00:00 <Schism> To be quite frank, I know it's probably wrong, but a lack of Ethernet NIC is what I would consider a 'faulty motherboard'.

00:00 <Cepheid> Except that it's a "recent" addition.  Ethernet used to be on a separate board.

00:00 <Schism> I know, I know.

00:05 <DerpyBot> New post on Equestria Daily by Sethisto: Giant Tiered Pony Head Cake on Food Network [ http://tinyurl.com/yc2f6nvq ]

00:10 <Schism> Formal logic, as expressed by Bill Mitchell, R:IL-87.  A -> B, C -> B, therefore A -> C.

00:12 <Cepheid> Uh...

00:13 <Schism> He followed that statement with 'That's just math.'

00:13 <Cepheid> I don't recall learning that back in discrete mathematics.

00:13 <Cepheid> I know A->B, B->C, then A->C is valid, but that..

00:14 <Schism> Yeah, doesn't quite fit, does it?

00:15 <Cepheid> Yup.

00:21 * Cepheid drinks a coffee.

00:22 * Schism might do the same, except the coffeemaker in a cleaning cycle. Once it stops smelling like vinegar, he'll probably make himself up a pot.

00:23 *** Moongoodgirl{K} is now known as Moongoodboy{K}

00:23 <Cepheid> Boil some water, add to coffee grinds, pour into filter over a cup or jar, etc.

00:24 <Schism> A possibility.  Or I have a percolator.  The concern there is that I'd need to clean the percolator first.

00:25 <Cepheid> I can do either instant, or coffee grind approach because we have a French Press for some reason.

00:25 <Schism> Well, a French Press is pretty small.  o3o

00:26 <Schism> Coulda sworn we had one here, too, but evidently this is not the case.

00:27 <Cepheid> Heh.

00:29 * Schism has a pasta machine, though. ...

00:29 <Schism> No, no.  I don't need to make linguine alfredo tonight.

00:29 <Cepheid> Heh.

00:34 <Schism> Coffee machine is much faster now.  Takes barely 10 minutes to drip through.

00:35 <Cepheid> Heh.

00:35 <Cepheid> I am unfortunately stuck with a french press, or instant.

00:36 <Schism> Well, you don't drink more than a cup at a time these days, lest you get migraines.

00:36 <Cepheid> Not migraines.

00:36 <Cepheid> I get irritable.

00:36 <Schism> Oh right.  Sorry, got that confused with, say, booze.

00:36 <Cepheid> Yes.

00:36 <Cepheid> I don't entirely know why I get so irritable.

00:37 <Cepheid> I do know that one cup of coffee a day is enough to cause shaking hands and stuff.

00:37 <Cepheid> And it lasts for much of the day.

00:37 * Schism nodnods, "No sense hurting yourself drinking more."

00:54 * Cepheid serves Schism a nice tall, cool glass of skellington juice.

00:56 <Schism> Is that... *looks*  What

00:56 <Schism> So, black sarcophagus.  That's a thing then.

00:57 <Cepheid> Milk.

00:57 <Cepheid> Not the sarcophagus wine.

00:58 <Schism> Oh, alright then.

00:58 * Schism dips cookies into it. The milk, that is.

00:59 <Cepheid> Sarcophagus Wine, Skeleton Ambrosia, Curse Juice.

01:05 <DerpyBot> New post on Equestria Daily by Sethisto: My Little Pony Speedpaint Compilation #36 [ http://tinyurl.com/y8mwoajx ]

01:06 <Schism> A real brew-ha-ha.

01:09 *** Joins: ADragonDreaming (IceChat9@Pony-tpdjag.livnmi.sbcglobal.net)

01:09 <ADragonDreaming> woof.

01:10 <Cepheid> Meow.

01:11 <ADragonDreaming> How doth it go?

01:11 <Cepheid> Been missing for some time.  What game or games caught your attention?

01:11 <ADragonDreaming> Mm, less games, more circumstances.

01:12 <Cepheid> Let's see, finished my course over the summer.  B mark.  Then lots of gaming, programming.  Contacted by university with request that I sign up for a TA position..

01:12 <Cepheid> Managed to get a new psych appointment for the 16th of August.

01:12 <ADragonDreaming> My sister and her clan went to visit family and childhood in Ivory Coast

01:12 <ADragonDreaming> so I was at their house for three weeks

01:13 <ADragonDreaming> In the meantime the laptop's developed battery plague, so there've been semi-frequent shutdowns.

01:13 <ADragonDreaming> and IRC was not set to start automatically.

01:13 <ADragonDreaming> Good to hear the course of study went well.

01:13 <ADragonDreaming> Planning on taking that TA spot/

01:13 <ADragonDreaming> *?

01:14 <Cepheid> I know who requested me, and I hold too much respect for them to refuse, so I signed up.  Given that they don't NORMALLY ask students to sign up, I'm under the impression it's a sure-thing.

01:15 <ADragonDreaming> Generally if they ask you to do a thing there's a good chance it'll happen, so yeah.

01:16 <Cepheid> I don't mind taking the position either because it's programming, not math.

01:16 <ADragonDreaming> Aha, nice.

01:16 <ADragonDreaming> In terms of games, I played through Rage of Mages in its entirety while house-sitting.

