07:07 * Dappled grabs a stick to chew on.
07:08 <Dappled> So I had a thought for how that new Zelda, Age of Calamity should end.
07:11 <Dappled> We already know how the story ends because it's a prequel to Breath of the Wild. So I'm thinking that the final boss fight should check your play time on Breath of the Wild to see how much time you spent dicking around to determine how long you have to fight Ganon while Link is off collecting Korok

07:12 <ConfusionRift> "Well done, you have collected all the seeds." | Yes! Now, on to finish this. | "Hope you didn't forget about the moon." | What moo- (BOOM, back to the start) :0

10:41 <Alice> I should go take a shower.
10:42 <Alice> I'll be back in about 30 minutes or so.
10:44 <ConfusionRift> Apparently, "Jason's" color palette is a shared. This isn't an unknown or cheap practice. Many do this to conserve space and resources. The problem is when they decide to use that palette for assets in levels. This causes Jason's armor to change color sporadically depending of the stage.
10:44 <ConfusionRift> Oh, and if you die on certain areas, the game freaks out and scrambles the background sprites.
10:47 <Dappled> This game seems very poorly programmed.

12:15 <DerpyBot> Twilight told me this video is about Redout \\\"Rotorua\\\" Boss
12:18 <ConfusionRift> Guessing the portals?
12:19 <Alice> Nah, just the speed and motion.
12:19 <Alice> That game though, it inspires me in a funky way.
12:21 <ConfusionRift> This is a long track, for sure. Hmmm... Redout... ah, right, the not-Wipeout.
12:21 <Alice> I want to create an incredibly low-detail racing game. Like, DOS-era 3D polygon type detail. Why? I want to see if I can create a game in which the internal tick rate of the logic is 1000Hz. Yeah, no display would ever be able to handle it at full speed, but I'd make rendering itself run at whatever speed the monitor is set up to render at, so it'd be able to handle up to 1000Hz displays in the far future.
12:22 <Alice> But in order to achieve that, everything has to be done within 1ms. Update and render.
12:22 <Alice> The only way to achieve that is through extremely optimized or simple collision detection, and low polygon count.
12:23 <Alice> Also, yeah, it's a long track because it's a Redout boss track.
12:24 <Alice> Boss tracks basically combine as many(if not all) track segments from every other racetrack for the given region into one long track.
12:24 <Alice> That's why it's only 2 laps.
12:24 <ConfusionRift> That also explains the portals.
12:24 <Alice> Yeah.
12:24 <Alice> The portals are used to connect segments.
12:24 <ConfusionRift> That's actually super smart.
12:26 <ConfusionRift> Most games would just link the segments. With racing games moving barriers to open paths to other tracks. In this case, portals link portions of the tracks to make a super long track,

14:39 <Schism> Knock on wood, then. While I'd certainly gain some level of delight were Exxon-Mobil to crash like a tanker truck off a cliff, we can hope it happens *after* you receive that premium.
14:39 <RazorSharpFang> It is possible for it to get that low. That's fine, I have the cash on wood to meet that financial obligation.
14:40 <RazorSharpFang> I think the oil industry has a really long and painful future.

14:41 <RazorSharpFang> I'm thinking that oil peaking power plants will be around for a long while to pick up slack that renewables can't output or adjust.
14:41 <Schism> That is a given. Though a great part of me really wants to see nuclear energy take off again.

14:43 <RazorSharpFang> It's like some kind of weird joke sometimes.
14:44 <RazorSharpFang> That said, I still don't understand how they generate those weird candle shapes on the stock-charts.
14:47 <Schism> Ah, the main body of the 'candle' shows the difference between opening and closing (with a black, or red candle illustrating a fall in closing price, and a white, or unfilled candle illustrating a rise), and the 'wick' on either end shows the highest or lowest sale prices.
14:48 <Schism> This image is helpful to use as a guideline, which is why it's on Wikipedia: https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/3/3c/Candlestick_Chart_in_MetaTrader_5.png
14:49 <RazorSharpFang> So many different kinds of candles.
14:50 <Schism> Nah, just two kinds. White candles imply a rise, black candles imply a fall. And then you can see that, for example, on the 13th of September, there was a rise, but there were also some buyers who managed to get a good deal on the stock.
14:52 <Schism> Each candle follows the other, with minor variations depending on off-hours trading.

