02:32 <ADragonDreaming> The big first campaign that actually finished, we had a rogue, a cavalier, a wizard, and a druid.

02:33 <ADragonDreaming> this was also ponyfinder, so the cavalier was her own mount.
02:34 <ADragonDreaming> It was some years ago as well, so that type of verbatim details are a bit foggy.
02:35 <ADragonDreaming> however, there was a point at which the party wound up in a larger scale battle, up in the clouds, against a pegasus army with pegasus backup and a friendly unicorn necromancer.
02:37 <Cepheid> ... Friendly unicorn necromancer.
02:37 <ADragonDreaming> We directed our NPC allies to block the skirmisher flank, my druid turned into a wind elemental and whirlwinded her way into the front line, drawing a bunch of the pegasai into a cluster, into which the wizard threw a fireball.

02:51 <Ali> Cause of the effecient modules
02:51 <Cepheid> I automated efficiency modules. Had thousands produced, and slapped them into everything.
02:51 <Cepheid> Then when we ran out of iron, I finished up Iron Forge, hooked it up, and now we're minus 60 or so steel furnaces that were polluting.

04:09 <Cepheid> I just caught myself looking up whether or not closures existed in recent versions of C. They don't, but compilers for the language(GCC, clang, in particular) do.
04:10 <RazorSharpFang> Well, sometimes something similar.
04:10 *** Quits: matttheshadowman (mattthesha@the.shadowy.corners) (Quit: I will return to the shadows)
04:10 <RazorSharpFang> Like, Java has Throwable, and Exception and Error extend off that. C# has no Throwable class, you can't catch errors. (Like StackOverFlow)
04:11 <RazorSharpFang> So in Java, you can catch a StackOverFlow error if you so desired.
04:12 <RazorSharpFang> Mind you, a stack over-flow is usually an indicator that you're doing something wrong.
04:12 <Cepheid> Arguably, catching exceptions shouldn't be possible. If a program throws an exception, it's because the problem is an exceptional case: It shouldn't happen.
04:12 <Cepheid> Therefore, the program should by all rights terminate right there.
04:12 <RazorSharpFang> Well, that depends on what you consider exceptional.
04:12 <RazorSharpFang> For instance, I consider myself exceptional. :P
04:12 <Cepheid> I was just about to say.
04:13 <Cepheid> I say that this is how exceptions should be treated, but I use exceptions to handle cleanup in certain situations.
04:13 <Cepheid> Say, a constructor for a class that opens a file, but then throws an exception.
04:13 <RazorSharpFang> I see exceptions used to handle situations where constructors fail.
04:13 <Cepheid> Yeah, so we're alike in that regard.
04:14 <Cepheid> I also like to use exceptions as a way to avoid a growing if-then-else tree.
04:14 <RazorSharpFang> GOTOs are great for that too. :P
04:15 <Cepheid> Nothing like seeing if (...) { if (...) { if (...) { if (...) { } else { } } else { } } else { } } else { } }
04:15 <Cepheid> It's a true pain when you got people who complain about long lines(Longer than 80 characters, 'cause terminals.)
04:15 <Cepheid> Because by the time you hit the top of the if statement pile, you've got maybe 10-15 characters left.
04:18 <Cepheid> Funny thing is, if you look at documentation around the net, there are arguments for and against this kind of programming. I personally think it's better than just letting the constructor throw exceptions, never calling the destructor, and having leaked memory everywhere.
04:20 <RazorSharpFang> Well, for managed languages you'd hope that the classes would fully encapsulate all the messy low-level unmanaged stuff.
04:21 <Cepheid> Right.
04:26 <RazorSharpFang> 'Course, you gotta comment the stuff well for the next poor guy who has to maintain your stuff.

04:30 <Cepheid> Arguably, given what I've seen come out of Valve and Epic, I'd say we're fine as programmers.
04:33 <RazorSharpFang> My problems sometimes come from when the language doesn't have features I like to use a lot. Like working in non-OO languages, or languages without namespaces, etc.
04:34 <Cepheid> Usually those issues can be resolved, sort of.
04:35 <RazorSharpFang> Mock-classes made out of a Dictionary.
04:35 <Cepheid> A common method to the namespace approach is to prefix all functions or procedures with the namespace name, so for example, I have a PNG library written in C. "PNG_Open" or "png_open" or "pngOpen", "PNG_Close" or "png_close" or "pngClose" and so on.
04:35 <RazorSharpFang> Gotta document everything
04:36 <Cepheid> For object-oriented style coding with polymorphism, you can create functions that return data structures with pointers to functions that accept said data structure, plus any arguments necessary. For polymorphism, just change the pointers to functions around.
04:37 <RazorSharpFang> Yeah, just return a handle to a Dictionary.