01:17 <Cepheid> Heh.

01:18 <ADragonDreaming> And I am currently giving Dark Souls a second chance.

01:18 <Cepheid> How's that going?

01:18 <Cepheid> Also, did you hear about MH:World?

01:18 <ADragonDreaming> Yes.

01:19 <ADragonDreaming> I will be canceling my pre-order on the 5th of August, due to Denuvo.

01:19 <ADragonDreaming> And may pick it up some time after launch.

01:19 <Cepheid> I'm indifferent about denuvo.  My concern is the requirements.

01:20 <Cepheid> And how they plan to handle hacking.

01:20 <Cepheid> Because PC Monster Hunter = Pretty much open to cheating like you wouldn't believe.

01:20 <ADragonDreaming> I've heard it's resource-intensive, yes. haven't heard about hacking.

01:20 <ADragonDreaming> But, eh, so long as I can still pick who I play with I'm not super-concerned about hacking.

01:21 <Cepheid> Aye.

01:21 <Cepheid> I guess then for the time being you'll be doing MH:Generations G?

01:21 <ADragonDreaming> Yes.

01:22 <Cepheid> Yeah, I was thinking the same.  Hold off on MH:World until I got better hardware.  I also want to see how Capcom plans to handle the extra content they're releasing for it.

01:24 <ADragonDreaming> Aye.

01:25 <ADragonDreaming> What are they planning for hacking?

01:25 <Cepheid> I haven't heard anything at all.

01:26 <Schism> Maybe they can follow in SONIC Team's footst--*brick'd*

01:26 <ADragonDreaming> heh

01:27 <ADragonDreaming> As far as Dark souls goes, I've gotten 16 levels, got a halberd at +5, a black knight shield at +2, and range the Undead Parish bell, in about, eh... 4 or hours of play?

01:27 <ADragonDreaming> *ran

01:27 <ADragonDreaming> *rang

01:27 <Schism> Sadly, you didn't get the hammer.  ;-;

01:27 <ADragonDreaming> Incorrect.

01:27 <ADragonDreaming> Black firebombs.

01:28 <Cepheid> Prepare to Die edition or Remastered?

01:28 <ADragonDreaming> Prepare to Die

01:28 <Schism> You used those?  Nice.

01:28 <Schism> Of course, it'll be a couple levels before you have the Strength to use it.

01:29 <ADragonDreaming> I probably won't use it.

01:29 <Cepheid> Remastered isn't problematic, but for gods sake disable netplay on PC.

01:29 <Cepheid> Apparently there is a severe hacking issue on the PC release.

01:29 <ADragonDreaming> Oh, I'm not surprised.

01:29 <ADragonDreaming> So far I've yet to be invaded.

01:29 <Cepheid> Hacking issues are the primary reason I prefer PS4 or other consoles, though consoles aren't immune to the problem either.

01:29 <ADragonDreaming> We'll see if it keeps up.

01:30 <ADragonDreaming> If it gets annoying, I'll dig deeper into disabling it.

01:30 <Cepheid> PS4 and XBoxOne take more effort.  Switch is...

01:30 <ADragonDreaming> Nothing simple was available.

01:30 <Schism> But Adra, Y NO PLAY AS HOLLO.  He said with a groan... hmm.

01:30 <Cepheid> Switch hacking is a problem now.

01:30 <ADragonDreaming> "Because then I can't summon Solaire."

01:30 <Cepheid> Because the system's been broken open.

01:30 <Schism> Oh.  Adra: just disable network usage for the game itself in Windows.

01:30 <Cepheid> Apparently there's a glitch in the underlying Tegra hardware that Nintendo cannot patch or fix, which allows for easy OS replacement, etc.

01:31 <PinkieShy> hhe

01:31 <PinkieShy> *heh

01:31 <ADragonDreaming> Cepheid: that's the thing where you have to mess with the physical hardware, innit?

01:31 <PinkieShy> Orange is the new black this season is.. Cray cray.

01:31 <Schism> I have heard that's a good thing, with one cast member who was bringing it down getting out.

01:31 <Cepheid> You don't have to mess with the physical hardware.

01:32 <Cepheid> Apparently it doesn't require hardware manipulation.  It's just the problem is IN the hardware itself and can't be fixed.

01:32 <Cepheid> Well, by software updates.

01:32 <Cepheid> It requires hardware manufacturing changes to fix.

01:32 <ADragonDreaming> Ah. Last I'd heard you had to mess with one control sticks.

01:32 <ADragonDreaming> *one of the

01:34 <Cepheid> Apparently it's no longer required to do hardware changes.

01:34 <Schism> Oh.  Adra, without GWFL enabled, evidently you can disable Dark Souls multiplayer by putting Steam into Offline mode.

01:34 <Schism> (It no longer uses GFWL, it uses Steam instead.)

01:34 <Cepheid> The glitch is in the Tegra chip itself, and apparently because it's hardware-level, it can't be fixed with firmware updates, and ultimately, any system prior to when the glitch was found is guaranteed to work with CFW.

01:34 <ADragonDreaming> Schism: Aye, I know the tricks itself.

01:35 <Schism> Oh, okay then.  :S

01:35 <ADragonDreaming> But it's somewhat annoying.

