00:03 <Alice> I don't get that.  I occasionally have bad breathing problems.  Like, coughing fits, bubbling in my chest and throat, the sensation of my throat closing up.  I put a mask on, I'm fine.  The biggest problem I have is that it warms up the interior of my nose, which seems to induce mucus production among other issues.  Otherwise, I can breathe just fine.

00:04 <Alice> I'm starting to wonder if it's the brand and production of the mask causing problems for others.  Think allergies or fibers getting loose and being breathed in.

00:05 <Alice> But if that were happening, then it's not a mask that would be used in medical circles.

00:05 <Alice> Also, what did Gilead do, Schism?

00:06 <Schism> Decided that the price of their COVID-19 medication, Remdesivir, should be between $2,300 and $3,100 per patient.

00:17 <Ali> ...

00:17 <Ali> Can we burn them to the ground the greedy jerks

00:17 <Schism> And salt and lime the ashes.

00:18 <Schism> I suppose there's sufficient cause, now, that no jury in the godsdamned world would convict us.

00:19 <Ali> I mean putting a price on the cure of covid that high...

00:20 <Ali> That is worst than the $500 a vial I heard months ago

00:22 <Schism> I apologize for the mix-up, by the way.  Turing Pharmaceuticals, around the time of Martin Shkreli's resignation (and subsequent arrest), was known for increasing Daraprim by 5,500%.   They've since changed their name, but Daraprim took until this February to get a generic.

00:26 <Schism> Daraprim is known as being both an anti-malarial and an AIDS treatment.

00:29 <Alice> And here's where my ability to put aside morality and ethics aside makes me a monster.  From a business perspective, I see nothing wrong with what Gilead is doing.  They are not obligated, from a business standpoint, to make their products accessible to the entire population.  Ethically, and morally?  Yes, they would be required because abusing a pandemic to profit is morally and ethically objectionable.  But from a legal standpoint,

00:30 <Schism> Alice, I understand the difference between a moral obligation and a fiduciary obligation.  And a legal one.  Knowing the difference between lawful and good doesn't make you a monster.

00:31 <Alice> The core purpose of a business is to make money.  Secondary to that are to appease the shareholders.

00:31 <Alice> As such, from a standpoint where I put aside ethics and morality, I see a company simply doing business.  Even if I don't agree with it.

00:31 <Schism> All I'll say is that if your corporate charter puts 'making money' above 'being a reasonable human being', your corporation should be dissolved and the charter dropped in aqua regia.

00:32 <Schism> And if there aren't any laws on the books about that, there damn well should be.

00:33 <Alice> Oh, I agree.  But there is no way around that mentality.  It isn't an aspect of capitalism per se, but rather, of human behavior.

00:33 <Alice> There are a number of problems that have to be dealt with before we can change the system.

00:34 <Schism> One could state that the purpose of laws is to curtail the more recondite aspects of human behaviour.

00:35 <Alice> Good luck.

00:37 <Alice> The core problem that needs to be curtailed, would be the expectation of A in return for providing B.

00:38 <Alice> And don't counter with the concept of "for the greater good"

00:39 <Alice> The reality of that is that an individual is providing B with the expectation that the global effect will directly or indirectly affect them at a later date or time.  Even if it is not expressly stated or seen that way by the individual.

00:39 <Schism> I know what you mean.

00:40 <Schism> And yes -- the capitalistic assumption that one must always receive some return on investment -- usually an immediate one, instead of a deferred one, or one which is already being paid, is a stick in my craw.

00:42 *** Joins: Fluttershy (Fluttershy@Pony-a6jb34.res.spectrum.com)

00:42 <Alice> And yet, it is a necessity.  Commissioned works come to mind.  You are taking time away from a person's life, which is the basic currency, even in the absence of an actual currency or need for monetary compensation.  That time is lost to the individual.  What are you going to give in return for the time they spend?

00:43 <Alice> Even if we are reduced to a society where money is no longer a thing, bills and such are no longer a thing...

00:44 <Schism> There must, I understand, always be some payment for a service provided.  However, where it gets complicated is that there are many different ways to define 'payment', as well as 'compensation'.

00:44 <Alice> To ask someone to do something for you, something that takes considerable time away from that person, they still deserve something in return for the work done.  Even if doing it for free would not impact their life.

00:44 <Schism> In the case of some drugs, for example -- I have it on good authority that Gilead have been subsidized by the governments.

00:45 <Schism> To the tune of billions of dollars.

00:46 <Schism> So, we're not looking at a case of a poor drug company spending tons of money on R&D and looking to recoup.  We're looking at a contractor who's already been paid.

