00:00 * Schism would offer Ali some smoked salmon and dill, but doesn't think the unicorn's a fan.

00:01 * Ali shrugs, doesn't have fish that often

00:01 * Ali curls around the Schism and yawns.

00:01 <Schism> Then mebbe a regular bagel with smoked salmon, dill, and foodling--wait, no, ignore the lattermost.

00:01 * Schism hugs the Ali, and puts plush Lunas on her.

00:02 <Ali> why are you on top of the food little ling?

00:02 * Ali noms Schism ear

00:03 * Schism is hungry. Though not admittedly so hungry. So she just curls up on the Ali's head.

00:10 * Ali is just perpetual lonely.

00:10 <Cepheid> I need a lobotomy, methinks.

00:10 <Cepheid> Or something to help me stop thinking.

00:54 <ADragonDreaming> a lobotomy is rather drastic.

01:00 <Cepheid> I know.  I'm joking. :P

01:13 <ADragonDreaming> heh

01:17 <DerpyBot> New post on Equestria Daily by Sethisto: Say Something Nice About Apple Bloom [ https://tinyurl.com/y6dzggjc ]

01:23 <ADragonDreaming> She's a cute filly.

01:24 <Schism> Say something nice about Apple Bloom?  Okay.  She's a great singer.  And knows how to break up.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vNNrQBZ5rmM

01:46 <ADragonDreaming> hum. That's interesting. Switch was plugged in but not charging. Now that I've moved it, it charges.

01:47 <ADragonDreaming> I suppose it might have come somewhat unplugged after shifting.

01:47 <Schism> I have that issue with various cords with my phoneish device.  One cord works all the time.  The others are unfortunately loose.

01:49 <ADragonDreaming> hum. That's an interesting thing.

01:49 <ADragonDreaming> The whole "Transfer user data" thing only is available if you haven't already linked your nintendo account to a profile on the new system.

01:50 <ADragonDreaming> Thus I will need a microSD card, it looks like.

01:53 <ADragonDreaming> it looks as though there is not one in the house that is free and clear. I will thus need to go get one this coming week.

01:55 <ADragonDreaming> Tuesday, likely.

01:56 * Finwe reaches the elven city of Suldanessellar.

01:57 * Finwe takes a pause and noms on Ali's tail.

01:58 <ADragonDreaming> reaching endgame of SoA, you are.

02:00 <Finwe> Yup.

02:00 <Finwe> Also reaching bedtime, as it is 4 a.m.

02:00 <Finwe> Good night, everypony.

02:03 <Finwe> !lullaby

02:03 * DerpyBot carries Finwe off to bed

02:03 * DerpyBot tucks Finwe in and hums a lullaby

02:03 <Finwe> !shoo

02:03 * DerpyBot sways from side to side, quietly humming "shoo be doo shoo shoo be doo"

02:04 <PinkieShy> !hug

02:04 <DerpyBot> Hugtiem? :3

02:04 <PinkieShy> yes

02:04 * DerpyBot wraps her front hooves around PinkieShy in a tight embrace

02:04 <PinkieShy> Yaay Derpy hugs Yaaay! :D

02:05 * PinkieShy whispers to DerpyBot how he missed her

02:26 <Schism> I'm not sure if I should start reading this fiction.  Not in the middle of my week.

02:27 <Schism> However, I should suggest that whoever's still here in the morning might want to let Cepheid know that she should read Katalepsis.

02:28 <Cepheid> I am still awake you know.

02:28 <Schism> You were unnervingly grey.

02:28 <Schism> How could I have assumed you were still alive?

02:30 <Cepheid> That only reports activity on IRC I think?

02:30 <Schism> True.

02:31 <Schism> Randomly, swear to freaking Eris, if I don't get an entire week off at the start of February, I will march over to my office and start talking to people.

02:32 <Schism> This is probably more horrifying if you've ever spoken to me.

02:39 * Cepheid goes on a ride around the X4 universe main highway to uncover lots of the map. o3o

02:39 <Schism> Jokes aside, hopefully I do manage to get a full week off at the start of February.  Paid week vacation, no less.

02:47 <Schism> Cepheid:  I have an intrinsic understanding of systems.  This is a really good thing to have in some circumstances.  I can understand how systems operate, how they're manipulated, and most of all, how they break.  I HATE intrinsically broken systems.  They're like hangnails...

