10:21 <Tirek> That sounds like fun if it were actual DnD.

10:23 <ConfusionRift> Yeah, I'm kinda staying away from the hard ones as well. Well, kinda. With the last one being La-Mulana, and I sure am not going to explore beyond that. Also, I think you can be this sort of monster tamer in RLCraft. Of course, we already agreed that it might be something to stay clear off.

10:23 <ConfusionRift> I've just been watching some other people play it.

10:24 <Tirek> Oh, yeah there's taming.

10:52 <RazorSharpFang> Fnei?

10:53 <Tirek> Oh boy

10:53 <Cepheid> Morning.

10:53 <RazorSharpFang> Hey Cepheid

10:53 <Tirek> Mornin'

10:53 <ConfusionRift> Yep, this annoyed me enough.

10:54 <ConfusionRift> Hey there.

10:55 <Tirek> I find I'm incredibly bored watching minecraft vids on youtube.

10:56 <Tirek> There's a lot of menu sitting in modded games, and a lot of repeating similar things for different machines.

10:56 <Tirek> Kinda wish Youtube had a 3x video speed option.

10:56 <Tirek> A lot of minecraft youtube players tend to speak slow enough that I probably could do a 3x vid speed.

10:57 <Tirek> And I generally watch a lot of videos at 2x speed regardless.

10:59 <Cepheid> I generally can't stand Minecraft or Factorio playthroughs.  I hate the commentary.

10:59 <Tirek> I always kinda wanted to do a LP of modded Minecraft without commentary at all to see if its possible.

11:00 <RazorSharpFang> Maybe there's a market for commentary-less lets-plays

11:00 <Tirek> There's only one person that does it, I think, and that's the long-play guy.

11:01 <Cepheid> Yeah there is a market for it, definitely.

11:02 <Cepheid> The problem I have is mostly with respect to understanding what they are saying, rather than the actual talking.  Stupid hearing problems and all that.

11:06 <RazorSharpFang> Sometimes the youtube subtitles aren't terrible.

11:08 <ConfusionRift> Well, this one I just watched had some of those issues. They were two players in the video, with one of them talking reeeaaal slooow for whatever reason, almost emotionless. The other was just not connecting the dots together, and was faffing around with simple things. He ended up looking fro a guide to do things, which is understandable, but he still struggled with it.

11:10 <ConfusionRift> "Right click with the flint in hand on a HARD SURFACE to break it into fragments.", and yet he would constantly walk a mile way to break flint on a brick block, instead of using the cobblestone block that was right at their home.

11:12 <ConfusionRift> Oh. Oh no. It seems I also have things that I hate about some of these videos. Huh.

11:17 *** Joins: darkdoomer (kayanamasha@Pony-drmsa3.rev.numericable.fr)

11:18 <ConfusionRift> ANYWAYS... ahem... (pokes Cepheid) In terms of hard drives, since I forget how this mess worked again, how do RPM and cache size affect performance?

11:19 <Finwe> The faster the disc is spun, the faster it can be read.

11:20 <Finwe> And more cache means faster data transfer from the drive to main memory.

11:20 *** Quits: Ali (Ali@Pony-cvibue.iplsin.sbcglobal.net) (Quit: Leaving)

11:21 <ConfusionRift> I... I just had a major brain fart. Of course. I'm so sorry.

11:26 <ConfusionRift> The reason why I was kinda confused about that was because there are many high capacity drives that are relatively cheap, and have larger cache. However, the faster ones, which had lesser cache space were more expensive. Then again, in case of performance in terms of gaming and such, faster drives with lesser cache would make more sense, since the priority would be read speed. With larger cache being for archival purposes, so...

11:26 <ConfusionRift> in bulk they are.

11:27 *** Quits: darkdoomer (kayanamasha@nowhere.eq) (Connection closed)

11:27 *** Joins: darkdoomer (kayanamasha@Pony-drmsa3.rev.numericable.fr)

11:36 * Golden flops. He is planning a trip to Galaxy's Edge so he can get a custom lightsaber, and Droid.

11:37 <Cepheid> Ah, sorry.  I went AFK.

11:38 <ConfusionRift> No worries. I actually wasn't sure why it didn't made sense earlier, but I got it. :P

11:39 <Cepheid> Speed of the drive affects seek time and power consumption.  Conventional drive speed is 7,200 RPM.  Meanwhile, the cache size does affect read speed, but primarily for large, sequential files.

11:39 * Lumindia yawns, awakens

11:39 *** Quits: darkdoomer (kayanamasha@nowhere.eq) (Connection closed)

11:39 * Golden has yet to go to sleep.

11:40 <Cepheid> Since what usually happens is when a sector is read, the sectors following are read into the cache, in the event the data is needed shortly after.