00:46 <Alice> I understand that.  But clearly, there must be benefits to the government, even if the companies are evading taxation.

00:48 <Alice> Contrary to public belief, governments are smarter than they appear.  The problem lies in that we do not have access to everything going on in them.  Either because of red tape, legal reasons, or because there simply isn't any documentation involved.

00:48 <Schism> The purpose of a government has never been to collect money.  It has always been to secure the well-being of its citizens.  If collecting money for distribution is a part of that, then fine, but I have severe doubts that's what's going on here.

00:49 <Alice> Businesses aren't being taxed, but to get away with it, and get massive bailouts, there must be backroom and under-the-covers deals and agreements being made that benefit the government or people in the government.

00:49 <Schism> Oh, I know this.

00:50 <Schism> This is why when such deals come out, they're so widely publicized.  Not because they're rare, but because they're usually better-hidden.

00:50 <Schism> This girl wasn't born yesterday, Alice.  :P

00:51 <Alice> All it takes is, from the government's perspective, the wrong person to hear one small clue.

00:51 <Schism> And in one of those dark ironies, said publicizations result in the government being more circumspect the next time.

00:52 <Alice> To me, the disturbing aspect is the knowledge that, despite the fact that these few incidents are outed, they continue to do it anyways.  Which means the risk is outweighed by the benefits by a considerable amount.

00:52 <Schism> The question, then, is how punitive we need to make the punishment.

00:53 <Schism> Conviction for treason sounds like a good start.

00:54 * Schism sighs, then goes for her daily walk. "I'll catch you folks in an hourish."

00:54 <Alice> More to the question, how do you punish the entity responsible for the laws involved?  And who is to be held responsible?

00:54 <Schism> True...

00:54 <Alice> There are people who work for the entity that have no idea what is going on, because they do not benefit from knowing.  Are they complicit?

00:55 <Alice> Anyways, sorry for the dark discussion. :P

02:11 <Alice> https://www.reddit.com/r/funny/comments/i5m5wt/hand_sanitizer_found_at_my_chiropractors_office/

02:11 <Schism> Heee.

02:12 <Schism> Ali, do you have F1 2018 yet?

02:13 <Ali> No, nor do I have any of the F1 games

02:13 <Schism> https://www.humblebundle.com/store/f1-2018-free-game

02:13 <Ali> The problem with current racing sims is they're built for steering wheels

02:13 <Schism> Mmm...

02:13 <Ali> I got Project Cars 2 when it was in the Steam Sale

02:14 <Ali> Only to have to refund it cause the controls were pure crap incarnate

02:14 <Schism> Well, surely this will just be something to have for when and if you do get a steering wheel.

02:14 <Ali> I have Nascar 15 already

02:14 <Ali> And its unplayble due to the controller wagglings in the corners

02:15 <Ali> And the straights are bad too cause you have no straightaway speed due to said wagglings

02:15 <Schism> Ewww...

02:15 <Ali> So you're seconds slower than the AI due to this

02:15 <Ali> Even on tracks where you're always full throttle like Daytona or Talladega

02:15 * Alice checks the date.

02:16 <Ali> You just wiggle so hard in the corners that you're scrubbing off about 5-9MPH

02:16 <Alice> Ah, wait, appointment is August 18th, not August 8th.

02:16 <Alice> I'll be surprised if that appointment is even kept

02:16 <Ali> And steering wheels are not cheap at all

02:16 <Alice> Given all the trouble I had to go through just to get a proper prescription out of Booth Neurology.

02:16 <Ali> Seems like they're $400 or so

02:16 <Alice> Yeah, high-quality controllers for certain kinds of games..

02:16 <Alice> They're expensive.

02:17 <Alice> I wouldn't mind getting a HOTAS setup, though.

02:17 <Ali> So as much as I would like a racing game

02:17 <Alice> I'd be more inclined to play Elite Dangerous, then.

02:17 <Ali> controllers such as the Xbox are not ment to be used

02:17 <Alice> And X4.

02:17 <Ali> Unless they go back to the assists of Nascar 05

02:18 <Ali> But I don't think I have a GC controller than can put up with that much of abuse

02:18 <Ali> Cause I was doing 100% race lengths

02:18 <Ali> And yes this did include the longest race in NASCAR, the Coke 600

02:19 <Ali> Its...quite the challenge to sit there for 600 miles

02:20 <Alice> What's the main problem with using a controller in the games, out of curiousity?

02:23 *** Joins: Pony|21245 (Pony21245@Pony-i454b4.cable.virginm.net)

02:23 <Ali> When you turn into the corner, the car wiggles, scrubbing speed off.