02:48 <Schism> When I see a system which is broken, and I have to operate therewithin, I twitch.

02:56 * Cepheid realizes she bought spices and not rare spices. Ah well, there's a station in this sector that'll buy them.

03:17 <DerpyBot> New post on Equestria Daily by Makenshi: Pony OC Music: Niłch'i Poni - Apricity [Chillout] [ https://tinyurl.com/y4q88gu8 ]

03:21 <Cepheid> Yes game, I know I need a captain.  I can't afford one.

03:28 <Cepheid> I should get back into Elite Dangerous.

03:28 <Schism> To sleep I go.  After all, the most broken system of all is myself.

03:28 * Schism rails against herself. Also, provides Cepheid with a mining laser 2.

03:29 <Cepheid> I wonder if player construction will be available on Odyssey.

03:31 <Cepheid> A lot of people asking what'll happen if they kill everyone at bases.

03:42 <Cepheid> I know this is inviting trouble, so let's save.  *Autopilots afterwards and walks away.*

08:50 <ConfusionRift> They never did, and they never will.

08:52 <ConfusionRift> The celebration was nothing but a facade the media used to make us feel better. In the end, the minute that "celebration" ended, we were just once again roaches powering another multi-billion dollar corporation.

08:53 <ConfusionRift> One thing's for sure. Not gonna die for this company. If all goes bad, I'll be staying home, will everyone else is out there cutting their throats. Occurrences and attendance be damned.

08:58 * Ali starts a radstorm

08:58 <Ali> Cause you know, that game didn't need rads just coming from the sky

08:59 * Dappled sends in ghoul hordes in the rad storms too.

08:59 <Ali> I'm doing a Punch Out build, its silly

08:59 <Ali> Have to use the boxing glove

08:59 <ConfusionRift> Game also didn't need to put a Deathclaw so early, even though they give you a tool to deal with it.

09:00 <ConfusionRift> Man, those are the harder ones; the melee builds.

09:00 <Ali> You have to know how to use the minigun else you just spam its ammo away and still have to fight it

09:00 <Ali> ConfusionRift, melee is the most busted build in Fallout 4

09:00 <Ali> Take your melee weapon of choice

09:00 <Ali> Get Blitz and Rooted

09:00 <Dappled> Fisticuff.

09:00 <Ali> And watch everything melt in addition to Ninja giving you TEN TIMES the damage

09:01 <ConfusionRift> Technically, all are, if you know where to invest and where to find what you need.

09:02 * Dappled suffers from feline paralisys. He will surely starve.

09:03 <ConfusionRift> Had a pretty nasty sniper build on the PS4, and a fairly decent batter build.

09:03 <Ali> HOW?  I've tried sniper builds and they just die off by the mid 20s

09:03 <Ali> Since you need to be like 35 JUST to silence anything past a Hunting Rifle

09:04 <Dappled> Obviously you needed to take the V.A.N.S. perk.

09:04 <ConfusionRift> Not if you find weapons with silencers. (shrugs) Unless that changed.

09:05 <ConfusionRift> I don't remember the build, but I wasn't having much issues for most of the game.

09:11 <ConfusionRift> All I remember is messing around with weapon parts and building a nasty rifle outside my perks by just swapping.

09:15 <Dappled> If you strip parts off of an existing weapon you can slot them onto another one without needing the perks right?

09:16 <ConfusionRift> There are perks that increase damage on any long arms (anything that has a stock, and doesn't use anything outside standard ammo). Long range combat perks really just accentuated the damage, and eventually headshots were just poppin'.

09:16 <Ali> ConfusionRift, finding any high level gun with a silencer is rare

09:16 <Ali> Not even Overseer's Guardian comes pre silenced

09:16 <ConfusionRift> It is, it really is.

09:16 <Ali> There's like 5 guns that come pre silenced

09:17 <Ali> The pipe bolt action from Trudy, Deliverer, Tinker Tom Special, and the Spray n Prey.

09:17 <ConfusionRift> So it was more the case of being in a spot the AI got confused to look, or they were obstructed in some way.

09:17 <Ali> or you fart in Corvega and every raider knows you did it

09:18 <Koopz> there's "builds" for Fallout 4?

09:18 <ConfusionRift> Or walk past the high towers and just get owned by a Fat Man through a 1 inch hole the CPU somehow managed to shoot through.

09:18 <ConfusionRift> Yep.

