00:49 * Schism stretches. She pauses. She stretches some more, and various pops erupt from her body. She takes a deep breath. And then she screams.

00:51 * Ali cries and covers her ears, the pain the extreme pain!

00:51 * Schism is careful to scream into a pillow so as not to hurt the Ali.

00:52 <Schism> Sorry... ;-;

00:52 <Ali> Unicorn's ears are sensitive T.T

00:52 <Schism> My voice isn't that shrill, if it helps...

00:53 <Ali> Not much to be honest.  A loud noise is a loud noise to my ears.

00:54 <Ali> But this is why I'm glad I don't work in customer service anymore

00:54 <Ali> Too many morons.

00:54 <Schism> Yea...

00:54 <Ali> I've got an epic WTF story from years ago

00:54 <Ali> I worked at Customer Service at a store, and they had these various Christmas tins on sale

00:54 <Schism> This one, I'm like, "Okay, you ordered these during the holiday season, and now you're upset that they're not going to reach you, all the way across the country, by Wednesday.  Okay, I'll contact our shipper and have them RTS'd."

00:54 <Schism> And oh?

00:55 <Ali> This lady came up to the desk and was trying to get the prices adjusted on them

00:55 <Schism> Oh yes.  On what grounds, pray?

00:55 <Ali> But the problem was, she was wanting the prices adjusted HIGHER than what they were

00:56 <Ali> I couldn't get into this lady's brain, that what she was charged was right, but she kept insisting they were another size, thus would've cost more

00:56 <Schism> I feel like I've heard this story before.

00:56 <Ali> I might have told it before

00:56 <Ali> This went on for like ten to twenty minutes

00:56 <Schism> Possibly.  Might've also been on NotAlwaysRight, but I suspect that everyone has some variant thereupon.

00:56 <Ali> I eventually just slammed my head onto the desk in frustration.

00:56 <Ali> Like its one of those I can't believe I'm having to go thru this moment

00:58 <Ali> I will not do Customer Service again.  With how rude people are now and insisiting stupid things.

00:59 <Schism> "Okay," I say to the customer.  "Your thirty items never arrived.  I can understand this, and sometimes shipments do go missing, or are somehow lost otherwise.  Or stolen.  This happens.  So why in the name of sanity would we then subsequently refund you for a second missing order to the same address?"

01:00 <Schism> Because why yes I'd be glad to refund you another $1500.

01:00 <Schism> Would you like me to provide you with a happy ending as well?  (For the young ones in the audience, that means an ice cream sundae.)

01:21 <Lumindia> you're right, I don't

14:28 <Cepheid> Yes.

14:28 <Cepheid> It's... a beneficial thing.

14:29 <Cepheid> Especially for Mac gamers.

14:29 <Cepheid> See, Apple is deprecating OpenGL, so in the future, OpenGL games will no longer run on Macs.

14:30 *** Quits: Taoki (MirceaKitsu@Pony-sme.fv9.240.188.IP) (Ping timeout: 121 seconds)

14:30 <Cepheid> Apple, being closed and proprietary as it is these days, is promoting the use of Metal at the exclusion of all other APIs.

14:30 <Lumindia> yeah I don't know what 'Metal' is

14:30 <Cepheid> So, no OpenGL, no Vulkan, no DirectX.  And with switching to ARM, installing Windows on their laptops will presumably become impossible.

14:30 <Cepheid> It's an API for accessing the graphics card to do rendering.

14:31 <Cepheid> Similar to OpenGL, Vulkan, DirectX.

14:31 <Cepheid> But proprietary.

14:31 <Cepheid> That is, it's only supported by Apple hardware.

14:31 <Lumindia> yeah I can see why that'd be an issue

14:31 <Cepheid> It doesn't work on Windows, Linux, or anything else.

14:32 <Cepheid> Thus, it FORCES development of two different versions of an application that intends to use 3D graphics.

14:32 <Cepheid> And is intended to be released on Macs and standard PCs.

