00:22 <Dappled> Then again, maybe I should hold onto the masterball. After all it should be used on a fearow or tentacruel.

07:05 <Finwe> Interesting, the German word for the foodstuff in question is Brezel, while English obviously uses the Polish form "precel".

07:25 <Koopz> yes, let the scruffy pones deal with peacekeeping

07:25 <Finwe> Viz., this one: https://www.lieder.net/get_text.html?TextId=80983

07:25 * PrincessRainbows looks up in awe and claps her hooves

07:26 <Koopz> never heard that one

07:27 <Koopz> text is so old, average germans would only understand half of it

07:28 <Finwe> It was written by a physics major guy who abandoned his physics studies and went to the music academy instead.

07:30 <Finwe> The original is called "Wiegenlied für meinen Jungen".

07:30 <Finwe> From the collection Aber die Liebe by Richard Dehmel. o3o

07:31 <Finwe> The parody is called HRK-Wiegenlied.

07:31 <Finwe> Koopz: And yes, I've been in the military, as it was obligatory.

09:31 <Golden> Yo

09:38 <Alice> Morning.

09:39 <Alice> Hmm.  Interesting idea, nVidia.  Transparent Huge Pages.

09:41 <Alice> Basically, the gist of it is that we reduce overhead of allocating pages, and paging in and out of pages in applications using large amounts of RAM, by transparently making use of huge pages, which are simply larger pages.  We currently, normally use 4KiB pages.  The THP stuff utilizes 1GiB pages.

09:50 <Alice> Why this even matters:  1GiB with huge pages just requires 1 entry in the table.  Yes, it comes with the overhead of taking much longer to page from disk if it's paged out(And usually, they aren't, for this reason.)  Meanwhile, using 4KiB pages?  A little over 262,000 entries.  o3o;

09:51 <Alice> Meanwhile, there's yet another size, 2MiB, that's unused.  That would be 512 entries.

10:56 *** Joins: AppleDash (appled@Gladiolus.Rocks)

10:56 <Alice> I need to play Bioshock Infinite, myself.

10:56 <Alice> I wonder if my mother would enjoy that.

10:56 <Alice> Also, completely off-topic, but why the hell does the te-form of u-verbs have so many rules, and one exception in such rules?

10:58 <ConfusionRift> That's language for ya.

11:00 <Alice> う、つ、る, you change the ending to って. む、ぶ、ぬ, you change the ending to んで. く, you change it to いて.  But there's an exception for 行く, which becomes 行って instead.  ぐ, replace with いで.  す, replace with して.

11:00 <Alice> Then you got the irregular verbs, するー>して, and くるー>きて.

11:00 <Alice> Meanwhile, ru verbs are simple.  るー>て.   That's it.

11:01 <Alice> Oh, and yeah, ru appears both in u-verbs and ru-verbs, with different transformations for each.

11:01 <Alice> You need to know the difference in the type of verb to figure out what transformation to use.

11:02 <Alice> But... then again, now that I think about it, English has a lot of problems like this too.  I just take it for granted because I'm fluent in it.

11:02 <DerpyBot> New post on Equestria Daily by Calpain: Morning Discussion #2070 [ http://tinyurl.com/y2n8rjpw ]

11:05 <Alice> Are there any fun transformations for verbs, adjectives and such in Spanish, ConfusionRift?

11:07 <ConfusionRift> I was gonna mention how accentuation can affect the meaning of a work completely. What's odd is that I was kinda reading on it just a minute ago, as a refresher... and I'm pretty sure the explanation in English is different from what it should be. That, or I forgot how it all worked.

11:07 <ConfusionRift> But yes, it has it's rules as well.

11:08 <Alice> Including ones that make no logical sense when you examine it externally?

11:09 <ConfusionRift> Suppose we could say that.

11:10 <Alice> It's no wonder language is so hard to automatically translate.

11:10 <Alice> Besides what you said about inflection, there's a lot of rules.

11:10 <ConfusionRift> There are rules based on how a work ends, the syllable that is stressed, and the number of syllables.

11:11 <Alice> You can't just translate plain text one-to-one, because either there are words that are missing in the target language, or there is context involved that's not taken into consideration.

11:11 <ConfusionRift> But there are exceptions that break the rules, and it's based on where it's stressed the most.

11:14 * Alice sticks with English, Japanese, and her programming languages, which generally cannot be spoken.

11:14 <Alice> Of course, they also don't really convey meaning in the same manner as spoken or written language.

11:15 <ConfusionRift> For example: EL = the (items have gender, yes), and ÉL = him.