09:18 <Koopz> i just played the game

09:19 <Koopz> and eventually ruined my fun when i got to the DLC island

09:19 <Koopz> where there was this unique chainsaw weapon

09:19 <Koopz> with very high attack rate and stagger chance

09:20 <Koopz> from that point on i pulled out this thing every time i had to fight one of those Mirelurk Queens and they couldn't do anything because they were perma-staggered

09:21 <Koopz> now that was broken

09:21 * Finwe hats on Ali.

09:21 <Ali> Fah Hahbah

09:21 <ConfusionRift> And yes, you can swap parts without needing the perk to build them. So if you find a hunting rifle with a calibrated powerful receiver, you can build a basic one, and put the old receiver on another hunting rifle.

09:22 <Finwe> Ali: Fah Hahbah to you, too.

09:22 * Finwe doffs himself.

09:22 * Finwe also offers some cough tincture in case Fah Hahbah didn't mean anything.

09:23 <ConfusionRift> That's what I did most of the time, because I kept finding hunting rifle with powerful receivers, but where scopeless chopped pistols.

09:24 <ConfusionRift> And switching calibers is not always a good thing.

09:25 * Ali finally gets Rooted 2, now she needs that one more level in Ninja to really one shot things to pieces.

09:26 * Finwe demotes Ali to Rooted 0.

09:26 * Ali baps, she needs that 50% more melee damage

09:27 * Finwe nimbly evades the bap.

09:27 <Ali> I'm dealing 92 damage with a boxing glove~

09:27 <Koopz> It was called "The Harvester" in Far Harbor...

09:28 <Finwe> But it isn't Boxing Day today!

09:31 <Finwe> Oh, and an AirPort Pro card.

09:31 * Dappled starts munching on apple stuff. Tasty tasty apples.

09:31 <AppleDash> I am plannin to make a HPC cluster with my 4 G4s, 4 G5s, and 3 Power Macs (which combined are probably better than the G4s/G5s, but hey!)

09:31 <AppleDash> err, 3 Mac Pros, sorry

09:31 <Finwe> :3

09:34 <Finwe> What kind of Power Macs?

09:34 <Finwe> The best late 2005 model was double-processor dual core 2.5GHz PPC 970MP, eeenope?

09:35 <AppleDash> I don't have the exact specs written down :( But I plan to inventory them tomorrow!

09:36 <Finwe> PowerMac 11,2, I think the model was called.

09:36 <Finwe> G4 is the pre-cheesegrater model, right?

09:37 <AppleDash> Yeah

09:38 <AppleDash> G5 was the cheesegrater that then became the original Mac Pro

09:38 <AppleDash> I know the ones I have are all at least dual processor :D

09:39 <Finwe> G4 PowerMac 3,3 had a dual-processor configuration, 2 x 450 or 500 MHz PPC 7400 (G4).

09:40 <AppleDash> :d

09:40 <AppleDash> https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/311836570183532545/800607423828066344/IMG_20210118_010744.jpg

09:40 <Finwe> And all newer than that, too.

09:40 <AppleDash> Here is the collection :P

09:41 <Finwe> 3,4 had dual 533, 667 or 733 PPC (7400/7410/7450), and 3,5 had dual 800 MHz 7450.

09:42 <Finwe> AppleDash: Is that your bedroom? :3

09:42 <AppleDash> It is my workshop, which exists in my house next to my bedroom :)

09:44 <Finwe> The one in the lower right corner is probably the newest, as the GPU card has two miniDP-ports.

09:45 <Finwe> And the ones with blue plastic are the oldest.

09:45 <Finwe> 6 x G4 and 6 x G5.

09:46 <Finwe> Ah, no, three of the cheesegraters were Mac Pros.

09:47 <Finwe> Those would be the two on the lowest shelf, as the large fan instead of two smallers was first introduced in Mac Pro.

09:50 <AppleDash> Yeah, a couple of them are Pros :p

09:50 <AppleDash> Decent specs too

09:51 <Finwe> So two Mac Pros, two older G4, four newer G4 and four G5 rigs.

09:51 <AppleDash> Yus :D

09:51 <Finwe> Probably what they mean when they say, "Imagine a Beowulf cluster of those."

09:52 <AppleDash> I am planning to build a cluster :)

11:05 <ConfusionRift> Especially the fact that, as you mentioned, you're forced to go there. And going early is really dumb.