02:23 <Ali> This isn't the loose/tight condition

02:23 <Schism> Controller jitter, and such.

02:24 <Ali> Is just that the car won't hug the inner lane

02:24 <Alice> Sounds like the dead zone is too small.

02:24 <Ali> Same thing down the backstreatch

02:24 <Ali> The car likes to lursh slightly left or right

02:24 <Ali> lurch*

02:24 <Alice> I had a similar problem with Ys 3 Memories of Celcetta.

02:24 <Ali> so when you pull it back, you lose a bit of speed

02:24 <Alice> The deadzone was too small, resulting in letting go of the stick, and Adol would face the opposite direction suddenly.

02:25 <Ali> I don't know if its a deadzone

02:25 <Alice> Because it picked up motion in the opposite direction just from the release of the stick.

02:25 <Ali> Or just the degree of slight left vs slightly more left isn't as distinguished

02:25 <Ali> Like how in Zelda

02:25 <Alice> Admittedly some games just use a binary state for left/right, etc.

02:26 <Ali> You can very slow walk, normal walk, and run

02:26 <Alice> I know what you're referring to.

02:26 <Schism> Games need to let you adjust the deadzone more often.

02:26 <Ali> So yeah, without that middleground, crossing that extreme makes racing games a lot harder than they should be

02:27 <Ali> And a lot of the popular small sized racing games, like Mario Kart and Sonic All Stars

02:27 <Schism> Ali: Twilight Princess makes it *really* hard to just walk instead of running full tilt, which also makes catching those damn bugs trickier.

02:27 <Ali> Have a drift feature to kind of make up for the crappy corning speeds

02:28 <Ali> So yeah, I tend to avoid racing games now cause without a steering wheel, they're a waste.

02:29 <Ali> That and I hate trigger acceleration

02:29 <Alice> As far as I know, when games don't support deadzone stuff, or expect a certain type of controller, you can usually "simulate" said controller with an external app, binding controls and adjusting the deadzone and how it reports stuff.

02:29 <Ali> My finger gives out in about 10 minutes

02:29 <Alice> This is what I did for the Ys games.

02:30 <Alice> Basically I used an application to control the deadzone and the ramping.

02:30 <Alice> It's one of those things I am considerate of for my own gamedev stuff, for the record.

02:30 <Ali> Also I'm annoyed a tiny bit that Retroarch won't let me configure the Z button for Zelda

02:30 <Ali> My mini map keeps going on and off when I target and that annoys me.

02:31 <Alice> I have an input system designed such that you can specify if the input should be treated as analog or digital(That is, ranging from 0.0 to 1.0, or simple on-off), and if it's an analog input desired to be treated as a digital input, what the deadzone switch is.

02:31 <Alice> So, for example, I can configure an analog input to trigger a digital binary input when the stick is tilted say, 25%.

02:32 * Lumindia_ yawns, drinks a cup of sleepytime tea before bed

02:32 * Lumindia_ pulls Alice, Ali, and Schism into a hug

02:33 <Alice> Or, if a digital input is configured to be used as an analog input, you can also specify the analog value to use, ranging from 0.0 to 1.0.  So a digital button could result in say, the act of tilting a joystick 50% of the way to the left.

02:33 <Alice> Truth told, this seems like a system I should extract from my engine, and turn into a stand-alone application.

02:33 <Alice> That is, it intercepts all controller inputs, and emits them through a virtual device.

02:34 * Lumindia_ dozes off

02:34 <Alice> And by virtual device, I mean a 100% configurable virtual device.  Not a standard device that's known.  You can configure it to have any number of buttons, analog and digital inputs, etc.

02:35 <Lumindia_> would it be limited to controller inputs, or could you theoretically map keyboard and mouse inputs as macro outputs?

02:36 <Alice> You can do that, yes.

02:36 <Lumindia_> ooo

02:36 <Lumindia_> and with that I depart

02:36 <Alice> Injecting inputs from the mouse and keyboard is viable.

02:36 <Lumindia_> tea has been consumed

02:37 <Alice> Hell, to be honest, it's probably kind of moot if you're using Steam.

02:37 <Lumindia_> sleep time

02:37 * Lumindia_ boops the snoots, then crawls into bed

02:37 <Alice> You can configure Steam these days to do exactly what I'm thinking of above.

02:37 <Alice> It's part of the Big Picture Mode stuff.

02:37 <Alice> People have created entire controller setups for games that are purely mouse and keyboard exclusive, like ARPG games.