06:07 <Cepheid> There are two answers to that question. Though, the answer you are looking for is "No, it does not."
06:07 <Cepheid> I say there's two answers because some structures have a "Drain" associated with them.
06:07 <Ali> Thats for power though not pollution?
06:07 <Cepheid> True. But for basic electricity, what do you need to generate it? Boilers, steam engines. Boilers pollute.
06:08 <Cepheid> If there is a constant drain, then even when the buildings are inactive, they are causing steam engines to run. Therefore, boilers are running and polluting as they generate steam for the engines.
06:08 <Cepheid> The only way around it is solar or nuclear energy.
06:09 <Ali> Yeah I know X.x

06:33 <ConfusionRift> Hello everypony.
06:35 <Thelema5> Hihi
06:35 <Cepheid> Morning.
06:36 * ConfusionRift waves.
06:38 <Cepheid> Schism: The only reason I'm bringing this up is because of a redesign of my dungeon crawler story. I wanted an eldritch abomination for the true final boss. But such entities are often described as being beyond comprehension by a mortal mind, among other things. Such as driving people insane.
06:38 <Cepheid> So it's not enough to give it a definite appearance, because that in itself implies that it has a form that a mortal mind can comprehend.
06:39 <Schism> Hmmm.
06:40 <Schism> One common example is photorealism in an otherwise non-photorealistic game.
06:42 <Schism> Or a definite change in art style.
06:42 <Cepheid> The other reason why I think a sort of "black hole" type approach works is because in fractals like the mandelbrot series, there are black spaces and such. As much as I understand, these regions represent colours or numbers that exist outside the visible spectrum or the real number set.
06:44 <Schism> True. (There is no such thing as magenta.)
06:53 <ConfusionRift> "A representation of the protagonists' greatest fears"?
06:55 <ConfusionRift> Bah, that can be a million things.
06:59 *** Quits: Sleepai (Snapai@Pony-1rr6vl.nc.charter.com) (Ping timeout: 121 seconds)
06:59 <Cepheid> That's part of the problem. It's unknowable in appearance. It cannot be comprised or amalgamated from anything that we, as human beings, know. The best approach is to show nothing. However, if it has a physical appearance, it isn't invisible. Light does not pass through it. Also take into consideration the psychology of seeing shapes.
07:00 <Cepheid> In the visual part of our brain, there are neurons that are designed specifically to react to certain shapes.
07:00 <Cepheid> A straight vertical line. A line at 23.44444 degrees that has a length of 1.22 nanometers.
07:01 <Cepheid> If the thing in question has an unknowable form, it's because the brain simply doesn't have the structure to interpret what it is seeing. It'd just appear as nothing.
07:02 <Cepheid> At best, the brain would attempt to fill in that empty space with an approximation of what it thinks should be there based on surrounding information.
07:03 <Cepheid> Which seems likely, as our brain does something like that to begin with. We have a blind spit in both of our eyes.
07:03 <Cepheid> You just don't see it because the brain reconstructs the missing information using surrounding information, and information from the other eye.
07:04 <Cepheid> So, a being that mortal minds cannot visually comprehend? It'd likely appear either as blackness with a defined exterior shape, or as a jumble of colour that warps and twists as it, or your eyes, move around.
07:04 <ConfusionRift> The thing is that an unknowable form can also mean a form that has no identifiable shape. The brain may just fill the gaps with recognizable shapes, but can also go wild and make a unique form either from current info or amalgamations of what the brain considers a shape.
07:05 <Cepheid> Yes, but the likelyhood that the human mind would fill it in with shapes from creatures is pretty low.
07:07 <Cepheid> With no way to see what's behind it, it seems reasonable that at the worst, it'd appear as a bunch of differently-coloured triangular shapes converging towards the center of the object. The colours of each triangle being defined by whatever colour is most prominent at the edge of the object that meets the base of the triangle.
07:07 <ConfusionRift> Fear can make one's mind go wild and start merging things together. Might be something as pure as a butterfly, but can also just be a form out of nowhere, even a creature of sorts. The brain can also bring previous traumas into effect, increasing that chance.
07:07 <Cepheid> Aye. The issue here is that from my perspective as the developer, what does the player consider it's greatest fear?
07:08 <Cepheid> Since that is, by default, different for every person, I can't use "greatest fear" as a form.
07:09 <Cepheid> Plus, some people react to phobias differently. Arachnophobes seem to have an extreme aversion to the sight of spiders, not just their presence, for example.
07:09 <Cepheid> So I can't like, go create a list of possible things to be afraid of and let the player choose from that list at the start of the game.
07:09 <ConfusionRift> Remember that the player is a controller. This fear can be something that story-wise affects the protagonist. Then again, if you want to go that way, yes. That would be difficult.
07:10 <Cepheid> Because it's entirely possible that whatever they choose, may invoke a visual reaction that prevents them from playing.
07:10 <Cepheid> The other issue is that there is no single protaganist.
07:10 <ConfusionRift> There's that too.
07:10 <Cepheid> It's a dungeon crawler. Teams of five.
07:10 <Cepheid> With the player being a sixth that leads the team.
07:10 <Cepheid> But doesn't directly interact in the battle.
07:11 <ConfusionRift> It could be a trial of a sort.
07:11 *** Joins: The_Nostalgia_Mare (Nossy@Pony-o73sar.fl.comcast.net)
07:12 <Cepheid> In any case, I don't want to use defined features, for fear of terrorizing players who want to finish the game. I don't know why arachnophobia is such a big one for players, but it's troublesome enough that players can't even play games like Skyrim because of it.
07:12 <Cepheid> And yet, a person next to them who has a phobia of bears can easily wander about and kill the bears no problem.
07:12 <Cepheid> Fear is a wonky thing
07:12 <ConfusionRift> I hate heights.
07:12 <Cepheid> Same, and yet I can put up with them.
07:12 <ConfusionRift> Truth be told, it also affects me in gaming.
07:13 <Cepheid> I'm also claustrophobic.
07:13 <Cepheid> For the longest time, I hated getting in elevators.
07:13 <ConfusionRift> It gives me a sense of vertigo. And don't get me started with the mess that was the sky temple in Twilight Princess.
07:13 <Cepheid> Still do, to a degree. The tech building at school has an elevator that, when approaching the destination floor, spontaneously makes a loud, grinding noise.
07:14 <ConfusionRift> That does not help.
07:14 * The_Nostalgia_Mare walks in, brandishing a Ice Axe.
07:14 <The_Nostalgia_Mare> o3o
07:14 <ConfusionRift> Hallo, The_Nostalgia_Mare. :P
07:15 <The_Nostalgia_Mare> I've been playing lots of God Of War.
07:15 <Cepheid> In any case, I'd rather leave it up to the imagination what the thing is supposed to look like. Perhaps use a visual effect to hide it's appearance, but explicitly make references to it's appearance in wording. It's set in a futuristic world, so perhaps a piece of technology is capable of scanning, analyzing it, and describing what it is. Or may be. It isn't sure.
07:16 <ConfusionRift> Pull off a Gyigas? :P
07:16 <Cepheid> Something like that.
07:17 <ConfusionRift> Wow, that would get anyone. Hmm.
07:17 <Cepheid> It appears as a bubbling, black mass with refracting effect around the edges. The description could describe it in terms of structures, such as it being bipedal or quadrapedal, having X feature, etc.
07:17 <Cepheid> Or possibly what it thinks those features are.
07:20 <Schism> Clurporitous mass. ("That's not a word." "Good.")
07:20 <Cepheid> I don't want to treat it as some sort of embodiment of an innate feature of humanity or life in general. I'd like to treat it as if it were some sort of natural being that just happens to exist, but cannot be comprehended physically by beings in what we call the material world.
07:22 * The_Nostalgia_Mare marks her face with red lip stick to look like Kratos and puts on a false beard and a bald cap as she walks to Schism. "Boy. You know how to hunt, yes?" In a very deep voice.
07:23 * Schism sticks arrow in deer. "I do."

