00:03 <Alice> Hum.  Okay, good.  I've got enough in place to do a basic game in C/C++ now.

00:15 <Alice> Oof.  It's not very performant, though.  Need a better solution.  Fortunately I have some ideas.  Though, I'm in need of a break.  I'm overheating.

00:16 <Alice> Honestly, I'd love to use a geometry shader for this, but that's a bit dangerous.

04:37 <Alice> Nnnngh... what's going on with me this time?  It feels like my body is waging a war, and my head's taking the brunt of it.

05:01 <Finwe> Good mornning, everypony.

05:02 * Finwe doffs his hat.

05:14 * Schism goes 'ahh.' "Strong rooibos."

05:16 * Alice covers up in bed.

05:22 <Alice> A person who hasn't left a room for 15 years.  All access to the room is recorded, date and time when any door to it is opened, cameras record the entrances 24/7.  Person inside was confirmed to be alive up to a point, but then discovered dead.  There's a name for this kind of mystery.  What is it, again, Schism?

05:23 <Schism> I wanna swear it's just a Locked Room mystery with a few twists.

05:23 <Alice> Ah, right.  Locked Room Mystery.

05:23 <Alice> That's basically what it is, actually.

05:24 <Alice> The only entrances are a large door, and a small door.  The large door is only opened for automated equipment to deliver food and such.  Likewise, the smaller door is used for smaller items.  Basically, this person shuns any and all physical interaction with other people.

05:26 <Schism> An outright hikikomori.

05:26 <Alice> It's a locked room mystery, on an isolated island, with a laboratory that's isolated via all means from the outside world.  No networks, no land lines, no phones, nothing.

05:27 <Alice> That said, one thing immediately annoys me that no one's appeared to have checked it.

05:28 <Alice> Everything in the lab is controlled by software, and no, it's not an insane AI scenario.  But that said, the means by which stuff is distributed through the large door is via these automated carts.

05:28 <Alice> The body was discovered when it was carted out on one such cart.  Which is draped in cloth.  It's a dual-layer cart, with enough space for a person to hide.  NO ONE HAS REMOVED THE DRAPED CLOTH.

05:29 <Schism> That seems rather obvious then.  XD;

05:29 <Alice> The murderer could have propped the corpse up on top of the cart the way they did with the intent to draw the attention to the body.  Once they realize the situation, their first action would be to check the video and access logs.  Looking away from the cart.

05:29 <Alice> That would give someone hiding underneath a chance to escape.

05:30 <Alice> But no one has checked for anything like that.

05:30 <Alice> It is also perfect, because the cart was automated to leave the view of the recording systems, as well.

05:31 <Alice> So if someone WAS hiding under the draped cloth, the cameras would not record them getting out, because by the time they could leave, the cart would have driven them out of the view of the camera.

05:31 <Alice> That said..

05:31 <Alice> The fact that this is so obvious to me, means that I'm wrong.

05:31 <Alice> It's too obvious a clue, and I'm oblivious to real clues.

05:33 <Alice> Put in simpler terms..

05:33 <Alice> If you ever write a mystery story, and want to know if it's too obvious, ask me to read it and discern the truth.

05:33 <Alice> If I can figure it out before the end of the story, then it's not a good mystery. :P

06:36 <Alice> Because this anime was so insistent on showing this scene in slow motion, I decided to review it carefully.

06:36 <Alice> And I noticed a detail.

06:38 <Alice> There's an elevator off to the side of the entryway into the locked room.  It has a lit indicator on it.

06:38 <Alice> As the cart's rolling the corpse out, the lights are flickering on and off, a frequency of 4 seconds.  During the lights being off, the indicator changes from B2 to R.

06:53 <Alice> Hum.  When they speak English in this episode, it sounds... odd.  Enunciated, steady paced.  I wonder if the reason they do this is to make it easier to understand, especially for those still learning English.

06:55 <Koopz> nah because the japanese VAs can't speak proper english :D

06:55 <Alice> Yeah, I'm starting to think that.

08:31 <Alice> There are different ways of teaching, and different ways of learning.  But if you ask me, a person standing in front of a class, parroting the same content time and time again, or worse yet, reading off of slides that I myself can read, is not a professor, teacher, or trainer, or someone I want in front of me.