11:05 <Ali> Depends on if you're rushing MQ either be choice or by being a new player and only knowing to do the MQ

15:49 <Finwe> Not that either.

15:49 <Finwe> The analogy is from fishing, you know.

15:49 <Finwe> The troll is the lure that is cast into water, and the fisherman is called troller.

15:50 <Finwe> In Internet discussion, the bait message is the troll and whoever writes it is a troller.

15:52 <Cepheid> You're an arse.  You know HB is bothered by gendered terms, especially male terms, and you were intentionally pushing their buttons. :P

17:59 <Cepheid> Man, Hexchat's bugged when it comes to Windows IME.

18:00 <Cepheid> It uses the GTK IME instead, which for some inexplicable reason, appears at the upper-left corner of the window instead of over the textbox.

18:02 <Cepheid> 窓をあけてください。

18:18 <LibrarianofHope> my head is scrambled ahhh

18:19 <Schism> https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/This_Is_Your_Brain_on_Drugs

18:19 <Schism> (Silly as it was, it's kind of iconic these days.)

18:19 <Cepheid> This is one thing I hate about the IME on Windows.

18:19 <Cepheid> The language system strictly keeps track of what language is in use between applications.

18:20 <Cepheid> Thus, if I switch from Hexchat to Firefox, I'll get Japanese, because in Firefox, I'm using Japanese.  But if I switch back to Hexchat, I'll get English.

18:20 <Cepheid> It's... mildly irritating.

18:20 <LibrarianofHope> i wish i was on drugs sometimes, would be having a better time

18:21 <LibrarianofHope> im stupid overwhelmed

18:21 <Cepheid> Oh, it's not that it's switching languages.

18:22 <Cepheid> It's switching input modes in the language.

18:22 <Cepheid> Japanese IME has 5 modes, Hiragana, Full-Width Katakana, Full-Width Alphanumeric, Half-Width Katakana, and Half-Width Alphanumeric.  It tracks which mode it's in between applications.

18:25 <Cepheid> To heck with this, where's my laptop?

18:27 <Cepheid> As someone who takes drugs to deal with certain conditions, I generally don't advocate for it unless it's a truly severe incarnation of said conditions.

18:28 <Cepheid> Some of them can be addictive.

18:31 <Schism> Huh.  Biden wants to shut down the Keystone XL Pipeline.  This may very well make a lot of people up here very happy about what's down there.

18:32 <Schism> Not surprising, though.

18:33 <ADragonDreaming> Biden's presidency is going to be all about putting out fires and trying to patch things up.

18:33 <Schism> This sounds vaguely familiar.  Didn't we have this same situation about, oh, 12 years ago?

18:35 <Cepheid> It's like a cycle, sort of.  Democrats get in, usually have to spend their entire terms fixing things up.  Then Republicans get in, and break everything again.

18:35 <Schism> Hopefully, in this circumstance, the cycle will be broken.

18:35 <ADragonDreaming> 12 years ago I barely had enough personal, emotional, and financial stability to think about anything.

18:35 <ADragonDreaming> Much less the state of the nation.

18:35 <Cepheid> I don't think it will be, Schism.

18:36 <Schism> I was still in Ohio.  So I had a vested interest in the quasi-local government not burning down to ashes...

18:36 <ADragonDreaming> That was a year I did not vote, based upon having not looked at either candidate whatsoever in the lead-up to the presidency.

18:36 <Schism> It's hard to assign any blame to you, Adra, because it felt like everything was melting around.

18:37 <Cepheid> I'm more inclined to believe that what will happen, is that the Republicans will reform themselves, but become insignificant in size compared to before, the Trumpists will form a new party, and the Democrats will stay mostly the same.

18:37 <DerpyBot> New post on Equestria Daily by Sethisto: Dragon Animation - Another Appeal [ https://tinyurl.com/y3p7svu8 ]

18:38 <Cepheid> Because right now there's infighting in the Republican party.  A large fraction of the current party simply doesn't agree with the ideals of the Republican party anymore.

18:38 <Cepheid> So there will likely be a mass exodus of people in that party leaving to create a new party, or a mass purge by someone sensible at the head of the party in a few years time.

18:39 <Cepheid> Also possible that vice versa might happen.  That people who agree with the Republican party ideals leave to create a new party, rather than deal with the existing one.  Or they get purged by another Trumpist taking leadership of the party.

18:40 <Cepheid> From where I'm sitting, it looks as though Trump has turned the two-party battlefield into a three-party one.

