05:56 <RazorSharpFang> Hey Cepheid. It's a public holiday tomorrow, but I may be required to work then anyway, due to a safety incident on-site.

05:56 <Cepheid> Oh fun.

05:57 <RazorSharpFang> Can't talk details, but I'm mentally prepping myself for going to the client tomorrow.

06:00 <Cepheid> My concern is that you somehow had something to do with it, given you had to go and make a debug build of software for a client.  >_>;

06:00 <RazorSharpFang> Ah, no. It's been a long-going issue.

06:02 <RazorSharpFang> I'll be going to test-out the debug build. My hope is that the debug-build will fix the problem that we're aware of that caused the safety issue.

06:03 <Cepheid> Always fun.

06:04 <RazorSharpFang> I have my concerns, I'm trying to put them aside, doing breathing practices etc.

06:06 <Cepheid> Meanwhile, all I can say about myself is that I slept poorly, and my breathing has gotten worse.

06:12 <RazorSharpFang> The clients keep asking for more and more features. Pretty soon they're going to want full ActiveDirectory integration.

06:12 <ConfusionRift> :P

06:12 <RazorSharpFang> Where you launch the app, and it auto logs you in based on the workstation credentials rather than picking your name from a list.

06:13 <Cepheid> Which seems like a poor idea.

06:13 <RazorSharpFang> What makes you say that?

06:15 <Cepheid> Because it makes it hard to identify who was at the workstation and when?

06:15 <RazorSharpFang> Well, right now you can pick whoever you want from the list.

06:15 <RazorSharpFang> "Hmm, yes, today I will be John"

06:16 <Cepheid> True.

06:18 <RazorSharpFang> I'm still calling all artillery stations "Pew Pew"

06:19 <Cepheid> Heh.

06:19 <Cepheid> Pew Pew Le Boom.

06:20 <ConfusionRift> Pew Pew Kaw Chew?

06:20 * ConfusionRift now wishes it was possible to have a catapult that throws trains.

06:22 <Cepheid> Hey, hey Rifty?  Give me 5 minutes.

06:23 <Cepheid> There's a mod I want you to see.

06:23 <RazorSharpFang> I am not looking forward to implementing groups and group-permissions into the client though. That's going to be annoying.

06:23 <ConfusionRift> Ooooh? o_0

06:24 <ConfusionRift> Oh noooo. Group, account, and administrative privilege rules and permissions.

06:24 <Cepheid> https://mods.factorio.com/mod/RenaiTransportation

06:24 <Cepheid> It allows you to set up trampolines to launch trains.

06:24 <Cepheid> And ramps.

06:25 <ConfusionRift> I think i saw this before, but wasn't as smooth as this. Talk about adding chaos into the supply line. :P

06:26 <Cepheid> And yes, if you launch the train into a spot where there's no tracks, the train explodes.

06:26 <Cepheid> As for a catapult?

06:27 <Cepheid> Given that this mod works, a catapult would be possible.

06:27 <ConfusionRift> From what it looks like, it's the same for any item in the line getting tossed.

06:27 * ConfusionRift nods.

06:27 <Cepheid> As for an ACTUAL catapult, Space Exploration has one, of sorts.

06:27 <Cepheid> It's called the Weapon Delivery Platform.

06:27 <Cepheid> You load whatever you want into a weapon capsule, then launch it at a targeted location on the same planet, or another planet.

06:28 <Cepheid> This includes nukes.

06:28 <ConfusionRift> Wait... you can throw items DIRECTLY into other inventories?

06:28 <ConfusionRift> HAH! Freakin' chuck a Fat Man towards my enemies. :P

06:29 <Cepheid> Heh.

06:29 <ConfusionRift> Also, this mod opens the idea of bridges. Which would be glorious if it was implemented in vanilla.

06:30 <ConfusionRift> Same goes for tunnels, but we already discussed that headache. :P

06:33 <Cepheid> Mmhmm.

06:33 <Cepheid> In fact, that's kind of what the whole thing is for.

06:33 <Cepheid> Bridges/Tunnels, only in a ridiculous manner.

