00:00 <Fluttershy> Hi everybody!

00:01 <Schism> Cepheid: eh.  Nocturne is in the main room of the apartment.  I COULD bring her into my room, but I'd have to move the work box into the main part, and that would be counterproductive if anything loud (like cooking) is going on.

00:02 <Fluttershy> Huh?

00:02 <Schism> Also hi.

00:03 <Schism> Fluttershy, Nocturne!  Like Adagio, but not smol.

00:04 <Fluttershy> Still, who's Nocturn?

00:04 * Ali flops over Schism bug.

00:04 <Schism> One of my girls.  o3o  Nocturne, Adagio, Pizzicato, Fugue...

00:04 * Schism names her computers.

00:05 * Schism also snugs the Ali, and offers an energy drink.

00:05 <Fluttershy> Oh. You crazy if you named you electronics.

00:05 <Cepheid> ...

00:05 <Cepheid> It's pretty typical among computer users, actually.

00:06 <Schism> Indeed; I'm crazy, but that's not _why_.

00:06 * Ali doesn't do energy drinks.

00:06 <Ali> Last time I had one many many many years ago

00:06 <Ali> I drove myself nuts

00:06 <Fluttershy> The only electronic I've named is my switch, and I named it Breath of the Wild.

00:07 <Schism> Ali: I, um.  might regularly have two or more per day.

00:07 <Cepheid> Especially if you have multiple machines connected to a network, and want to use easy-to-remember names rather than a 4-number identifier(IPv4) or 6-hexadecimal-number identifier(IPv6).

00:07 <Ali> I can't touch the stuff, I vowed them off before they became popular

00:07 <Cepheid> Geezus hells alive Schism how are you still alive?

00:08 <Ali> I had this thing called a Jolt about 15 years ago, maybe longer

00:08 <Cepheid> I can't drink more than one cup of coffee or one energy drink per day.  Doing so causes a variety of problems.

00:08 <Schism> Cepheid: via copious energy drinks.  On Cyber Monday I went through four of them.

00:08 <Ali> Sent me up the wall so hard I wouldn't shut up

00:08 <Ali> That and ten minutes felt like hours

00:08 <Cepheid> From aggression, irritability, to feeling my heart pounding in my ears.

00:08 <Schism> !link https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zKghH10WTB4 < Ali, like this?

00:08 <DerpyBot> I need to ask Twilight about that one.

00:08 <DerpyBot> Twilight told me this video is about Strong Bad Email #91 - Caffeine

00:08 <Fluttershy> Ok, did anyone else watch Final Fantasy 7: Advent Children last night?

00:11 <Fluttershy> Anyone?

00:12 <Schism> Nopers.  Wasn't interested in it when it came out the first time, either.

00:12 <Cepheid> Interesting question, especially for Finwe to consider:  We have over 7 billion people on the planet.  If we placed each person exactly 6 feet apart from one another, how large of a surface for everyone to stand on would be required?

00:13 <Cepheid> Assume 7 billion people for the calculation.

00:13 <Cepheid> Though, I just realized using a square grid setup, that the question is easy to answer.

00:14 <Schism> 3,902 square kilometers, assuming square.

00:14 <Fluttershy> NOPE!!! the answr is 42 billion

00:15 <Fluttershy> 42 billion feet.

00:16 <Cepheid> If you take the square root of 7 billion, you get 83666.003, let's round up so that we don't have a fractional human in the result.  This means, assuming a perfect square, then there are 83667 rows of 83667 people.

00:17 <Cepheid> Multiply one axis by 1.8288 meters.  We get 153010.2096 meters for a single row or column.

00:18 * Fluttershy faint

00:18 <Cepheid> 153 kilometers, thereabouts.  Square that... 23,409 square kilometers.

00:19 <Cepheid> I'm pretty sure Finwe will point out a flaw in my math somewhere.

00:19 <Cepheid> Also, I expect him to try and solve the answer in some sort of ridiculous manner, like in terms of a klein bottle, or a Calabi-Yau manifold.

00:20 <Cepheid> "How can you be so terrible at math and know what those are?"

00:20 <Schism> How did I get... hmmm.

00:20 <Schism> Ah, I see.

00:51 <Cepheid> It's not super-painful, but it feels like it's dry and itchy in my chest, and when I breathe, it feels like there is something scratching lightly but painfully along the trachea.

00:59 <Finwe> Cepheid: Everyone 6 feet apart from each other?

00:59 <Cepheid> Yes, because of social distancing rules and such.

01:00 <Finwe> Meaning that given any two people, the distance between them is exactly six feet?

01:00 <Cepheid> Yes.

