00:18 <Thelema5> The_Nostalgia_Mare, how was it?

00:18 <Thelema5> Looked awful

00:19 <The_Nostalgia_Mare> Funny enough....

00:19 <The_Nostalgia_Mare> Its pretty good.

00:21 <FruitNibbler> I have an idea about VR

00:21 <FruitNibbler> Watching anyone play VR on youtube is nauseating

00:21 <Thelema5> Huh

00:22 <FruitNibbler> Just because it all moves not as your inner ear does

00:22 <Cepheid> FruitNibbler:  I've not had any problems with it.

00:22 <FruitNibbler> I mean watching their 1st person view

00:23 <FruitNibbler> Specifically in racing one could offset the recording view to the passenger side of the car and use the youtube 3D function so the viewer could look around too

00:23 <FruitNibbler> That would have been a next step

00:24 <FruitNibbler> Cepheid, I don't have that nauseating feeling when /I/ use VR, but when I watch a perspective of /someone elese's/ VR it is pretty darn headachey

00:25 <Cepheid> Huh.

00:25 <FruitNibbler> I mean VR is rendering a spherical image already for the goggles, may as well just parse that as video feed and take advantage of youtube's 3D view

00:26 <Cepheid> Except it's not rendering the whole sphere.

00:26 <Cepheid> It's only rendering a fragment of that sphere.  A bounded region specified by the direction of the goggles according to the various sensors.

00:28 <Cepheid> It *IS* possible to do what you're suggesting, it's just it'd put more strain on the hardware rendering the game.

00:28 <Cepheid> In a few graphics card generations it'll be viable.

00:28 <Cepheid> It'll also increase the bandwidth required by the streamer.

00:29 * Cepheid puts "1 AU to KM" in Google. Gets "1 AU = 1.496e8" "... That's real helpful, Google." </Sarcasm>

00:33 <FruitNibbler> Cepheid, there is a "sarcastamark" being used widely

00:36 <Thelema5> Tomorrow marks the end of my second week with my new employer... I'm starting to feel a bit more confident about everything, as if the job might work out okay.  This is of course following two weeks of constant toil and stress.  I'll be really hurt now if I get terminated because I've finally started opening up to the idea of it working out.

01:01 <DerpyBot> New post on Equestria Daily by Calpain: Comic: Reliance / Aftermath / Sable 83 / Yourself 240 / Rocket Science [ http://tinyurl.com/y88yhm96 ]

01:07 <Cepheid> Finwe, a math-related question for you.  Just a simple yes or no will suffice for an answer:  I have a vector represented as a pair of mixed units, so for example:  x = 30km, 280m, 32cm.  y = 15km, 200m, 64cm.  Is there a way to calculate the magnitude while these units are mixed in such a way? (IE:  I can't convert the centimeters to meters, or meters to kilometers and vice versa.)

01:09 <Cepheid> At this point I'm starting to think an arbitrary precision library may be a better approach for this problem.  That, or just scale things down.

01:11 <Cepheid> Also thinking that I'm overthinking this, now that I examine what I just wrote.

01:19 *** Quits: SunsetShimmer (DJPon3IsHer@DJ.Wub.Wub) (Ping timeout: 121 seconds)

01:23 <Finwe> A pair of mixed units?

01:23 <Cepheid> Think x/y pairs, each using measurements that are mixed.

01:24 <Cepheid> So for example, one of the pairs is 30km,200m,32cm, while the other is 40km/100m/16cm.

01:24 <Finwe> If you know that they're ordered like that, yes.

01:25 <Finwe> I assume that we're speaking of Euclidean length.

01:25 <Cepheid> Yes.

01:26 <Cepheid> The issue I face is that I have limited accuracy for integers, and I want to use extremely large scales.  To use these scales, I have to break the numbers down into multiple parts.

01:26 <Cepheid> Though I guess I could just create a faux 128-bit integer by creating a structure that stores two 64-bit integers and performs math on that.