06:33 <ConfusionRift> Complicated, but simplified at the same time.

06:34 <Cepheid> Either way, the basic premise of a bridge/tunnel using mod functionality would require something similar.

06:35 <Cepheid> The way the mod does it is actually a bit... klunky.

06:36 <Cepheid> It takes the train, examines all it's attributes, including what it's carrying in the wagons, and then deletes it.  It then creates a flying entity to represent the train and it's wagons.

06:36 <Cepheid> When the animation completes, and the object lands at it's destination, the train is recreated.

06:36 <ConfusionRift> You can see it as it changes spriting before a jump.

06:37 <Cepheid> It's, unfortunately, the only way to do it.

06:38 <Cepheid> Which creates issues for tunnels.

06:38 <Cepheid> Same for bridges.

06:38 <Cepheid> This approach works because no fuel is used when it's in the air, and you don't have to worry about things like acceleration.

06:39 <Cepheid> Even though it looks stupid as hell.

06:39 <ConfusionRift> It's klunky, but I can see why. They basically would store the entity data, and use a temp one for the jump. If it lands, the actual entity is recreated with the stored data. If it fails the jump, play the Tycoon alert with the scrunchy explosion... and delete the entity data. :P

06:40 <ConfusionRift> It's a mix of stupid, funny, and actually functional.

06:40 <Cepheid> More or less.

06:40 <ConfusionRift> Can the train jump "cliffs"?

06:40 <Cepheid> Yeah, it doesn't bother checking for stuff once it's in the air.  Just whether or not it's landed on a railway.

06:42 <Cepheid> A tunnel could be implemented with the same basic idea, but the two problems of note are A)  It wouldn't be able to accelerate or decelerate, and B)  No way to handle fuel consumption.

06:44 <ConfusionRift> Hmmm.

06:46 <Cepheid> https://i.imgur.com/WVqaujl.jpeg

06:47 <Cepheid> Man I am not looking forward to having to re-install that CPU cooler or mine.

06:49 * Cepheid needs a new motherboard, which means uninstalling CPU cooler from old board, then installing it on new board.

06:49 <Cepheid> It's not an easy one to install, but it gets the job done very well.

06:50 <ConfusionRift> Clipped or bolted? ...or a multiple piece one?

06:50 <Cepheid> https://www.bequiet.com/en/cpucooler/1378 Bolted.

06:50 <ConfusionRift> Oh, getting one of the hefty ones.

06:51 <Cepheid> That's the one I have actually.

06:51 <Cepheid> The stock cooler for the 2700X does the job, but good gods is it freakishly loud.

06:52 <Cepheid> It also just does the job barely, even at stock speeds it hits 80-85 when under full load.  At least with that sucker on it, it stops somewhere at around 65-70.

06:53 <Cepheid> In fact, because of the extra headroom, the system auto-OCs itself.

06:54 <ConfusionRift> https://s3-eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/cdn.coolermaster.com/assets/1004/h212blacke_g1-zoom.png

06:54 <Cepheid> That's what you use?

06:54 <ConfusionRift> Yarp.

06:54 <Cepheid> Hey, if it works.

06:55 <ConfusionRift> Cooler Master Hyper 212 Black. It does the job just fine and dandy. Besides, just using a stock i7 8700.

06:55 <Cepheid> But yerp, the motherboard and CPU combination apparently is causing all sorts of problems, which are getting more frequent, so...  Time to replace the motherboard.

06:56 <Cepheid> Gonna switch to one that has support for the Ryzen 5000 series, so I have potential for upgrades later.

06:56 * ConfusionRift nods.

06:57 <Cepheid> I did my research on this board too for support with my current CPU.  Not seeing the tons of reports of problems with it.

06:58 <Cepheid> It's weird though how this problem only manifests when the system is idling.

07:01 <Cepheid> Recycling old news I see, MH Rise JP Twitter account.

07:01 <Cepheid> Was hoping for a new monster reveal for the April update.

07:01 <Cepheid> They just rehashed the information update from last week/weekend.

07:02 <Cepheid> Apex Rathalos, Chameleos, still.  Also being released at the end of April.

