Good morning, my diminutive pastel-coloured perissodactyls.

07:51 <Koopz> RAdm. Finwe o7

07:51 <Finwe> Lt Cdr ConfusionRift, Capt Koopz.

07:51 <Finwe> o7

07:51 <ConfusionRift> There's really no point, especially when they have their games in another launcher.

07:51 <Finwe> Mr Schism.

07:51 * Finwe doffs his hat.

07:51 <ConfusionRift> RAdm. Finwe. (salutes)

07:51 *** Joins: danwellby (danwellby@The.lone.griffon)

07:52 <Koopz> i understand the need for the launcher. They use their own infrastructure for the multiplayer, theoretically supporting cross-platform multiplayer

07:53 <ConfusionRift> Like that stupid BL2 launcher. I know it doesn't do anything or affects the game or anything in any way, but it's another layer to go through before launching the actual game.

07:53 <ConfusionRift> That I understand.

07:53 * Finwe noms on Koopz's launcher.

07:53 <Koopz> oh yeah those dumb things that require you to press an extra play button for no apparent reason are indeed silly

07:54 <ConfusionRift> Everything, and I mean EVERYTHING in the launcher is in the game's main menu. The launcher was unnecessary.

07:55 <Koopz> Warframe is silly too, offering the game on Steam but not using their infrastructure to roll out updates, you have to "start" the game and the launcher opens, checking for updates

07:56 <Schism> Yay, Crucifix.  Those two-coloured ghosts won't hurt Lemeza in THIS run.  But... where the heck is the one to prevent Bats...

07:56 <ConfusionRift> Okay? "We don't want Steam to distribute the updates. We will do that ourselves."

07:56 <Koopz> obviously they're just too lazy to roll out updates through 2 different infrastructures

07:57 * ConfusionRift takes his controller out, then sighs.

07:57 <Koopz> it's pretty silly. You can register an account on their website and download the game from there or automatically register through Steam

07:57 <ConfusionRift> Okay, I shouldn't be this pessimistic about the game, especially when I last stopped I was faffing for an hour.

07:58 <ConfusionRift> See, that makes no sense.

07:58 <Koopz> there's also Gaijin

07:59 <Finwe> Koopz: Indeed.

07:59 <ConfusionRift> I'm sure there was a game that double-checked for updates. Through Steam, and in their launcher.

07:59 <Schism> It's alright to be pessimistic about La-Mulana, ConfusionRift.

07:59 <ConfusionRift> I shouldn't be. I wasn't like this.

07:59 <Koopz> all the Gaijin Entertainment MMOs are available through Steam and native launcher too

08:00 * Finwe only knows War Thunder.

08:00 <Koopz> Crossout is kinda fun

08:00 <Koopz> it's basically Lego + Mad Max Setting

08:00 <ConfusionRift> The reason why I jumped in the first place was because it reminded me of some of the old adventure games and platformers, like QuackShot.

08:01 <ConfusionRift> Why haven't they remade that one?!

08:01 <ConfusionRift> They remade Castle of Illusion (which sorta bunked at one point). Why not QuackShot?

08:02 <ConfusionRift> Oh, and Duck Tales.

08:02 <Koopz> Duck Tales was available for NES

08:02 <ConfusionRift> They remade that one as well... and they used the original actor for the voiceover.

08:02 <Koopz> World of Illusion is a Sega game

08:03 <ConfusionRift> Eeerm... point?

08:03 <Koopz> i'd say Duck Tales reached a larger audience

08:04 <Koopz> hold on... the Duck Tales remake was a crowdfunding campaign iirc

08:04 <Koopz> i backed that thing

08:04 * ConfusionRift thuds. :P

08:05 * Schism gets a couple of late-game items from the Inferno Cavern.

08:05 <ConfusionRift> Castle of Illusion wasn't, and got remade. https://store.steampowered.com/app/227600/Castle_of_Illusion/

08:06 <Schism> Yay... another uselessish item.

08:06 <ConfusionRift> And I think QuackShot will still do well... then again, my opinonion.