07:43 <Cepheid> Schism: Fun random note.
07:43 <Cepheid> I had a dream the other night.
07:43 <Schism> Aye?
07:44 <ConfusionRift> Gonna take tanks from the gas. I think they're causing issues.
07:45 <Cepheid> It was a Persona-themed dream for some reason, that, while involving Toronto, actually took place in a city directly south across the lake from Toronto.
07:45 <Cepheid> Which appears to be St. Catherines or Niagara Falls.
07:46 * Schism nods, "Was it a more, ah... affluent town?"
07:47 <Cepheid> I can't recall. Just that it had lots of highrises and office towers. I just remember that, despite the distance, I was able to see Toronto from across the lake.
07:50 <Cepheid> My dreams keep getting weirder and weirder.
07:54 <Cepheid> ConfusionRift: The biggest issue with oil is processing it such that the entire thing just doesn't grind to a halt. It requires math.
07:55 <Cepheid> For example, how many refineries do you plan to set up, and what process will they be using?
07:56 <ConfusionRift> I know I know. And I'm terrible at it.
07:56 <Cepheid> Hell, I know the pitfalls of it, and I'm terrible at it.
07:57 <Cepheid> I plan at some point to build an entire plant for processing oil, which all the oil wells we find will deliver crude to. Processing directly from pumpjack is asking for trouble down the road.
07:57 <ConfusionRift> Oh wait! We can use the northern surplus of gas for explosives!

07:58 <ConfusionRift> We got the coal and water, just need the sulfur.
07:58 <ConfusionRift> Starwatcher: Who doesn't? :P