07:02 * ConfusionRift was oddly having some fun in the game.

07:03 <Cepheid> Heh.

07:03 <ConfusionRift> They somehow made the heavy bowguns... fun.

07:03 <Cepheid> Really, I couldn't care less if they went back to old-world mechanics, to be honest.  I just want one feature retained.

07:03 <Cepheid> The Wishlist.

07:03 <Cepheid> That thing is a godsend.

07:04 <ConfusionRift> The bows irked me a bit, but got used to it quick.

07:04 <Cepheid> Heh.

07:04 <ConfusionRift> And yes, I found this is indeed classic difficulty.

07:04 <Cepheid> Especially in Hub, yeah.

07:05 <Cepheid> I don't remember the last time I found myself having to be CAREFUL in 1*.

07:05 <ConfusionRift> I fainted once in low rank already. Then again, that was my idiocy, not the game difficulty.

07:06 <ConfusionRift> I should've used a heals instead of going full FTE on that bird.

07:06 <ConfusionRift> I was also still experimenting with the heavy bowgun.

07:07 <Cepheid> FTE?

07:07 <ConfusionRift> As some switchaxers call... wailing or thrashing mode. :P

07:07 <Cepheid> Alas, I have to hold back on playing Rise for a bit.  My usual hunting partner is currently away due to personal family reasons.

07:08 <ConfusionRift> And I'm still in baby steps.

07:08 <Cepheid> I've been playing GU in the meantime, using Ping's Dex as my Wishlist tool.

07:09 <Cepheid> That said it's not as robust on the grounds that it doesn't tell me if I have enough of the items.

07:09 <Cepheid> It just tells me what I NEED.

07:09 <ConfusionRift> Oh yeah, was gonna ask. Is it just me, or did the bowgun's range has increased dramatically in Rise?

07:09 <Cepheid> It's not just you, I think they increased it because it was... notoriously short in World.

07:10 <Cepheid> Like, even old-world games had greater range for the bowguns.

07:10 <ConfusionRift> It forced range hunters to stay close range, which made no sense for a bowgun.

07:10 * ConfusionRift nods.

07:10 <ConfusionRift> Sniping was kind of a thing back then.

07:11 <Cepheid> I mean in World, you were still ranged, but your damage output was seriously crippled if you weren't within melee range of the monster.  Not melee range of attacking the monster, but melee range of being attacked by the monster.

07:11 *** Quits: PinkieShy (coolm@Pony-ck81je.67-212-45-net.sccoast.net) (Connection closed)

07:11 <ConfusionRift> And then... I found some light bowguns can use heavy ammo, at the cost of heavy recoil.

07:11 <Cepheid> Close enough that you could be hit.  Far enough that you could be considered "ranged" and dodge with better precision, but it was still finicky.

07:12 <ConfusionRift> Yep.

07:12 <Cepheid> Mmm, yeah, about the light bowguns using heavy ammo stuff.  Also, some ammos have changed a bit, if I recall.

07:12 * ConfusionRift nods.

07:15 <Cepheid> ...?

07:15 <Cepheid> Uhm..

07:15 *** Joins: Dappled (IceChat9@Pony-dsnf91.ok.cox.net)

07:15 <Cepheid> I can hear the fan on my Switch.

07:15 <ConfusionRift> Slicing ammo does basically melee damage, so it hurts and tears more. I think clusters have more range in terms of distance. Normals still have good range, despite them not being that great. Spread seems to have lighter recoil than before. And no clue what shrapnel does.

07:15 <ConfusionRift> ...the fan?

07:15 * ConfusionRift didn't know it had a fan. ._.

07:15 <Cepheid> It does.

07:15 <Cepheid> It's a small one.

07:16 <Cepheid> But I've never been able to hear it, before.

07:16 <Dappled> Shrapnel is best ammo.

07:16 <ConfusionRift> Guessing it's a frag launcher?

07:17 <Dappled> It's kinda like spread but the minimum distance is farther out. Use it for large monsters that you just want to hit all the time.

07:17 * Cepheid runs off down a path, then spontaneously just disappears.