01:35 <Schism> No doubt.

01:35 <ADragonDreaming> And because the community is what it is, no one's made a mod that just prevents invasions.

01:36 <Cepheid> In any case I'm not touching CFW for my switch right now.  I'll wait until Nintendo decides to move onto a new system.

01:36 <ADragonDreaming> CFW stands for what?

01:37 <Cepheid> Custom FirmWare.

01:37 <ADragonDreaming> ah

01:37 <Cepheid> I generally only toy with it when I'm dealing with hardware that's being abandoned for one reason or another.

01:37 <Cepheid> For example, my PSVita, my 3DS, Wii U, etc.

01:38 <ADragonDreaming> Aye.

01:38 <ADragonDreaming> Also, fist-pump.

01:38 <ADragonDreaming> I got a Black Knight Greatsword.

01:38 <Cepheid> Nice.

01:38 *** Quits: SunsetShimmer (DJPon3IsHer@DJ.Wub.Wub) (Quit: Nini!)

01:39 <Schism> Hmmm, shiny indeed.

01:40 <Cepheid> Someone compel me to get off my butt and work.

01:40 <ADragonDreaming> Cepheid: Do work, son.

01:40 * Schism sends a collection of Mabs after Cepheid.

01:41 <Cepheid> Basically what I need to do now, now that I got a terrible, but usable model editor for this project, is to create a tool that allows me to combine these models into larger composite objects.

01:42 <Cepheid> I think I'll take my keyboard try down and set up a workspace down here tonight.

01:43 * ADragonDreaming head tilts

01:43 <ADragonDreaming> oh, tray

01:45 <ADragonDreaming> Undead Burg has no challenge for me at this point.

01:45 <ADragonDreaming> Halberd kills all these hollows in one shot.

01:46 <Cepheid> Then time to move on, yo.

01:46 <ADragonDreaming> oh, yes, I was just there to hit the bonfire.

01:46 <Cepheid> But yeah, I have a keyboard tray that's nice and wide.  I found it works well with my mother's lay-z-boy chair.

01:46 <ADragonDreaming> shortcut was opened to the lower burg.

01:46 <Cepheid> Combine that with an external mouse and mousepad, and I can do work anywhere in the house relatively easily.

01:48 <ADragonDreaming> Nice

01:48 <ADragonDreaming> Also, hi Griggs

01:48 <ADragonDreaming> I will probably not buy anything you sell.

01:49 <Cepheid> That's the undead burg salesman, right?

01:49 <ADragonDreaming> Nah

01:49 <Cepheid> He sells a key for one of the buildings in the Burg, if you haven't taken the Master Key.

01:49 <ADragonDreaming> That's the Undead Male Merchant

01:49 <Cepheid> Oh.

01:49 <ADragonDreaming> Griggs is the first sorcery trainer

01:49 <Schism> Repaaaair.

01:50 <ADragonDreaming> you need that key from the Undead Male Merchant to rescue Griggs from the lower burg.

01:50 <ADragonDreaming> Yes, I have that box already.

01:50 <Schism> Mage light, too?

01:50 <ADragonDreaming> Hm? No.

01:50 <Schism> Oh right, he doesn't sell that one.

01:51 <ADragonDreaming> I don't believe that UMM sells any sorceries

01:51 <ADragonDreaming> and Griggs is not yet back at Firelink.

01:52 <Schism> Ah right.

01:52 <Schism> Hmm.  Stock up on regular firebombs?

01:53 <ADragonDreaming> I'm doing well with my halberd. Also, I started Pyromancer.

01:53 <ADragonDreaming> I have fireballs.

01:54 <ADragonDreaming> need to remember lock-on is the mouse-wheel click

01:54 <Schism> I switched it to R.

01:55 <ADragonDreaming> r swaps my spells.

01:55 <ADragonDreaming> I might flip it at some point

01:55 * Schism nods.

01:56 <ADragonDreaming> I am now picking up armor sets.

01:56 <ADragonDreaming> However I don't have a reason to swap off pyro rags yet.

01:56 <ADragonDreaming> aha, there's Capra's door.

01:56 <Cepheid> Before I start working, I should probably take a shower and get changed into appropriate clothing instead of sitting in pajamas.  Something-something-something getting dressed for what you want to do helps focus on the topic at hand.

01:56 <ADragonDreaming> Hmmm... I have 6k souls.

01:57 <Schism> Cepheid: Ooh, put on a businessman's noose.

01:57 <ADragonDreaming> Nah, I can do this.

01:57 <Cepheid> Capra Demon.  Capra Demons aren't hard, by nature.  It's just annoying because of the way the arena is set up.

01:57 <Cepheid> And how the AI of the Capra Demon starts while you're still transitioning.

01:59 <ADragonDreaming> One and done.

02:00 <Cepheid> Nice.

02:00 <ADragonDreaming> It didn't take me too many tries first time around.

02:00 <Cepheid> Anyways, back in 20 minutes.  I'm gonna go take a shower.

02:00 <ADragonDreaming> Back in 2014

02:00 <ADragonDreaming> But that is because of Monster hunter.

02:04 <ADragonDreaming> Hi, Undead Female Merchant!

02:08 <ADragonDreaming> Hey Griggs! How'd you get here before I did?