18:44 * Cepheid makes a tool to practice telling time.

18:44 <Schism> A systemic revision, similar to Canada's parliamentary system, does look like it might be a good idea, but the problem is that way too many people are opposed to it.  Also, I'm slightly biased in favour of what we have up here for obvious reasons, even if it sucks on occasion.

18:44 <ADragonDreaming> I want ranked voting.

18:44 <ADragonDreaming> If that can somehow be installed in my state, I'll consider it a win.

18:45 <Schism> Same.  And states do have an option to handle voting mechanisms as they see fit, at least locally.

18:45 <ADragonDreaming> Though I'm not sure how establishing Ranked voting would play with the electoral college.

18:46 <ADragonDreaming> Doing away with that would be cool too but I'm kind of on a "one major goal at a time" thing.

18:46 <Schism> It wouldn't be entirely impossible for states to institute ranked voting for local officials, governors, et cetera.  It wouldn't work with the EC: that needs to be abolished outright.

18:46 <Schism> Also, the states most in need of ranked, systematically fair voting are the ones which are least likely to establish it.

18:46 <ADragonDreaming> I do know that I'm going to, forever and always, refuse to state that I am a member of any political party.

18:47 <Schism> You have no imagination.  Declare yourself a member of a party you just made up, get some cards printed, and pass them around when the lockdowns end.

18:47 <Cepheid> Personally I'd like to see a better digital voting system in place.  But the only way that'd happen is if a neutral party, who had representatives from each existing party in it, made the voting software and hardware.  And before it can be used for an election, it has to be authorized by the representative from every party.  The only problem is, that will never happen.

18:48 <ADragonDreaming> I am a firm believer that paper ballots remain the way to go in all cases for the foreseeable future.

18:48 <ADragonDreaming> If for no other reason than digital voting systems are vulnerable to outside interference.

18:48 <Cepheid> Mmm.

18:48 <Cepheid> An alternative way to avoid that would be to use airgapped voting machines.

18:49 <ADragonDreaming> Given the current state of security consciousness, I wouldn't trust it.

18:49 <Cepheid> You can vote at a location, like using a paper ballot, but the machine does not transmit information in any way, shape or form.

18:49 <Schism> Cepheid: That would also require that parties actually _distribute those machines_, and make sure that they can be readily accessible.  Mail-in voting is undesirable to the establishment because it provides a proper illustration of who's voting for whom, and from where.

18:50 <ADragonDreaming> Still going to want a paper-record backup, regardless of what electronic solution is developed.

18:50 <Cepheid> I can think of a number of ways to secure using voting machines, but the problem is that each way I can think of, has it's own problems.

18:50 <Schism> It's a giant [yay] is what we're saying.  Not that stop-gap solutions aren't bad.

18:50 <Cepheid> But then, I get similar problems with paper ballots and mail-in voting.  So the problem is a clustertruck.

18:50 <Schism> Fix things one problem at a time, that seems a good way of going about it.

18:50 <Schism> It's a hydra.

18:51 <ADragonDreaming> There's this to consider as well:

18:51 <ADragonDreaming> https://xkcd.com/1909/

18:51 <Cepheid> Mmm.

18:51 <Schism> That'll work itself out when we figure out how to code storage libraries into diamond.

18:52 <Cepheid> The core of the problem I have is the in-between.  The people in between the voters and the final tabulation of votes.  In every scenario, I can forsee people doing things they aren't supposed to be doing.

18:52 <Cepheid> That is, the counters, the people who deliver mail, etc.

18:52 <Schism> The air-gap solution is useful, but that does open those up to abuse, yes.

18:52 <ADragonDreaming> That always exists, and you can see the effects of it in countries with seriously problematic elections.

18:52 <Cepheid> Mmhmm.

18:53 <Cepheid> It'll always exist.

18:53 <Schism> I seem to recall that a certain Russian politician won with 100% of the vote.

18:53 <ADragonDreaming> Uganda's election just this past couple days, for example, had observers from US and Britain that said there was credible evidence of ballot stuffing, and such.

18:53 <Cepheid> Can't even use an AI to fix the problem, because the AI is a program, which can be finagled with software, hardware methods, and just plain viruses and malware, to bug out or change it's behavior.

18:54 <Cepheid> And of course, we're back to the problem of authorized software.

18:54 <ADragonDreaming> The US, however, has not experienced that occurring despite the risk, even and *especially* in this past election.