11:16 <Alice> Yeah, I'm familiar with gendered terminology in other languages.  French does the same.  English has it's gendered terms as well, but it's not as... I don't know how to express what I mean.

11:17 <ConfusionRift> se = being (reflective), sé = know.

11:17 <Alice> See, in that case, written, I'd see the two as distinct words.

11:17 <Alice> Because of the accent on the letter 'e'.

11:18 <Alice> Accents.  They may make typing some languages a pain in the rear, but they do help with pronunciation and inflection to a degree, if you know how they affect the letter.

11:19 <Alice> ... By the way, random question out of the blue, related to languages.  You're extremely fluent in English, that much is apparent.  Do you still use Spanish, though?  Are there people, friends, family, that you talk to in Spanish still, these days?

11:20 <ConfusionRift> I'm near the border.

11:20 <Alice> I ask, because I get the impression that when people learn the local "dominant" language, they tend to start using it almost exclusively at some point.

11:21 <ConfusionRift> Since I'm so close to the border, there are a lot of people who speak Spanish. Though by another dialect. Now, I would rather stick to English as much as I could.

11:21 <Alice> Fair enough.

11:22 <Alice> Also, my geography is terrible, and my memory of regions people are in terrible, so A)  I don't recall what state you live in, and B)  Unless it's like, Texas, California, D.C., or New York, I likely don't know where the state actually *IS*.

11:22 <ConfusionRift> Texas. :P

11:22 <Alice> When it comes to geography, I only know general, approximate locations of large entities.

11:23 *** Joins: RazorSharpFang (RazorSharpF@Pony-fgj803.tpgi.com.au)

11:23 <Alice> I know Canada is near the top of North America.  The US is South of Canada.  And South of the US is Mexico.  And so on, and so on.

11:23 <Alice> I actually don't even remember the locations of every province in Canada.  Not something I've ever really needed to know.

11:25 <RazorSharpFang> The US is also west of Canada too

11:25 <Alice> Let's see... from left to right, bottom to top...  British Columbia, Alberta, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Ontario, Quebec, Newfoundland.  Then we got the Northwest Territories(Which, for reasons unknown, my brain says "It's been renamed", then Nunavut.  I'm pretty sure I got a lot of that wrong.

11:25 <Alice> Hell I forgot an entire province.

11:25 <ConfusionRift> Which is understandable. I kinda have the same issue, though I kinda keep track of a few others due to where I lived. But yeah, I'm not 100% accurate as to where each state is. Heck, I still get lost in here. Then again, it's the largest state.

11:26 <Alice> A few of them, actually.

11:26 <Alice> I also mixed up the order a bit.

11:26 <Alice> Honestly, geography was a boring subject for me.  Even history, a dry subject for me, was more interesting.

11:27 <RazorSharpFang> Australia doesn't have that many states so it's easy for me.

11:27 <RazorSharpFang> Western Australia, Northern Territory, South-Australia, Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria, Tasmania and the Australian-Capital-Territory.

11:28 <Alice> Australia's a fun case for me, geography-wise.

11:29 <Alice> Basically, the issue is Australi and New Zealand.

11:30 <Alice> I know the two are distinct, but my mind likes to combine the two for some reason.

11:30 <Alice> I blame the media.

11:30 <RazorSharpFang> They're easy to blame.

11:33 <RazorSharpFang> It takes me 30 seconds to download the map now.

11:33 <ConfusionRift> But yeah, was gonna throw things off a loop a bit.

11:36 <Alice> In general, don't ask me for directions to regions of the world.

11:36 <Alice> Now, local directions?  That's a bit better.

11:36 <Alice> My memory seems pretty eidetic when it comes to directions to location B from location A.

11:37 <ConfusionRift> Rules of accentuation are used according to how a word ends, the syllable that is stressed, and the number of syllables. "está", as in third person of "estar", which is to be, is accentuated because rules dictate that if the first syllable from right to left is stressed and word ends with n or s or a vowel, it's accentuated.

11:38 <Alice> Japanese is... funky, these days.

11:39 <Alice> Traditionally, it's written top-to-bottom, right-to-left.

11:39 <Alice> Guess what's hard to design UIs around?

11:40 <RazorSharpFang> Text-Alignment?

11:40 <Alice> Less that, and more vertical layouts.

11:41 <Alice> Left-to-right is easy.  As is right-to-left, to a degree(I don't know why it's somehow more complicated than left-to-right), but vertical languages?

11:41 <Alice> The core issue there is less space.

11:41 <Alice> Current displays are wider than they are taller, and it's only getting worse.