02:12 *** Joins: Thelema5 (Thelema5@is.a.curious.pone)

02:12 <Thelema5> Helllo everypony

02:14 <ADragonDreaming> Lautrec, even if I didn't know what you are about, your voice would make you the most untrustworthy guy ever.

02:17 <Schism> You might kinda sorta want to keep that Firelink Shrine bonfire active.

02:20 <PinkieShy> Do you guys think if my doctor said every other night for melatonin is safe.. That taking it 3 nights in a row would be considered short term use of it?

02:21 <ADragonDreaming> I am not a doctor.

02:21 <Cepheid> I take melatonin frequently.

02:21 <Cepheid> Night after night is fine.

02:21 <Cepheid> I once took it for three months day-after-day with no long-term effects.

02:21 <ADragonDreaming> But if I stop Lautrec, then girl won't ever be able to speak.

02:21 <Cepheid> Either way, Lautrec kills her, rescue him or not.

02:22 <Thelema5> PinkieShy, it's safe but it's most useful for resetting your circadian rhythms

02:22 <PinkieShy> cepheid so it don't make your body like stop making it naturally?

02:22 <Cepheid> Not as far as I know.

02:22 <ADragonDreaming> Yeah, I know, I already rescued him.

02:22 <PinkieShy> Thelema5 I'm using it to counteract my sleep habits :/

02:22 <ADragonDreaming> The only way to stop him from killing the girl is to kill him RIGHT NOW.

02:22 <PinkieShy> Keep taking naps during the day unexpectedly

02:22 <Cepheid> Pretty much, ADragonDreaming.

02:22 <PinkieShy> I say i am going to lay down to just lay down.. End up falling ot sleep for an hour.

02:22 <Thelema5> Yeah, melatonin will help with that if you take it half an hour before bedtime

02:22 <PinkieShy> I take 3mg

02:23 <PinkieShy> it says like 20 minutes before on the bottle

02:23 <ADragonDreaming> I hear you snoring, Frampt.

02:23 <Cepheid> Get ringing those bells.

02:23 <Thelema5> Meh, what's an extra 10 minutes? That's a typical dose, PinkieShy

02:23 <ADragonDreaming> I could use you waking up so that I can feed you dupe items.

02:23 <ADragonDreaming> I don't need three hollow soldier shields

02:24 <Thelema5> The place I work sells up to 10 mg. melatonin per dose but it's not often sold

02:24 <Cepheid> PinkieShy:  It tends to kick in relatively quick, yes.  Especially if you use it right.

02:24 <ADragonDreaming> Hello Haircut.

02:24 <ADragonDreaming> Your haircut bros and M'Lady are here, eh?

02:25 <DerpyBot> New post on Equestria Daily by Calpain: Nightly Discussion #1515 [ http://tinyurl.com/y7a6o3cl ]

02:25 <Schism> Hmmmm, plus if you kill 'im now, you can get that Ring of Favor and Protection right away.

02:25 <Cepheid> But then you'll have sinned and will need to get that clear.

02:25 <PinkieShy> Thelema5 and Cepheid i had to do it the other day lol

02:25 <Schism> Oh, true.

02:25 <ADragonDreaming> And again

02:25 <PinkieShy> I was tossing and turning in bed and didn't get to sleep until 6am

02:25 <ADragonDreaming> girly will be mute forever.

02:26 <PinkieShy> I decided enough is enough and just took it

02:26 <Thelema5> PinkieShy, that's good but you should take it proactively to set your natural sleep cycle when you want it, not as a "fall asleep now" kinda thing

02:27 <ADragonDreaming> Hey Reah. Guess what.

02:27 <ADragonDreaming> Your boys are punks.

02:28 <Thelema5> The best use for melatonin is treating jet lag; if you travel to the other side of the world you body expects to sleep at the usual biological time, which would be mid-day in the new place... so people take it to reset their bodies "internal clock" to local time

02:28 <PinkieShy> I'm doing that now tho :)

02:28 <Thelema5> Yep!

02:28 <PinkieShy> Trying to get my sleep cycle set to 2am.

02:28 <PinkieShy> and wake up at 10am

02:29 <PinkieShy> I stay up so late to spend time with my dad when he gets home :P

02:30 <PinkieShy> That should change tho soon

02:30 <PinkieShy> Walmart is changing his hours supposedly soon

02:30 <Thelema5> Oh?

02:30 <PinkieShy> instead of 2 to 11 I believe he said it'll be 1 to 10.

02:31 <Thelema5> Just a slight change then

02:31 * Schism wonders what Adra's covenant will be.

02:32 <ADragonDreaming> None of them are super useful.

02:33 <Schism> Way of White, I guess, might be your go-to.

02:33 <PinkieShy> Thelema5 they had to take out like 4 registers in our walmart lol

02:33 <PinkieShy> They now have a giant pickup robot in their place.

02:33 <PinkieShy> for online pickup lol

02:33 <ADragonDreaming> It's what I have now. Might do Sunbro, or Fair Lady, later.

02:34 * Schism offers Cepheid some spicy onion and garlic soup to clear his sinuses.

02:35 <Cepheid> My sinuses are surprisingly clear tonight.

02:35 <Schism> Hh.  Still tasty, tho.