11:40 *** Joins: darkdoomer (kayanamasha@nowhere.eq)

11:40 <Cepheid> Rather than wait for a request to read the next sector, which may involve waiting for the disk to do a complete revolution.

11:42 <Cepheid> These days, for best performance with platter drives, you want fast speed, large cache, and drives with controllers that work with 4KiB sectors.  The type of connection also matters too.

11:43 <Cepheid> You want SAS or SATA.  In fact, after this decision, further performance can be achieved through a hard-drive addon card instead of using the onboard controller.

11:45 * Filly_Nightmares shiver floof

11:45 <Cepheid> Onboard motherboard controllers aren't the best.  That doesn't make offboard controllers better all the time, though.  There is also the issue of cost.

11:45 <Cepheid> Those controllers are expensive.

11:49 * Finwe ruffles a Filly_Nightmares.

11:50 * Filly_Nightmares shivers at Finwe for warms!

11:50 <ConfusionRift> The reasons why I was making sure, was because one of my drives is starting to show some wear. According to the disk info, it's been running almost non-stop for 4 years.

11:51 <Cepheid> Heh.  And you are debating replacing it.  Not a bad idea.  Platter drives are cheap and good for long-term storage.

11:52 <Finwe> Static and frequently accessed data on SSD and variable data on conventional HD is probably a good solution for the time being.

11:53 <ConfusionRift> So here comes the dilemma. I can either get a brand new drive that runs at 5400 RPM, but has a cache of 256MB. Or get a drive that runs at 7200RPM, but has a fraction of the cache (32MB I think). Both are around the same price, and are of the same capacity.

11:53 <ConfusionRift> Finwe: I know what you're talking about, but am unsure how to get that working.

11:54 <ConfusionRift> Wait, wrong thing.

11:54 <Cepheid> Dynamic data on an SSD is fine.  The whole "capacity drops over time if you write lots" is a half-myth.

11:54 <ConfusionRift> Actually, seems to affect more of a specific type of SSD.

11:55 <Finwe> Speed should be the quality to be affected.

11:55 <Cepheid> SSDs use wear leveling.  The writes are spread out over the drive.

11:56 <Cepheid> In order to adversely affect an SSD drive's capacity these days, you would have to run a server that writes to the drive 24/7 non-stop.

11:56 <ConfusionRift> ...

11:57 <ConfusionRift> I got Windows on the SSD, and I tend to leave the system running overnight.

11:57 <Cepheid> In such a case, yeah, you will see capacity loss after a few months.  But the average user won't achieve it.

11:57 <Cepheid> I said constant, non-stop writing.

11:57 <ConfusionRift> Oooooh.

11:58 <Cepheid> Windows isn't writing 24/7 non-stop.

11:58 <ConfusionRift> Yeah, you're right. And I also have updates on hold, unless they're priority ones.

11:58 <Cepheid> Even then.

11:58 * ConfusionRift nodnods.

11:59 <Cepheid> I've been using an SSD in my laptop.  I use it to write code on a daily basis.  Compilation does a hell of a lot more writing than your average user's use case.

11:59 <Cepheid> You know how much the capacity dropped over 4 years?

11:59 * ConfusionRift shrugs.

11:59 <Cepheid> Less than 1%.

12:00 <ConfusionRift> And how big is the drive?

12:00 <Cepheid> 128GB.

12:01 <Cepheid> I can't get the actual percentage, because the SMART report doesn't provide subinteger precisionm.

12:01 <ConfusionRift> Hmm, yeah, it ain't much.

12:02 <Cepheid> Meanwhile, a platter drive under the same conditions would start showing wear and tear for me.

12:04 <Cepheid> Yes, each bit cell has somewhere between 10,000 writes to 100,000 writes depending on the tech used, but the controllers are designed to spread the writes out to avoid wearing the out faster.

12:06 <Cepheid> In fact, there's actually a way for me to determine sub-integer precision.  Give me a moment.

12:07 * Cepheid updates Factorio server host machine. Should have done this a while back, but meh. Will do it now.

12:07 <Cepheid> Been neglecting this thing again.

12:09 <Schism> In today's brief 'well done, moron' bit of amusement: https://twitter.com/kevinmitnick/status/1200685472630001665

12:09 <Cepheid> No, when it comes to technology these days, the things you should be looking out for are more the smaller things that NO ONE TELLS YOU ABOUT.

12:09 <Cepheid> Like how, when you pick up USB cables for USB3 to USB-C, you should be looking for cables with a 56k ohm pullup resistor.

12:09 <Cepheid> Because manufacturers are cutting corners by removing the resistor.

12:10 <Cepheid> That resistor is required to avoid damaging equipment connected to the cable.

12:10 <ConfusionRift> Schism: Pffffttt!

12:11 <ConfusionRift> Cepheid: That... I had no idea, and that's pretty bad.