11:42 <Alice> So there's less space for a complete sentence in a vertical language, than a horizontal one.  Especially a language that uses characters that are all the same dimensions.

11:42 <Alice> It also introduces all sorts of problems in terms of GUI layout design.

11:43 <Alice> It's conventional to expect the application menu underneath the title bar, Apple and Gnome be damned.

11:43 <Alice> But where would you place it on a vertical layout?

11:43 <Alice> Where do you place the title bar, too?  Left side?  Right side?  And does the menu go on the right or left side of the title bar?

11:44 <Alice> How does the menu itself function?  Is it horizontal with items being vertical lines?

11:44 <Alice> There's also issues with font support.  Many fonts simply don't implement vertical layout data.

11:45 <Alice> The end-result, is that basically, Japanese and Chinese, the two vertically-written languages I know, are written left-to-right, top-to-bottom instead, like a majority of the languages out there.

11:46 <Alice> Simply because otherwise, it introduces too many problems.

11:50 <Alice> Mmm.  Thinking about it, I can see why RTL layouts are troublesome.  UIs are often designed with the idea that text is LTR, so when it's switched to RTL, oddities can crop up.

11:51 <Alice> By the way, ConfusionRift.  Do you use a special layout keyboard that has the accented characters for Spanish, or do you use the dead key approach?

11:51 <Alice> Dead key approach being you press one key, and then press another.

11:53 <ConfusionRift> Nah, we use standard US layout keyboards. Different is, over there, we would set them for accents, so we can use dead keys. If not, we would use ALT-codes for vowels with tildes.

11:53 <Alice> Ah.

11:54 <Alice> Yeah, that seems to be the general approach here in Canada, as well.  Maybe an extra key.

11:54 <Alice> English, we just use the standard US layout.  French, I'm not exactly sure, I haven't checked.  But there's a Canadian Multi-lingual layout, as well.

11:54 <Alice> Which I had on my old laptop.

11:56 <Alice> https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CSA_keyboard

11:56 <Alice> That's Canada's multi-lingual layout keyboard.

11:56 <Alice> https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/QWERTY#/media/File:KB_Canadian_French_text.svg Apparently, this is the French layout.

11:56 <Alice> Basically, US layout, with an extra key next to 'z', and many more symbols on each key.

11:59 <Alice> https://i.imgur.com/HIW8J5y.png Meanwhile, this is the godawful keyboard layout my new laptop has for some bloody reason.

11:59 <Alice> Guess which keys I hit way too frequently by accident?

12:00 <ConfusionRift> That's the standard US layout-oooh nooo. (points at the corner) What is that mess?!

12:00 <AppleDash> Looks fine to me

12:01 <Alice> It's not good for programming with.

12:01 <Alice> ConfusionRift:  Which corner?

12:02 <ConfusionRift> Question... is that button on the top right corner the power button?

12:02 <Alice> Yes.

12:02 <Alice> It's got the brightest damned white LED in it, too.  Not THAT huge of an issue, but it can't be turned off.

12:03 <ConfusionRift> The problem I see is that it's too close to the delete and backspace keys.

12:04 <Alice> Fortunately, I don't use the delete key much.  Even then, the button is quite sturdy, and requires a lot more effort to press than a keyboard key.

12:04 <Finwe> Alice: Meanwhile, he French French keyboard,

12:04 <Alice> Also, you can disable the power off/sleep function of the button, so that it's impossible to accidentally power down the system.

12:05 <Alice> As it is, holding it down to power down a system uncleanly also takes 15 seconds.

12:05 <Alice> So, they were smart about the button itself.

12:05 <Alice> No, the problem I have is the page-up and page-down keys.

12:05 <ConfusionRift> The page up and down buttons are wedged near the arrow keys.

12:05 <ConfusionRift> Ah, there it be. :P

12:05 <Alice> That's the core problem.

12:05 <Alice> That, and...

12:06 <Alice> I'm used to Fn+Left being Home, Fn+Right being End.

12:06 <Alice> Fn+Up and Fn+Down I'm used to being Page Up and Page Down.

12:06 <ConfusionRift> And those are on top.

12:06 <Alice> I resolved it in a roundabout manner.

12:06 <ConfusionRift> You might end up adjusting the brightness by accident.

12:07 <Alice> I use Linux, so that Windows keys is, effectively, mostly useless.

12:07 <RazorSharpFang> Alice, but then how do you press Home+Left at the same time?

12:07 <Finwe> Alice: How so?

12:07 <AppleDash> You can bind it to all sorts of useful things

12:07 <Alice> Mmm.

12:07 <Finwe> You can use the Windows key as either Meta or Compose.