02:35 <PinkieShy> My allergies don't bug me no more since using Flonase :3

02:35 * ADragonDreaming ponders what to spend souls on.

02:35 <PinkieShy> If i skip using it... the sneezing comes back tho

02:35 <Schism> I imagine Cepheid would equip the Cat Covenant Ring.

02:36 <ADragonDreaming> That's an option. I'm over half-way to the shortcut key Andre sells.

02:37 <Schism> Evidently, the Forest Hunter invasion events are a decent source of Pendants.

02:39 <PinkieShy> So found out why i got denied credit from fingerhut

02:39 <PinkieShy> They don't use the major 3 at all..

02:40 <PinkieShy> They use something called Sage Stream LLC

02:40 <PinkieShy> where my score was extremely lower than TransUnion score..

02:40 <PinkieShy> Transunion and the other one that credit karma gives free says my score is 678 but their report said 471.. uhh..

02:43 <Thelema5> PinkieShy, just be careful.  Fingerhut is kinda evil.

02:44 <ADragonDreaming> ...what is Fingerhut?

02:44 <ADragonDreaming> The name does not sound nice

02:44 <PinkieShy> Thelema5 i was going to get desk from them..

02:44 <PinkieShy> And pay it off ASAP

02:44 <Thelema5> It's a mail-order company, but they don't make money selling goods, they make money giving sub-prime loans to lower income people who will likely default on the loans

02:45 <Thelema5> I think they have a 15% interest rate on their inside line of credit

02:45 <PinkieShy> I learned all about sites like that and even Credit Cards back in High school..

02:45 <PinkieShy> Even took a simulation thing in school and I did extremely well on the Simulation..

02:46 <ADragonDreaming> Heeeeeey, Balder Side Sword

02:47 <Thelema5> All I'm saying is be careful.  Their business model is about as ethical as payday loan places

02:47 <Schism> Adra: Ooh, lucky.

02:47 <Schism> You're getting some crazy drops.

02:47 <PinkieShy> Thelema5 I kinda see that if they don't use the Major 3 like MOST do..

02:47 <ADragonDreaming> Well, this'll be a nice alt to the halberd.

02:48 <PinkieShy> well one of the Major 3..

02:48 <ADragonDreaming> And now I have a thing to spend souls on!

02:49 <Schism> A-rank Dex bonus at +14, nice.

02:49 <Thelema5> They are counting on people spending more than they can afford and defaulting, mostly lower income people, who they expect to have multiple leans on their income; they assignee of the load decides how their income is garnished when the creditors call, so they expect to get paid first so the lower-income person gets to keep that big shiny TV

02:49 <ADragonDreaming> Pat calls it the Baller Swag Sword

02:50 <PinkieShy> Thelema5 My dad uses them..

02:50 <PinkieShy> He got him a laptop, and a lawn mower..

02:50 <PinkieShy> But agian if i buy from them..

02:51 <PinkieShy> They'll see when a payment is due.. It'll be paid off lol I wouldn't over do it

02:54 <Thelema5> Good.

02:55 <Thelema5> I guess my biggest pet peeve with companies like that is they wond up charging MUCH more for big-ticket products in the long term by stretching out payments for months or even years... at 15% interest.

02:55 <Thelema5> *wind

02:56 <PinkieShy> I think their APR rate is like 29%

02:57 * Thelema5 falls over

02:58 <Thelema5> Oh good, the Orville SDCC trailer actually promotes the show right for once... as a sincere love letter to Star Trek with a few gags thrown in, as opposed to how they were promoting it last year, basically as if it were Family Guy in Space

02:58 <ADragonDreaming> whoops

02:58 <Thelema5> !link https://youtu.be/Jr7H54VLK-4

02:58 <DerpyBot> I need to ask Twilight about that one.

02:58 <DerpyBot> Twilight told me this video is about THE ORVILLE Season 2 Trailer Comic Con (2018) Seth McFarlane Fox Series

03:02 <Thelema5> Jonathan Frakes is directing two episodes this season, and marina sirtis will be costarring in one of them

03:03 <Cepheid> Heh.  This episode of Forensic Files is covering a woman suffering from... I forget the name of the syndrome, but it's where the mother becomes paranoid about their child's health, and regularly go to the hospital where they find the child is fine, etc, etc, etc.

03:03 <Cepheid> The only reason this is of interest to me is because my mother was accused of that syndrome regarding me when I was a baby.

03:03 <Thelema5> Heh

03:03 <Cepheid> Apparently I'd stop breathing on my parents, they'd rush me into the hospital, and by the time the doctors got to me, I was fine.

03:04 <Thelema5> Recently?

03:04 <Cepheid> No, this is when I was a baby.

03:04 <Cepheid> Basically, I'd just up and stop breathing.  No explanation was ever found.

03:05 <Thelema5> Oh gosh

03:05 <Cepheid> Because of the way things went, my mother was accused of being afflicted with whatever that syndrome is called.

03:05 <DerpyBot> New post on Equestria Daily by ExplodingPonyToast: Music: Turquoise Splash - So Much Left To See [Acoustic] [ http://tinyurl.com/y74e526d ]

03:05 <Cepheid> It wasn't until the hospital kept me overnight with a nurse next to me.