08:07 <Koopz> hmm... can't tell you why Sega didn't remake QuackShot

08:07 * ConfusionRift shrugs.

08:07 <ConfusionRift> Ooooh, I think I knoooow.

08:09 <Koopz> because the studio was closed after the Castle of Illusions release

08:10 <ConfusionRift> QuackShot takes place in actual places around the world. There might be some controversy if the use real world references.

08:10 <ConfusionRift> Aaaaand that too.

08:11 <Schism> Okay, is this game going to give me the hand scanner and glyph reader at any point?  Maybe the helmet?  That'd be nice.

08:12 * ConfusionRift gives Schism a boot to the head. As in an actual boot that falls from the ceiling and hits his head.

08:13 * Schism dies. Welcome to La-Mulana!

08:16 <ConfusionRift> Where was I... ah yes, The Temple of the Sun... and Moon.

08:17 <ConfusionRift> "Aim and Shoot." | What does that- wait. (shoots this vase through this tiny nook) Are. You. Serious. I'm stupid.

08:18 <Schism> Yeah, that one's a pain to do though.

08:18 <ConfusionRift> Got it easy. It was more of a "why I never thought about that?" situation.

08:25 <ConfusionRift> Is there really an advantage to the knife aside from faster attack rate?

08:25 <Schism> It swings downwards.

08:26 <ConfusionRift> Oh, so you can deal with... lizards and pests...

08:26 * ConfusionRift sighs. "The game expected you to have the knife."

08:46 <ConfusionRift> It was more of a "pain of 1 million amps coursing through my body" sort of reminder.

08:46 <Schism> Yeah, getting zapped like that is never enjoyable.  It's hilarious when you get zapped right before a screen transition, and the whole screen turns white for a second or two.

09:08 <Schism> That's a feature.  You need a specific piece of software to access that grail point.

09:09 * ConfusionRift thuds hard. "Of COURSE!"

09:12 <Schism> Places you can get to... hum.  Spring, Inferno, obviously Sun/Moon, Guidance (duh), Endless Corridor, the first part of the Twin Labyrinths (but you already have the Helmet)...

09:13 <ConfusionRift> That's where you get it. I never really explored that area further. I can get to the Inferno and BURN to a crisp. The other section of the labyrinth I guess is accessible through the moonlight section.

09:14 <ConfusionRift> And Eden is partially accessible.

12:29 <ConfusionRift> I thought that hint was for another room. Not this one. Also, I'm sure that's the Eye of Ra, not Wadjet.

12:31 <ConfusionRift> "Wadjet was closely associated in ancient Egyptian religion with the Eye of Ra, a powerful protective deity."

12:32 <Cepheid> It says in the first paragraph that the Eye of Ra is similar to the Eye of Wadjet.

12:33 <ConfusionRift> So yeah, confused to say the least. Also... not exactly a happy camper right now. :)

12:33 <Cepheid> So part of the confusion has to do with assuming that symbol is explicitly associated with Ra.

12:34 <ConfusionRift> Look, I felt that researching like that might be cheating. Was expecting some reference to it in game. So... yeah. I guess there was a bit of assumption and confusion.

12:35 <Cepheid> But yeah that one took me for a loop too.  Also, never assumr a riddle or puzzle solution is associated directly with the room it is found in.

12:35 <Cepheid> Researching the eye of wadjet is not cheating.  Researching the solution to the puzzle is.

13:28 <Cepheid> Custom worlds, more worlds, etc.

13:28 <ADragonHoarding> factorissimo certainly verifies that you can do the whole "other map" thing

13:28 <Cepheid> Someone even implemented a mod that allows moving items and players between servers.

13:28 <ADragonHoarding> I've been tooling around a bit with AAI vehicles in a singleplayer world

13:28 <Cepheid> Uses a mod plus an external tool, but it works.  Clusterio or something like that.

13:28 <ADragonHoarding> those are a fun change to the static building style of factorio

13:29 <Cepheid> Mmhmm.