01:48 <Cepheid> The problem is, I'm using it as an example of the problem I'm trying to solve.  If you want something a bit more suited to my problem, try astronomical units scale.  So for example, x = 1au, 250000000km, 350m, 15cm, y = 2au, 180000000km, 100m, 10cm.  You convert these to centimeters, meters, kilometers, you immediately exceed the accuracy of a float.  You use a double, fine.  You go to calculate z^2 = x^2 + y^2.  Well, x^2 and

01:48 <Cepheid> y^2 exceed the accuracy of double in this case.  It'd be easier if the magnitude could be calculated in separate parts.  Calculate the magnitude for the au, then the kilometers, then the meters, then the centimeters, etc.  What I'm asking for is probably ridiculous, though.

01:48 <Ali> Geebus :P

01:49 <RazorSharpFang> Cepheid, Just use arbitrary precision floats.

01:49 <Cepheid> That's what I was thinking, yes.

01:50 <RazorSharpFang> I think there's arbitrary precision integers for all platforms/languages, but not so sure about floats.

01:50 <Cepheid> Definitely for floats.

01:50 <Cepheid> But integers may be faster.

01:51 * Ali doesn't even understand the topic!

01:51 <Cepheid> Truth told, I think I'm also just being excessive.

01:51 <RazorSharpFang> I just think of them as classes that encapsulate your native formats in order to be able to leverage them to store numbers outside of their limitations

05:27 <Thelema5> Me either

05:30 * Ali sneaks up on Princess-Luna

05:30 <Cepheid> I have found a truly absurd way to solve my problem.

05:33 <Cepheid> It reduces accuracy for calculations by a small margin, but not enough to be noticeable.  And the math I wanted was mostly to be used for either A)  Showing how far away something is, or B)  AI determining if it should use the faster travel method or not to approach something distant.  So it works either way.

05:37 <Cepheid> The fact that it works actually distresses me a bit.

05:40 <RazorSharpFang> Is it something like approximating the log(base10) of a number by counting the digits?

05:41 <Cepheid> Not quite.

05:42 <Cepheid> It's... tricky to explain, but involves stupid math.

05:44 <Cepheid> I take the X and Y delta between two points A and B.  I divide the deltas by the square root of the largest possible signed value of the data type that X and Y are.  I then square the deltas, add them, calculate square root, and then multiply the result by the earlier square root of the data type.  It prevents overflow/NaN at the cost of reduced accuracy, but the result is "good enough" for the purposes I need.

06:08 <Cepheid> Really it's the same process, actually.

06:08 <Cepheid> The only difference is instead of using the square root of 2^63 - 1, for my current testing, I just divide by AU.

06:08 <Cepheid> Either way, the value is constant, so..

06:09 <Cepheid> If anything, using the smaller value increases the accuracy slightly.

06:10 <Cepheid> Increases the chance of an overflow, but if I keep my coordinates below a certain value, which I can calculate, it shouldn't overflow.

07:31 <Cepheid> Okay, that's cool.

07:31 <Cepheid> So, through data mining, players have found various chalice dungeon glyphs that lead to unused bosses in the game.

07:31 <Cepheid> Among other things.

07:32 <Cepheid> Alas, I cannot test these glyphs myself.

07:32 <Cepheid> However, "sikgc3sm" is one, and leads to an unused variant of the true final boss.  Another is "arkhv2vs" which leads to an unused, unfinished boss arena with an unused boss.

07:33 <Cepheid> In either case, the only way to leave is to fall to one's death.

07:33 <Cepheid> By leaving the area's visible bounds.

07:34 <Cepheid> There's other glyphs as well, but it's advised before doing *ANY* of them to make a backup of your save, somehow.

07:35 <Cepheid> As some of the dungeons outright lack a way to leave.

21:24 * Cepheid awakens.

21:31 <Tirek> Welcome to awake

21:31 * Schism notes this to Cepheid. https://www.therecord.com/news-story/8026671-more-work-needed-to-reduce-cat-overpopulation-in-canada-report/ - "Good news overall..."

21:31 <Cepheid> Princess-Luna, Lumin:  That's what happens when reviewers are biased.

21:32 <Tirek> I have come out of hiding to share this image

21:32 <Tirek> https://68.media.tumblr.com/9669382554998b03326185379809b943/tumblr_p1ensnLfY71rd467bo1_1280.jpg

21:32 <Tirek> It is adorable.

21:32 <Cepheid> Schism:  It's a sad thing, but that is the reality of pets in North America, not just cats.