16:08 <Schism> Also, wurp. I'd offer a virtual hug if it wouldn't warm you up.
16:08 <Alice> I can't, without breaking numerous channel rules, express my opinion of the university this semester.
16:09 <Schism> Could be worse. You could still be stuck with your Japanese teacher from the last iteration.
16:09 <Alice> True.
16:09 <Alice> I got the good Japanese prof this time, so at least that's worth my money.
16:09 <Alice> But the Databases prof...
16:09 <Alice> I've heard stories.
16:09 <Alice> I assumed it was just the students being students, and whining as usual.
16:10 <Alice> Buuut this gives credence to those stories, as he's not even uploading lecture notes or recordings on the day of the lectures, nor is there any Q&A period.
16:10 <Schism> I, um. You'll have to forgive me if I find that a little ironic.
16:10 <Alice> Hmm?
16:10 <Alice> Yes, I whine about some profs, I am aware.

16:11 <Schism> I'm not saying you're *wrong*, by any stretch, it's just...
16:11 <Alice> You're right. Not all students are like that.
16:12 <Alice> But uh, a good portion are, based on experience from watching forums, being in the CCSS lounge, and listening to students after class.
16:12 <Schism> Again, you're not *wrong* there, at all.
16:12 <Alice> A majority of it is in the form of "The professor isn't teaching us everything or answering basic questions."
16:12 <Alice> This is just plain "Not doing one's job."
16:13 <Schism> You missed a part of that.
16:13 <Alice> Hmm?
16:14 <Schism> Answering basic questions they've already answered a dozen times before. But yes, that DB teacher sounds like he's simply not even bothering.
16:15 <Alice> Honestly, if I could have gone another semester without classes, I would have. Unfortunately, the university forced my hand, and I have to attend this semester, whether I want to or not, or am mentally sound enough to do so.
16:16 <Schism> There is the advantage this semester that, while not the case for *every* class, you can at least take some virtually.
16:16 <Alice> Oh, in my field?
16:16 <Alice> I can take all of them virtually.
16:17 <Schism> Oh, good. This also assists with documentation in the eventuality that you need to lodge a complaint.
16:17 <Alice> There isn't a single class that can't be done remotely in my field.
16:18 <Alice> Everything is all either theory, and thus just a lot of lectures, reading, multiple choice quizzes/exams, or practical application classes, which all involve writing code.
16:18 <Alice> Which can be done at home, and submitted to the school.
16:18 <Alice> I would not be shocked if future semesters for my program, regardless of the pandemic, are done virtually from now on.
16:19 <Schism> It seems like a decent reason for a trial balloon, yeah.
16:19 <Alice> It would free up classrooms and lab rooms.
16:19 <Schism> It would perhaps be a bad idea for me to take a class in algorithms. I might get a wild hair and turn in my assignments in Befunge.
16:19 <Alice> Usually you can't do that.
16:19 <Alice> The classes have set languages you are meant to use.
16:19 <Alice> The typical choices at this university appear to be Java, C, C++ and Python.
16:19 <Schism> I know, I know. (I'd probably turn in one regularly and see if I could port it over, though.)
16:20 <Alice> Though there are the rare classes that use other languages.
16:20 <Alice> Programming Paradigms, for example, uses functional languages.
16:20 <Schism> I have to wonder. Why *not* use Befunge to teach algorithms? It seems like a sensible way to do so.
16:20 <Alice> Which includes LISP and the like.
16:21 <Alice> I actually have no idea what Befunge is. *Researches*
16:21 <Schism> Have fun~
16:21 <Alice> Ah, one of those languages.
16:22 <Alice> Why do you even know that language? :P

16:22 <Schism> Alice: For the same reason I know about INTERCAL!
16:22 <Alice> Heh.
16:23 <Schism> I strongly suspect, too, that Befunge might have been a part of the inspiration for SpaceChem.
16:23 <Alice> It's a simple, straightforward language, compared to some esoteric or joke languages I've seen.
16:24 <Schism> Oh, absolutely. The only thing odd about it is its interpreter.
16:24 <Schism> In that way, I might even call it closer to a scripting language?

16:26 <Alice> That said, it CAN be compiled apparently.
16:28 <Schism> Well, that's a given, the question is just how to read the code.
16:30 <Schism> The chief reason why programming languages use words is so that they can be read by humans without a significant amount of training. Esoteric languages invert that, going way past machine code into the realm of incomprehensibility.
16:31 <Schism> Therein, of course, lies their appeal.