03:05 <Cepheid> Even *THEN* they almost missed it.

03:05 <Cepheid> The nurse got bored watching me, and it wasn't until my mother pointed out that I was turning blue.

03:05 <Schism> Munschausen-by-proxy?

03:05 <Cepheid> Then the hospital realized they made a mistake.  According to my mother, she never did get an apology from the hospital for the accusations.

03:06 <Cepheid> They still treated my mother with disdain afterwards.

03:06 <Cepheid> They never did find out what caused it, though.  As I sort of just "grew out of it" so to speak.

03:06 <Schism> People hate admitting that they're wrong, even when shown the facts.

03:06 <Schism> Especially, even.

03:06 <Cepheid> They ran tests on me for everything they could think of.  Aneurysms, meningitis, cystic fibrosis, asthma, you name it, they checked for it.

03:07 <Cepheid> Every test came back inconclusive.

03:07 <Thelema5> It's a mystery

03:08 <Cepheid> This was just one of a few issues I had as a child.

03:08 <Cepheid> I'm honestly surprised I am still alive.

03:09 <Thelema5> Speaking of which, my broken rib is making it very hard for me to breathe right now

03:09 * Schism errghs. Offers Thelema5 some oxygen, maybe. ._. "If it keeps getting worse..."

03:10 <Thelema5> Yeah

03:10 <Schism> If it makes you feel better, a bit of silly news: a shark was stolen from an aquarium on Saturday.

03:11 <Schism> The enterprising thieves yanked the shark from the water, swaddled it in towels and smuggled it out in a baby carrier.

03:11 <Thelema5> O.o

03:11 <PinkieShy> Going to get a coffee maker from my brother tomorrow :)

03:12 <Schism> Sadly, the shark is unlikely to survive, but it's one of those stories that makes you go, 'what?'  http://tinyurl.com/yd6nrm8g

03:12 <PinkieShy> I'll take that surely

03:12 <PinkieShy> and use it for tea XD

03:12 <Schism> PinkieShy: Not bad.  Is it a pod coffeemaker, or a drip one?

03:13 <PinkieShy> Its one of the drip ones :)

03:13 <Schism> At that price point, I take it, a Black & Decker or something similar?

03:14 <Thelema5> You can't beat that.

03:14 <Schism> And indeed!

03:14 <ADragonDreaming> Aaaayyy, Large Ember

03:14 <Thelema5> Although lately I've been hearing a lot about pour-over coffee and cold-brew.  I drink a cold brew coffee concentrate in flax milk every morning, it's good.

03:18 <ADragonDreaming> oh right, Laurentius

03:24 * Cepheid is hungry.

03:25 <Schism> Eggs.

03:26 <Schism> Plop an egg into the cup noodles?

03:27 <Thelema5> Classic combo

03:27 <Schism> Could just whisk the egg, then pour it through a fork into the boiling pot o' noodles.

03:27 <Thelema5> Egg drop noodle soup

03:27 <Thelema5> Oh, hey... there's a field mouse in here

03:27 * Schism huhs. o.o

03:28 * Cepheid gives that a try.

03:28 <Thelema5> I'll never catch it with gout and a broken rib... where are my cats?

03:28 <Thelema5> Probably.

03:29 <Thelema5> Although my pet sitter /did/ report that my cats had caught a mouse while I was away and left it for her

03:29 <Thelema5> So I guess one or the other managed to do some work

03:30 <Cepheid> The mice in our place have finally stopped.

03:30 <Cepheid> Dad closed up the holes, and we killed all of the mice.

03:30 <Thelema5> Nice.

03:31 <Thelema5> This guy probably made its way in from the garage door, I'd love to get him back outside before the cats find him... I usually catch them with a net, but that's not going to happen tonight

03:32 <Cepheid> That's how the mice in our place got in, yeah.

03:32 <Cepheid> Through the garage door.  It doesn't close tightly, so mice can cram themselves in.

03:32 <Thelema5> Same.  The kicker is that I just replaced that door two years ago

03:32 <Cepheid> They're still trying to get in though.  There's evidence of tampering with the filler in the holes by something small and bitey.

03:32 <Thelema5> Time for some fox urine

06:24 <Cepheid> Heh.

06:26 <Cepheid> And people comment that older console games have less bugs than modern ones.

06:27 <Schism> Clearly, none of them have ever played Action 52.

06:28 <ConfusionRift> There's a difference between bugs by mistake, and bugs by design. :P

06:29 <Schism> The math holds up in that more complex games have more room for bugs to creep in, but then modern QA testing is a bit more severe... usually.

06:29 <ConfusionRift> And I kinda agree with them in a way.

06:29 <Schism> Doesn't help that these days, developers think they can release day-0 patches and get away with it.

06:30 <Cepheid> Arguably, the day-0 patch has a benefit to it.

06:30 <Cepheid> There is a point where development is usually stopped to start producing final release copies, etc.

06:31 <Cepheid> However, bugs can creep in even *AFTER* that point.

06:31 <Cepheid> Rather than sit around twiddling our thumbs until the actual release day, it's better to keep working on the product.

06:31 <ConfusionRift> Older games were more simple in design and function, which led to fewer bugs to work with. Now, the major bugs that occurred in said games were terrible. From game breaking, to even data corrupting.