21:32 <Cepheid> So many abandoned cats, dogs, bunnies and clownfish.

21:33 <Schism> Indeed.  Though many consider cats (and bunnies, I suppose) much more 'disposable' than dogs.  Which is sick.

21:33 <Cepheid> Estimated 9.3 million cats.  An estimated 36 million or so people live in Canada.

21:33 <Cepheid> That's less than one cat a person.

21:33 <Cepheid> What the hell?

21:35 <Cepheid> Meanwhile, regarding cats...  I've decided that if I see that orange cat outside in the freezing cold at night, it's coming indoors.  My mother agrees with me on this matter.

21:36 * Schism NODS.

21:36 <Schism> Oh.  Cepheid.  When you speak with your doctors, make sure that if they're using Apple products, they MAKE SURE of the medication name they write for you.

21:37 <Cepheid> Oh no.  What medication name is being autocorrected?

21:38 <Schism> A lot of them.

21:39 <Cepheid> As far as I know, my doctors use Windows tablets.

21:44 * Schism nodnods, "And the hospital at least uses Citrix on Windows boxen."

21:45 * Cepheid tests some code and launches Schism 25.10 AU away at a speed of 5 AU a second.

21:47 <Cepheid> 5 AU/second is... Almost 2,500 times the speed of light. >.>

21:50 <Cepheid> I'm solving the tunneling problem by... Explaining it away as travelling through some sort of interdimensional tunnel.

21:51 <Cepheid> So space ships travelling at these insane speeds won't be able to collide with stuff.

21:52 <Schism> Or at least, the odds are infinitesemal.

21:53 <Cepheid> Eh.  You'd be surprised.

21:53 <Cepheid> I've played Elite Dangerous, and nearly flew into a star on numerous accounts.  And planets.

21:54 <Schism> Oh, I meant in that hyperspace case.  Space is mostly empty, but there's still a lot of stuff scattered throughout to snag the unwary.

21:54 <Cepheid> Aye.

21:54 <Cepheid> The tunneling issue I mentioned is an issue related to simulating movement over long distances.

21:55 <Cepheid> When you apply a movement vector to an object, it's an instantaneous displacement.

21:55 <Cepheid> Problem is, since each "step" of the simulation is discrete instead of continuous, there's no easy way around this detail.

21:57 <Cepheid> You can do a few different things to alleviate it.  ALl with their own problems.  You can decrease the period between each step.  This of course increases processing time, since the simulation is now being processed at N ticks per second, instead of M ticks a second, where M < N.

21:58 <Cepheid> You can just ignore it.  But then you run the risk of suffering the tunneling problem wherein an object can potentially go through walls, people, planets, without having any effect on them or interacting with them.

22:00 <Cepheid> And, the preferred approach, perform a colission check using the object's position and it's movement vector.  If anything intersects the vector, the object, and it's new position, there's a colission.  It's the simplest of the "preferred approaches" though, and has it's issues.

22:01 <DerpyBot> New post on Equestria Daily by Sethisto: Star Crossed Twilight Sparkle - EG Short Now on Youtube [ http://tinyurl.com/ybjr8s64 ]

22:02 <Cepheid> The final approach is just a modification of the previous approach.  Only when an intersection is detected, you calculate the time object A would have intersected with object B, or orbject B's path, and place the objects where they would be at that moment in time, and determine if they would have collided or not.

22:02 <Cepheid> It's a bit more complicated to perform, though.  In any case, I'd rather not deal with colissions with such high speeds as 5 AU/second.

22:03 <Cepheid> Despite the vastness of the simulation I'm planning, we all know that there'd be those players who just don't pay attention and keep slamming into Uranus.

22:07 <Schism> But of course.  Or those who don't want to pay attention.

22:08 <Schism> I want to say that you could cut back on granularity for higher speeds.

22:09 <Cepheid> Hmm?  What do you mean?

22:09 <Cepheid> I'm just using 5 AU/sec.  The speed will go anywhere between 0 and 5 AU/sec.

22:10 <Cepheid> I'm thinking of liming the speed to 5 AU/sec maximum, given that at that speed, you could cross our solar system in about 12-15 seconds.