01:00 * Schism boils some water. Waits for it to cool down to 191 before making green tea with it.

01:00 <Cepheid> ADragonDreaming, random, off-topic request.  You've heard my voice a lot, so you can confirm something that I am unable to definitively confirm, myself.

01:01 <Finwe> With just two people it's easy, you put the in the end points of a six-foot line.

01:01 <Cepheid> Do you find that my voice has two, distinct levels to it?  When I listen to my voice as I speak, I notice that I have two particularly distinct levels, based on how it feels when I speak in my chest and throat.

01:01 <DerpyBot> New post on Equestria Daily by Sethisto: Say Something Nice About GILDA [ https://tinyurl.com/y897ruta ]

01:01 <Cepheid> A low, deep voice, and a higher-pitched voice.

01:02 <Cepheid> The two are quite distinct to me, sensation-wise.  More rumbling in my chest when I use the lower voice.  Almost non-existent when using the higher voice.

01:02 <Finwe> With three people you put them in the verices of an equilateral triangle.

01:02 <Finwe> *vertices

01:02 <Cepheid> Mmhmm.

01:03 <Schism> I do have those two modes of speaking.  The deeper register, though, is for my phone voice, or when I'm quoting something.

01:03 <Cepheid> Strange I didn't think of it that way at first, given I've been dealing with triangles as of late.

01:03 <Finwe> With four people, you need to put them in the vertices of a tetrahedron.

01:04 <Finwe> With five people, I think you need more dimensions than just three.

01:04 <Cepheid> Schism:  In my case, it goes back and forth I find.  Deeper voice typically for when I'm talking to myself, or giving simple answers or statements to questions asked of me.  Meanwhile, the higher pitch is typically noticed in long conversations, or when I'm full of energy.

01:07 <Cepheid> Finwe:  Yes, but I forgot to include a few details in the initial question, that I followed up with.  Let's assume that N = 7,000,000,000, and that we are placing them on a single, flat plane.  Obviously, the points-on-a-line case is trivial, as is potentially the points-on-a-square-grid case.  Triangle, less so, I think.

01:07 <Finwe> But you said that the distance between any two should be six feet.

01:07 <Cepheid> Any two people in the 7 billion people.

01:08 <Finwe> If you just put them along a line then there are guaranteed to be pairs with distance greater than six feet.

01:08 <Cepheid> ... Oh, right, now I see the issue with what I said.

01:08 <Finwe> At least six feet?

01:08 <Cepheid> Okay, let's change the constraint.  At least six feet.

01:10 *** Quits: RichardMist (User@Pony-153.2m0.38.89.IP) (Quit: Leaving.)

01:11 <Cepheid> Euclidean distance.  The plane we are placing the people on is flat.  It's a question of how much area would be covered by 7 billion people distanced at least 6 feet from one another in various configurations, such as a square grid, triangle grid, etc.

01:13 <Cepheid> Yes.

01:17 <Finwe> Cepheid: You just draw circles of radius 3 around everyone and then pack them so that the circles do not intersect.

01:17 <Cepheid> Mmhmm.

01:17 <Cepheid> That's what I was thinking, yes.

01:17 <Finwe> That does indeed result in a triangular lattice.

01:17 <Schism> I do indeed like those dual blades.

01:18 <Cepheid> And thanks to the nature of triangles, equilateral triangles at that, the points in that lattice will be as densely packed as possible.

01:18 <Ali> Too bad that Z line is short

01:19 <Finwe> I think it's called hexagonal packing.

01:20 <Finwe> "In two dimensional Euclidean space, Joseph Louis Lagrange proved in 1773 that the highest-density lattice arrangement of circles is the hexagonal packing arrangement".

01:23 <Cepheid> Mmm.

01:25 <Cepheid> Why does "Triangular" have a hexagon next to it's name, while "Hexagonal" has a triangle next to it's name?

01:25 <Finwe> Note that triangular and hexagonal have swapped places in the picture.

01:26 * Schism adds some broccoli to this spicy ramen.

01:26 <Finwe> The first row should be Hexagonal, Square, Triangular, Elongated Triangular.

01:30 <Cepheid> I have to admit I am kind of curious as to how exactly hexagonal placement beats triangular placement.  I suspect it has to do with my interpretation of the above quote regarding hexagonal placement.

01:37 <Cepheid> See, from my perspective, when you construct an N-by-M triangular lattice/grid/etc/whatever-the-hell-it-is-called, I don't see hexagons.  I simply see the triangles.  It isn't until hexagons are mentioned that I'll see the hexagons in the structure.

