01:00 <Alice> We really, really need to make the Fn key a standard modifier key for keyboards.

01:26 <Ali> Why? Standard keyboards don't really need it.

01:28 <Alice> Laptops and small keyboards make use of it, but the problem isn't that the keyboards don't have it.

01:28 <Alice> or that they do have it.

01:28 <Alice> It's how Fn key status is reported to the OS for those particular cases.

01:29 <Alice> In many cases, there's a controller between the keyboard and the rest of the hardware, that translates Fn+<Key> into special codes.  And it only emits them if certain combinations are pressed.

01:29 <Alice> Say, for example, Fn+F1.  If there's no combination in the controller code for a given set of keys, it doesn't emit anything.

01:29 <Alice> This makes it impossible for me, as an example, to bind Fn+Left Arrow to Home, and Fn+Right Arrow to End.

01:30 <Ali> I mean I understand on laptops, but the standard keyboard not so much.

01:49 <DerpyBot> New post on Equestria Daily by Sethisto: Changeling Swarm Simulator [ http://tinyurl.com/yy2tmh54 ]

01:54 * Schism ends her shift. And melts.

01:57 <Alice> Welcome back to the land of the sane.

01:57 * Ali flops over Schism, thinks the definition of simulator is screwy in the mind of Seth.

01:58 <Alice> Oh?

01:58 <Schism> Well, you know.  There's the Deeeeeer simulator...

01:59 <Alice> So, my sister bought these cans of Campbells soup.  She gave them to us, because she thought they were tomato soups.

01:59 <Alice> See, the confusion arised because of the nature of the labeling on the can.

01:59 <Ali> When I think Changling Swarm sim, i thought it was a manage a changling hive, not a meme dance.

02:00 <Alice> Apparently, at some point recently, Campbells decided to do a historic throwback thing.

02:00 <Alice> As a result, the labeling looks like cans used by Andy Worhal's cans, or something.  ANyways..

02:00 <Alice> They have absolutely 0 indication as to what's in the cans.

02:00 <Alice> Aside from the ingredients list.

02:01 <Alice> I can't tell if it's tomato soup, cream of mushroom, cream of asparagus, etc.

02:01 <Alice> The ingredients list mushrooms, so I'm inclined to think cream of mushroom.

02:03 <Schism> Mmm... fish cakes.

02:05 * Schism offers some to Alice. Guaranteed not to contain any elder god.

02:06 * Alice noms.

02:06 * Alice doesn't care if it contains elder god.

02:07 * Alice does however, care about being clean. Goes off to shower.

02:07 <Ali> It feels so wierd to not have to worry about bug attacks and just build away.  Though managing power is a bit painful.

02:28 <Schism> Fishcakes containing elder god was the death of an intergalactic corporation... >.>

02:33 * Alice sighs. Tried a new technique for shaving chin, paid for it.

02:34 * Schism passes Alice a styptic pencil.

02:35 <Schism> (Also known as potassium aluminium sulfate.)

02:42 <Alice> Yeah, it's fine.  It's stopped bleeding.

02:44 <Ali> I feel strange having about 1k construction bots and working on a nuke plant already

02:45 * Alice sees a thread about the term "cis" on Twitter. Reads. Nopes the hell out.

02:51 <Schism> Oh jeez, the Maple Leafs scored 3 goals in 4 minutes?  @_@

02:53 <Schism> https://twitter.com/OMEGABLADEWORKS/status/1292460164348616707  <.<  Happier things to think about.

02:54 <Alice> Ah, a caracal.

02:54 <Alice> Yeah, they don't meow, so much as screech.

02:58 <Ali> Lilly just kinda squeaks

02:58 <Ali> Thus we call her Squeakers every so often

03:03 <Ali> But why does her breed squeak instead of meow?  She seems siamese mixed

03:08 <Alice> It's hard to say.

03:08 <Alice> It could just be the cat itself.

03:08 <Alice> I mean, for nearly half his life, Simba never once meowed.

