11:06 <Cepheid> Yeah that's one bug I had.
11:07 <DerpyBot> New post on Equestria Daily by Calpain: Morning Discussion #1968 [ http://tinyurl.com/y9lw4hlo ]
11:07 <Cepheid> It's easily dealt with by talking to any NPC.
11:07 <Cepheid> The only other bug I encountered was more beneficial than harmful. Also it happened in earlier games too, so isn't specific to BL3.
11:08 <Cepheid> I encountered one of Zero's assassination hunts. One of the enemies would, on occasion, jump to the player and deal impact damage.
11:09 <Cepheid> I died at one point. Apparently the respawn was timed just right. When I respawned, the enemy had finished jumping to me. He jumped from the combat area all the way across the map to the respawn point.
11:09 <Cepheid> Wherein I then murdered the hell out of him since he was alone.
11:13 <ConfusionRift> Hah! Yeah, those happen. Very rarely though. There was one in which, for some odd reason, the boss' health didn't reset... so easy kill.
11:14 <Cepheid> Yep. Those two bugs are prominent throughout the series though.
11:15 <Cepheid> I've seen the jumping one happen primarily in BL2 and TPS. Healthbar one in all games. Mostly in BL2, relating to The Warrior.
11:16 <ConfusionRift> Oh and one of the bad ones. When certain enemies or bosses don't spawn for some weird reason. Alas, i think that one's due to some issue with a function trigger.
11:16 <Cepheid> Despite the well-tested nature of that fight, there are some silly bugs with it. Especially in the earlier versions of that game.
11:17 <Cepheid> Like being able to shoot the Warrior from safe spots OUTSIDE the arena.
11:18 <ConfusionRift> That one... I did abuse of that one a few times. :P
11:18 <Cepheid> Honestly, the bugs in recent games have me somewhat concerned for the future of gaming. And part of the source of the problem? Microsoft, Sony, and the insistence that they keep pushing the visual envelope.
11:19 * ConfusionRift sighs. "It's been my grievance for years now."
11:19 <Cepheid> It seems like, the more realistic the games get, visually and physically, the more bugs that start to appear.
11:20 <ConfusionRift> Comes part with complexity. Though, sometimes, the game is much shorter and simpler, yet bug ridden. Which makes you wonder.
11:20 <Cepheid> Which implies that these days, more and more time is being spent on the visuals and making them work rather than the gameplay logic and making that robust.
11:21 <Cepheid> Which is why, right now, I am hesitant to praise the PS5 and the new XBox.
11:22 <Cepheid> They have a lot of power in a PC-sized form, and probably cost a fraction of a PC, which I won't lie is pretty enticing. But it's gonna come at a hidden cost.
11:23 <ConfusionRift> Same the PS5 release conference... for the first time in a very long time, nothing really calls my interest. Once again, gonna way for a massive price drop, or not bother with it.
11:24 <ConfusionRift> *Saw, not same.
11:24 <Cepheid> Truth told, I want to experiment with the raytreacing. One of these days I should just sit at my PC and do just that.
11:24 * Cepheid has an RTX board, so can play with the raytracing.
11:25 <ConfusionRift> And due to the massive praise of nothing but graphic intensity from the Xbox, I stopped caring for it as well.
11:25 <Cepheid> I wonder how long the raytracing functionality will remain on the GPU.
11:25 <Cepheid> Video cards, despite decreasing process sizes, continue to get larger and larger due to cooling requirements.
11:26 <Cepheid> We're gonna hit a limit. Offloading of the raytracing to a dedicated card might be the next move.
11:27 <Cepheid> Of course that would come at a performance impact. But these days...
11:27 <ConfusionRift> My other grievance is that eventually, to get the most horsepower out of the machine, you're expected to have certain TVs or monitors, meaning more money in replacing those.
11:28 <Cepheid> SLI isn't really taking off as well as it was believed it would. The problem being cost, and the requirement that the cards be very similar, if not identical. And software needs to be designed around it.
11:28 <Cepheid> Instead of using SLI to connect video cards together, use it to connect a video card to a ray tracer card.
11:29 <ConfusionRift> Eeerm... if you're gonna SLI, you would want to have similar cards. In this case, two RTXs.
11:29 <Cepheid> Or, we design a new interconnect/bus that allows high-speed communication between two devices on the same bus. Though I think that already exists.
11:29 <Cepheid> That's why I said similar or the same.
11:30 <Cepheid> My point is, if we can connect two cards together by using a bridge to provide higher-speed communication, then we can do the same for a video card and say, a specialized ray tracing card.
11:30 <Cepheid> To keep the size of both devices down.
11:31 <Cepheid> But if history has proven anything, add-on cards for dedicated stuff is falling out of practice. These days you might not even have dedicated cards for audio anymore.
11:32 <Cepheid> We tried to create a new type with PhysX, but that was bought out by nVidia and folded into GPGPU instead.
11:32 <ConfusionRift> I think I kinda get it... but it slowly gets to the point of "might as well just get one beefy card". And yeah, add-on cards are getting phased out.
11:32 <Cepheid> And even then, many games using it don't even bother with the GPU when it comes to PhysX.
11:33 <Cepheid> You can set your system to use the GPU, but it is up to the game to decide what the PhysX work is done on.
11:33 <Cepheid> And many games just use the CPU.
11:33 * ConfusionRift nods.
11:33 <Lumindia> I remember getting a MIDI Card back in the day
11:34 <Cepheid> Audio cards still provide a benefit. To a degree.
11:34 <Cepheid> Its becoming less and less of one though due to multicore CPUs.