22:13 <Schism> Nevermind, I was thinking of something a bit different there, sorry.  But mm, makes sense there.  At least, for in-system speeds.

22:13 <Cepheid> Er, limiting*

22:13 <Cepheid> Inter-system will be done by warp gates.

22:14 <Cepheid> I am not going to figure out how I can fit multiple solar systems into the range of various computer data types without using arbitrary precision mathematics.

22:15 <Cepheid> I spent at least six hours figuring out how to get away with calculating Euclidean distances without causing an overflow using the data types available on modern PCs.

22:24 <Cepheid> I'm gonna spend today doing design work, I think, instead of coding.

22:39 <DerpyBot> I need to ask Twilight about that one.

22:41 <Schism> Om nom banana.

22:42 <Schism> !link https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WVz8rvIl_vY > Eeee.

22:42 <DerpyBot> Twilight told me this video is about Juvenile bat squeaks while being petted.

22:43 <Cepheid> So, our neighbors took in a new cat, right?

22:43 <Cepheid> Well, I can see the new cat through their dining room window, with their other cat.

22:43 <Cepheid> The two are licking one another aggressively.

22:43 <Schism> Hmm.  Spitfire and Tizzy aren't around to look at them, I take it.

22:44 <Cepheid> Nope.

22:44 <Cepheid> Not even sure they'd notice or care.

22:44 <Schism> Well, considering how they react to Naranja...

22:44 <Cepheid> That cat in particular sits right up against the patio door.

22:45 <Cepheid> They're less than a couple feet apart, separated by sturdy glass.

22:45 <Fn> I changed my robes wthile having fever

22:45 <Cepheid> That's why they react the way they do.

22:45 <Fn> Man that was challenging

22:45 <Schism> Cepheid: Somewhat more akin to an invasion then.

22:45 <Fn> Like the hands shook so violently I almost ripped my clothes

22:45 <Cepheid> If you're out of it that badly, Fn, then I'd argue you have the flu, because that's how I felt when I caught the flu a few years back and I felt terrible.

22:45 <Cepheid> I could barely stand or move around.

22:46 <Cepheid> Schism:  More or less.

22:46 <Fn> Yes it is a flu my sister's friend brought me

22:46 <Cepheid> Our cats reaction is to try and pounce the orange cat, and end up slamming into glass for their efforts.

22:46 <Fn> Because that was the last contact

22:46 <Schism> Fn: Ewww.  Lie down and drink a lot more fluids.

22:46 <Cepheid> The cat's familiar with glass, though, as he doesn't react to their attempts to attack.

22:46 <Cepheid> But yes, Fn, lay down, drink fluids, and rest.

22:47 <Cepheid> And some further advice, if you start "feeling fine" so to speak, don't go doing anything for another day or two at least.

22:47 <Fn> I am huddled around a sealed water bottle with hot water in it and dressed like I am on a ski resort and under the blanky too

22:47 <Cepheid> Nothing like thinking you feel fine, then go off to do chores or work, and suddenly you relapse and you're confined to bed for another week.

22:47 <Fn> I know that effect

22:47 <Schism> Last time I was shaking so hard that it hurt my muscles was when I was in the hospital for DKA.

22:48 <Fn> What's DKA?

22:48 <Schism> Diabetic ketoacidosis.  Which also involves its share of shaking, nausea, chills, et cetera, but probably isn't your thing.

22:49 <Fn> Oh my. That's a harsh condition

22:49 <Schism> It is, yes.

22:49 <Cepheid> I've never encountered it, myself.

22:49 <Cepheid> Diabetic ketoacidosis is when your blood sugar drops excessively low, right?

22:50 <Schism> The contrary.

22:50 <Cepheid> Extremely high, then.

22:50 <Fn> It's when your body can't metabolise the sugars, and instead burns fats. Which produces ketones and makes your blood acidic.

22:50 <Fn> Hence the name.

22:50 <Cepheid> Yeah, see, that's what I thought my nausea was the other night.  But like I said, at the time I was suffering the nausea, my blood-sugar was 11.9.

22:51 <Cepheid> And given I've had it go up to ~20 or so when I consume a lot of sweets..

22:51 <Fn> Schism, ever considered training an anaerobic breathing capacity to have a bigger margin?