03:08 <Schism> For no reason, Ali: https://twitter.com/raityu/status/1279583021381767169

03:13 * Schism reads Calaeriel's statement about what landed her in the mental health facility. And... "Yeesh. This is a hard read. It all makes sense, and it's clear that she loves and supports Mae in everything. But whoof."

03:15 <Alice> Pass me the link, I want to read.

03:15 <Alice> I'm kind of curious as to why they went through that much trouble, because even I didn't end up in one for several days.

03:15 <Alice> Few hours, tops.

03:15 <Schism> https://www.facebook.com/508039814/posts/10161821974539815/?d=n

03:16 <Schism> It's some serious 'One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest' stuff.

03:18 <Alice> Ah, okay.  Yeeeah I can see why there were multiple days involved, now.

03:18 <Alice> Her episode was basically a much worse variant of mine.

03:19 <Alice> ...

03:19 <Alice> And that doctor, man.

03:19 <Schism> Yeah.

03:19 <Alice> That's a rude thing to say.

03:19 <Alice> Yeah, it just bubbled out of control, sounds like.

03:19 <Schism> Worse, if the patient is already in an incredibly, intensely stressful state, you don't laugh derisively.

03:19 <Alice> Like, really badly.  Everything came crashing down and basically induced what amounts to an extreme mid-life crisis.

03:19 <Schism> Yeup.

03:20 <Alice> In my case, what usually lands me in the hospital is simply that I rage.  I rage hard.

03:20 <Alice> And then kinda just have a mental collapse.

03:20 <Alice> Then my brain reboots, and it's like nothing ever happened.

03:20 <Alice> In a way, it's starting to sound like that raging and mental collapse is actually what's keeping me from going too far.

03:21 <Schism> Getting those stresses out, yea.

03:21 <Alice> Otherwise, the discussion she had with a psychiatrist, including the excrutiating wait, sounds about right.

03:22 <Alice> That sounds like a standardized questionaire, in fact.

03:22 <Alice> Because it's the exact questions I get asked every time.

03:22 <Alice> My answers are usually 1)  My outburst including all the violent behavior, depressive behavior and the like.  2)  No.  3)  Yes.  4) Yes.  5)  Yes.

03:23 <Alice> You'd think the last 3 would qualify me for longer-term observation, though.  Especially #5.

03:23 <Schism> Different countries, different methods.

03:25 <Alice> Indeed.

03:25 <Alice> But the questionaire is identical.

03:25 <Schism> Not too surprising.

03:25 <Alice> It's worth noting that it's not exactly strictly business with the questionaire, though.

03:25 <Alice> As you answer the questions, they usually follow up with discussion or conversation about something you might have said.

03:26 * Alice is hesitant to read more. Is already... distressed by it, because it's causing her to recall the various times she's been locked up.

03:26 <Schism> Indeed.  In this case, it sounds like they didn't even bother to try that with Liz.

03:27 * Schism hugs. "It's undoubtedly triggering. You don't have to read all the way through."

03:27 <Alice> I mean sure, it was never as bad as her case, but thinking back to it is both embarassing and stressful.  Because of the "I can't believe that happened to me" factor.

03:27 <Alice> Along with a "How did I let myself get that bad?" and other such questions.

03:28 <Alice> Just reminds me of how out of control I feel over it all.

03:28 <Alice> When my temper flares, I feel like I'm backseat driving, and being ignored.

03:30 <Schism> Ah, yea.  I don't fugue quite like that, but...

03:30 <Alice> And the entire time, I hear a voice trying to tell me to calm down, stop, slow down and such.  And it's like...  I'm trying, but nothing's working.

03:30 <Alice> All I can do is sit it out and let my mind do it's thing, and deal with the consequences after.

03:31 <Alice> Which is incredibly stressful because I often end up saying things I do not actually mean, or want to say.

03:32 * Schism nods. "When in a state like that, I think we all do."

03:32 *** Joins: Dranae (Scootaloo@I.Will.Fly.Higher)

03:33 <Alice> Sometimes I wonder if there's actually a third entity in my mind.

03:33 * Schism has all manner of characters in hers. It's disconcerting.