14:32 <Cepheid> See, at the least, Linux and Windows support OpenGL and Vulkan, so if you develop towards that, you're golden for getting the code to work on Linux and Windows with minimal amounts of changes.

14:33 <Cepheid> But if you want to develop for Mac OS X, you have to use a completely different API.  Everything has to be rewritten from scratch for it.

14:33 <Cepheid> That said, there have been efforts to resolve the problem, that Apple has begrudgingly accepted as "allowed" for development on Mac OS X and iOS.

14:34 <Cepheid> One such effort is called MoltenVK.  It basically maps the Metal API to Vulkan API calls.  So if you make a Vulkan application, and link against MoltenVK, it'll work just fine on Mac OS X or iOS.

14:34 <Cepheid> This here is the important bit with respect to that earlier OpenGL-on-Vulkan thing.

14:35 <Cepheid> You can use MoltenVK to enable Vulkan on Mac OS X and iOS.  Then use this OpenGL-on-Vulkan thing to provide OpenGL through MoltenVK.

14:35 <Cepheid> Thus restoring OpenGL.

14:36 <Cepheid> Shouldn't HAVE to do this.

14:36 <Cepheid> But Apple.

14:38 <RazorSharpFang> Apple looking to walk in Microsoft's footsteps?

14:39 <ADragonDreaming> Old Microsoft, it seems.

14:40 <ADragonDreaming> Current Microsoft has seemingly embraced an amount of Open Source.

14:40 <ADragonDreaming> not enough, really, but...

14:41 <Cepheid> They have been improving as of late, yes.

14:41 <Cepheid> WSL has improved a lot, and as of late, Microsoft has been contributing DirectX-related stuff to Mesa.

14:42 <Cepheid> I'm expecting in the next decade, DirectX may actually be open-sourced.

14:43 <Cepheid> I can't believe I'm saying this, but Microsoft has better software ethics than Apple, these days.

14:43 <ADragonDreaming> I can believe it.

14:44 <Cepheid> I suspect that what's happening is there's a growing group of developers that are pushing for open source in Microsoft.  I know I'd have been pushing for it had I been employed by them all those years ago.

14:44 <Cepheid> Within Microsoft, that is.

14:45 <Cepheid> Outside, there's a lot of push.  But within..

14:45 <Cepheid> Well, investors are under this impression that proprietary/closed-source is better for financial purposes, when it's constantly proven it's actually more trouble than it's worth.

14:46 <Cepheid> Especially in the security sector.

14:47 <Cepheid> Besides the speed in which updates are pushed out to close security holes, open source algorithms for security have the benefit of being tested, prodded, and broken by a much larger base of people than just a select few "experts" employed by the developing company.

14:47 <Cepheid> Also helps root out backdoors.

14:48 <ADragonDreaming> Yeah, but there's also still a "shoot the messenger" approach to security flaws.

14:49 <ADragonDreaming> Which can be partially blamed on section 1201 of the DMCA in the US

14:49 <Cepheid> Yes, and there's also gagging, as well.

14:49 <Cepheid> Disclosure of security problems is often held back by legal stuff.

14:49 <Cepheid> Of course, you also just have general ineptitude too, like refusing to acknowledge a security hole as an actual security hole, and refusing to notify vendors about it.

14:50 * Cepheid coughs. "INTEL."

14:51 <ADragonDreaming> Lawmakers pushing for "legal access" doesn't help either.

14:51 <Cepheid> That discussion has invoked some... problems between me and my dad.

14:51 <RazorSharpFang> I still can't believe there can be security holes in CPUs themselves.

14:52 <ADragonDreaming> "Let's build gaping holes in security so police can get in. Surely it is possible for it to be built so that bad actors won't use those same security holes."

14:52 <Cepheid> Me and my dad don't see eye-to-eye with respect to getting access to the contents of an encrypted phone, even when there might be legitimate reasons to do so.

14:52 <ADragonDreaming> "It's not like the NSA's exploits that they hoarded were used for the most devastating Ransomware attacks ever."

14:53 <ADragonDreaming> Your dad should read Techdirt.