13:29 <Cepheid> Someone found a way to pull off bridges over rails, too.  I'd have implemented it a bit differently, graphically, though.

13:29 * ConfusionRift flops. "That would be great."

13:30 <Cepheid> I'd use like a mound instead of an odd looking bridge.  But then, thats less work because the mound would require new train graphics.

13:32 <Cepheid> But yeah.  All the common, even some obscure, ideas have already been done.  And there is nothing for me to do.

13:33 <Cepheid> Aside from creating a tool that creates a tree view of required items to create one particular item.

13:34 <ConfusionRift> ...alchemy and transmutation?

13:35 *** Joins: LibrarianofHope (Librarianof@Pony-vrt.ugb.207.187.IP)

13:35 <Cepheid> The tree view would be nice.  Especially up front instead of having to add each and every relevant item to a list.

13:36 <Cepheid> Plus the tools don't combine like items into the equation and tell you how many assemblers you'd need total.

13:36 <ConfusionRift> Uuuummm... defense bots! No, already done. Hmm, larger armored vehicles for behemoths! No, also done. The battle trai- done, got it on the list. A... uummm... dunno, man. They have don'e a lot of things, even those that would be cool to have implemented in-game.

13:37 <Cepheid> With FP, I still have to calculate the number of assemblers I would need when multiple items in the production chain are the same.  Like plates, for example.

13:37 <ConfusionRift> Hah! How about... an electric train? Oh, and a steam train!

13:38 <Cepheid> It'd be nice to have two screen elements.  A table showing how many assemblers I'd need total, and then the graph of production.

13:38 <Cepheid> Already done Rifty.

13:38 <ConfusionRift> Oh.

13:38 <LibrarianofHope> morning

13:39 <ConfusionRift> Including a rolling power cell?

13:39 <Cepheid> Rolling power cell?  Care to explain?

13:40 <ConfusionRift> Like I mentioned... yesterday I think. Basically wagon specifically for storing energy. Then again, mostl likely implemented with the electric train mod.

13:41 <Cepheid> Not really.

13:41 <Cepheid> You fuel electric trains directly with batteries.

13:41 <Cepheid> But yes, a coal wagon for fuel, or gas wagon and such, would be an interesting change of pace.

13:42 <Cepheid> In fact...  Trains could use something of an overhaul.  Their current simple design leaves them overpowered.

13:42 <ConfusionRift> Ooooh! I was more thinking on a train that one can send to a station to recharge, rather than feeding it a bunch of AA batteries. :P

13:43 <Cepheid> Same with bots, actually.  I would prefer to see bots crash (and possibly damage buildings) when they run out of energy.  Or at least require solar panels, to explain how they fly indefinitely.

13:43 <ConfusionRift> Since one can unlock steam really fast, maybe make a weaker and slower brass (or copper) train for steam.

13:44 <ConfusionRift> Or at least flop on the ground. Making you pick them up from the ground.

13:44 <Cepheid> Aye.  Soft landing shutdown.

13:44 <Cepheid> Which seems the most reasonable approach really.

13:45 <Cepheid> Anyways, back in a bit.  I have to run to class.

14:00 <Cepheid> Apparently the prof insists on temporary "0" marks.

14:00 <ConfusionRift> "Temporary".

14:01 <Cepheid> Basically, you get a zero, but you're given a chance to go talk to the TA directly to show the assignment works.

14:01 <Cepheid> And then figure out what went wrong.

14:02 * Cepheid graghs. Finally, after an energy drink, the grogginess is going away. Still feels weird, but he's a bit more alert now.

14:02 <Cepheid> Anyhow, as for permanent combat bots..

14:02 <Finwe> Or permanent combat boots.

14:03 <Cepheid> It's hard to tell if that'd work.  The combat ones are timed.  The regular ones aren't, but usually only ever pop out when they have something to do.

14:05 <Cepheid> Yeah.

14:06 <ConfusionRift> So it could be possible to turn Factorio into an RTS like Starcraft.