03:34 <Alice> As I just stated above, and then analysing what I had just said, it's like there's actually me, a person behind me trying to calm me down, and then a person in front of me that's ignoring everything and just kinda being a gigantic asshole, or at least doing what it thinks is the right thing in a fight-or-flight situation.

03:35 <Schism> That third one, I think we all have at times -- when the stress gets too much and we just suddenly start feeling like throwing things.  Typically out a window.

03:37 <Alice> And yet, mine is not the same as others.  While I am sure it happens, and I'm just not witness to it, I generally don't see people spontaneously raging, slinging insults, and punching stuff, inanimate or not.

03:37 <Alice> Thus far, the only times I've ever seen the police on university campus is when it involves me.

03:39 * Ali glares at a 47M coal patch. "I /think/ I might have overdone it on the density of these resources."

03:40 *** Quits: Dranae (Scootaloo@I.Will.Fly.Higher) (Ping timeout: 121 seconds)

03:40 <Alice> Possibly.

03:41 * Alice goes to check temp and take some tylenol.

03:43 <Alice> 99.3F.  Normal.

03:43 <Ali> Mine tends to be in the 97s

03:44 <Alice> I tend to be about middling 99s.  Should be 98.6, which is what's the norm for this region, based on my family and people around me.  Buuuuut...

03:44 <Alice> Chronic infections, plus, apparently I have a medical history of running a little hotter than usual.

03:45 <Ali> I seem to be cooler for some reason

03:45 <Alice> 98.6 is just the average.  It's possible, based on environmental factors, such as height from sea level, air pressure, air quality and other factors that can change what is the "norm" for that region.

03:48 <Alice> In any case, I have some supicions as to the cause of the fever, headaches and such now, so..  All I need to do is try to follow through in fixing it again.

03:48 <Alice> Gonna see what kinds of places are authorized to do immunotherapy shots, see if I can find a place closer to home that I can just walk or bike to.

03:49 <Alice> That's what made it hard to keep doing the shots the last time.  The place I had to visit was in a hard-to-reach part of town, even by bus and train.

03:50 <Alice> Sounds like a Rexall might be able to do it.

03:51 * Schism mms. "That seems likely."

03:52 <Alice> Asked their Twitter.  We'll see.  If it is, that'd be my best bet.

03:52 <Alice> There's one 15 minutes walking distance from my place.

03:52 <Alice> I'd be able to go, get the shot, sit around for 30 minutes just to be safe, then walk home.

03:52 <Alice> As compared to spending an hour and a half on a bus and at bus stations or train stations, just to get out to a place, and then back.

03:53 <Alice> Twitter, I know you shadowban people from being searched, but would it kill you to ignore the shadowban for people I follow?

03:53 <Alice> I know parts of the names they go by, but not their handles, and searching for them should bring them up, but...

03:53 <Alice> You just ignore it because they're shadowbanned or something.

03:54 <Schism> Sheesh...

03:54 <Schism> But if they made any exceptions, why, they'd have to stop the practice altogether!

03:54 <Alice> I'm honestly shocked I'm not shadowbanned, myself.

03:54 * Schism gains half an RDM level in a few short minutes.

03:54 <Alice> I've made some... interesting statements, especially against known investors of Twitter. >.>

03:56 <Alice> Meanwhile..

03:56 <Alice> Your account suffers the same problem, Schism.

03:57 <Schism> What, shadowbanned?  Pff.

03:57 <Alice> The only time yours shows up is when I put in the full handle.

03:58 <Alice> Even Pas comes up after only 2 letters.

03:59 <Schism> Weird.  Might be that I have a trans flag in my profile now.

03:59 <Schism> Or that the handle starts with "The".  :P

03:59 <Alice> I wonder if it's actually dependent on the number of tweets liked.  But if that were the case, you'd still be showing up higher than a majority of the people being listed, who are accounts I don't follow or don't recognize one bit.

04:00 <Schism> Engagement-over-time?

04:00 <Alice> I don't know any of these people.

04:01 <Alice> And you are the only person in the list of all the names that show up, that I follow.