08:31 <Alice> I want someone who can guide me, answer questions I might have, someone I can learn from.

08:31 *** Quits: PinkieShy (coolm@Pony-ck81je.67-212-45-net.sccoast.net) (Quit: Good night everyone. Wish today was better than it turned out to be.)

08:31 <Alice> Thus far, none of the university professors I have encountered have met any of those criteria.

08:33 <ConfusionRift> And I with that. But if the whole class period is literally "do this for next week" or "read this page, I'll be gone" is kinda the same to me.

08:33 <ConfusionRift> Like that professor who kept refusing to help me with certain doubts in the Database class.

08:33 <ConfusionRift> And thus, I now hate them.

08:33 <Alice> Then they are not a professor.

08:34 <Alice> As stated, I want someone who can guide me, answer questions I might have, and be someone I can learn from.  That is a teacher, a trainer.

08:34 <Alice> Someone who refuses to answer questions, or ask if students have any questions, is not a teacher.

08:34 <Alice> Or a trainer.  Or anything of the sort.

08:34 <Alice> They're just there to fulfill their requirements to the university so they can continue to do their research.

08:34 <Alice> We're an inconvenience to such people.

08:35 <Alice> What do you think professors do in their spare time?  They don't grade, that much I can tell you.

08:35 <Alice> The work is delegated to other individuals.

08:35 <ConfusionRift> "I guess someone wasn't reading and didn't keep up." | Look, I just got one hiccup to understand, and I KNOW everything else will fit where it should. | "Ah well, too bad." (walks off) | ...

08:35 <Alice> Their time, based on my experiences, is spent doing research.

08:36 <Alice> Any time that they aren't teaching, or don't have open office hours, is spent working on other stuff unrelated to teaching and training.

08:36 <Alice> Or their personal life.

08:36 <Alice> Besides.

08:37 <Alice> Post-secondary education is more akin to training to get you started.

08:37 <Alice> It's not meant to be a grand solution to catch you up to the others ahead of you.

08:37 <ConfusionRift> Like a computer class when my primary is in software engineering?

08:37 <Alice> You are supposed to be reading the textbook.  You are supposed to be applying the material that you learn.

08:38 <Alice> Why do you think I slack so much on my homework, and work on my own projects?

08:38 <Alice> The homework only teaches me one way to do things, because I am expected to meet certain, very specific, very strict guidelines.

08:38 <Alice> But what if I want to experiment with what I am studying?

08:39 <Alice> I learn faster by reading, trying, and experimentation.  Several times faster.

08:39 <Alice> In the time a single lecture has passed, I can cover approximately four weeks of material.

08:40 <ConfusionRift> I think it was mostly because the few starting years were just taxing as heck.

08:41 <Alice> No.  Even knowing that I slack, that I procrastinate on work, and that I shouldn't, I won't stop.

08:41 <Alice> Because I want to experiment with what I am doing.

08:43 <Alice> The stress I go through every semester is of my own doing.  I'm bored.  The lectures are just a person standing there, droning on, not asking the students about anything, nor accepting questions.  The labs are so mind-bogglingly simple an idiot *SHOULD* be able to do it.  The homework is nothing more than extremely specific, extremely strict requirements.  More strict than even the real world wouled expect of you.  The outcome

08:43 <Alice> is also known ahead of time, so what's the point?

08:43 <ConfusionRift> Waking up at 5am, to help getting things ready and to to campus at 6am, arrive at 7:30am, drown in classes from 8am to 2pm, go to work and stay till 8pm, finally arrive home by 9pm, try to get everything done by 10pm, go to sleep, repeat.

08:57 <Alice> It wasn't the worst mechanic I've ever seen.

08:57 <Alice> Like using the touch screen for all controls, ala SM64DS.

08:57 * PrincessRainbows looks up at ConfusionRift with teary eyes and grabby hooves

08:57 <ConfusionRift> Wasn't the worst... but really wasn't the best either. :P

08:58 <Alice> Good idea for a game to port.  Marred by terrible input execution.

08:59 <Alice> That said, I don't really see why it's such a big deal, the seal mechanic.  I never had trouble with it.  Always got it on the first try, and it was a fun little memory-type game.