12:07 <Alice> I've bound Windows+Left/Right/Up/Down to the respective functions I'm used to.

12:07 <Alice> RazorSharpFang:  I have no idea where I'd use Home+Left.

12:08 <Alice> Also, through remapping, I can also disable the page-up and page-down keys.

12:09 <Alice> The only issue I have with all this is that IMEs bug out through my usage of xmodmap for that.

12:09 <Alice> For whatever reason, IMEs lock up for several seconds if the keyboard's been remapped.

12:11 <Finwe> https://photos.app.goo.gl/qaHWRVBYo7FFteQUA

12:11 <Finwe> That's what I call a keyboard.

12:12 <Finwe> Sun Type 6 Finnish/Swedish keyboard with all the necessary keys.

12:12 <AppleDash> Clean your... everything

12:12 <Alice> I don't think that's a picture he took.

12:12 <Alice> Although...

12:13 <AppleDash> Who links a Google Photos link to somebody else's photo?

12:13 <Finwe> It is, I just mostly use the Apple keyboard in the background.

12:13 <Alice> ... Yeah, I just realized that, AppleDash.

12:14 <Alice> But yes, I don't mean to be critical of the cleanliness of your workspace, but I would not work with those keyboards without first cleaning them and the area around them.

12:14 <Alice> I have enough trouble using a keyboard for more than a month without washing it clean because of the grime buildup my skin does.

12:14 * ConfusionRift looks at his not-so-clean workspace. "...right."

12:15 <Alice> Oh, my workspace is a mess.

12:15 <Finwe> The Sun keyboard is not in use, and it has some hopeless stains.

12:15 <Alice> But I try to keep the dust and grime down.

12:15 <Alice> The dust because I'm allergic to dust mites.  The grime, because it just makes everything feel icky after a while.

12:17 <Finwe> But my point was, whatever can you do without useful keys like Props, Meta, Compose, Fronwt, Sleep, Find and Help.

12:17 <Finwe> *Front

12:17 <Alice> You generally don't need extra keys, that all said..

12:17 <Finwe> Or Copy.

12:17 <Alice> I would not mind making my own keyboard with some Japanese-specific keys.

12:18 <Finwe> Without a Copy key, you'd need to press several keys in order to copy text, for example.

12:18 <Finwe> Now how awkward would that be?

12:18 <Alice> CTRL+C isn't that awkward.

12:18 <Alice> But then, back then, CTRL+C, CTRL+V, and so on, weren't yet commonplace, presumably.

12:19 <Alice> That said, that keyboard would fall under the definition of a Canadian Multilingual keyboard.

12:19 <Alice> It has the extra key next to the Z key.

12:19 <Alice> So it could be used as a Canadian multilingual keyboard.

12:20 <Alice> Anyways, I got about an hour before a quiz today in Japanese.  I'm gonna go finish the rest of my study and practice for it.

12:50 <Alice> Ow, my arm.

12:51 <Alice> ... Did I just injure my arm by WRITING?

12:55 <Alice> Right, time to stop studying, and relax before my quiz so that I don't panic.

12:55 <ConfusionRift> Oh... right... I should go to sleep. Laters!

13:12 <Alice> Right, so I feel weak, nauseous, and like I'm about to keel over and vomit.  I'm not sure if this is stress from a simple quiz, or because I consumed something bad.  I'm betting a mix of both, given how strong it is.

13:13 * Alice bookmarks RFC2119 for future reference.

13:20 <Alice> Holy ****, yeah, I think I either ate something bad, or I've been incubating something that finally sprouted wings and decided to fly around in my stomach.  This isn't stress.  I've never had stress so bad that my stomach wants to come up on me.

14:33 <Nedemai> landlords been fixing up this place, which has included painting and a lot of wood cutting / nailing

14:34 <Alice> Yeah, they're cutting down trees here because... I don't honestly know.

14:34 <Nedemai> I sympathize

14:34 <Alice> One of the trees made sense.  Half of it appeared dead.

14:34 <Alice> These trees though are in perfect shape, though.

14:34 <Alice> Makes me wonder if they're planning to run something through this area.

16:50 <Alice> Hum, I'm starting to recognize more and more words in Japanese when I watch anime.  Also, I'm able to read more and more signage and labeling.

16:50 <Alice> I'm surprised that I'm able to do this with such a small vocabulary to work with, and only a few kanji memorized.

16:52 <Schism|Nocturne> That is one of the things about linguistic acquisition -- the 'foot in the door' approach.

16:52 *** Schism|Nocturne is now known as Schism