04:02 <Schism> Meh.  If it means I'm not going to get harassed by random searchers, I'm fine.

04:02 <Alice> Heh.

04:04 <Alice> I just dislike it because my account's following list is getting a tad large.

04:04 <Alice> And occasionally I'd like to check out certain artists directly.

04:05 <Schism> Could make an art-following account.

04:06 <Alice> That's effectively what this account IS.

04:06 <Alice> Almost 90% of the accounts I follow are of different artists.

04:06 <Alice> At this point, I'd be better off making a separate account that's meant for casual conversation instead.

04:07 * Alice looks at bank account. "Hmm."

04:09 <Alice> ...

04:09 * Schism derps about, and decides to tank the MSQ Roulette.

04:09 <Alice> Okay, I was worried about that.

04:10 <Schism> Za?

04:10 <Alice> So, I've not been hearing the fans on my laptop kick on.

04:10 <Schism> Oh, they did now?

04:10 <Alice> I thought maybe it was just extremely aggressive quietness.

04:10 <Alice> Turns out it's not.

04:10 <Schism> ... o.o

04:10 <Alice> For some reason, the fans simply aren't being used.

04:10 <Alice> The CPU temperature spiked to 95C.

04:11 <Schism> Oh jeez.

04:12 <Ali> That's quite a random spike

04:15 <Alice> It was because I was doing something that used the CPU at max power.

04:15 <Schism> But why did the fans not kick in...

04:15 * Finwe noms on Ali's tail.

04:15 <Finwe> Breakfast tiem? :3

04:16 * Ali whines at Finwe and then doffs over them.

04:17 <Alice> Yep.  The fans just don't seem to be kicking in.  Hmm.

04:18 <Ali> So either a faulty fan or the cable disconnected?

04:19 <Alice> ... I don't think the sensors are returning the correct CPU temperature.

04:20 <Alice> I have the fans at top speed manually, and the temperature is still reporting hitting 100.

04:20 <Schism> BIOS check time?

04:20 <Alice> Which tells me I need an offset.

04:20 <Alice> The fans are running.

04:20 <Alice> I confirmed it.  I can hear them.  Much quieter than my old laptop by the by.

04:20 <Alice> Don't have that high-pitched underlying tone.

04:21 <Alice> But yes, going to the BIOS might not be a bad idea for getting an offset.

04:22 <Finwe> Good morning, my perissodactyls of minute stature.

04:23 <Alice> If it were really running as hot as advertised, my laptop would be shutting down, as the critical limit for lm_sensors is set to 100C.

04:23 <Alice> Anyways, BRB.

04:26 <Alice> Hum.  UEFI doesn't show anything.  Okay then, diagnostics.

04:27 * Finwe noms on Alice's UEFI.

04:27 <Alice> Okay yeah.  Definitely an offset needed.  This thing is getting very hot before the fans kick in.

04:27 <Alice> The reported temperature in the OS is not correct.

04:31 <Finwe> There's this handy piece of software called sensors.

04:31 <Alice> That's what I am using.

04:31 <Finwe> Or istats for MacOS.

04:31 <Alice> It seems to be indicating however, that my CPU is going into the hundreds range of temperature.

04:32 * Finwe probes his system.

04:33 <Finwe> CPU 36.56°C, TCAG Unknown Temp 80.0°C.

04:33 <Finwe> Hmm, I wonder what TCAG Unknown Temp is.

04:34 <Finwe> Memory is what usually gets rather hot.

04:36 <Finwe> The Apple-approved memory banks have loads of heat sinks.

04:37 <Finwe> Like this: https://i.pinimg.com/474x/12/e9/1e/12e91e84f7021045737d0308440917e4.jpg

05:00 <Alice> Yep, reports indicate that this is normal.

05:02 <Schism> 12,000 more MGP there...

05:04 <Alice> Okay, I'm wrong about the fans.

05:04 <Alice> They're kicking in.  They're just quiet.

05:05 <Alice> And it takes them a while to kick in, apparently.