14:06 <Cepheid> What you could potentially do is spawn an entity on the player force, associated with a player, and then simply have those entities path around, and along to, the player.

14:06 <lunanightwindphone> Yay my microphone should be here in the next 30 minutes

14:07 <ConfusionRift> Hmmm.

14:07 <Cepheid> It'd certainly be a better replacement idea to say, PSD.

14:07 <Cepheid> Which is overpowered as hell.

14:08 <Cepheid> That said, to balance it out, it'd be nice to limit the number somehow with relation to the number of roboports the player has.

14:11 <lunanightwindphone> Hi finwe

14:11 <ConfusionRift> See that would be nice.

14:11 <Cepheid> Permanent combat bots though would either need recharging via roboport, which would be a pain..

14:12 <Cepheid> I can make something in like an hour or two, when I get home.

14:13 <Cepheid> ... Huh.

14:13 <Cepheid> Cliff Explosives are capsules.

14:13 <ConfusionRift> Maybe they run on their own charge, with their own recharging station. Just like the other bots, they would drain the charge, with each time they attack increasing the energy cost. If it runs out, the player would have to pick the bot up and recharge it at its own station.

14:14 <ConfusionRift> Excuse me?

14:14 <ConfusionRift> They are capsule... well, that would explain how they work.

14:14 * Cepheid greps through the code to find out what kinds of action types there are.

14:14 <Cepheid> Cliff Explosives are capsules.  Their action is "destroy-cliffs"

14:15 <ConfusionRift> What else...

14:16 <ConfusionRift> I know this is a bit out there and probably redundant... but the player arsenal is lacking.

14:16 <Cepheid> It is, yes.

14:16 <ConfusionRift> then again, it's Factorio. Automation is the name of the game... almost literally.

14:17 <Cepheid> ConfusionRift, you know guns.

14:18 <Cepheid> I know of the basic pistol, which is pull-trigger-fire-one-bullet.  No idea what that classification is.  But what's the difference between that, semi-automatics, and full-automatics?

14:19 <ConfusionRift> Semi-automatic means that firearms fires once per trigger pull. Full automatic means the firearm continues to fire while the trigger is held.

14:20 <Cepheid> Why is semi-automatic once per trigger pull?

14:20 <Cepheid> That's not really automatic in any way.

14:20 <Cepheid> Unless it refers to how chambering another round is automatic.

14:21 <ConfusionRift> ^

14:21 <ConfusionRift> That's basically it.

14:21 <Cepheid> Since the only other firearm type I'm familiar with is in regards to musket shot guns and such.

14:21 <Cepheid> Where you have to manually reload the round.

14:21 <Cepheid> The classifications are weird.  Becuase by that definition, a revolver is a semi-automatic.

14:23 *** Quits: lunanightwindphone (lunanightwi@Pony-udvr2n.u5c1.m0d9.1000.2600.IP) (Quit: Quit)

14:23 <ConfusionRift> It isn't, because technically the cylinder is also the chamber. So it's kinda like having the round already chambered at all times. Unlike a semi-auto, which cycles through the empty cases and new rounds.

14:23 <Cepheid> throw, equipment-remote, destroy-cliffs, artillery-remote, and use-on-self.  These are the acceptable actions for capsules.

14:23 <Cepheid> Mmm.

14:23 <Cepheid> So in terms of weapons in Factorio..

14:24 <ConfusionRift> But I admit, classifications are weird, confusing, and sometimes nonsensical.

14:24 <Cepheid> Both the handgun and SMG are automatics.

14:24 <Cepheid> Since they fire so long as you're holding down the fire button.

14:24 <Cepheid> As far as behaviour, that's automatic.

14:24 <ConfusionRift> Technically, yes.

14:24 <Cepheid> The character itself could potentially be pulling the trigger once, etc.

14:24 <Cepheid> But as far as gameplay functionality, it feels like an automatic.

14:24 <Cepheid> I'm not even sure if that can be changed.

14:25 <ConfusionRift> The closest to semi-auto would be the shotgun and rocket launcher.

