00:07 <Cepheid> I remember when one of the two biggest deals about liquid cooling was that it was quiet, in comparison to fans. Guess it no longer holds that distinction.
00:08 <Cepheid> Even liquid cooling systems make use of fans these days anyways.

00:14 <Cepheid> Not surprised. The same happens here in Ottawa when major storms approach.
00:14 <Ali> Well this is stupid
00:14 <Ali> Cause by law if you're under a Tornado watch and they issue a Severe Thunderstorm Warning, it sets the Tornado sirens off.

00:30 <Ali> Hmmm that is very stupid and odd
00:31 <Ali> Storms are two counties away, why are they blowing the sirens now
00:33 <Cepheid> Submitted a ticket.
00:34 <Cepheid> I really want to know why HWInfo says those two sensors are reporting temperatures in the millions, and a CPU OPT fan speed in the millions.
00:35 <Cepheid> I'm assuming it's a bug in the software.
00:35 <Ali> Could be
00:35 <Cepheid> Gotta say though, seeing a CPU that usually rested at 60C in idle, now resting at 32C idle is nice.
00:35 <Ali> But lordy I wish they would change the siren effects
00:35 <Ali> Cause they just went off and there's not a storm for another 20-40 minutes
00:35 <Ali> I get early warning, but this is a bit rediculous
00:36 <Cepheid> So, now that the thermal paste has had time to bake in, let's see..
00:37 <Cepheid> At 4GHz overclock, full load with Prime95(A situation that'll never actually happen in gaming, for the record..)
00:37 <Cepheid> 72C.
00:37 <Cepheid> The thermal throttling limit is 95C.
00:38 <Ali> Mine is idling at 60C Cepheid
00:39 <Cepheid> For a stock cooler that's about normal.
00:40 <Cepheid> Final temp, 73C after a few minutes of running Prime95. Thermal limit is 95. Recommended limit is 85. And since this is UNDER FULL 100% LOAD, this indicates I can go a bit further with overclocking if I want.
00:40 <Ali> Not sure if stock, since it was semi custom
00:40 <Cepheid> No game will load the CPU as much as this right now.
00:41 * Ali has never heard of Prime95
00:42 <Cepheid> It's a program designed for calculating large prime numbers. It's primarily used for stress testing memory and CPU overclocks, though.
00:42 <Cepheid> Because it can be set up to put the system under extreme load, generating max heat, or max power, etc.
00:43 <Cepheid> Usually when a major overclock is performed, it's best to run Prime95 afterwards for a full 24 hours to test stability.
00:43 <Cepheid> If it survives 24 hours, you're usually considered good.
00:48 <Cepheid> So yeah, at full load, I can hear the fans, definitely. Still quieter than the stock cooler BY ITSELF.
00:51 <Cepheid> Oh, they finally updated the FF14 launcher, did they?
00:51 <Schism> Yup, that they did.
00:51 <Cepheid> Still not DPI aware, though.

00:52 <Cepheid> Already did.
00:52 * Schism noddles.
00:52 * Ali licks Schism nosie
00:53 <PinkieShy> Do you think twitch would allow me to stream a game that is political
00:53 <Schism> Probably.
00:54 <Cepheid> Yes.
00:54 <Cepheid> The problem you'll have is the people watching the stream.
00:55 <Cepheid> So, after a few hours of X4 Foundations... Yes, the game runs slowly around stations, but I'm willing to forgive it, because there's apparently a good reason for this now.
00:55 <Cepheid> Outside of the initial load, which apparently induces a memory strain load of NINE GIGABYTES, there are no load screens.
00:56 <Cepheid> And the transitions between sectors are silky-smooth. Like, no pauses, no hitching, nothing.
00:57 <Cepheid> Which means that the game actually has pretty much the entirety of the game world loaded into memory. It's likely running a full "universe" simulation constantly.
00:57 <Schism> ... Huh.
00:58 <Cepheid> And it's pretty impressive for one other reason.
00:59 <Cepheid> It's being run almost entirely in one thread. The game uses up to three threads, but one thread is used for the simulation, while the others appear to be for something else. Possibly managing memory or resources.
00:59 <Cepheid> The slowdown isn't due to graphics bogging things down. It's being caused by the CPU that's running the simulation being loaded so hard that it slows down graphics rendering.
01:00 <Cepheid> This is an example of why single-thread performance is generally still considered the best factor in making a CPU purchase for gaming.
01:00 <Cepheid> Games mostly still run on a single thread. Even Factorio suffers from this.
01:01 <Cepheid> The game uses a wide array of rendering threads, but that's just rendering.
01:01 <Cepheid> The logic of the game, that is, updating positions of items, processing construction of items, etc, etc, etc..
01:01 <Cepheid> That's all on a single thread.
01:03 <Cepheid> The reason for this is determinism.
01:03 <Cepheid> If you start processing worlds on multiple CPU cores, then determinism goes out the door unless you do a lot of synchronization, at which point the performance gains tend to go out the door.
01:06 <PinkieShy> Finally got through this world 2-4
01:06 <PinkieShy> err 4-2***
01:06 <Cepheid> Nowadays, and currently, most games use multithreading to handle resource loading(Commonly seen in the form of texture streaming, where textures start off low resolution and increase in quality over time as higher resolutions are loaded), and to improve rendering performance through APIs like Vulkan, DX12 and Metal by using multiple command streams among other things(I think, anyways. I haven't worked with those APIs
01:06 <Cepheid> personally.)
01:09 <PinkieShy> heh beat the game..