02:37 <Lumindia_> I don't really use big picture, and with the exception of a select few 'chill' games,, I use KB+M for everything

02:38 <Lumindia_> like sidescrolling platformers

02:38 <Lumindia_> Playing those with a controller just feels more natural because that's how I grew up playing them

02:38 <Alice> Mmhmm.

02:38 <Alice> I have some use cases for the concept, myself.

02:39 <Alice> And, as stated, it requires Steam to work.

02:39 <Lumindia_> jergiogiore no bad yuujin, go to sleep

02:39 <Alice> Sorry.

02:40 <Alice> Hum.  One issue has arisen with the Android emulation approach.

02:41 <Alice> I need to simulate the presence of a LIFX Bulb access point, without the emulator using my wifi to try and connect to it.

02:46 <Alice> That would probably entail creating multiple virtual WLAN devices, with one being the hostapd/dhcp server and application, one being a virtual WLAN adapter, which is linked to the emulator, and allowing the two to see one another.

02:52 <Alice> Aaand that's possible because Linux devs are smart.

07:15 <ConfusionRift> You only work with one.

07:15 <Alice> Bleh, I shouldn't have done the voice chat.  Throat's feeling bad now.  Blaaaah.

07:25 <Alice> Is it Winter yet?

07:27 <ConfusionRift> Not in here, and unsure if the temp is gonna go down by then.

07:29 <Ali> Winter...yes winter...

07:31 <Alice> My bedroom basically becomes unlivable when I do gaming in it, and I want it to drop to Fall or Winter temperatures so I can get back to games.

07:38 <Ali> This is kinda why my PC room has a AC unit in it

07:39 <Ali> Though this house's ventalation is what I'd call piss poor

07:40 <Alice> Not that lucky.

07:40 * PrincessRainbows barks at Ali and chews on her hooves

07:40 <Ali> Like two rooms of the house can be hot, while another one cool

07:40 <Alice> Won't lie though, I would not mind buying a small A/C.  But I don't know my room's di- ... *Notices the measuring tape nearby*

07:40 <Ali> All on the second floor

07:43 <Alice> 13 feet by 9.5 feet.

07:43 <Alice> 123.5 square feet.

07:46 <ConfusionRift> I think a 5K BTU should do just fine. Besides, they're the cheapest.

07:48 <Alice> Yeah, some calculators suggest 5K.

07:48 <Alice> The catch,

07:49 <Alice> It can't be a window unit.

07:49 <ConfusionRift> Don't have an available window?

07:50 <Alice> Not one that will allow a unit to fit in it, no.

07:50 <Alice> The window in my bedroom is one of those door-like ones that opens on a hinge.

07:51 <ConfusionRift> That's an issue.

07:51 <ConfusionRift> There are portable units, but still require venting to the outside.

07:52 <Alice> That can be done, at least.

07:52 <Ali> Mine is a freestanding AC unit

07:52 <Ali> cause the HOA frowns hard on in window ACs

07:53 <Alice> Just need to replace the screen with a plastic sheet of appropriate size, and with a gap for the vents.

07:53 <ConfusionRift> Does it have a hose leading to a window?

07:53 <Ali> yeah, but that's it, nothing hangs out the window.

07:54 <ConfusionRift> That's the thing. It's one of those hinged windows, not a sliding one. So holding the vent in place might be problematic.

07:54 <ConfusionRift> Then again, one can do some... modifications to the venting.

07:55 <ConfusionRift> Oh, another thing. Portable ones, AKA standing units, are more expensive, even the 5k units.

07:57 <Alice> Actually, in this case, there's a simple solution.

07:57 <Ali> I don't know if I can call this thing 'portable'

07:57 <Ali> Its pretty large

07:57 <Alice> The window is... interestingly designed.

07:58 <Alice> The way it's designed, I could technically just take a properly sized piece of plexiglass or plastic sheeting, and replace the screen with that plastic.

07:58 <Alice> The screen's just a panel held in by four small clips that are rotated over on top of the panel.

07:59 <Alice> It's not held into a sliding mechanism or anything special.

07:59 <ConfusionRift> Ali: They are called portable because you can move it around from place to place, A window unit is meant to be more or less permanent.

07:59 <ConfusionRift> They're still big and heavy, of course.

08:00 <Alice> They're also cheaper, from the looks of things, the window units.

08:00 <Alice> The portable ones are freakishly expensive.

08:00 * ConfusionRift nods.

08:01 <ConfusionRift> The cheapest we've sold a 5K windows unit is $100. A portable one of the same is $200-$250.

08:02 <ConfusionRift> I should also point out some have dehumidifiers and integrated heaters.

08:02 <Alice> If you can even find a 5k unit.

