11:23 <Alice> Hum.  500 DPI in both dimensions, 1 dot = 1m, 1500km = 416.667 meters per second.  So after 1 seconds, you'd cross approximately 75% of the "screen".  Even at 240Hz, the highest frequency I've seen for gaming monitors, that's still more than one dot per frame.

12:25 <Alice> In any case, back to the core of the problem I was discussing.  You could, in theory, assume that on X CPU with Y GPU, that logic updates will take at most N seconds in the worst case, and rendering will take at most M seconds in the worst case, and simply wait out the rest of the time if the relevant process finishes early.  This guarantees that N + M is the exact amount of time needed for an update/render.

12:26 <Alice> You can subtract this from the time of the next vertical refresh, to get the exact time to start doing a logic and render update, just in time for the screen to present the most up-to-date world state.

12:31 <Alice> So, for VR, the solution is to either predict when a vblank(This is the official term for a vertical refresh, apparently) will occur, and update and render just before it, or increase the refresh rate.

12:31 <Alice> And given the extreme cost of VR equipment as is, I suspect the latter is less likely to happen.

12:32 <Alice> Last I recall, for a good VR scenario, you need to be able to achieve 90FPS.

12:33 <Alice> Which is a bit tricky because VR works by utilizing two high-density screens.  Last time I saw resolution information, it was something close to 1080p for each screen.