09:00 <ConfusionRift> the problem is those stupid higher level patterns, and the screen not catching ONE of your inputs. Or accidentally moving to fast and falling off sequence. Or moving too slow, canceling the seal.

09:00 <Alice> Sure you just didn't suck at drawing lines? :P

09:01 <ConfusionRift> The worst of it was failing the seal, and having no more healing items and just dying. The boss persists, and you die... and have to do it all over again.

09:03 <ConfusionRift> Sir, went I'm on a rush, already flustered because the boss hurts like heck, and dealing with it for a long time, I tend to be prone to making mistakes. And pressing just a bit off center from a starting point for a pattern throws all of that away, and the fight extends.

09:03 * PrincessRainbows whimpers and grabs her pacifier before sleepies. Nini

09:03 * ConfusionRift grabbies PrincessRainbows real quick and patpats, before the crash.

09:05 <ConfusionRift> Really sweaty hands don't help. The least that I needed was for my stylus to slip, then using my finger to hopefully do the seal... and failing because the screen didn't catch any of it.

09:05 * Alice slams Death into the ground, and draws the appropriate seal, all while nomming on a freezie. "You say something?"

09:06 <ConfusionRift> Now that's one thing. Death? Had NO issues. Hurt a lot, but all was dodgeable. The seal was the only thing that gave me issues in that fight.

09:11 <Alice> I think ultimately, it was more just a case of overwhelming strength for me.  Probably because I spent more time exploring and such.

09:11 <Alice> My usual technique for metroidvanias as of late has been "Okay, I know a boss is there.  Let's explore every other possible region I can first."

09:12 <ConfusionRift> I tend to do that before heading to a boss, unless I can't go somewhere because I need something to go there. In which case, boss time.

09:12 *** Quits: Ali (Ali@Pony-n3j093.iplsin.sbcglobal.net) (Quit: Leaving)

09:13 <Alice> The only time a Castlevania game after SOTN gave me any trouble was usually on a higher difficulty.

09:13 <ConfusionRift> Last I remember, the game was fair in balance... except for the bosses, which usually had an ace move that would remind you to DODGE.

09:13 <Alice> Because not only does level become constrained, but the damage output of the enemy tends to more than double.

09:14 <Alice> I am reckless in games.

09:14 <Alice> More often than not, I choose to take damage than avoid it.

09:14 <ConfusionRift> Oh, and Order of Ecclesia, simply because I forget about the MP drain with everything... and the crab... and the crab...

09:14 <Alice> Sometimes I wonder if that works to my benefit through the invincibility frames concept.

09:14 <Alice> The crab is, surprisingly, the easest boss for me to no-damage.

09:15 <Alice> It has a very specific pattern and behaviour, such that I can dodge it with ease.

09:15 <Alice> Nah, the giant skeleton was more of a problem for me.

09:15 <Alice> Especially on higher difficulties.

09:16 <Alice> Assuming I even got to it.  Geezus hells, the higher difficulty makes the first few areas a living hell.

09:17 <ConfusionRift> When you know how the boss works, it's no issue. It was more the issue of getting cramped, and having a decent arcing weapon. It was more of me and my cousin, who were stumped by that crab. Ooooh was it satisfying to turn into soup afterwards.

09:18 <Alice> Heh.

09:18 <Finwe> Your boss works by making you work.

09:18 <Finwe> o3o

09:18 <Alice> The hardest boss in Ecclesia, for me, by far, was that one shadow boss deep in the castle.

09:21 <ConfusionRift> Also, was gonna mention that if you're way too reckless in the starting areas, they WILL remind you the game's not gonna hold you. Oh no, everything is pain. No biggie once you get it. I don't remember any other place where I was really stomped due to a boss being a pain, aside from the crab incident.

09:52 <ConfusionRift> I guess testing the technical aspects of finding a way to port something from a more advanced hardware into a more limited one. Not meant to run well, just to see it would work. "This is a novelty port of the sm64-port to DOS. Do not expect it to be playable."

09:52 <Alice> https://twitter.com/Foone/status/1302820468819288066?s=19 I'm not kidding about the pregnancy test kit thing.

09:53 <ConfusionRift> They did say Doom could run on anything. they weren't kidding.

09:54 <Alice> It's not that it'll run on anything.

