Most of the times, the lag and rendering issues are self-contained problems in the game. Also, some games are meant to run at specific rates. Anything outside of that, it becomes unplayable.

11:56 <Alice> It depends on the solution chosen. For an emulator-based approach, we can just add banking. Add a register to the memory map somewhere, which selects an OAM bank. For a hardware approach, we'd need to redesign the CPU. Expand memory capacity, add new instructions for addressing expanded memory, and then some memory mapping adjustments that I don't know the terms for.

23:44 <Alice> A palette is usually a collection of colours, often loaded into memory, a set of registers, or something else, which is referenced by the rendering hardware. Swapping out colours is as simple as overwriting that collection of colours, which is faster than say, loading an entirely new sprite.