14:25 <Cepheid> Even those will auto-fire if held.

14:26 <Cepheid> Hell, after enough upgrades, they're pretty fast at firing.

14:26 <ConfusionRift> Hmmm, right. Forgot.

14:26 <Cepheid> Shotgun can get to 2 rounds/sec.

14:26 <Cepheid> Combat shotgun 4 rounds/sec, in IR, at least.

14:26 <Cepheid> I know you can add new bindings for using things.

14:27 <Cepheid> But, programmatically firing a weapon?  Not sure if that can be done.

14:27 <ConfusionRift> Hmmmmm.

14:27 <Cepheid> Well, if bindings can be made.

14:27 <Cepheid> Then by logic, a binding to a lua function should be possible.

14:28 <Cepheid> Which can then be used to determine if the player has released the button since the last trigger, to do semi-automatic.

14:28 <ConfusionRift> There's a chance the functions for firing and how fire rate is involved would have to be reworked.

14:29 <Cepheid> Yeah, but it doesn't need to be.

14:29 <Cepheid> That said, the API docs don't cover how to implement bindings.

14:29 <ConfusionRift> Yarp.

14:30 <Cepheid> Ah.  LuaCustomInput class.

14:30 <Cepheid> Well, LuaCustomInputPrototype.

14:30 <Cepheid> So that means the binding is loaded during initial game load.

14:31 <Cepheid> Well, simplest way to figure it out would be to look at a mod that I know has custom bindings, really.

14:32 <Cepheid> "script-only" consuming type..

14:32 <ConfusionRift> But yeah, would be nice to have other things aside from the current arsenal. I know the current covers the basics, but maybe you want to upgrade from that peashooter, and don't have the materials for an SMG or shotgun yet.

14:33 <Cepheid> Ah.

14:33 <Cepheid> "on_event" receives an event with the key name specified.

14:34 <Cepheid> And it's registered, etc.

14:34 <Cepheid> So when the key is pressed, an event is sent, and the handler receives it, and processes is.

14:34 <Cepheid> Er, it*

14:34 <ConfusionRift> Hehehe. It would be funny to start you off with a black powder pistol, instead of a semi-auto. :P

14:35 <Cepheid> Thus, in theory, I can listen for the "fire weapon" event, and consume it, and prevent it from being passed on.

14:35 <Cepheid> By doing that, the standard weapon firing algorithm stops functioning.

14:36 <Cepheid> Could use this to create two modes of firing, too.

14:36 <Cepheid> Precision firing, which uses the standard firing method, where you start walking at a slower speed.  To indicate that you're taking your time to aim, etc..

14:36 <Cepheid> Or what many games called "hip firing"

14:36 <Cepheid> Where you run along and just spray gunfire.

14:36 <Cepheid> And pray.

14:37 <Cepheid> Which would keep your movement speed normal, etc.

14:37 <Cepheid> At the cost of accuracy.

14:37 * ConfusionRift nods.

14:37 <Cepheid> Of course, precision firing with movement makes no sense with semiautomatics, so..

14:37 <ADragonHoarding> FYI, Cepheid

14:37 <Cepheid> 'Cause you'd have to hit the button repeatedly to fire.

14:38 <ADragonHoarding> AAI programmable vehicles

14:38 <Cepheid> I haven't tried them.  I want to, though.

14:38 <ADragonHoarding> leverages biter AI for vehicle movement, so a bit derpy

14:38 <Cepheid> Yeah.

14:38 <Cepheid> It leverages biter pathfinding, rather.

14:38 <Cepheid> I could do an implementation of A* in Factorio, though.  Get better pathfinding, at a cost of performance hits.

14:38 <ADragonHoarding> Aye

14:38 <Cepheid> Anything implemented in LUA will perform worse than in C, C++.

14:39 <Cepheid> So it'd have to trigger like, once every half second, or every second.  Preferably spread out with entities.

14:39 <Cepheid> Not all entities at the same time in one swoop.

