02:54 *** Quits: Reia (Reia@TheCowPony) (Quit: Bye)

02:55 <Snapai> What's wrong with this picture. :P

02:55 * Snapai pokes Saerydoth

02:55 * Saerydoth meeps

02:55 <Saerydoth> um

02:55 <Saerydoth> there's nothing about that that wouldn't work, but your network ranges from 192.168.0.1-192.168.254.255.254

02:56 <Saerydoth> maybe you just have a huge LAN

02:56 <Snapai> If it's truly a /16 then shouldn't the broadcast be 192.168.255.255 ?

02:57 <Snapai> Nevermind that using a class C internal address for a class B network is probably a bad idea just because potential for old hardware =P

02:57 <Saerydoth> hm yeah probably

02:57 <Saerydoth> I don't think anything even remotely modern would have an issue with it though

02:57 <Snapai> It either needs to be 192.168.0.0/24, or 172.16.0.0/16 >.>

02:58 <Saerydoth> as long as you kept addresses from 0.1-0.254 you wouldn't have even known something wasn't right though

02:59 <Saerydoth> as long as you didn't accidentally cross into publicly routable IP ranges

02:59 <Snapai> Maybe just coz at one point we had two routers together, one doing 192.168.1 and one doing 192.168.0 and we were trying to fuse them. But that still probably coulda just been 255.255.254.0 =P

02:59 <Snapai> Yeah, I'm procrastinating CCNA homework to investigate how similar stuff works in Linux :p

02:59 <Saerydoth> that could be it, I never checked what you did with yours when they were both here

02:59 * Saerydoth is planning on getting network+ in 2-3 months or so, and then starting CCNA

03:00 <Saerydoth> ack cat aggro

03:00 <Saerydoth> it's a Mab

03:00 <Snapai> CCNA classes are easy if you don't mind web learning. They've got a really nice emulator for the practice work, and the rest is web-based.

03:01 <Saerydoth> I already know most of it

03:01 <Snapai> Well something tried to get 192.168.1.148 in `ip neigh` o.o

03:01 <Snapai> It lists failed =P

03:01 <Saerydoth> the only things I don't know are the cisco ios commands

03:01 <Snapai> It's 90% learning cisco cli

03:01 <Snapai> Which has amazingly good inline help, so anything practical on the exam is super easy.

03:02 <Snapai> Also, a lot of cisco proprietary protocols.

03:02 <Snapai> (though there are implementations of most of them on Linux)

03:03 <Saerydoth> yeah I know the Linux syntaxes

03:03 <Saerydoth> I've finally implemented qos that makes lag on my network impossible

03:03 <Saerydoth> even with 20 torrents going at once

03:03 <Saerydoth> still no latency in games

03:03 <Snapai> I wanna figure out how to set up ipv6 on my little router. The last time I tried it, it shut down my entire network somehow :S

03:05 <Saerydoth> ipv6 security is weird.  With ipv4 you keep your network secure by just using nat.  With ipv6 all ip addresses are routable so it has extra security stuff that's really odd

03:05 *** Quits: wobniaR (wobniaR@Monoshy.Hydra.Fighter.64) (Quit: wuz 🅿️🅾️🅿️🅿️ℹ️🆖 jim🅱️🅾️)

03:06 <Saerydoth> Mab still acts like a kitten sometimes, she doesn't show her age at all

03:06 <Saerydoth> same with Greykitty actually

03:06 <Snapai> ipv6 you have to actually firewall.

03:06 <Snapai> Rather than relying on NAT to behave like a firewall

03:06 <Snapai> Your cats outlived mine. Course, they are younger. :p

03:07 <Saerydoth> Mab is 1 year younger than Marty was, Greykitty is 2 years younger

03:07 <Saerydoth> she is turning 11, Greykitty is turning 10

03:07 <Saerydoth> realistically they should both live to 20

03:07 <Snapai> Yeah and they probably don't suffer injection-site cancer. :p

03:07 <Saerydoth> what caused the cancer?