14:53 <Cepheid> RazorSharpFang:  I can believe it relatively easily.  If we can make bugs in software, we can make bugs in the design of CPUs and other such computational components.

14:53 <ADragonDreaming> Isn't Rowhammer an exploit based on manipulating physical adjacency?

14:53 <Cepheid> The problem there is getting my dad to read it, ADragonDreaming.  His problem is that when he gets home from work, he generally doesn't want to do much with computers afterwards, outside of using them for entertainment purposes.

14:54 <ADragonDreaming> The articles are all coffee break sized.

14:54 <Cepheid> Mmm.

14:54 <ADragonDreaming> But yeah.

14:54 <Cepheid> My dad's... difficult to deal with, with respect to a lot of things.

14:55 <Cepheid> My parents always go "You should talk to me if you're distressed/bothered/etc."  But when I do, I usually get a negative reaction from both of them.

14:55 <Cepheid> Especially my dad.

14:56 <ADragonDreaming> I'd probably just gto the point of repeating "If there's a backdoor that the police can use, then the Saudi's will get it too."

14:56 <ADragonDreaming> But that's me.

14:56 <Cepheid> More like, "if there's a backdoor that the police can use, everyone with malicious intent will use it."

14:56 <ADragonDreaming> Yes, but that's too general.

14:56 <Cepheid> Mmhmm.

14:56 <ADragonDreaming> A nebulous other has less impact than a known bad cator.

14:56 <ADragonDreaming> *actor

14:57 <Cepheid> But trying to argue that another country might abuse it isn't gonna work.

14:57 <ADragonDreaming> Not might; will.

14:57 <Cepheid> My dad has a... "not my problem" type stance to things going on in other countries.

14:57 <ADragonDreaming> Nah, they'll abuse it to compromise the security of Canada's people.

14:57 <Cepheid> That could work, yeah.

14:58 <ADragonDreaming> It will literally make government agents less safe.

14:58 <Cepheid> But yeah, trying to discuss things that can, will, or are happening in other countries with him is like talking to a brick wall.

14:58 <Cepheid> He has a "Not my problem" mentality about it.

14:58 <Cepheid> China abusing it's people, working to undermine the Internet, and all sorts of other things?  "Why should I care?  I don't live in China."

14:58 <ADragonDreaming> From an actual National Security angle, "legal access" is an invitation for hostile actors from other countries to harm your own country's people.

14:59 <Cepheid> People getting sick by the hundreds of thousands, and people dying by the thousands in the US?  "Don't concern yourself with what's going on down there."

14:59 <ADragonDreaming> "But they'll spread it here."

14:59 <Cepheid> That's what I try to argue.

14:59 <Cepheid> But nah, he thinks I'm worrying over nothing.

14:59 <ADragonDreaming> "Also, if the US economy goes down in flames, so will ours."

14:59 <Cepheid> He forgets some of my best friends are in the US.

14:59 <ADragonDreaming> "Canada's joined at the hip..."

15:00 <Cepheid> But yeah.

15:00 <Cepheid> Because of stuff like that, there's a reason why I vent in other places rather than to my parents.

15:00 <Cepheid> I just get treated like I'm overreacting, or they simply don't wish to deal with whatever's wrong.

15:02 <Cepheid> In general, it's also why I never talk to them about anything computer-related, either.

15:02 <Cepheid> Either my dad's just not interested because he's not interested in discussing computers after work, or...

15:03 <ADragonDreaming> Your parents need to take some active listening courses; but that would also require them to acknowledge an issue with their behavior.

15:03 <Cepheid> Either of them will just usually go "Uh huh, uh huh, uh huh..." or "Whoosh, over my head!" with a hand motion indicating such.

15:05 <Lumindia> Canada is like a really nice apartment over a meth lab

15:05 <ADragonDreaming> Yeah but there's some wood rot under the wallpaper.

15:05 <Lumindia> still nicer than the meth lab

15:05 <Lumindia> let's be honest. xD

15:05 <Cepheid> I'm gonna be honest, given the things I've learned in the last few years, Canada's not as nice as it's made out to be.