14:39 <ADragonHoarding> For example, because AAI programmable vehicles use biter pathfinding, the miners try to path around trees.

14:40 <ADragonHoarding> But the miners cut trees down and put the wood in their inventory, so they should just ignore trees and go right through instead

14:40 <Cepheid> Mmhmm.

14:40 <ADragonHoarding> but better pathfinding would be quite the endeavor

14:40 <Cepheid> Really, everything is already there for pathfinding as is.

14:40 <Cepheid> It's just making it efficient that's the issue.

14:40 <ADragonHoarding> I think.

14:40 <Cepheid> Yes and no.

14:41 <Cepheid> A* is actually a pretty efficient algorithm, to begin with.

14:41 <Cepheid> And the algorithm is called A-Star, for the record.

14:41 <Cepheid> So "A-Star"

14:41 <Cepheid> ...

14:41 <Cepheid> Damnit, ADragonHoarding.

14:42 <Cepheid> I want to implement an A* pathfinding algorithm in the game now.

14:42 <Cepheid> As a library.

14:42 <ADragonHoarding> I wonder if the Pavement Driving assist already functions with programmable vehicles pathfinding...

14:42 <Cepheid> Assuming it doesn't already exist.  There's a library called stdlib for generic functionality.

14:44 <Cepheid> Doesn't look like ith as pathfinding.

14:44 <Cepheid> Has a lot that can contribute to ease of it, though.

14:45 <ADragonHoarding> I volunteer to help set up obstacle courses and testing scenarios.

14:45 <ConfusionRift> :P

14:45 <Cepheid> Heh.

14:45 <Cepheid> Feel free to do so.  If you do, though, I'll need explicit details.

14:46 <Cepheid> Those obstacle courses and testing scenarios would become part of the testing framework.  That is, stuff like the exact path taken, would have to be calculated, written down, and verified each time the library is modified and built.

14:47 <Cepheid> So for example, you'd have to give me a list of squares the unit passes through, that I can compare against, along with starting and ending position.

14:47 <Cepheid> Time is less of a concern, because it's hard to test against, and more something I'd set up myself, since I'd expect the algorithm to pass certain time constraints for finding a path.

14:47 <Cepheid> The only problem with creating such tests is that the algorithm has to be run "by hand" so to speak.

14:48 <ADragonHoarding> Aye. Though, what would this be pathfinding for? I'm guessing standard car and tank?

14:48 <Cepheid> Can be anything that moves, really.  Biters, cars, tanks, bots, player characters, etc.

14:49 <Cepheid> Player characters are technically a unit, so you can actually spawn more of them and move them around via scripts.

14:49 <Cepheid> That said, they're a special kind of unit.

14:49 <Cepheid> Since they're the only unit you can attach a player to.

14:50 <Cepheid> The A* pathfinding algorithm itself..

14:50 <Cepheid> Well, I'd set it up with two types of pathfinders.

14:50 <Cepheid> One for trains.  One for units/vehicles/biters/bots/etc.

14:51 <Cepheid> It'd have more functionality too, like whether to ignore solid objects in the way(for flyers), or trees(vehicles that destroy trees without damage, or minimal damage), or specific buildings in general.

14:51 <Cepheid> OR other entities.

14:51 <ConfusionRift> Hmm, another thing that comes to mind. Do you remember the ol' alien research? I know it was removed, but it's probably still in the game somewhere. Would have been nice to use that for actual alien research, like making tech that is used to manipulate biter behavior or to make biters more friendly.

14:52 <Cepheid> Officially, alien science packs are gone from the game.

14:52 <Cepheid> But the ability for destroyed(killed, building destroyed, etc) entities to drop stuff is still there.

14:52 <ConfusionRift> Hmmm.

14:52 <Cepheid> You have "on_entity_died" and other similar events.

14:52 <Cepheid> You can listen for certain types of entities who die, then place items at their death spot

14:53 <ConfusionRift> Then again, probably the same event used for when the player dies and drops their inventory.