11:35 <Cepheid> The initial benefit of them was offloading various bits of audio processing to, again, dedicated chips and processors.
11:35 <Cepheid> However, in today's day and age? If you have a quad core system, then 3 cores are likely enough to run a game, while the fourth core does all the audio work.
11:36 <Cepheid> In my case I have even more headroom. I have an octacore CPU with 2 threads per core, so 16 logical CPUs.
11:36 <ConfusionRift> Or they use an external amp to get more out of whatever was processed by the PC.
11:36 <Lumindia> "Gee billy, how come your mom lets you have EIGHT cores?"
11:37 <Cepheid> Because I wanted 8 for programming purposes.
11:37 <Cepheid> Larger projects take more time to build. The more threads you have, the better.
11:37 <ConfusionRift> I was planning on streaming and the such... but that never happened.
11:39 <Cepheid> Yeah, streaming and recording are big deals, too.
11:39 <ConfusionRift> Work has shot my nerves hard, and really don't have it in me to go with that.
11:39 <Cepheid> I really, really abused that with my Rabi-Ribi recordings.
11:40 <Cepheid> High-quality compression, 1080p@60, hours at a time.
11:40 <Cepheid> One or two cores would always be busy, but the game never faltered once, nor did the recording.
11:40 <ConfusionRift> Oh, and my online service is pretty garbage.
11:41 <ConfusionRift> Then again, Rab Ribi shouldn't be an issue. Doom was something else. :P
11:41 <Cepheid> I was recording, specifically. Not streaming.
11:41 <Cepheid> My upstream is pretty bad for streaming. 10MBits/sec.
11:42 <Cepheid> For the record?
11:42 <Cepheid> Borderlands 3 uses all the cores it possibly can.
11:42 <ConfusionRift> Not surprised.
11:42 <Cepheid> Average usage is around 30%-40% across the board. At least one core tends to be near 80% though, which is probably the main thread.
11:43 <Cepheid> Doesn't explain why the game still stutters, though. Though I'm slowly isolating the cause of that, and I suspect it's the GPU.
11:43 <Cepheid> At 1080p, "Badass" settings(Basically everything maxed out", the GPU hovers at 90% usage.
11:43 <Cepheid> Goes up to 100% in some special cases. This implies that the game is currently GPU bound. So any stuttering I'm seeing is likely in response to that.
11:44 <Cepheid> That said, it could also be the filesystem implementation the game uses. The game does not benefit in any visible way with respect to SSDs and platter drives. Speaking of SSDs...
11:44 * Cepheid goes to get a USB3 enclosure, to check something.
11:46 <Cepheid> My dad brought home a 250GiB SSD from work, originally part of a repair kit, but was never used. Dell doesn't want it back, and it's been sitting on his desk unused for months, so he gave it to me. I want to see what the internal specs are according to the OS.
11:46 <Cepheid> Let's look up the model online..
11:47 <Cepheid> Hum, it's not a consumer model.
11:51 <Cepheid> Looks to be a 64-layer 3-bits-per-cell TLC device.
11:52 <Cepheid> It's on par with what's in my laptop.
11:56 <Cepheid> ...
11:57 <Cepheid> Geezus, this sheet has way more information on this drive than it necessarily needs to reveal.
11:57 <Cepheid> Besides physical dimensions, capacities, etc..
11:57 <Cepheid> It also lists pinouts, and all the commands it can receive and respond with.
11:58 <Cepheid> The only thing it doesn't tell me is what kind of chips are used, and what block sizes are used, and whether or not block size emulation is used.
12:00 <Cepheid> Hmm.
12:00 <Cepheid> It uses Koxia chips. Koxia is a spinoff of Toshiba that handles memory.
12:01 <Cepheid> The chips in question appear to be 3D TLC flash.
12:03 <Cepheid> Overall, seems to be a low-end, cheap drive. Probably $40.
12:06 <Cepheid> Seriously, why are there pinouts and command specs?
12:07 <DerpyBot> New post on Equestria Daily by Sethisto: 31 Awesome Fanfics to Read For Celestia Day! [ http://tinyurl.com/ybcyf3f7 ]
12:11 <Cepheid> It's unfortunate that this laptop doesn't have an NVMe controller.
12:11 <Cepheid> It has an M.2 slot for a drive, a small one.
12:12 <Cepheid> I can't expand the memory in this laptop that much. I'd need an LPDDR3 16GiB or larger DIMM for that. And I'm not sure those even exist.
12:12 <Cepheid> So the alternative would have been to use the M.2 slot to put in a small capacity SSD, and then make the entire thing a swap drive.
12:13 <Cepheid> Performance would still be crap after exceeding the 8GiB I use on this laptop, but at least SSDs perform faster for swapping than platter drives. o3o
12:13 * Cepheid checks something because he thinks he made a stupid comment.
12:14 <Cepheid> ... Right, there's no controller, per se.
12:14 <Cepheid> The slot is just a PCIe port, and the controller is built into the device.
12:15 <Cepheid> At least, for NVMe.
12:17 <Cepheid> I see an empty PCIe port. Wonder if that's the slot.
12:17 <Cepheid> The next problem in line is the SIZE. It's M.2, but it's got very little available space for a card.
12:19 * Cepheid would have to examine the board more carefully to figure out what the size is, and whether it's SATA or NVMe capable.
12:19 <Cepheid> Anyhow, back to this drive.
12:23 <Cepheid> Hum, looks like, despite the internal tech, that this drive is more advanced than what's in my laptop. Might be worth it to swap it out.