07:17 <Cepheid> Hum, what was I-  Oh, right.  Shaggy armor.

07:17 <Dappled> It's more like a flak cannon.

07:17 <ConfusionRift> Ooooh.

07:18 * Dappled loves how boingy LBG is now.

07:19 <ConfusionRift> Cepheid: Looking at the old areas... this takes place before Tri, right?

07:19 * ConfusionRift gets his head running with the new structures and stuff.

07:20 <Cepheid> I'd say after.

07:20 <Cepheid> With the old areas, there's stuff that wasn't there before.

07:20 <Cepheid> The ruins and such for example, were never there before.

07:21 <ConfusionRift> But who's to say they weren't taken with time?

07:21 <Cepheid> True.

07:21 <ConfusionRift> The flooded forest is not as flooded as in Tri. If anything, it looks like fresh natural erosion.

07:22 <Cepheid> There is that, and it'd also explain why the deep water isn't there.

07:22 <ConfusionRift> Then again, they speak of it as if it's been like this since forever.

07:22 <Cepheid> Well, they did remove the deep water parts from Tri before.

07:23 <Cepheid> Portable 3rd got rid of swimming, and they removed the deep water sections as a result.

07:23 <Cepheid> Effectively, the Flooded Forest is more a remake of the Portable 3rd version.

07:23 <Cepheid> The Sandy Plains..  I have no idea which version would have "come first" in terms of timeline.

07:24 * Ali flops over the Dappled

07:24 <RazorSharpFang> I have 900 nuclear bombs stored and ready to go whenever. The more bombs you have the safer you are right?

07:24 * Dappled hugs de Ali.

07:24 <Dappled> This is friend ship.

07:24 <ConfusionRift> It still looks like "before" Tri. Considering there were other tribes and people before the current hunter's generation, these could be structures that ancestors left behind.

07:25 * Ali thinks most of her ships have mostly sunk

07:25 <Cepheid> Missing.. 1 scale, 7 shells, 2 prismwings.

07:26 <Cepheid> Ping's Dex has the decency to follow the item box sorting order for listing parts.

07:26 <Cepheid> So finding whether I have enough or not isn't to bad.

07:26 <ConfusionRift> Maybe it was all eaten. Considering there are structures in World as well, who's to say.

07:26 <Cepheid> ConfusionRift:  The core of the problem with timeline stuff is that it seems to also be set after World, given the armor consolidation stuff.

07:28 <Cepheid> But then again, Kamura seems to be "different" from other villages.

07:28 <ConfusionRift> Armor consolidation?

07:28 <Cepheid> No separate armors for blademasters and gunners.

07:28 <Cepheid> Which was introduced and explained in World as "We need to change."

07:29 <Cepheid> Pale Extracts come frooooommmm...

07:29 <ConfusionRift> Ah, yeah. Then again, Kamura seems to be stuck in a "we got a looming problem, and no one can help us" sorta situation. That could force innovation.

07:29 <ConfusionRift> Pale Extract... sounds leechy.

07:29 <Cepheid> Khezus.  And there's a hunt-a-thon in village 5 that provides tons.

07:29 <ConfusionRift> Was right. :P

07:29 <Cepheid> Alas, because I switched to SA in GU, I lack proper armor.

07:30 * Cepheid played a gunner in GU, but is switching to SA. That means new armor.

07:30 <ConfusionRift> And who's to say these armor developments aren't prototypes? (shrugs)

07:32 * Cepheid goes and hunts shaggy.

07:32 <Cepheid> I was hoping we'd see one of the Magalas in Rise.

07:33 <ConfusionRift> Oh, and noticed that the run-sheathing problem is not just bowguns. It's range in general, which includes bows. Alas, they made bowguns more... agile. So, as my cousin retorted, it might be that they did it to compensate for speed. Oh, and the shield on the heavy feels like it actually freakin' works.

07:34 * ConfusionRift found the old shield was useless.

07:35 <Cepheid> To be honest, the shields are kind of funky to work with, without Guard Up.

07:35 <Cepheid> Guard Up makes a LOT of attacks blockable.

07:35 <Cepheid> Otherwise, without it, many attacks will just blast right through anyways.