05:07 *** Quits: cabbage (cabbage@Pony-c37bqa.dynamic.sonic.net) (Connection closed)

05:08 <Alice> And apparently it's a known problem, as even under Windows, the temperatures hit insanely high temps.  But if it were truly overheating that badly, the CPU would just shut down.

05:10 <Alice> Ah well, I got coverage on it.  Should it mysteriously burn itself out, it can be completely replaced.  o3o

05:11 <Alice> ... By my dad, no less.

05:18 <Ali> Hmmm, interesting thruput issues

05:19 <Ali> Two copper lanes are full, but its backing up, except at the end where the high demand is, the yellow balancers just can't balance the lane fast enough.

05:19 <Alice> Mmhmm, and likely the belts also can't keep up.

05:19 <Ali> Well the end belts yes

05:19 <Ali> The rest of the bus seems full

05:20 <Alice> Yellow belts max out at 15 items per second.  If you're consuming more than that per second on the belt by the time you reach the end of the manufacturing line, it won't be able to feed all the assemblers.

05:20 <Alice> But yes, splitters also affect performance.

05:20 <Ali> Just odd to see that sometimes

05:20 <Ali> And my steel lane is bare, I've rarely ever seen that happen

05:21 * Alice sets up cpupower to set the maximum CPU speed to 1.7GHz on startup. This'll keep the temperature down, and is sufficient for her needs anyways. If she needs more power, she can just manually configure it to go to maximum.

05:21 <Ali> Its nice to not have to worry about the stink cloud, but it does make the game a little boring

05:22 <Ali> But it gives me the chance to just watch the machines work and figure out some issues without the worry of are the turrets fed or if a wall is falling cause one random biter decided to nom on it

05:24 <Alice> Mmhmm.

05:24 <Alice> So, after setting the range the CPU can go from 1.10 to 1.70GHz, max temp is...  More sane.

05:25 <Alice> 65C.

05:25 <Alice> I may even enable software fan control to override the BIOS fan settings, since I can't seem to control that.

05:25 <Alice> Unfortunately, it seems manual control only provides 3 settings.  Off, Low, High.

05:28 <Alice> That said, that seems to be the behaviour of even BIOS control anyways, so..

05:28 <Ali> Set to off to screw your PC over setting.  Why is that there?

05:29 <Alice> Because amazingly, it is possible to run CPUs at low speeds without the need for a fan.

05:29 <Ali> Yes low CPU is ok

05:29 <Ali> But if it suddenly spikes to 90 or so and you have the fan off

05:30 <Alice> Fans can kick on pretty quickly.

05:30 <Schism> mutter...

05:30 * Schism is annoyed by Zurvan.

05:32 * Ali huggles on the Schism

05:32 <Alice> Zurvan?

05:33 <Schism> One of the Warring Triad series of bosses from FFXIV.

05:35 <Schism> Folks at that stage have been playing the game long enough to know, "Stand in the freaking meteors" is not an optional thing.

05:37 <Ali> You can never expect someone in a raid to NOT understand the boss gimmicks

05:38 <Ali> Reminds me of the idiots that wouldn't move during WoW's easiest loot boss

05:38 <Ali> There was a reason he was nicknamed LootReaver

05:38 <Schism> 50 DKP minus.

05:38 <Ali> But if you didn't evade his VERY OBVIOUS raid attack

05:38 <Ali> MORE WHELPS

05:39 <Ali> Stand in fires

05:39 <Ali> Move during Flame Wreath

05:39 <Ali> I shalt not move when the flame wreath is cast or the raid burns down

05:40 <Finwe> In Leeroy Jenkins we trust.

05:40 <Schism> There's something like that in many raids, where dice will appear over players' heads and count down.  If you don't stop moving, attacking, etc., congratulations, you get a Vulnerability Up stack.

05:41 <Ali> No this was worse Schism

05:41 <Ali> There was a boss in Kharazhan

05:41 <Ali> That when he cast Flame Wreath on the raid, you CAN NOT MOVE, or he hits everyone for massive damage, usually leading in a wipe.

05:42 <Alice> Schism:  In their defense, up to that point, you do encounter a raid battle in which standing in the freakin' meteors is a requirement.