03:08 <Saerydoth> it probably helps that neither of them are purebreed or from breeding attempts

03:09 *** Joins: Snapai_ (Snapai@Pony-alnp7f.rlghnc.sbcglobal.net)

03:12 <Snapai> ipv6 is still being rolled out

03:12 <Jackie> I still like using ipv4

03:13 <Saerydoth> I'm good with ipv6 for internet but I see no reason to stop using ipv4 for my LAN, it's simpler and works fine for that

03:13 *** Joins: Mike_Coltfield (Larscis@colt.in.the.rain)

03:13 *** ChanServ sets mode: +o Mike_Coltfield

03:14 <Snapai> Well, my ISP gives me a /64

03:14 <Snapai> Which means I have enough addresses to fit the entire public ipv4 internet space SQUARED in my ipv6 address space :p

03:15 <DerpyBot> New post on Equestria Daily by Sethisto:  Fluttershy plays TJOC:R [ http://tinyurl.com/jnhxf6v ]

03:15 <Jackie> My socket code needs IPV4

03:16 <Snapai> There're 4294 million ipv4 addresses.

03:17 <Snapai> Whereas there are 18,446,744,073,709,551,616 address spaces the size of mine in ipv6, each containing an equal number of addresses, if I've done my math right.

03:17 <Snapai> The ipv6 address space is roughly equivalent to the number of grains of sand on earth.

03:17 *** Tempo-AFK is now known as Tempo

03:18 <Jackie> IPV6 addresses look cryptic

03:18 <Snapai> It's mostly that they put it in hex, instead of dotted decimal.

03:18 <Jackie> IPV4 uses an 8-bit unsigned integer

03:18 <Jackie> Not sure with IPV6

03:19 *** Quits: The_Nostalgia_Mare (Nossy@Pony-plvmk4.au40.oqg9.0342.2601.IP) (Quit: I do talk but I nom. o3o)

03:19 <Jackie> Like 0-255

03:19 <Snapai> 8-bits is two hex characters.

03:19 <Snapai> 00-FF

03:19 <Jackie> DNS addresses are just addresses that hide the ipv4 ips

03:20 <Snapai> You can represent an IPv4 address in hex if you want. C0:A8:00:01 is the hex representation of 192.168.0.1

03:21 <Jackie> Some hostnames in IRC are in hex

03:21 <Snapai> They use hex for ipv6 because they're already absurdly long, they'd be insane in dotted decimal.

03:22 <Snapai> For me, google.com resolves to 216.58.218.14 ipv4, and 2607:f8b0:4002:806::200e ipv6

03:23 <Jackie> It's funny how my browser accepts IPV6

03:23 <Snapai> ipv6's usually contain a fair number of zeros, so they're abbreviated for that reason. Leading 0's in quads are truncated, and the largest range of solid zeros is completely removed.

03:24 <Snapai> So that's actually 2607:f8b0:4002:0806:0000:0000:0000:200e

03:25 <Snapai> Which in dotted decimal would be (using the same 0-65535 16-bit grouping): 9735.63664.16386.2054.0.0.0.8206

03:29 <Snapai> Or, using the same 8-bit dotted decimal groupings as ipv4: 38.7.248.176.64.2.8.6.0.0.0.0.0.0.32.14

03:31 <Snapai> But yeah. They built APIPA into ipv6, and allow interfaces to talk with their link-local ipv6 address regardless of if they've gotten assigned another one as well.

03:43 <Twilight`Sparkle> There is a specific point in games of epic scope where the primary antagonist achieves a significant coup.

03:43 <Twilight`Sparkle> They actually get their hands on the ancient technology/magic/etc. that they've been after, and get all that power they wanted...

03:43 <Twilight`Sparkle> I find this point delicious.

03:44 <Twilight`Sparkle> Because it also starts the process of the complete dismantling of everything they've ever worked for.

03:50 <Saerydoth> I don't use DSL

04:02 <Saerydoth> it jumped up quite a bit after time warner took over, the old ISP was basically a sacm

04:02 <Snapai> They're working on offering ftth here, Charter calls it Spectrum

04:03 <Snapai> But I'll still be using coax at the apartment.

04:36 <Snapai> Saerydoth, ever use Quagga or BIRD?

04:36 <Saerydoth> nope

04:37 <Snapai> I mean, I don't see any reason to on a home system, otehr than to play and experiment, since those are routing protocol daemon.

21:41 <Cepheid> It's useful for teaching, and cases where you're sorting a very small number of items.  Like less than a cache line worth.

21:42 <Cepheid> Because all of the items, presuming they're packed into an array, will be densely packed and placed in a cache line upon a cache miss to the first element.  So any small sorting algorithm like bubblesort will outperform algorithms that are designed to work on larger sets.