08:02 <Alice> A majority of them seem designed for 400-500 or more square feet.  Far more than my bedroom.

08:02 <ConfusionRift> Yeah, heat has been a problem. 5k units are out, or have a price hike.

08:05 <Ali> I don't remember what unit thing is, or the cost.  Its several years old

08:05 <Alice> Annoyingly?

08:05 <Alice> My original window *WOULD* have accomodated a window unit.

08:05 <Alice> They replaced it with this stupid thing I have now.

08:06 <ConfusionRift> Aesthetics! :P

08:07 <Alice> Honestly?

08:07 <Alice> I'm inclined to say they did it to prevent window A/Cs.

08:11 * ConfusionRift shrugs.

08:13 <Alice> Basic logic being that A/C units in the windows most visible will hurt housing value.

08:13 <Alice> Therefore, replace all the windows under the auspices of efficiency with windows that don't allow them.

08:15 <Alice> Honestly, I wouldn't even be considering an A/C, if my bedroom weren't inexplicably designed to prevent airflow somehow.

08:15 <Alice> I stand out my bedroom, I can feel air flowing out from it.  But if I stand in front of my window, there's no airflow coming in.  Even when it's windy as all hell.

08:18 <ConfusionRift> Hmmm.

08:22 <Alice> So, there's a black and decker unit.  Amazon US has it at $350.

08:22 <Alice> Guess the Amazon Canada price.

08:22 <Ali> $425?

08:23 <Alice> $1,208.

08:23 <ConfusionRift> Hahahaaaa... nope!

08:24 <Ali> Yeah that's a nope

08:26 <ConfusionRift> Guh, units are expensive over there.

08:27 <Alice> Everything is.

08:28 <Alice> Usually due to import fees or arbitrary upcharging.

08:28 <Alice> I'm just gonna have to deal with the heat, I think.,

08:33 <Alice> But given that, while I know how to measure, I do not know how to cut various materials, nor weld, meld, or construct a case.

08:33 <Alice> I don't think I can do that.

08:33 * PrincessRainbows noms and climbs up on Ali

08:51 * PrincessRainbows hugs ConfusionRift and makes more incoherent filly noises

08:52 * ConfusionRift also make some incoherent noises, and boops PrincessRainbows. :P

09:01 <Tirek> Had a pokemon tabletop game yesterday. I grappled a beedril and survived.

09:04 <ConfusionRift> And suplex it, right? :P

09:05 <Alice> That only works on phantom trains.

09:06 * Ali sits on Tirek

09:12 <Tirek> Nah, I used the beedril as a body shield, and its cohorts - three sewaddle - tried to stringshot our party. I used the beedril to take that hit, then another party member dragon-raged the beedril dead.

09:12 <ConfusionRift> Hehehe.

09:13 <Tirek> After the beedril was taken care of, one of the sewaddle was knocked out, and then I captured the rest in my big, beefy smeargle arms.

09:13 <Tirek> Carried them out of the dungeon and threw them at our guildmaster.

09:33 <Alice> That said, throat's looking mighty fine, now.

09:37 <Alice> The Satisfactory devs tried to do a joke on Twitter.

09:37 <Alice> It didn't end well.

09:38 <Alice> The devs jokingly went "Let's make #CancelMichaelCarmody trending" as a joke, and people threw a FIT.

09:40 <Alice> People are way too high strung on social media.

09:42 <ConfusionRift> It's been like this for a while. Nothing is funny, all is criticism, and "my stance is better than yours". Getting kinda scary. Some people take it waaaay too seriously.

10:39 <Alice> Seriously though, the other day my brain just looked inward and started going "AAAAHHHHHHHhhhhhhhhhh!" and "*Mutter* *Mutter* *Mutter* *Mutter*" for most of the day.  For some reason, the shock hit me belatedly.

10:39 <Schism> Yup.  Well, you were coming up at the end of that cycle, too.

10:40 <Alice> Mmhmm.

10:40 <Schism> I can't help but suspect that was the point at which your mind decided to process everything at once.

10:40 <Alice> Still, a better end of the cycle than usual.

10:40 <Alice> It was, yes.

10:41 <Alice> I'm actually starting to think that what's happening with my cyclical stuff is that it's... just when my brain decides enough is enough, and needs to process all the stuff it's been trying to ignore for several weeks.

10:42 <Alice> That said, it didn't end as bad as it usually does.

10:42 <Alice> So either my brain just has less on it to worry about now, or I'm getting better at managing it.

10:44 <Schism> I'd say the latter...!

10:51 <Schism> Alice: I fail to see why you couldn't crumble some bacon onto said bagel.