07:35 <Cepheid> Fatalis is... notorious for that, as I learned.

07:36 <ConfusionRift> Key point being Fatalis. :P

07:36 <Cepheid> It's flamebreath attacks, the deadliest of the bunch, can be blocked without it.

07:36 <Cepheid> But the fireballs, which are just as deadly?

07:36 <Cepheid> They can't be blocked without it.

07:37 <Cepheid> And from what I've seen, yeah, the heavy gun shields aren't the strongest.  You can still block, but you'll definitely take more damage than a SnS, Lance, or CB user.

07:37 <Dappled> Lance is best Shield.

07:37 <Cepheid> Fun note.

07:37 <Cepheid> If you ever manage to get to Fatalis in World, or if World's Fatalis shows up in Rise, complete with flamebreath..

07:37 <Cepheid> Your shield can create a safe area.

07:38 <ConfusionRift> Which... makes sense.

07:38 <Dappled> Considering how often I used Shields in World that would have been excellent to know.

07:38 <Cepheid> Basically, if you shield the flamebreath, it creates a wide arc area behind you that's unaffected.

07:38 <Cepheid> Which could potentially save someone.

07:39 <Cepheid> I would NOT advise trying to get up close and personal in Fatalis' face to block it though in an attempt to keep the entire arena safe.

07:40 <Cepheid> Man that is one thing I miss having from World/Rise, in GU.

07:40 <Cepheid> When you struck a monster, you KNEW.

07:40 <Cepheid> It either made the screen shake, or there was a good hit indicator.

07:40 <Cepheid> Here, all I have to rely on is a sound and a small blood splash.

07:43 <ConfusionRift> Ah, Khezu... haven"t seen it in years.

07:45 <Cepheid> ALso miss those "Part broken!" messages.

07:50 <Cepheid> RIGHT!  I don't have auto-sheathe either!

07:50 * ConfusionRift sees the quest description and chuckles. Then sees the cutscene... this is NOT the ol' Khezu.

07:51 <Dappled> Kunai are your friend if you aren't ranged with Khezu.

07:51 <Cepheid> Mmhmm.

07:51 <Cepheid> Especially when he's on the ceiling.

07:51 <ConfusionRift> She. :P

07:51 <Cepheid> It's the same Khezu, same attacks, same screechiness, same electricity, same jumpiness, same lack of music.

07:51 <ConfusionRift> Also, I got this.

07:52 <Cepheid> I like how what was a bug(?) of sorts became an eventual feature of the monster.

07:53 <Cepheid> Got everything but the shells.  Need 5 more of those.

07:54 <Cepheid> Man, it shows that I've become a better hunter over the last few years.

07:55 <Cepheid> I remember when Shagaru Magala, even the village one, was HARD.

07:59 <Cepheid> Ah, the ole' "Subquest Complete!" theme.

08:03 <Cepheid> Also I was wrong, the screenshake for weapon hits is still there, sort of.  It's only for when you hit a weakpoint, or get a critical hit.

08:04 <Cepheid> Cats, where the hell did you find whetstones in that place?

08:04 * ConfusionRift jumps off his doggo, axes the leech, and down it goes. "Told ya, no biggie."

08:05 <Cepheid> 2 more shells.  One more hunt, then.  Four if I'm unlucky.

08:05 <ConfusionRift> Screenshot that, because that was funny. :P

08:06 <Cepheid> Heh.

08:06 <Cepheid> If you hold the screenshot button, you take a 30-second video clip of the last 30 seconds. :P

08:06 <ConfusionRift> I... didn't know that. Oh well.

08:06 <Cepheid> Now ya do.

08:07 <ConfusionRift> Also, that is 100% the old blader Khezu set.

08:07 <Cepheid> What did you expect?

08:07 <Cepheid> It's the same producer/designer as GU and many of the Mobile MH games.

08:08 <Cepheid> Mobile/Portable.

08:08 <Cepheid> So, FU, Portable 3rd, 4, 4U, and so on.

08:09 <ConfusionRift> I know I know.

08:12 <ConfusionRift> Aaaah, really. Because of one machalite.