22:51 <Schism> Not... really?

22:51 <Schism> Cepheid: But so long as it's not for an extended period of time, not likely to cause DKA effects.

22:51 <Cepheid> No, the strangest thing I've dealt with regarding my blood-sugar at all as of recently was during the period before my last exam.

22:52 <Fn> (the breath-hold divers are exceptionally good at dealing with ketones without getting ketoacidosis when they hold their breath for extreme lengths of time)

22:52 <Cepheid> I started getting the stomach pains as usually indicated with low or high blood-sugar(Or perhaps just drastic changes in blood-sugar?), but on top of that, a new symptom.  Excessive dizziness and weakness.

22:52 <Fn> Fun fact: one extended breath-hold dive may make a swimmer up to 6 kg lighter (far burned)

22:52 <Cepheid> I felt like I was going to fall over.

22:52 <Schism> Fn: Ah... not quite the same thing.  We're talking about being at 30+ in blood sugar for days.

22:53 <Fn> Not trying to be a snarky pants here, Schism. Your body is your and your doctor knows better.

22:53 <Schism> Nah, I know what you mean.  Different stuff, though, I'm a Type-1 diabetic.

22:53 <Fn> Oh, sorry.

22:54 <Cepheid> Schism:  Sweet geezus.  Even I've never gone above 30.  I've never seen it go above 21.  It usually re-asserts itself to 10-11 within a couple of hours.

22:54 <Schism> Yeah, let's just say that 30 is hospitalization time.

22:55 <Cepheid> What the hell were you eating those days?

22:55 <Cepheid> Cupfuls of sugar?

22:55 <Cepheid> Jars of honey?

22:55 <Cepheid> ... Corn syrup?

22:55 <Schism> No, this is what happens when I don't take enough insulin and let it build up.

22:55 <Schism> Or forget to take the ultralente.

22:56 <Cepheid> Ah.  Yeah, I take metformin.  That said, my pancreas still works to degree as well, so..

22:56 <Schism> Or when I was first diagnosed.  Interestingly, at that point I was throwing up nonstop, and my folks thought the best way to deal with it was to give me orange juice.

22:56 <Cepheid> I've been controlling my sugar as best as I can, too.  I've switched sugars out for spicy foods and sausages.

22:56 <Fn> I know capsaicin has a knock-down effect on sugar levels. A documented phenomenon (in type 2 diabetes only though), but still not understood at all

22:57 <Cepheid> Still sugars in those, yes, I know, but not as much as a can of pepsi or a chocolate bar.

22:57 <Schism> A study at the University of Waterloo, I believe, found that when the pancreas was injected with capsaicin, it occasionally helped to spark it into action.

22:57 <Fn> I drink so much liquid (4-6l/day) that diabetes type 2 won't hit me any time soon

22:57 <Cepheid> So, basically, my eating pepperoncini is a good thing.

22:58 <Fn> Au contrair I can wash something away that I need and get, say, muscle cramps

22:58 <Cepheid> Fn:  Your eating habits don't really determine whether or not you'll get diabetes.  Only the when, and even then there's still an element of randomness.

22:58 <Schism> Cepheid: Hey, capsaicin is healthy in general.  :S

22:58 <Cepheid> Your genetics can certainly contribute to it.

22:59 <Fn> Cepheid, at that rate I can afford to wash the excess sugars out through urine

22:59 <Cepheid> I mean, case in point, there are morbidly obese people out there who eat more sugar than I do, and they haven't developed diabetes somehow.

22:59 <Cepheid> Of course, they have *OTHER* problems to deal with, but yeah.

22:59 <Fn> And the best thing: I grew up drinking this much, so that in itself is not damaging my body

23:00 <DerpyBot> New post on Equestria Daily by Sethisto: Aloka My Little Pony Starlights Now Available  [ http://tinyurl.com/y7tzd89j ]

23:00 <Cepheid> Speaking of fluids and such, my parents bought me an insulated water bottle.

23:00 <Cepheid> I should keep it filled with ice and water.

23:00 <Fn> Cepheid, there are some genes that seem to be crucial in regulation of sugars and not all people have these genes in sufficient quantity (or they have them deactivated for some odd reason)

23:01 <Fn> I am lucky to know that no one had sugar issues in my family

23:01 <Cepheid> In my case, likely recessive genes.  Both parents are diabetic.