11:00 <Alice> You taste like Bob.

11:00 <Alice> From Surgeon Simulator.

11:00 <Lumindia_> what does Bob taste like?

11:02 <Alice> Like unknown chemicals and blood.

11:02 <Alice> Because you inject him with all sorts of stuff haphazardly.

11:02 <ConfusionRift> Yep, now I remember why this game gave me such anxiety, especially on the hardest difficulty.

11:02 <Lumindia_> what game?

11:02 <ConfusionRift> Wiz 'n' Liz.

11:03 <Schism> Lumindia_, Alice has also been playing Surgeon Simulator 2.

11:03 <Alice> I got one of the closed beta keys a few days ago. o3o

11:04 <Schism> The first patient is a poor guy who had a heart attack and got into a car crash after being menaced by a loaf of bread.

11:05 <Lumindia_> ... well that's a callback

11:05 <Alice> Nah.  Lung transplant.

11:05 <Schism> Oh, okay.

11:05 <Lumindia_> I remember THAT game

11:05 <Alice> No, wait.

11:05 <Alice> Leg replacement.  Lung was second patient.

11:05 <Alice> Alas, the game's changed a bit.

11:06 <Alice> But it does have potential for interesting situations.

11:06 <Alice> You can move around the operating room and everything now.

11:06 <Alice> So you can move around, pick stuff up, use it to break open Bob's chest, etc.

11:06 <Alice> You can remove the legs, arms and head.

11:06 <Lumindia_> wait what purpose does that last one serve?

11:06 <Alice> You also need to use a device to scan Bob to figure out what needs replacing.

11:07 <Alice> Well, sometimes you need your head to be replaced, don't you?

11:08 <ConfusionRift> As I mentioned earlier, it feels more like they're turning it more into a puzzle style kind of game. It's no longer you in one room. You can have multiple rooms, in which they could serve no purpose, or you actually need to use them.

11:08 <Alice> Part of that is presumably for the multiplayer aspect.

11:08 <ConfusionRift> Oh, and your right arm doesn't work anymore. :P

11:08 <Alice> You don't have a right arm.

11:08 <Alice> Even in the original.

11:08 <Alice> It's only one arm that you use.

11:09 <Lumindia_> so it's less 'jank-ass controls and funny game' and more 'actual surgeon puzzle'?

11:09 <ConfusionRift> Oh... hmm, right.

11:09 <Alice> You're thinking of the multiplayer for the first game.

11:09 <Alice> Which allowed a player to play as another arm.

11:09 <Schism> Pff.  In Germany, a wild boar steals a nudist bather's laptop, he runs after it and catches it in the buff while others look on and capture pictures (to which he says 'publish away!').

11:09 <DerpyBot> New post on Equestria Daily by Calpain: Morning Discussion #2017 [ http://tinyurl.com/y4yjpqkh ]

11:09 <Alice> Lumindia_:  Sorta.  Still got jank-ass controls, but they added some Portal mixed into it, and multiplayer.

11:09 <ConfusionRift> Lumindia_: It's still janky, just in another way.

11:10 <Alice> But, again, it's a beta.  Early release game.  Like, really early.

11:10 <Alice> On the upside?

11:10 <Alice> Editor.  So, you can create your own operating situations.

11:10 <Lumindia_> ooo

11:10 <Lumindia_> that sounds like it has potential

11:10 <Alice> Mmmhmm.

11:11 <Alice> And the beta's content was reasonably complete and interesting.  Included power connections, logic gates, various sensors, timers, displays, etc.

11:11 <ConfusionRift> You still have a salami for an arm, and you still have to operate. Thing is... it doesn't feel as complex in terms of the operation. They added more complexity to everything else. As Alice said and I pointed previously, it feels like they're trying to merge Surgeon Simulator with Portal aspects.

11:12 <Alice> There's likely still content missing, as well.  It wouldn't surprise me if they added more complex surgery stuff later on.

11:12 <ConfusionRift> Oh goodness...

11:13 <Alice> Still, nothing like busting open a ribcage with a chair.

11:13 <Lumindia_> this beta sounds like it's a 'here's the new stuff that our engine can do' kind of thing

11:13 <Alice> More or less.

11:13 <Alice> I'm waiting to see if they extend the surgery stuff to complex machinery.

11:14 <Alice> Instead of just cutting body parts and breaking bones, you start cutting electrical wires, and throwing in PCBs or microchips into a computer and calling the job "done"

11:14 <Lumindia_> computer surgeon simulator when?

11:15 <ConfusionRift> But yeah, sometimes you got everything in one room, other times everything is scattered in multiple rooms, other times you need to use your wits get what you need and still have to keep the patient alive somehow.