01:37 <Cepheid> Since any circular N-gon can be decomposed into triangles.

01:39 <Cepheid> I'm starting to think that everything I do relating to math is "done the wrong way" and yet despite that, I somehow get the correct results.  And by "done the wrong way" I mean stuff like, doing certain things out of order, explaining through words rather than numbers or formulas, and the like.

02:01 <Cepheid> The last time they tried with Big Blue Button, it crashed under the load of trying to e-proctor just 30 students, and they're using that again this time around, and because exams include students from all course sections, that means 100+ students this time around.

13:40 <Cepheid> 太刀.  tachi.  Now, the reason this is funny to me is because 太 is the kanji for "fat."  It also means "grand; magnificent; excellent."  Meanwhile, 刀 is the kanji for "knife; saber; sword."

13:40 <Cepheid> So, if you translated it by the meaning of the kanji, it becomes either "fat sword" or "grand sword".

15:00 <Finwe> That's quite usual.

15:01 <Cepheid> Less so than say, an MMO or online-only game at launch day.

15:01 <Cepheid> In that situation, the number of logins per second expected is... hard to properly calculate.

15:02 <Cepheid> But a university network, with thousands of students logged in on a daily basis, WITH an expected, explicit upper limit per day, that's a different scenario.

15:02 <Cepheid> But, given our IT department is employed mostly by students..

15:07 * Cyan_Spark is done being distracted by movie, pulls up stock charts

15:07 <Cepheid> Hum, the documentation for the shading rate image extension is a bit... weird to read.

15:09 <Cepheid> "By default, Vulkan will spawn one fragment shader for each pixel covered by a primitive."  Then later, we get "Some portions of the screen may be configured to spawn up to 16 fragment shaders for each pixel, while other portions may use a single fragment shader for a 4x4 block of pixels."

15:10 <Cepheid> Does the latter sentence mean that a block of 4x4 pixels can have 16 fragment shaders spawned for it, one for each pixel in that 4x4 block?  Or does it legitimately mean all 16 fragment shaders will be assigned to 1 pixel?  The latter makes no sense in a computational sense, which means it's probably the former, but it's worded confusingly.

15:10 <Finwe> It could have as many as 16 x 16.

15:11 <Cepheid> I know.

15:11 <Cepheid> It's just the wording of how it's specified is unusual.

15:15 <Cepheid> As for why more than 1 fragment shader per pixel makes no sense, it's because the fragment shader specifies the output to the image buffer.  If you execute 16 fragment shaders for one pixel, there's a chance they'll all output different values to the buffer, which will just overwrite one another, in random order unless synchronization is involved.  And even then, it's a waste.

15:16 <Cepheid> There is one case I can think of where that doesn't apply, though.

15:18 <Cepheid> Where you use say, 15 out of 16 fragment shader invocations to perform different calculations for that one pixel, then write their data out to a shader-global buffer.  Then that last invocation, combined with synchronization of all the other invocations, makes use of the calculated data in that buffer to calculate a final value and push it out.

15:20 <Cepheid> Also, if anyone's wondering what the use case is for such an extension, it's primary use case is in eye tracking and VR.  Human eye, combined with the human brain, is a bit funky when it comes to processing image data, such that as you render further and further from the point the eye is focused on, you can use lower and lower resolution, and the user won't notice.

15:21 <Cepheid> By reducing the resolution in this manner, you can improve performance, as fewer and fewer shader invocations are needed as you render outwards from where the eye is looking.

15:21 <Cepheid> Which helps stuff like VR, which requires high-frequency refresh rates to work well.  60Hz simply isn't enough.  And increasing the refresh rate means requiring more power.

15:23 <Cepheid> What makes the problem of VR worse is that you also have to render the scene twice.

15:23 <Cepheid> Arguably, it's the one area where I can see technologies like SLI being beneficial.

15:23 <Cepheid> Unify the GPU memory, then have each GPU render one eye, from different perspectives.

15:28 <Cepheid> There's a few issues I can see in the setup still, but using one GPU for each eye would definitely fare better than AFR, or rendering a fraction of a screen.

15:30 <Cepheid> Biggest issue being that it's costly as hell.

15:48 <Cepheid> $1,319 CAD for the Valve Index.  I don't trust Occulus given it's association with Facebook.  HTC, not sure.  Any other manufacturers, noooo idea.

15:50 <Cepheid> $1,399 for the HTC Vive Cosmos Elite package.

15:53 <Cepheid> And then, dual-GPU setup is also expensive.  For a pair of modern, high-end GPUs, you're looking at nearly $2,000.  For the highest-end, maybe $3000-$4000.