15:06 <Cepheid> Like practically any other country that started as a British colony, or something similar to how things went with the US, there has been, and continues to be, abuse of the native populations.

15:07 <Cepheid> Plus, the mentality of the US in terms of government is starting to make it's way into Canada slowly.

15:08 <Cepheid> Doug Ford has been equated to "Donald Trump Light"

15:09 <ADragonDreaming> I'm of mixed opinions on Trumpists plans to leave. On the one hand, would be nice to see them go. On the other, don't wish to inflict them on others. On the third hand, travel and living in other places could be eye-opening.

15:11 <Cepheid> I can confirm the third one.

15:11 <Cepheid> I've been to the US twice, and to the Netherlands once.  It's opened my eyes a bit.

15:11 <ADragonDreaming> As can I!

15:11 <RazorSharpFang> I'm still of the opinion that the federal government's powers should be limited and more power should be distributed to the state and local governors

15:11 <RazorSharpFang> But maybe that's because I actually like my state and local representatives.

15:11 <ADragonDreaming> Imagine living in Kentucky.

15:16 <Cepheid> All I know is that, some people look at living in the South with disdain.  Especially those who moved from the South.  I have a friend who is from the South, and at some point she and her family moved somewhere north.  She apparently came to realize that the South has a particularly bad reputation, or something of the sort, as she actively worked to get rid of her Southern Drawl.

15:16 <Cepheid> And she doesn't like bringing it up.

15:16 <ADragonDreaming> There are a few reasons

15:17 <ADragonDreaming> A) A large portion of the South held on super hard to Confederate ideologies. I.E. Racism.

15:18 <Cepheid> I never asked the explicit reasons, that's why I said "or something of the sort"

15:18 <Cepheid> Outside of asking her to demonstrate what it sounded like, I didn't inquire much more into the reason behind getting rid of the drawl.  None of my business, really.

15:19 <Cepheid> Though I can make a number of assumptions as to why.

15:22 <Cepheid> ...

15:22 <Cepheid> I'm kind of curious.

15:23 <Cepheid> How in the hell did we get to this particular conversation topic from discussing graphics API support in different OSes?

15:23 <ADragonDreaming> B) There's also a perception of the South as being uneducated. In some cases, this has merit, but mostly due to a lack of focus on good educational policies which is also a problem outside the south.

15:24 <ADragonDreaming> apis -> open source -> security benefits of open source -> assaults on security by government -> problems with government and society

15:25 <Cepheid> Thanks.

15:27 * Cepheid studies for exam on Thursday.

15:27 <Cepheid> Also, this is what was worrying me the other night.  I had forgotten that I had something important coming up, but wasn't sure what.  It hit me shortly after class yesterday.

15:27 <ADragonDreaming> Right. Canada already had a Thanksgiving holiday.

15:28 <Cepheid> Yep.

15:30 <Cepheid> Though I can't find data supporting the claim, I do suspect that the surge in Canada was related to our Thanksgiving.

15:30 <Cepheid> Or, at the least, it has contributed to the surge.

15:30 <ADragonDreaming> I have little doubt.

15:31 <Cepheid> While the backlash from the anti-maskers isn't as bad as it is in the US, we still have isolated groups of such here in Canada.

15:31 <ADragonDreaming> Cowards all.

15:32 <Cepheid> I'm still kind of miffed at my sister and her stupidity.

15:32 <Cepheid> Her argument was "I knew what I had, so..."

15:33 <Cepheid> Hum.  In Ottawa, a large fraction of the cases are among 20-39 year olds.

15:34 <Cepheid> Make that 20-49.  In total, about half the cases are in that range.

15:35 <Cepheid> Aaaand it's going to be a noisy day in the neighborhood.

15:36 * Cepheid heads upstairs to quieter room.

15:40 <Cepheid> First though, food.

15:44 <Cepheid> I don't think I'll be up for MonHan tonight.  Feeling groggy.  I'm not sleeping well as of late.  Not stress, more a combination of a cranial headache, sleeping outside of what my body is currently demanding, and cats.