11:15 <Lumindia_> where you discover 'uh oh, the PSU is fried, use surgeon simulator physics to replace it!'

11:15 <ConfusionRift> Now that's Trauma Center levels of hazard. :P

11:15 <Alice> Heh.

11:16 <ConfusionRift> On one of them, you had to defuse a bomb.

11:16 <Alice> Also, somehow you're strong enough to rip limbs and organs right out of Bob.  Don't advise it though.

11:16 <Schism> First one, mission 12 or something.

11:16 <Alice> If you do, it basically causes him to start bleeding out like mad.

11:16 <Alice> Apparently, using a saw or a scalpel makes it less damaging.

11:16 <ConfusionRift> I should point out you just ripped this guys arm with just one hand? :P

11:16 <Alice> Or an axe.

11:16 <Schism> ConfusionRift: Not as bad as THAT ONE FREAKING MISSION WITH 5 KYRIAKI PATIENTS ahem excuse me I'm slightly salty about that one still.

11:17 <ConfusionRift> Never played that one, but am aware of it.

11:17 <Alice> Or the time I removed and replaced the wrong body part, ConfusionRift?

11:17 <ConfusionRift> Leg Man? :P

11:18 <Alice> I spent all that time carefully removing the body part and injecting unknown chemicals into him, only to later find out I replaced the wrong limb.

11:18 <Schism> ConfusionRift: Beating the 5-Kyriaki mission in under 10 minutes gets you an automatic S-rank.

11:18 <Alice> Cue cursing and swearing, and laughter as I realize my mistake.

11:19 <ConfusionRift> Oh yeah, and the game trying to take you on a trip to Level 0. :P

11:21 <Alice> https://www.twitch.tv/videos/703900458?t=00h46m04s

11:21 * Filly_Nightmares yawnskrees and curls up on Alice

11:22 <Alice> Ah yes, the glitch.

11:23 <Alice> The worst part is, I even see the screen at one point and don't realize I cut off the WRONG PART.

11:28 <ConfusionRift> That whole thing was a trip. :P

11:30 <Alice> Long story short, don't ask me to do surgery for you.

11:31 <Alice> And for those wondering, yes, the game does allow arbitrary reconnecting of limbs.

11:31 * ConfusionRift slow nods.

11:31 <Alice> While playing in the editor, I detached the head and attached a leg in it's place, and attached the head in the place of a leg.

11:31 <ConfusionRift> LEG MAN!

11:33 <Alice> A leg for a head, a head for a leg, and an arm for an arm.

11:36 <Alice> Also, with respect to Portal..

11:36 <Alice> The game makes a reference to Half-Life 2.

11:37 <Lumindia_> didn't surgeon sim 1 have that "Meet the Medic" scene in it?

11:37 <Alice> Yes.

11:37 <Alice> As well as an alien, and, eventually Donald Trump, if I recall correctly.

11:39 <Lumindia_> '-'

11:40 <Alice> So yeah, I can see there being different individuals to perform surgery on later in SS2.  Just, only in the complete game.

11:41 <Lumindia_> guessing right now it's just 'generic patient model'?

11:45 <Alice> Basically.

11:46 <Alice> In fact, there was a lot of stuff implemented for the editor that, as far as I could tell, was unused for the story missions.

11:46 <Lumindia_> maybe they'll get used in the later missions?

11:48 <Alice> https://www.romper.com/p/trolls-world-tour-doll-pulled-from-stores-due-to-inappropriate-button-30953280 ...  I... what... How does this even-

11:52 <ConfusionRift> I... okay, the button in reference is on the bottom of the toy, NOT between their legs. Still, why have that button there?

11:53 <ConfusionRift> Actually, by the angle, it is in between. Then again, why even have that there? It can easily be elsewhere. I think people are still too touchy and aggressive.

11:55 <Alice> Mmm, well, the problem is that you put it anywhere near the butt, thighs, etc, it's going to cause trouble.

11:55 <Alice> It's one of those things though that should have made the designers go "Hmmm..."

11:58 <ConfusionRift> Okay, but design-wise. Like... is she supposed to react you putting her down on the table and that's why that's there? Oooor... well don't know where the mindset was on design, so... pfffttt...

11:59 <Alice> It was apparently supposed to be for when you sat her down.

12:00 <ConfusionRift> Maybe something like space heater switches. They have a killswitch at the button, so if they fall over, they automatically shut off. Suppose she cheers when you grab her from a table or flat surface.