08:14 <ConfusionRift> Actually, I'm seeing that a lot here.

08:14 <ConfusionRift> I can't make something because I'm missing 1 of something.

08:14 <Cepheid> Better get hunting then. :P

08:14 <ConfusionRift> So I have to quest again, for this 1 thing. :P

08:15 <ConfusionRift> Can't I just pluck a feather and run? :P

08:15 <Cepheid> Sure, just complete the subquest and retu-  Wait, that doesn't exist in Rise anymore! o3o

08:16 <Dappled> It does in the Rampages.

08:16 <Cepheid> And there are my shells.

08:16 <ConfusionRift> Technically, I can do that in a tour.

08:16 <Cepheid> I can make the Storge armor, now.  Now to get a better weapon.

08:16 <Cepheid> Yeah.

08:17 <ConfusionRift> But might as well quest at that point.

08:17 <Cepheid> You can also just hope a shiny drop works too.

08:22 <Cepheid> Now then... Khezu.

08:22 <Cepheid> Weak to fire, but I have no fire weapons on hand.

08:23 <ConfusionRift> I think poison should help a bit.

08:23 <Cepheid> If I hunt a single glavenus, I can make it's SA.

08:23 <Cepheid> ... Eh, why not?

08:23 <Cepheid> It's just one.

08:24 <Cepheid> I say, as it turns out to be a 6* quest.  Heh.

08:32 <Cepheid> ... Did Glavenus have the ability to dig to an area in World?

08:36 * Dappled doesn't remember it doing that.

08:36 <Cepheid> Hum.

08:36 <Cepheid> Well, it can do that in GU.

08:36 <Cepheid> It digs into the ground and appears in another area.

08:37 <Cepheid> Now then, Khezu for pale extracts..  Got a hunt-a-thon which pits me against 10 of 'em, so..

08:55 <Cepheid> Alas, my body is telling me to stop gaming and do coding.

09:06 <ConfusionRift> I only fought it twice, and saw no digging. Now... in the OLD games, some monsters dig out of an area if the area is too far, and health runs low. Even some that usually don't dig.

09:10 * ConfusionRift kills a Great Baggi with nothing but shrapnel lv1. "Huuuuh."

09:11 <Cepheid> RazorSharpFang:  You been having any issues with self-signed certificate stuff when using dotnet restore?

09:11 <Dappled> High or low rang Baggi?

09:11 <Dappled> rank

09:13 <ConfusionRift> Low, during a tour.

09:18 <Cepheid> Ah, the issue I'm facing is from an update to the NuGet certificates that Arch hasn't pulled in yet.

09:24 <Cepheid> There we go.

09:46 <Cepheid> Bleh, I feel like garbage now.

09:59 <Cepheid> Hum.  A basic tileset.  22.5, 45, 67.5 degree slopes, full tile filled, half-tile filled.

10:01 <Cepheid> For collision detection tiles, it'd be nicer if I could just place composite tiles instead of having to pick one half of a 22.5 degree slope, draw that, then pick the other half, draw that, etc.

10:03 <Cepheid> Especially since that's how many tile-based games worked in the past.

10:15 <Cepheid> Tiled supports "stamps" which are groups of tiles which can be placed.  Not QUITE what I want, but it'll do in a pinch.

10:23 <Cepheid> Man oh man I'm thinking about collision detection again and I remember just how much of an annoyance it is.

10:23 * ConfusionRift nods.

10:24 <Cepheid> Detecting intersections is easy.

10:24 <Cepheid> Resolving them is the complex part.

10:24 <ConfusionRift> You either get rubberbanding, doesn't work as expected, get stuck on region, or detection works the wrong way.

10:27 <Cepheid> See, let's use a typical scenario.  A moving entity, say an enemy or player, walking into a solid object like a floor or wall.

10:27 <Cepheid> You apply the physics, so vertical and horizontal motion from gravity and basic movement.

10:27 <Cepheid> Your entity now intersects the floor or wall.

10:27 <Cepheid> You have to "resolve" this, by moving the entity out of the floor or wall.