18:54 <Schism> As well as the AI being programmed by someone who has a different political view than the rest of the company.

18:54 <Cepheid> There's that, too.

18:54 <Cepheid> Like I said, for software or digital solutions, there needs to be authorization to use it from *ALL* parties.

18:54 <Cepheid> Because if every party can agree to use it, then the software is likely unbiased in any way.

18:54 <ADragonDreaming> Which I think is partly due to just how many people do the counting work, the fact that a large number of them are volunteers, and the rules are long-established with severe penalties for breaking them.

18:54 <Cepheid> But that argument falls apart for one reason.

18:55 <Schism> Company?  How silly of me.  The US isn't a company, despite paying its workers below a living wage, forcing them to eat [yay], and generally being antithetical to human rights.  I mean a COUNTRY.  How silly of me.

18:55 <Cepheid> The representatives who authorize the software?  They may not have the know-how.

18:55 <ADragonDreaming> I.E. in order to commit the fraud on a large scale, they'd have to subvert way too many people.

18:55 <ADragonDreaming> Which is why those attempting to fix elections focus instead on voter suppression.

18:55 <Cepheid> The unfortunate reality of voting software to prevent tampoering, is that the best solution is to use open-source, which itself introduces a whole slew of problems.

18:56 <Cepheid> Because if the entire world can see the software, then when biasing code appears, it WILL be deleted, and the person responsible will be terminated in one way or another.

18:56 <Schism> Adra: Plus, it's something they can do on the fly.  Changing voting boundaries is easier than futzing about with tech they don't know.

18:56 <Schism> Cepheid: Nonbiased code can lead to that result.

18:56 <Cepheid> The problem with open-source though, is that you can see the internals of the software.

18:56 <ADragonDreaming> I will say that under no circumstance should any voting solution that uses the internet for the transfer of votes be used.

18:56 <Cepheid> Which makes it easier to write software that can break it.

18:57 <Cepheid> That said, interestingly this doesn't actually seem to be a problem that happens?

18:57 <Schism> Because the first impression of a human being, when looking at _genuinely_ unbiased code, will be to imagine that it's biased in some way or another.

18:57 <Cepheid> We use open-source software for secure transmission of data on a regular basis, and while leaks do occur, those are typically user error, not software error.

18:57 <Cepheid> Or software abuse through knowledge of the code.

18:58 <Schism> I'm with Adra WRT manual views of voting.  While that will always introduce some error, at least it won't be any more systemic than otherwise, and will probably be less so.

18:59 <Cepheid> ...

18:59 <Cepheid> No matter how many times I recite these times, I don't seem to be getting any faster or better.

18:59 <Cepheid> I still stutter and go "Uhm..."

18:59 <Cepheid> Internal monologue is fine, though.

18:59 <Schism> Another trouble with systemic review.

19:00 <Cepheid> Hmm?

19:00 <Schism> Nothing, nothing.  Anyway, back to work for the Jennifer.

19:00 <ADragonDreaming> internal monologue is usually fine, I think.

19:01 <Cepheid> I can read, I can write(Though I'm better at typing), and I can comprehend.  Speech seems to be the worst part for me by far.

19:01 <ADragonDreaming> Filler words, like "um" don't tend to happen in my own internal monologue, because they exist as a social cue to others, and the internal voice isn't meant for anyone but me.

19:02 <Cepheid> Mmm.

19:02 <Cepheid> Actually, hum, no, I'm getting better with speech.

19:03 <ADragonDreaming> \o/

19:03 <Cepheid> The biggest annoyance between Japanese and English time-telling.

19:03 <Cepheid> AM/PM comes before the time.

19:04 <Cepheid> So it's like, AM 5:30, or PM 5:30.

19:04 <Cepheid> Rather than 5:30 AM, or 5:30 PM.

19:06 <Cepheid> So in order to translate time from English, you have to first look ahead to see whether it's before or after noon.

19:07 <Cepheid> Meanwhile, reading Japanese time is easy, but comprehending it requires having ashort-term memory that lasts more than 1 second.

19:07 <Cepheid> Because you'll hear "gozen" or "gogo" before the time, and then your brain has to both parse the time, and whether it's before or after noon.  Creates problems with comprehension for me.

19:08 <Cepheid> Fortunately, I have no real problems with comprehending the "time" part, that is the 5:30 or 6:30 part, etc.