12:11 <Cepheid> Yep.

12:12 <Cepheid> That missing pullup resist was actually the cause behind all those damaged Switches a few years back, among other technological breakdowns.

12:12 <Cepheid> The equipment works just fine without it.  Up until it doesn't.

12:12 <ConfusionRift> Luckily, I don't use USB-C.

12:12 <ConfusionRift> ...thing about mentioning the Switch...

12:12 * Finwe USB-C's at Cepheid.

12:12 <Finwe> and ConfusionRift.

12:12 <Finwe> o3o

12:13 <ConfusionRift> Yesterday, I found it on, for no reason. And it had an error screen. No idea what that was about.

12:14 <ConfusionRift> I also completely forgot the Switch uses USB-C. then again, being using the base most of the time.

12:14 <ConfusionRift> I only got one USB-C cable, and that's for the SNES controller.

12:16 <Cepheid> Long as you aren't hooking the Switch up to a USB-C charging plug for smart phones, or a PC, etc, etc, etc.

12:16 <Cepheid> As for the error, given the Switch sits in standby mode 99% of the time, there's an increasing chance over time that you will encounter at least one error.

12:17 <ConfusionRift> Probably the system realizing I have registered -1 steps with that system on hand. :P

12:18 * Golden falls over as Golden.Exe has stopped working.

12:19 * Cepheid takes a look at EO3 data. o3o

12:19 <Cepheid> New day, rested eyes.

12:19 <ConfusionRift> Oh boy... :P

12:19 <Cepheid> Maybe I'll see another pattern.

12:20 <Schism> "Protect health providers who disclose protected health information if they're doing it in good faith." --part of Kamala Harris' platform.  Gee, that's wonderful, I'm glad that information will be shared freely with those most likely to abuse it.

12:20 * Cepheid sighs as this hex editor doesn't support 3-byte groupings.

12:21 * Schism sighs, then runs off to work. Another 10-hour day in the salt mines.

12:21 * Cepheid puts Schism on the Kwama mines instead.

12:21 <Schism> "Why is my order failing?" "BECAUSE you're in PAPUA NEW GUINEA, you twit."

12:22 <Cepheid> I know that this data is stored as groups of 6 bytes, because the last 3 bytes of each group is an increasing integer number.

12:23 <Schism> More frustratingly: "While I know you want an additional 15% over the exorbitant 50% we've already given you on your order to resell over in China, I'm afraid that we can't stack discounts."

12:23 <Cepheid> With some exceptions, that is.

12:23 <Cepheid> But those exceptions appear to be special cases.

12:23 <Schism> Yes, that's why they're exceptional.

12:23 <Cepheid> As the entire 6-byte group is not like the others.

12:24 <Schism> I depart!  </PhotoFilter>

12:24 <Cepheid> Later, Schism.  Take care.

12:25 <Schism> You too.

12:25 * ConfusionRift gets a bit stressed. Decides to huggle his penguin plush. "H E L L O." ...decides to BURN his penguin plush.

12:25 <ConfusionRift> Have a good one!

12:26 <Cepheid> But yeah, here's an example of the data:  D002 003D 6500, the 3D6500 is the increasing number.  Then on the next line, we got D002 007A 0BB4.  Then it goes back to 08C0 00E7 6500.  Hmm.  I wonder if I got the starting offset wrong, because it seems like that 08C000 should be paired with the 7A0BB4.

12:28 <Cepheid> Well, there's multiple sets of these 6 bytes that are different, so let's extract 'em all, decode to binary, and see if there's any patterns.  o3o

12:29 * ConfusionRift shrugs. "Wish I knew more."

12:30 * ConfusionRift looks at the time. AAAAAAAH.

12:33 <Cepheid> The only recurring pattern I see is that bit 0 is always 0 on these entries.  In the rest, because the numbers increment by a value that's always a multiple of 2, bit 0 is always 1.

12:41 *** Joins: RyuImperator (RyuImperato@Pony-trb5lu.dip0.t-ipconnect.de)

12:45 <Cepheid> I'll finish this later.  I gotta get ready and head in to the school.

13:19 <Finwe> Good night!

13:40 * Cepheid flops onto a train.

13:47 <Cepheid> I should run all the archived files through a magic number counter.  See how many of the files of each type there are, then associate the magic numbers with an extension through the relevant counts.

13:48 <Cepheid> Only catch is, some of the magic number counts will be off.  There are 7 files with no extensions.

13:49 <Cepheid> Plus there is no guarantee that every file has a magic number.

13:52 <Cepheid> Might also be worthwhile running the game code through a disassembler, and seeing if I can find any functions or subroutines that poke at the basic files.

14:43 <Cepheid> The preparedness of this Tim Hortons at my school is a joke.  Opened 10 minutes late.  None of their food is stocked yet..