10:28 <Cepheid> But the question is, by how much do you move it?  And in which direction?

10:28 <Cepheid> Now, flat floors, flat walls, this is easy.

10:28 <Cepheid> For a floor, you just push it up by however much it's intersecting the floor.  For a wall, you push it out horizontally by however much it's intersecting the wall.]

10:29 <Cepheid> Of course, this doesn't work in every scenario.  You can move an entity so far that it sticks entirely inside a wall, and a new algorithm altogether is needed to remove the entity from the wall, for example.

10:29 <Cepheid> Now, this is the simplest case, and the easiest to work with, but it leads to bland games somewhat.  Think NES Megaman games.

10:29 <Cepheid> They had only square tiles, no slopes.

10:30 <Cepheid> Slopes, are a complex beast.

10:30 * Lumindia looks over at Super Mario Maker 2

10:30 <Cepheid> Oh, right.  NES Mario games had no slopes either.

10:30 <Lumindia> nintendo can't get slopes right in mario games

10:30 <Lumindia> Ceph: SMB3

10:30 <Cepheid> Oh, wait, right.

10:30 <Cepheid> Slopes are a pain in the arse.

10:31 <Cepheid> It seems simple on the outside.  Your entity intersects the sloped floor, so you just need to push it up until it's not intersecting.

10:32 *** Quits: Dappled (IceChat9@Shady.The.Pet.Pony) (Ping timeout: 121 seconds)

10:32 <Cepheid> Hmm.

10:34 * Cepheid brainstorms.

10:44 <Finwe> Good afternoon, everypony.

10:44 <Finwe> Messrs Cepheid and Lumindia; Mlles Filly_Nightmares and Schism.

10:44 * Finwe doffs his hat.

10:44 * Lumindia falls over

10:44 <Cepheid> Finwe.

10:44 * Filly_Nightmares climbs onto Lumindia

10:44 * Lumindia is climbed on by Surry

10:45 * Filly_Nightmares eees and gnaws on Finwe

10:46 * Finwe ruffles Filly_Nightmares.

10:48 <Cepheid> Hum.  The separating axis theorem can be used to determine how much I have to shift a polygon in a given direction to remove it from another polygon.

10:48 * Filly_Nightmares purrs and flap flappies her wingies at Finwe!

10:49 <Cepheid> And the direction by which we shift can be determined by the motion vector of the polygon testing against a solid.

10:49 <Cepheid> If it's moving to the left, we push to the right.  If it's moving to the right, we push to the left.  Same for up and down.

10:50 *** Joins: Dappled (IceChat9@Pony-dsnf91.ok.cox.net)

10:50 <Cepheid> Of course, this isn't a perfect solution either, because I can see edge cases that'd cause problems.

10:52 <Cepheid> Mind, this is with me considering arbitrary orientation of sprites to solids.

10:52 <Cepheid> If I simplify it to a box that's always horizontally and vertically aligned with the cartesian grid, it becomes easier.

10:53 <Cepheid> Which is what I think the game I'm getting inspiration from does.

10:53 <Cepheid> At least, I don't recall any particular enemies that walk along the floors that rotate as they hit a slope or anything of the sort.

10:55 <Cepheid> In any case, the movements need to be done in a set order.  I can't combine vertical and horizontal.  I recall from my attempts to do so that combining vertical and horizontal motion created more problems than it solved.

10:58 * Lumindia boops Surry's snootle gently

10:58 <Lumindia> o vo

10:59 * Cepheid loads up La-Mulana to analyze some stuff.

11:03 *** Quits: ConfusionRift (ConfusionRi@Pony-p69.ofe.132.45.IP) (Quit: Recharging the batteries. Laters! *shutdown*)

11:03 <Cepheid> This game has weird handling of slopes.

11:04 <Cepheid> And collision in general.

11:05 <Cepheid> If an entity touches a slope, it uses the horizontally-center position of the entity to figure out how to place the entity on the slope.  However, if the entity is at the edge of a dropoff, it uses the sides of the entity to determine if the entity should fall or not.

11:06 <Cepheid> Which for slopes makes sense, as it's easy to do.