01:17 <Cepheid> Since the files are plaintext(They're massive XML files, apparently), they compress pretty densely, to boot.

07:13 <Ali> Math is funs

07:16 <Ali> I remember Algebra 2 and I never used a calculator

13:07 <Cepheid> You have a list, [8, 3, 2, 2, 2, 4, 5]. It's pretty obvious how to sort it. We get [2, 2, 2, 3, 4, 5, 8].
13:08 <Cepheid> But the problem is, is [2, 2, 2, 3, 4, 5, 8] distinct from [2, 2, 2, 3, 4, 5, 8] or [2, 2, 2, 3, 4, 5, 8]? Does it matter? *Looks crazy now*
13:09 <Cepheid> The problem is in the fact that in the original list, [8, 3, 2, 2, 2, 4, 5], we have three instances of the number 2, stored at index 2, 3, 4, in that order. Each 2 is distinct. Some algorithms will sort them by placing the 2 at index 4, before the 2 at index 2, and so on.
13:10 *** Quits: DBB (DataByteBro@Pony-9c6ovs.e8tt.q24m.0242.2601.IP) (Ping timeout: 121 seconds)
13:10 <Finwe> Distinguishabilitiy or indistinguishability of those elements is a matter of definition.
13:10 <Cepheid> A stable sort is where the order of duplicate instances in memory is retained. That is, the 2 at index 2 comes first, the 2 at index 3 comes second, and the 2 at index 4 comes third, even after the list has been sorted.
13:11 <Cepheid> An unstable sort meanwhile, the ordering of duplicate entries is irrelevant.
13:16 <Cepheid> The heap sorting algorithms, meanwhile... They are more a side effect of the nature of the heaps themselves.
13:18 <Cepheid> A heap is a data structure that, when implemented, and then filled with data, will ensure that the largest or smallest value is always at the root node. As a result, if you have a max heap of integers, and insert a set of numbers, then each time you remove the maximum value in the heap, the next highest value will be placed at the top of the heap.
13:19 <Cepheid> Basically, sorting with them simply involves taking the jumbled set of numbers, shoving them into the heap, then repeatedly extracting the maximum value until the heap is empty.
13:20 <Cepheid> Works the same way with a min heap, only in that case, you have to apply a reverse operation on the output to get the correct ordering.
13:21 <Cepheid> As for why there are so many danged algorithms in the first place. Many of them are designed for specific scenarios. Limited RAM. Certain types of instructions supported/not supported by a CPU architecture. Size of the sets to be sorted. Stability.
13:22 <Cepheid> A fast, complicated algorithm could actually be slower on a set of 200 integers than a slow, simple algorithm on the same 200 integers, for example.

13:35 <Cepheid> My favourite sorting algorithms will always be bogosort and random sort. Former is a variation of the latter that only considers the unsorted items. Random sort, meanwhile, is where you take your whooooollle set of numbers, and shuffle them. Then check to see if they're in order. If they aren't, you shuffle them again, and check to see if they're in order.
13:35 <Cepheid> You keep doing this until eventually, you hit that one-in-gods-only-knows chance of getting the sorted set.
13:36 <Finwe> Random sort has universally best best case.
13:37 <Finwe> It also has universally worst worst case.
13:37 <Cepheid> Pretty much. It's entirely possible, though unlikely, that after one shuffle, your entire set is sorted, thus making it a constant time operation.

13:40 <Cepheid> I think random sort is actually better than some sorting algorithms out there. There are some algorithms that are designed such that while they do achieve the end-result *EVENTUALLY*, they're designed to be utterly impractical.
13:41 <Cepheid> From a computational perspective, shuffling the same set over and over and over constantly would execute faster than say, performing a sequence of instructions intentionally designed to cause page faults, memory thrashing, cache misses and the like to intentionally trip up the CPU.

20:44 <Starlight_Glimmer> I was looking forward to playing some DOOM Eternal. Of course we can't have nice things especially if Bethesda was involved in any way. The game suffers from weird mouse input lag even in the menu that makes me feel dizzy when playing. I guess that's the 2nd Bethesda/id Software game series I'm not going to continue due to technical issues.
20:44 * Ali nibbles on Starlight_Glimmer ear
20:45 <Starlight_Glimmer> Sure I can now spent time figuring out what's wrong, but that's my bucking day job. I just wanted to play for once.
20:46 <Starlight_Glimmer> Glad I wasted half an hour cleaning up my desk of all the home office stuff I have to setup again next week.
20:53 * Ali huggles Starlight_Glimmer
20:59 <Starlight_Glimmer> I think I might have fixed it? Not even sure I want to continue at this point

23:19 <Cepheid> Software cursors are indeed a pain in the arse.
23:23 <Cepheid> I'm not actually sure why they have input lag when the games themselves during gameplay don't seem to exhibit the same input lag.