14:53 <Cepheid> Entities being biters, bots, players, buildings, trees, vehicles, anything that is "placed" and exists as a physical thing you can interact with.

14:53 * ConfusionRift nods.

14:54 <Cepheid> For basic terminology:  Entity - Anything that can be placed, damaged, removed, manipulated in some way, or interacts with the player as an "object" in the game world.

14:54 <Cepheid> Tile - A small square the player walks on, this includes unwalkable tiles, like water.

14:55 <Cepheid> Surface - One of many worlds.  Nauvis, the planet we play on, is a single surface.  It always exists.

14:55 <Cepheid> Up to 4 billion surfaces can exist. o3o

14:55 <ConfusionRift> Hmmmm!

14:55 <Cepheid> Of course, if you had that many, there'd be problems

14:55 <Cepheid> You'd need a lot of memory.

14:56 <ConfusionRift> Yep, space travel should eb a thing.

14:56 <ConfusionRift> *be

14:56 <Cepheid> I'm sure my PC, for example, can handle 4 billion surfaces.

14:56 <Cepheid> As I have 32 GB of RAM in it.

14:56 <ConfusionRift> Same as I. :P

14:56 <Cepheid> That gives me...

14:56 <Cepheid> 8 bytes per surface.  Okay, so maybe less than 4 billion.

14:56 <Cepheid> But it can definitely handle a few hundred million.

14:57 <ADragonHoarding> There are mods that put alien artifacts back in and use them for stuff

14:57 <ADragonHoarding> Krastorio, for example

14:57 <Cepheid> Yeah, there's those.

14:57 <Cepheid> Bobs also has alien artifacts as well.

14:57 <ADragonHoarding> and ConfusionRift for space travel, check out space exploration.

14:57 <ADragonHoarding> or warptorio

14:59 <Cepheid> For the record, in testing A*, I don't even need an entity that moves along the path.

14:59 <Cepheid> Usually before the entity moves, the path is calculated and stored, often associated with the entity so it can use the data as it moves.

15:00 <Cepheid> So all I need is a pre-computed path to test against.

15:00 <ADragonHoarding> I think what I'll do is set up some wall mazes

15:00 <ADragonHoarding> set up some possible factory layouts

15:00 <ADragonHoarding> that sort of thing

15:00 <ADragonHoarding> send you the maps/scenarios

15:01 <Cepheid> Right, right.

15:01 <Cepheid> That'd help.

15:01 * ConfusionRift liking what he sees with Krastorio.

15:01 <Cepheid> Yeah, I might run a Krastorio server in the future, after we've "won" IR.

15:01 <ADragonHoarding> note Krastorio has built-in support/integration for Industrial Revolution.

15:01 <Cepheid> In the meantime, you're free to join us on the IR server.

15:02 <Cepheid> Copper->Bronze->Iron->Steel->Chrome->???

15:03 <Cepheid> We're currently in the nebulous Iron-Steel phase.

15:03 <Cepheid> Slightly before Chrome.

15:03 <ConfusionRift> All of it would be a learning experience once I jump in, if I jump in. :P

15:04 <Cepheid> It is, yeah.

15:04 <Cepheid> It's a lot to take in.

15:04 <Cepheid> Because it expands basic products and intermediates a lot, to account for the way Factorio scales it's resources.

15:05 <Cepheid> Basically, to get anything done fast, you need massive production and processing facilities.

15:07 <ConfusionRift> Hmmm, will check it out at some point.

17:05 <Cepheid> Why do I feel like I am babysitting them?  They don't even have any idea what they are supposed to do for the project.  I had to spell it out it explicit terms for them.

17:06 <Cepheid> I don't even want to be team lead for the project.  I was forced into the position due to experience with software and gamedev.  And unlike these two, I'm not in the gamedev program.

17:06 <Ali> This is why I hate team projects

17:07 <Cepheid> I repeat, I am not a gamedev student.  They are.  They have no idea what they are doing.  They put a general purpose programmer into a position for a project in a program of study I am not a part of.