06:32 <Schism> I know, I know.  There's a reason there were like 12 different versions of FFVI on the SNES.  (And some of them introduced more bugs.)  https://tcrf.net/Final_Fantasy_VI/Revisional_Differences

06:32 <Cepheid> Bugs in older games had similar problems, ConfusionRift.

06:32 <Cepheid> It's not explicitly restricted to modern games.

06:33 <Schism> No, he said those older games had those breaking bugs.

06:33 <ConfusionRift> I was referring to older games.

06:33 <Cepheid> Oh, I misread.

06:33 <Schism> Here's looking at you, Sketch!

06:33 <Cepheid> About the only thing I don't agree with is forced updates.

06:34 <Cepheid> But in a sense, those existed even in earlier PC games.

06:34 <Cepheid> Want to play Doom with your buddies?  Nope, gotta all be at the same version to play.

06:35 <ConfusionRift> Fun fact: DK64 didn't really need the memory expansion to work. However, they did find bug of sorts that only occurred while running without it. They couldn't find a solution, and were never able to fix this issue. So they decided to ship all copies with the expansion included, which was a very expensive resolve.

06:36 <Schism> At least the expansion pack really shone when it came to Majora's Mask.

06:36 <Schism> Buuut yeah.  Talk about a ridiculous fix.

06:36 <ConfusionRift> Yep.

06:39 <Cepheid> That implies there was a memory access out of the bounds of the system memory, but within the bounds of system memory + expansion pack memory.

06:40 <Cepheid> What kind of access, hard to say.  If it's a write/read, then it'd PROBABLY be fine.  If it was just a read, then there exists the potential for garbage data being used somewhere.

06:46 <ConfusionRift> Here's the thing, it wasn't a consistent issue. It would just randomly freeze, hence why it proved difficult to find and solve.

06:49 <ConfusionRift> Normally, even with memory issues, it's known to have some consistency because there are certain points when the game's memory saturates. Like, slowdowns when doing a panoramic sweep with the camera's view. In such points, games tend to render more objects while removing some out of view, so read/write is more frequent.

06:50 <ConfusionRift> In this case, you could be doing anything, and the game just decides to freeze.

06:50 <Cepheid> Memory allocation/usage issues can crop up at any given time, due to memory fragmentation.

06:50 <Schism> Some sort of race issue with garbage collection?

06:50 <ConfusionRift> True.

06:51 <Cepheid> Not necessarily.

06:51 <Schism> Well, as a hypothetical possibility.

06:51 <Schism> Meh, I'm tired tho.

06:51 <Cepheid> Fragmentation of memory is similar to how fragmentation of files on a drive works.  Basically, as you allocate and de-allocate memory, smaller and smaller chunks of available memory will be left behind.

06:52 <Cepheid> Eventually, you will reach a point where, even though you have enough free memory available to allocate say, a 4kB chunk of memory, it'll fail.

06:52 <Cepheid> Because the largest chunk that is free in memory may only be 1kB.

06:52 <ConfusionRift> The other problem was, as far as I know, console games at that point were debugged by console. So if the game freezes, all functions would halt, making it harder to spot.

06:52 <Cepheid> Games are still debugged by console.

06:52 <Cepheid> On consoles, anyways.

06:53 <Cepheid> You think Sony, Nintendo and the like would actually implement an emulator for their consoles for developers to test with?

06:53 <Schism> It is devoutly wished.

06:54 <Cepheid> Unfortunately, that's not the case.  As far as I understand it, you do an initial transfer of all the resources to a devkit console, then transmit the application to it and execute the application.

06:54 <Cepheid> Further tests involve simply rebuilding and transmitting the code to the devkit.

06:54 <Schism> Trick, tho, is that consoles often use such a specific variety of hardware, oftentimes proprietary (I'm looking at you, of course, Nintendo), that VMs of that nature wouldn't really work anyway.

06:55 <Cepheid> Sony's also known for proprietary setups.

06:55 <Cepheid> Look at the Cell processor of the PS3.

06:55 <Schism> Good point.

06:55 <Cepheid> The problem with console development is that in order to achieve the performance they get with the hardware available to them, is that they need to use highly customized setups.

06:55 <Schism> Well, TBF it's more like Microsoft was the only console manufacturer to not use primarily proprietary hardware.

06:55 <Cepheid> Components are integrated in ways that they normally wouldn't be.

06:55 <ConfusionRift> Nothing beats the hassle that was the N64... sorry, IS.

06:56 <Schism> And yeup...

06:56 <Cepheid> Like an x86_64 processor having direct access to GDDR5 memory instead of typical DDR3/DDR4 memory.

06:56 <Schism> ConfusionRift: I think Ted Woolsey might take exception to that.

06:56 <Cepheid> That is a setup you will *NEVER* see in PCs.

06:56 <Cepheid> GDDR memory is designed for graphics processing, not general-purpose stuff.  Changes how software development is done, even if the CPU is an Intel-compatible chip.

06:57 <ConfusionRift> Schism: It's still a difficult system to replicate and emulate.

06:58 <Cepheid> Same with the gamecube, wii, wii U, etc, etc, etc.