19:08 <Cepheid> But I usually forget whether it's AM or PM by the time it's uttered.

19:09 <ADragonDreaming> Reasons to switch to 24 hour time-telling.

19:10 <Finwe> Indeed.

19:10 <Finwe> But wait! We already use that.

19:10 <Cepheid> Japan does use it, yes.

19:10 <Cepheid> But TV tends to use 12-hour format.

19:10 <ADragonDreaming> tangentially, I remember it being explained that Sumeria used a base-60 numeral system.

19:11 <ADragonDreaming> And likely because of 60's highly factorable nature.

19:11 * Cepheid is curious as to whether or not there's a pattern for the fun/pun ending of minutes.

19:12 <Cepheid> ichi, san, yon/shi, roku, hachi, jyuu all use "pun".  ni, go, nana/shichi, kyuu all use "fun".  Interestingly I see no real patterns.

19:12 <ADragonDreaming> ah, right. The babylonians are why there are sixty minutes to an hour.

19:12 <Cepheid> Since if ending in "u" was a key detail, then jyuu, kyuu and roku would all have the same ending.  They don't.

19:13 <Cepheid> And if it was consonant-vowels being important, then jyuu and kyuu would STILL share the same ending.

19:13 <Finwe> ADragonDreaming: Yup, 60 = 2² x 3 x 5, a much richer prime decomposition compared to 10 = 2 x 5.

19:13 <ADragonDreaming> I like sixty. Because it can be divided in twain, or divvied thrice, or quartered, or fifthed, or...

19:15 <Finwe> One sixth, one tenth, one twelft, one 15th and so on all integer

19:15 <Cepheid> Finwe, is there a term for a number that can be evenly divided by a range of sequentual numbers?  I mean, 60 can be divided by 1(60), 2(30), 3(20), 4(15), 5(12) and 6(10) evenly.

19:15 <Cepheid> Which is a little unusual to see.

19:16 <Finwe> I haven't heard of any special name for such numbers.

19:16 <Cepheid> Hum.

19:17 <Finwe> A perfect number is one that equals the sum of its divisors, 1 taken into account.

19:17 <ADragonDreaming> https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Superior_highly_composite_number

19:17 <ADragonDreaming> There's that, apparently.

19:18 <Cepheid> Yeah, a highly composite number seems to be the term.

19:18 <Cepheid> It's also called a unitary perfect number.

19:19 <AppleDash> Finwe: Did I already show you my power macs? :P

19:19 <Finwe> AppleDash: A picture thereof, at least.

19:19 <LibrarianofHope> power mac?

19:19 <LibrarianofHope> a mighty burguer?

19:20 <Cepheid> Nah.

19:20 <AppleDash> Aha

19:20 <Cepheid> That was the name for Apple computers before the Mac Minis and Macbooks and all that.

19:20 <AppleDash> I do not remember doing so but I know I showed someone else :P

19:20 <Cepheid> The name is derived from the fact that the PCs use a Power processor.

19:20 <Cepheid> Prior to that, their computers were generally just named "Apple" with some sort of postfix.

19:22 <Finwe> 11:40:30 < AppleDash> https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/311836570183532545/800607423828066344/IMG_20210118_010744.jpg

19:22 <AppleDash> Aha

19:22 <AppleDash> That is the picture!

19:22 <AppleDash> Cepheid: You're forgetting about the Macintoshes :P

19:22 <Cepheid> There were those, yes.

19:22 <Cepheid> I forgot about them.

19:22 <Cepheid> My history of computers is not perfect.

19:25 <Finwe> The computers are Macintoshes, the company is Apple.

19:25 <Cepheid> https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apple_II

19:25 <Finwe> -> e.g. Apple Macintosh II

19:26 <Cepheid> "The Apple II (stylized as apple ][)..." - From Wikipedia directly.

19:28 <Cepheid> Problem #2 with speech:  My mouth and throat are dry as bones.

19:28 <Finwe> Ah, those preceded the Macintoshes.

19:30 <Cepheid> My kingdom for the right to submit typed homework instead of written homework, to save my hand, wrist and arm.

19:30 <Finwe> Good old "let the competitor do the product development" type of business strategy.

19:38 * Cepheid goes off to play a bit of Elite with her new toy for a bit.

19:39 <Finwe> Elite, as Elite, or some of the newer Elites?