15:45 <ADragonDreaming> No worries

15:47 <ADragonDreaming> I hunted like 7 HR Great Girros last night because ultraplegia sacs, to work towards the Namielle weapon.

15:47 <Cepheid> Heh.

15:47 <Cepheid> If I do MonHan today, it'll be before 7 PM or so.  More likely though, I'll be going to lay down after studying.  Or maybe even during studying, as studying does not require one to be sitting upright.

15:48 <Cepheid> ... Especially as I took a triptan, which will leave me feeling a bit loopy.

15:53 <Cepheid> *Cepheid walks towards stairs to bedroom, talking*  "If you need me I'll be up-"  *Stops and stares at what's on the stairway.  There Tizzy is, with a clump of fur hanging from her mouth.*  "Mom, c'mere."  - Literally a thing that just happened.

15:54 <Cepheid> Meanwhile, she's also been apparently playing with water, as this morning when I woke up at 5:30 AM, I went downstairs to eat breakfast.  On the landing Tizzy was laying down on, it felt damp.  At first, I thought maybe she had an accident.  But cat urine, as I am told, has a particularly strong and pungent smell.  This had no smell.

15:54 <Cepheid> Turns out Tizzy's from paws were soaking wet.

15:55 <Cepheid> She was laying down in the sphinx pose, waiting for her paws to dry off, and in the process, got the carpet wet.

16:31 <Cepheid> Just depends on the hardware manufacturers to implement the support in the drivers, now.

16:31 <Cepheid> Knowing nVidia, they'll stick to their proprietary API.

16:38 <Cepheid> Hum.

16:38 <Cepheid> Spread Spectrum wireless transmission is WEIRD.

16:39 <Cepheid> Hell, wirelss communication in general seems to be weird.

16:40 <Cepheid> The method I'm researching right now basically uses a sequence of N bits to represent a one or a zero.

17:01 <Cepheid> Meanwhile, spread spectrum is a means by which a signal being transmitted is spread out across multiple frequencies.  A typical form of this is frequency hopping.

17:02 <Cepheid> So, for one bit, frequency A is used.  The next bit, frequency B is used.  Then C, then D, and so on, until it cycles back.

17:02 <Cepheid> This, not surprisingly, introduces all sorts of complexity, because synchronization is required between the sender and receiver, to ensure they're both on the same frequency at a given point in time.

17:03 <Cepheid> I can see how CDMA, combined with this, would work.

18:43 <Cepheid> Feels like the world is crushing me from every angle, and my body is exherting force back to stop it.  At the same time, my stomach is constantly sending signals that I should just keel over and get sick, and I have to work to keep *THAT* down too.

18:50 <Cepheid> The most interesting aspect of this is that there are sensations that I cannot describe, because the terms I want to use would make no sense.

19:53 <NitroTheFurry> But its amazing

19:53 <NitroTheFurry> If you fall in love at least

19:56 <Cepheid> I'm too sensitive to noises, vibrations, and other such things around me, that having someone around constantly would drive me up a wall.  Beyond that, my mental health would be excessively draining upon the other person.  I'll stick to cats and other such cute critters.

19:57 <NitroTheFurry> Well, you dont have to live with them right away, but I do understand what you mean, but actually ones you get a bit more comfortable with them, those noises and vibrations are... not calming but like, reassuring?

19:58 <Cepheid> Thus far, I've lived with my parents for 34 years, and over the 18 years my hearing has returned to normal, I have not gotten used to the noise they make, and I still get driven up a wall over it.

19:59 <Cepheid> I know parents are different from a significant other, but...

20:30 <Cepheid> Ali, based on my expert understanding of software/game development, these things get missed "because humans are imperfect."

20:30 <Cepheid> If we spent time writing a test for every single possible scenario, nothing would ever get done.

20:31 <Cepheid> Because instead of spending time solving a problem, we'd be spending time trying to figure out every possible combination of inputs that could result in a problem.