05:42 <Ali> Man...I miss Khara

05:42 <Ali> Such a fun little raid, too bad its a Lvl 70 raid

05:42 <Ali> And the new one was like 110 I think?  I couldn't do it cause of well...Pugs suck.

05:43 <Alice> I personally want to do C'thun myself.

05:43 <Schism> I swear you do... oh well.

05:43 * Ali blehs, now she misses WoW...

05:43 <Schism> Aw, sonofa crabcake.

05:43 * Ali headtilts at Schism

05:44 <Schism> No wonder my heals were for crap!

05:44 <Alice> Not using most recent gear.

05:44 <Schism> Almost using most recent gear.  Except for the weapon, which was from 10 levels ago.

05:44 <Ali> WHOOPS

05:44 <Alice> So, hilariously, by limiting my CPU's power to it's "official", non-turbo-boost speeds, I should in theory get even MORE battery life out of it.

05:45 * Schism fixes her gear right now.

05:45 <Schism> Theeeeere.

05:46 <Alice> Current estimates suggest at 5% display brightness, I'll get 20 hours.  o3o;

05:46 <Schism> Not bad at all.  o3o~

05:47 <Alice> I also don't mind limiting the CPU power.  Even at stock max speed without turbo boost, it's still better than my old laptop.

05:48 <Alice> I'll have to tweak it though.  I'd prefer temperature not go above 85C.  So I'll have to load the CPU and figure out what frequency that amounts to.

05:51 * Schism considers doing a few FATEs. "They're slow as a healer, but... maybe as a PLD..."

05:51 * Alice does a kernel build, 12 threads.

05:57 <Alice> Under full load, it looks like I can get around 80C with 2.8GHz.

06:14 <Ali> But the device you run the 2nd one is bricked due to apple being apple

06:14 <Ali> How do you get your account freed from the second lock then?

06:15 <Alice> My experience is that you contact the company and request they remove the key.  They will ask for certain details, among other things, and then remove the 2FA key from the account.

06:16 <Alice> Source:  I've had to do this with my FF14 account three times.  After the third time, I just opted to get a fob for the damned thing.

06:16 <Schism> And a lovely keychain fob it is.

06:17 * Alice is happy now. Laptop won't friggen burn a hole through materials as if it were thermite, when the CPU is loaded.

06:17 <Ali> I do wonder one thing

06:17 <Alice> 'Course, I can't get max performance, but... eehhhhh...  If I need max performance, I can just boost it up myself.

06:17 <Ali> For a device that can sit on your lap

06:17 <Ali> WHY is the cooling fan blowing right ONTO said lap

06:18 <Alice> Because they aren't meant to be sitting on a lap, despite their name.

06:19 <Alice> Officially, you should be putting them on a flat surface so they can vent properly.

06:19 <Alice> That said, most people ignore this.

06:19 <Alice> Best way to get this while still using it as a laptop is to buy one of them portable laptop trays.

06:23 <Alice> In any case, as far as I can tell, the CPU in this laptop is meant to max out temp.  It's got stuff that causes it to throttle the power to the CPU so as to avoid going over 100C.  If it somehow does, and reaches 110C, it shuts itself off.

06:23 <Ali> Thanks ipad for that push notification of a severe thunderstorm warning when there's nothing around.

06:24 <Alice> Thing about thunderstorms.

06:24 <Alice> They can just pop up.

06:24 <Ali> I just looked at the radar

06:24 <Alice> I've literally had storm cells just manifest directly over my house.  No indication of one approaching.  Just, not there one moment, then there the next.

06:24 <Alice> Yeah, I know.

06:24 <Ali> There's not a cell nearby

06:24 <Alice> And, like I just said.

06:24 <Alice> A cell can spontaneously manifest.

06:24 <Alice> I've seen it happen in person.

06:25 <Alice> Literally nothing on the radar all around one moment.  Next moment, torrential downpour and lightning.

06:25 <Ali> Yes I understand pop up thunderstorms dear

06:25 <Ali> But the closest cell is 20+ miles north

06:26 <Ali> And the NWS has no active warnings in the area.  Must be an ipad glitch for it being offline for a few months.