23:01 <Fn> Actually an opposite: my ancestors binged on sweet things without consequences

23:02 <Cepheid> So the genes in question are either few in number, or deactivated/dormant.

23:02 <Fn> We need more NNs researching genes!

23:02 <Fn> Gotta fix them all!

23:02 <Cepheid> I want genes to fix my male-pattern baldness.

23:02 <Fn> (NN == Neural Network)

23:02 <Cepheid> I figured.

23:03 <Schism> Fn: Thinking about fold.it?

23:03 * Cepheid is a computer scientist. :P

23:03 <Fn> Schism, in fact I am playing foldit for BOINC team

23:03 * Cepheid is not a neural network person, though.

23:03 <Cepheid> I actually don't really know what I should specialize in.

23:03 <Schism> Fn: Sweet.  I should reinstall that, actually.

23:03 <Fn> Fun game and realising that I am actually gaming for science makes me feel fuzzy inside!

23:03 <Cepheid> Games seems like a bad idea for me to specialize in, as they feel more like a hobby to me more than anything else.

23:03 <Schism> They need to put fold.it on Steam.  <_<

23:04 <Schism> Free to play, add achievements...

23:04 <Fn> Yess! Totally!

23:04 <Cepheid> Meanwhile, developing tools for games, or tools for various purposes seems more my area.

23:04 <Fn> Actually, I am totally convinced that we need more "gamifying experiences" like that one

23:04 <Schism> Cepheid: That could still very well be a viable speciality.

23:05 * Cepheid is thinking of creating a simulated radar that tracks lua-controlled airplanes. Mostly so he can then create an application that receives data from said simulated radar.

23:07 <Fn> Which type of radar?

23:07 <Fn> Triangulating, SPR, Field Intererence?

23:08 <Fn> (SPR is the one in the moving vehicles - single point radar)

23:08 <Cepheid> Type you find at airports.  Not ADS-B or anything like that.

23:08 <Fn> The other two are the stationed radars that take multiple station's inputs to lacate the "blip"

23:08 <Fn> locate+

23:09 <Fn> The triangulating one then.

23:10 <Fn> (the field interference uses two just two points, thus only is used by the army in an active deployment)

23:10 <Cepheid> Mmhmm.  I want to implement the ASTERIX data format for transmission.

23:10 <Fn> Have fun using voronoi grids

23:10 <Fn> (that script makes triangulation more precise)

23:13 <Cepheid> Heh.

23:18 <Cepheid> Sweet geezus.

23:18 <Cepheid> A 28-year-old man was killed by police during a SWATting incident.

23:18 <Cepheid> It gets worse, though.

23:20 <Cepheid> The people who did the SWATting were given a random address.

23:20 <Cepheid> The people who did it were fighting over $1.50 gaming bet or whatever, and one of them handed the other an address, which was then used in a SWATting event.  Unfortunately, that address was associated with no one in the game they were playing.

23:21 <Cepheid> They just got a random person killed.

23:21 <Schism> Yup.

23:21 <Schism> And that is why SWATting should be treated, in every case, as at least attempted homicide.

23:23 <Cepheid> Would it be considered pre-meditated murder in this case?

23:23 <Schism> Yes.

23:23 <Cepheid> The ultimate goal of SWATting is to get someone to be treated poorly by SWAT and police forces.  The most extreme of this treatment is being shot.

23:23 <Cepheid> So arguably, one of the potential goals of SWATting is to murder someone indirectly.

23:24 <Schism> Further, it's been well-documented that many SWAT teams are even more gung-ho than their position would warrant.

23:27 <Cepheid> Right, build from the top down.  So, define the core desired features, then flesh those features out into sub-features.  And if necessary, sub-sub-features, etc.

23:31 <Cepheid> So, using a signed integer, and accounting for centimeter accuracy..

23:31 <Cepheid> Er, signed 64-bit integer that is.

23:32 <Cepheid> The maximum possible radius I can handle is 616,544 AU.

23:32 <Cepheid> Or roughly 100,000 times the size of our solar system.

23:32 <Cepheid> I think I may cut that down a bit.