17:07 <Ali> Cepheid, and this is why we have AAA games that are buggy messes

17:07 <Cepheid> At this point I may as well be carrying them.

17:08 <Cepheid> Unfortunately the AAA messes are a side effect of other problems.

17:08 <Cepheid> The biggest one being assigning new graduates to AAA projects.  The other being that theh assign graduates because experienced developers come and go

17:09 <Cepheid> Apparently the turn-around is relatively high in software dev overall.

17:09 <Cepheid> Not uncommon to hear of developers working on one game for five years, then leaving the company to work at another company, and repeat the process.

17:11 <Cepheid> Case in point.  One of the main devs of starbound left after a few years.  Went to make his own game.  Staxel.

21:11 <Cepheid> No.

21:12 <Cepheid> There's a bug with some motherboards with respect to the Ryzen 3000 series CPUs.  Apparently in a rush to get the motherboards out ASAP, the manufacturers of the motherboards did a sloppy job on the firmware.  As a result, issuing an RDRAND instruction to the CPU doesn't return the expected randomness.

21:13 <Cepheid> Apparently it has to do with how the motherboards handle suspend and resume.

21:13 <Cepheid> Basically, it looks like the CPUs have a bug, but they don't.  It's in the motherboards.

21:14 <Cepheid> However, not all motherboard manufacturers are providing fixes.  And as a result, the Linux kernel has to do a sanity check to determine if it should use the RDRAND instruction or not.

22:33 <Schism> Mainly, I want those three 1.0 themes.  o3o

22:34 * Schism also plays 'Civilizations'. "La hee~"

22:34 * Filly_Nightmares gnaws on Schism

23:04 <PinkieShy> It was awesome :D

23:04 <PinkieShy> The way it ended.. I feel like there could be a sequel to it..

23:05 <Schism> I'd not be surprised.

23:06 <PinkieShy> I could do a little spoiler if you want.. but i don't think that would be a good idea.

23:17 <LibrarianofHope> if someone tried to help those that feel that level of despair instead of just branding them as mosnter, we would be in a better way

23:26 <DashedRainbows> I used to watch random dudes play games before

23:26 <DashedRainbows> it wwas fun sorta

23:26 <Schism> This is good to know.  Desmos is finally taking off amongst educators, which means that before long, folks might not have to spend $100 on a graphing calculator which hasn't changed for since 1991.

23:26 <Schism> form*

23:27 <Schism> (Okay, okay, not THAT long, but the TI-84 is from 2004.  And ... it's not exactly a great piece of equipment.)

23:27 <Schism> 24kb RAM, a 96x64 pixel screen, and it runs on 4 AAA batteries!  All for $150 USD.

23:29 <Schism> Some impressive stuff here: https://thehustle.co/graphing-calculators-expensive/

23:35 <LibrarianofHope> what are those for anyway?

23:36 <Schism> In the US and Canada, the vast majority of algebra classes -- algebra 2 and above, anyway -- require a graphing calculator.  Same goes for many of the math courses in colleges and universities.

23:36 * PinkieShy hands DashedRainbows a real life Pikachu that looks and acts like the one from the movies.

23:36 *** Quits: danwellby (danwellby@The.lone.griffon) (Connection closed)

23:37 <Schism> While a graphing calculator application would be a perfectly reasonable choice for many educators, the industry, led by TI (which, for all intents and purposes, IS the industry), have lobbied for a long time to keep the status quo the way it is, so they can sell a calculator which is less powerful than a Gameboy Colour.

23:41 * Ali boops Schism, she did Algebra 2 without a calculator

23:42 <LunaNightwind> just a little too low? or was i mumbly

23:42 <Schism> Ali: Aye, but I'll bet they were still trying to get you to -buy- one.

23:42 <Ali> Nope

23:42 <Ali> It wasn't until trig/precal that I had to have a graphing one

23:42 * Schism is shocked. Then again, he did Algebra 2 in Texas.

23:42 <DashedRainbows> algebra 2 needs one?

23:42 <Ali> Then again I graduated in 02 :P