06:38 <Alice> It's not like they are looking in my mouth when they do the test anyways.  Just a bunch of drawing on my arm, application of allergens suspended in a fluid, and then stabbing me with a needle multiple times.

06:39 <Alice> ... Not really, on that last one.

06:39 <Alice> It's more along the line of "Take a needle or pin and just scratch the surface."

07:03 <Alice> Turns out Dell configures their laptops to just go wild with the temperature.

07:03 <ConfusionRift> Dell...

07:03 <Alice> Under sufficient load, this thing will run at 100C for several seconds before the fans even kick in.  I had to do a bunch of manual configuration through software apps to stop this.

07:04 <Alice> From what I understand, this is normal behavior, and the CPU handles it just fine, it's just...  Yeeeaaaah..

07:04 <Alice> So, I configured it to max-clock up to 2.8GHz, and use the danged fans sooner.

07:04 <Alice> With the ability to just let loose whenever I need it.

07:09 <Alice> Basically akin to underclocking the CPU, but it results in better long-term throughput, because the default configuration apparently ends up thermal throttling pretty quickly.

07:15 <ConfusionRift> Makes sense. I mean, Dell was never that good at being thoughtful.

07:19 <Ali> And it wasn't apple that much I do know.

07:19 <Alice> Interestingly, everything about the laptop is entirely within spec.

07:19 <Alice> As in, the CPU isn't overclocked, or anything.

07:20 <Alice> It's just the cooling solution isn't the greatest.  System won't overheat and break down, but it will get hot, and it WILL get throttled.

07:20 <Alice> In any case, if it does go up in flames and melt, it's moot.  Got full-service.  I could practically throw it in the pool and Dell will repair it.  And given my dad's a technician who works for Dell, well... >.>;

07:21 <ConfusionRift> They always lack in some regard. Few of the things they love to do is underclock their systems, and skip on the cooling.

07:22 <Alice> In this case, they didn't do that.  They just let the CPU do it's thing, and skipped on the cooling.  In any case, again, it's moot.  Through the magic of overriding the BIOS and using software, I got it under control.

07:22 <Alice> And despite the underclocking, it's STILL more powerful than my old laptop.

11:12 <Alice> You know what would be fun to toy around with?  NES with no sprite limits, and, as a result of that, no flickering or slowdown.

11:39 <ConfusionRift> Note to self: Do NOT use the Prawn inside an alien base.

11:39 <Alice> Heh.

11:41 <Alice> As for the feasibility of my aforementioned idea... It's possible, but it'd require tweaks.  The CPU would have to be upgraded to support much more memory, new instructions would be needed to address said memory, and the system memory map would have to chain, in order to maintain compatibility with the original NES.

11:42 <Finwe> Two eggs mayonnaise, a prawn Göbbels, a Herman Göring and four Colditz salads.

11:42 * Finwe noms on ConfusionRift's prawn.

11:42 <Finwe> o7

11:45 * Filly_Nightmares melts and climbs onto Alice

11:46 * Alice pet pets.

11:48 <ConfusionRift> Okay, so... are you thinking on making a better NES, or work a way to remove the old sprite rendering limits? If it's the better NES, it's been done. Most of the times, the lag and rendering issues are self-contained problems in the game. Also, some games are meant to run at specific rates. Anything outside of that, it becomes unplayable.

11:49 * Filly_Nightmares pants at ConfusionRift

11:49 <Alice> Simply removing the sprite rendering limits, in this case.

11:49 <ConfusionRift> RAdm. Finwe. (salutes)

11:50 <ConfusionRift> What I'm afraid is of the game dumping pre-rendered garbage data into a larger space in memory.

11:51 <Alice> The two biggest causes of the sprite limit are the PPU simply being limited by how many sprites it can handle per scanline, and the OAM memory limit.

11:52 <Alice> The former can be fixed in emulation simply by not caring about the limitation.  The latter's a bit trickier as it'd require some changes.