12:10 <Schism> 'When OPP officers caught up with Selinevich she initially denied she had been drinking, despite the dozen empty beer cans in the car, an odour of alcohol emanating from the vehicle, and two passengers who appeared to be intoxicated. A breathalyzer test determined her blood alcohol level was more than 160 milligrams per 100 millilitres.'

12:13 <Schism> 'Two years less a day'?  Odd request by the prosecution.

12:54 <Alice> Nothing like a sudden episode of "Oh gods my entire body itches" to force a shower.

12:56 <Alice> https://i.imgur.com/IyINqM3.png Whelp, there goes one exploit.

12:57 <Alice> Basically, by bulding the line of belts next to a long cliff like that, when the cliff at the very end was destroyed, it caused the game to destroy the line of cliffs as well, because it couldn't find a new place to put an end piece.

12:58 <RazorSharpFang> That's interesting.

12:59 <Alice> End pieces are diagonally placed, and therefore wider.  This makes it impossible to place between belts constructed in that manner.

12:59 <RazorSharpFang> At least without destroying the belt, but also ensuring they aren't on top of each-other.

13:01 <Alice> Mmhmm.

13:01 <Alice> The best solution here would probably be to destroy the belts as well.

13:23 <RazorSharpFang> Have you heard about the scenario with Patreon?

13:23 <Schism> I hope everypone recognizes the song.  o3o;  Aaaaand no, what have they done now?

13:23 <RazorSharpFang> They're being buried in arbitration claims and may die from the legal costs involved.

13:24 <Schism> Oh, ... well.  Crudcakes.

13:24 <Schism> Not that I'm the biggest fan of theirs, but a lot of people rely on them to get by.

13:24 <RazorSharpFang> This originated because Patreon decided to ban people for posts made on non-Patreon platforms.

13:24 <Schism> thWHAT.

13:25 <RazorSharpFang> As it happens, quite a few of the people banned were artists who put "other" art on "other" platforms.

13:25 <Schism> You can just say Pixiv, we know the score.

13:25 <Schism> Or FA or whatever.

13:25 <RazorSharpFang> But yeah, it seems weird to be banned for posts on other websites???

13:28 <RazorSharpFang> Could you imagine being banned on facebook for a twitter post?

13:28 <Alice> This does not shock me.

13:29 <Alice> Mostly because it's not a new thing.

13:29 <RazorSharpFang> I'd rather it not be a thing.

13:29 <Alice> So would I.

13:29 <Alice> But it's not going to happen.

13:29 <RazorSharpFang> Well, there are lawsuits going on right now.

13:30 <Alice> In any case, this is just another nail in the coffin for Patreon.

13:52 <Alice> Shall I have unusual dreams again today?  Yesterday, they involved me, Schism, Ali, and Confusion taking part in some sort of advanced, VR variant of an L4D-style game, set in the far future.  Of note was that the game's "world" spanned multiple galaxies, each comprising of a number of stars, each comprising of a number of planets, upon which each had a single map to play.  The further out from the "inner galaxies" we traveled,

13:52 <Alice> the harder it got.

13:52 <Schism> That sounds like a really neat idea for a game.

13:52 <Alice> It ended with us using a combination of a tank, electromagnetism, and a massive ****-off crane to lift said tank into the air to counteract the primarily ground-based boss of one of the maps.

13:53 <Alice> Also at least one vehicle to distract the boss while we set the magnet-tank-crane thing up.

13:53 <Alice> Schism was dealing with the crane.  I was dealing with the magnetic solution for the tank-crane combo.  Confusion was the one running distraction.  Ali was readying the tank for boom boom.

13:55 <Alice> Unlike the L4D-style games(The L4D series, the Warhammer-themed games, and so on), each map had multiple paths to take that were all open in one way or another(Secret paths, hidden behind locked doors, trap-protected, etc.), and trap-filled along with enemy-filled.  It was...  Unusual.

13:56 <Alice> That the other three folks were people I knew made it weirder.  If it is a premonition of things to come, all I can really say is that we worked well.  Ali also seemed to have gotten over her shyness.

14:00 <Alice> Unfortunately, my appearance, as well as Schism's were unknown.  For some reason, while I knew who the relevant entity was, I could not make out their form.  A black fog obstructed my view.  Ali, the only thing I could recall was long hair.  Rifty, predictably, was a robot of some sort.

14:01 <Alice> We were all arseholes to one another, but in the silly way.  We worked well together, but some of us would wander off ahead, and see or bypass traps, but not mention it to the others.  We all did it to one another at some point.

14:01 <Alice> I didn't mention a pitfall trap to Rifty and Ali, that returned them to an earlier point in the relevant level.