09:54 <Alice> It's that people will make it run on anything.

09:56 <Alice> Toaster has a digital screen and a processor?  They'll get it running on your toaster, so you can DOOM while toasting.  As an added bonus, they'll make it burn the DOOM Guy's face on the toast.

12:04 <Lumindia> I mean

12:04 <Lumindia> that SM64 DOS thing... that seems... decently playable

19:04 <Alice> Well, I've confirmed that the warmth I'm feeling isn't imagined.

19:04 <Alice> I checked my forehead temperature and compared it to last night's results.

19:05 <Alice> Last night, when I was feeling bad, it was 96.16.  Right now?  It's so low that the thermometer is having trouble getting a reading.  93.4 is the only reading I got.

19:06 <Ali> Isn't 93 just as bad as 101?  I have no clue.

19:07 <Alice> This is from the forehead, not the ear.

19:08 <Alice> It's an inner-ear thermometer.  Uses a probe on the tip.

19:08 <Alice> I was more just checking to see if there was a drastic change in the temperature of my forehead when I feel sick and groggy.

19:08 <Alice> Because my forehead feels like it's burning, as do my cheeks, when I start feeling blah.

19:09 <Alice> And yet, my ears report no change in temperature.

19:24 <Alice> So, apparently, the Megaman PSX games, particularly Megaman X6, has an interesting bug.  If you somehow manage to outspeed the camera's scrolling ability, you can kill yourself by attempting to progress downwards if, at the location X is, the camera was supposed to start scrolling downwards, but doesn't because it's still trying to catch up to him from a horizontal section.

19:25 <Lumindia> '-' didn't Sonic 1 suffer from something like that?

19:25 <Lumindia> because Sonic 1 was somewhat jank

19:25 <Alice> I don't recall.

19:26 <Alice> But other bugs include "Safely landing on a floor at just the right time to not be killed by instant-kill moving lava, but still dying anyways a frame later."

19:26 <Alice> Turns out X's hit box descends ever so slightly into the floor at that point for some reason, and it touches the lava, killing him.

19:29 <Alice> Looks like, depending on the direction of scrolling, the game is designed to kill in the case of leaving the screen in the opposing axis.

19:30 <Alice> If the section is horizontal, going down too far kills.  Going upwards is fine for obvious reasons in such cases.

19:30 <Alice> But if the section is vertical, going off the left or right edges kills.

19:30 <Alice> Author of the videos I'm watching has a clip that demonstrates this.

19:31 <Alice> https://www.youtube.com/post/Ugyzn0P62dgB2FtjTZx4AaABCQ

19:31 <Alice> He's modified the engine a bit to do his runs, more for giggles than anything else.  Basically, super-fast dashing.

19:32 <Alice> Because of the high speed, he's managing to push X's hitbox just far enough past solid walls for collision detection to detect "Oh, he's touching outside the camera bounds" and it kills.

19:33 <Alice> It's interesting that they chose to do damage/OHKO detection before collision resolution, though.

19:34 <Alice> https://www.youtube.com/post/UgyFz_IrA_zQdHyixwx4AaABCQ Game really doesn't like what he's doing, though.  He's moving so fast that he's apparently passing markers that go "Load this image data."

19:57 <Schism> Mm.  Back to work.  Gotta love getting time and a half and then a paid day off later at my leisure.

20:33 <Alice> Currently, my mind is visualizing a tube-like enclosure with a thin wall.  In the interior of the tube is a thick-walled, hollow roter-like tube, split along the tube's length into 8 segments.  Within THAT tube is the typical blazing star.  For most of the time, the internal roter is spinning slowly.  But currently, it is spinning up, and heat and wind pressure are radiating from the ends of the tube, as if the entire structure

20:33 <Alice> were like some form of weird jet engine.

23:03 <Alice> This is why relying on a compiler to optimize is a poor idea.

23:03 <Alice> My initial tilemap renderer got ~900 FPS on my laptop, with a 64x64 tile map.

23:03 <Alice> It was just a "Get it working" thing at first.

23:03 <Alice> So I then moved onto "Get it working fast"

23:03 <Alice> I rewrote the code, used a new shader for tile map rendering.

23:03 <Alice> 4,400 FPS.