11:56 <Alice> It depends on the solution chosen.  For an emulator-based approach, we can just add banking.  Add a register to the memory map somewhere, which selects an OAM bank.  For a hardware approach, we'd need to redesign the CPU.  Expand memory capacity, add new instructions for addressing expanded memory, and then some memory mapping adjustments that I don't know the terms for.

11:56 * Lumindia_ pets Alice muchly

12:00 <Finwe> Muchly and manily.

12:02 <Alice> At which point, why even bother?  Probably would just be easier to implement a 2D rendering engine with the same resolution and limitations as the NES, sans the sprite limits.

21:55 <Alice> Overwhelming, uncontrollable sensation, like my mind is going into overdrive.

21:55 <Schism> Oh, that.  @_@  Yeah.

21:55 * Schism hugs Alice. "Get a cup of coffee?"

21:55 <Alice> The last thing I need to learn to control.

21:59 <Alice> Hmm.  That's, actually an interesting problem.

22:01 * Alice would need to dump the laptop's UEFI/BIOS, and decompile it in order to figure out how the fans are communicated with.

22:02 <Alice> Alternatively, decompress/decompile the downloadable UEFI image from Dell.  Only issue there is that Dell intentionally wraps the images in an executable of some sort.

22:03 <Alice> Which, annoyingly, is an executable file.  It's not runnable under Linux.  It can be used by the UEFI/BIOS updater, but then I don't get access to what I need.

22:07 <Alice> Man, I really think I should spin my own hex editor, 'cause this is getting annoying.  These hex editors for Linux are garbage.

22:28 * Lumindia boops Schism's snootle

22:28 <Lumindia> o vo

22:31 * Schism squeaks. And then grumbles. "It's back to work for me."

22:51 <Ali> Well about to get squall lined here in the next hour or so..

23:28 *** Dranae is now known as Angeline

23:31 * Ali grabs the Angeline to hide from storms

23:33 <Alice> Hum.

23:34 <Alice> Sprite analysis of comparing sprites to artwork, it seems Capcom/Inti use some extreme simplification with respect to the legs and arms.  Especially in the Zero/ZX games.

23:36 <Ali> Are the things mirrored in places?

23:37 <Alice> Yeah, they do the mirroring.  It's not unexpected, though.  It's a common space saving technique.

23:37 <Ali> I'm about to get slammed by a storm here in a bit

23:37 <Ali> Yeah I know, I watched a lot of vids on how they managed to do the NES games

23:37 <Ali> There's a lot of mirroring and the like to save as many bytes as they could

23:38 <Alice> Mmhmm.

23:38 <Alice> And for the GBA Zero games, it was done as well.  ZX... Not sure, given that it was DS, so capacity was a bit better.

23:39 <Alice> Sprite sheets online suggest no.

23:41 <Ali> I find it interesting that it was easier to recolor a sprite than to make a new one

23:41 <Alice> Palette swapping is pretty straightforward, yeah.

23:43 <Alice> Usually, it involves creating either a grayscale sprite, with N shades.  Usually 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, and so on and so on possible shades.

23:43 <Ali> Hmm, not good, there's a vortex indicator showing up on radar, but the news isn't breaking in

23:44 <Alice> A palette is usually a collection of colours, often loaded into memory, a set of registers, or something else, which is referenced by the rendering hardware.  Swapping out colours is as simple as overwriting that collection of colours, which is faster than say, loading an entirely new sprite.

23:44 <Alice> Modern GPUs can actually pull this off, now.

23:44 <Alice> Requires a bit more work than usual, though.

23:45 <Ali> I went outside to take something down that I was worried might be torn off if the winds do get too high

23:45 <Alice> I've made such engines in the past.  Fun.

23:45 <Alice> Oh?

23:45 <Ali> And my glasses instantly steamed up

23:45 <Alice> Oof.

23:45 <Ali> There's a lot of juice out there for these storms, no wonder there's a Severe Watchbox out

23:47 <Ali> What I hope more is there's no rotation possible

23:47 * Alice flops off to do some chores. Is going a little crazy from having not done chores yet.