19:40 <Cepheid> Elite Dangerous

19:40 <Cepheid> As for toy, it's a HOTAS.

19:40 <Cepheid> I need to get a desk mount for this thing.

19:41 <Finwe> Elite, Frontier: Elite II, Frontier: First Encounters and Elite Dangerous is the whole series, if I'm not forgetting something.

19:43 <Cepheid> I wouldn't mind playing the original and followups for the hell of it.  If my PC could without using a freakin' emulator.

19:47 <Finwe> DOSBox, Vice, UAE or something else is required, I think.

19:47 <Finwe> Unless you have a sufficiently old computer.

19:48 <Finwe> I have an Amiga 500 and a C64.

19:50 <Finwe> The Amiga version of Frontier was among the first ones, if not the first.

20:20 <Finwe> Elite runs quite nicely on FS-UAE.

20:22 <Cepheid> Right, that is definitely going to take a good amount of practice to get used to.

20:27 <Cepheid> You know what I'd love to get my hands on, but won't be able to due to exorbitant cost?

20:27 <Cepheid> A Field Programmable Gate Array.

20:30 <Cepheid> Huh, the Spartan-6 kit/board is only $700.  I was expecting closer to $2,000.

20:31 <LibrarianofHope> heck of a dumb day

20:38 <Cepheid> Tonight... going to bed early.

20:38 <Cepheid> Finally got myself waking up at 7-8 AM again.

21:17 <Schism> I think I'm starting to weird out my coworkers by knowing more about our systems than the people who actually started the project.

21:19 <Cepheid> Probably more a side effect of people not bothering to explore and learn, or read manuals.

21:22 <Schism> Exploring is the big thing.  I poke around systems, I learn things.  Because if you don't poke, how are you even SUPPOSED to learn?

21:23 <Cepheid> Yep.

21:23 <Cepheid> Also, good way to find bugs to report to the devs, who will hate you for it.

21:23 <Schism> Meh.  If the bugs impact our workflow and they don't fix them, we'll hate them more.

21:24 <Schism> Like when a server crash completely obliterates our ability to provide service, LIKE JUST THE OTHER DAY.

22:38 * Lumindia noms pancake

22:38 <Lumindia> so you like that store?

22:38 <Lumindia> lotsa cute stuff for sale

22:59 <Schism> How are people not able to do pricing efficiently?

22:59 <Schism> Customer got 15% off, they want a match to 30%.  Fine, take the original price they were charged, divide by .85, multiply the difference by two, you're done.

23:00 <Schism> Or just take off the difference, even.

23:03 <Lumindia> when I want to get 20%, I just take the main number, remove a digit, then multiply by 2

23:03 <Schism> Well, we have to go by the amount we charge, so we have to divide by the obverse of the original discount.

23:04 <Schism> So if we take 20% off, we then divide by .8.

23:05 <Schism> Then we multiply by 10% to get the remaining discount.

23:15 <LibrarianofHope> you can time travel?

23:16 <LibrarianofHope> but you are not british, or have a fancy car

23:16 <LibrarianofHope> i think

23:17 <Schism> I'm Canadian.  That's British-adjacent, and a lot more British than Jack Harkness ever was.

23:17 <LibrarianofHope> ok  canr argue that

23:17 <DerpyBot> New post on Equestria Daily by Sethisto: Drawfriend Stuff (Pony Art Gallery) #3582 [ https://tinyurl.com/y4wmlrm4 ]

23:17 * LibrarianofHope gives Schism her own TARDIS

23:18 * Schism already has one. It's shaped like a book, and a lot better at going to other universes than a silly police box.

23:19 <LibrarianofHope> i specifically added a rule in my universe about time travel

23:19 <LibrarianofHope> time censure: any attempts to time travel are meet with inmediate destruction by the system of reality

23:20 <LibrarianofHope> i use reality warpers, had to do that to prevent the "why no time travel" question owo

23:21 <Schism> I prefer systems which obviate paradox by the simple measure of converting the one trying to cause one into antimatter.  In very small amounts.

23:22 <LibrarianofHope> same idea in spirit

23:23 <Schism> Alternately, systems like the one in Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality.

23:23 <LibrarianofHope> not familiar with that one

23:23 <LibrarianofHope> the other explanatio i have is my universe is unstable by design

23:23 <LibrarianofHope> time travel would fracture it

23:25 <LibrarianofHope> i do a lot of rule of cool ideas, only make sense by internal logic