06:58 <Cepheid> If anything, the simplest devices to emulate have been their handhelds.

06:58 <Cepheid> GB, GBA, DS, 3DS, and so on.

06:59 <Cepheid> I'm not so sure about the Switch.  It's still an ARM system, but it's a customized ARM system created by nVidia.  You could probably get away with "emulating" a Switch on a Tegra X1, but..

07:00 <Cepheid> No one's gonna go out and buy a Tegra X1 devkit just for that.  ANd it's a stupid idea.

07:00 <Schism> I'm given to understand that the N64 also remains a fun time because many of the games had specific chips, co-processors et al. inside the cartridges themselves.  There wasn't as wide an array of options for the SNES, or for that matter the NES.

07:01 <Cepheid> Admittedly, that is the benefit of the cartridge era.

07:01 * ConfusionRift nods.

07:01 <Cepheid> You could install extra chips into the cartridges to achieve certain effects not viable upon the base hardware.

07:01 <Cepheid> Nowadays, you'd need like, a docking system or something similar to achieve the same effect.

07:02 <Cepheid> But who would come up with something like that?

07:02 <ConfusionRift> Unfortunately, what's done is done. Not like you could revise a cartridge that's already released.

07:02 <Schism> Oh, it was certainly a good thing for developers of the time, just makes it so that instead of emulating a single system and the hardware inside (or multiple similar revisions, like the SCPH7xxx library), you would need to emulate those chips as well.

07:02 * ConfusionRift looks at the SD2SNES. "But that's different!"

07:03 <Schism> Same root cause for why it took so long.

07:03 <Cepheid> I wonder if Nintendo designed the Switch with the dock as it was for the sole purpose of providing "upgrade hardware" at a later date.

07:03 <Cepheid> Slot the Switch into a dock with some extra hardware for stuff like better rendering, etc.

07:04 <Cepheid> Delegate the Switch Tegra X1 to background duty stuff.

07:04 * Schism takes out an old console which has a lovely touchpad keyboard and two one-button 'mice', and a robot on-screen which almost but isn't quite like a R.O.B.

07:04 * Schism then inserts one or two expansion games for it.

07:04 <Cepheid> I was thinking more "A dock with super-powered hardware for rendering at 4k."

07:05 <ConfusionRift> Then again, the Wii U had a docking charger as well. My guess is they would rather have the console docked instead of having it in the open with a wire on the floor for someone to trip on.

07:05 <Schism> Oh, I know what you meant, I was just musing over the past.

07:05 <RazorSharpFang> Has anyone here played Octopath traveller?

07:05 * Schism points at Cepheid.

07:05 <Cepheid> I have it, I'm still working on it.

07:05 * ConfusionRift points at Cepheid as well.

07:05 <RazorSharpFang> Would you say it's worth its opening price?

07:05 <Cepheid> YEs.

07:06 <Cepheid> It starts off slow, depending on what you want to do, but it picks up.

07:06 <RazorSharpFang> Is it a classic JRPG?

07:06 <Cepheid> If you mean turn-based style, then yes.

07:06 <Cepheid> None of this fancy-smancy ATB system.

07:07 <Cepheid> And the art style is definitely reminiscent of Romancing SaGa, and other games of that era.

07:07 <RazorSharpFang> Random encounters?

07:07 <Cepheid> Yes.

07:07 <RazorSharpFang> Extremely high offense to defense ratios?

07:07 <Cepheid> That's a bit different.  The game definitely encourages abusing weaknesses.

07:08 <Cepheid> So much so that in combat, you'll have a horizontal "list" of squares underneath each enemy.  Initially they all start off as "?"

07:08 <Cepheid> If you hit a weakness, it records the weakness for later reminder.

07:08 <Cepheid> While you can brute-force your way, it's in your interest to hit weaknesses.

07:09 <Cepheid> After a certain number of weakness strikes(Denoted by a number in a shield to the left of the weakness list), the enemy enters a Break state.  It causes them to lose a turn, and reduces their defensive stats dramatically.

07:09 <Cepheid> Like, the difference between doing ~150 damage, to ~500.

07:09 <RazorSharpFang> Do all entities get a turn per turn?

07:09 <Cepheid> Yes, all characters get one turn per round of battle.

07:09 <Cepheid> And it's visible as to who will go next.

07:10 <RazorSharpFang> What predicates who gets turn order?

07:10 <Cepheid> Speed stat, I believe.  Don't hold me to that though, I haven't experimented.

07:10 <Cepheid> There may be some variance to it, too.

07:11 <Cepheid> Overall, it seems to be a mixture of a speed stat, plus whatever attack you last used, for determining the order in the next round.

07:11 <Cepheid> But hey, you get to beat up random townspeople all you want.

07:12 <Cepheid> The Warrior and the Hunter characters have a "Challenge" ability that allows you to challenge townspeople to duels.

07:12 <Cepheid> You lose, not much happens other than your HP being reduced to 0.

07:12 <Cepheid> Er, 1*

07:13 <Cepheid> You win?  Mostly just a comment from the character, and seeing them laying on the ground with stars going around their head.  Some quests encourage you to beat someone up to progress the quest.

07:14 <Schism> Wanna bet the weapons and armor you use also influence initiative?

07:15 <Cepheid> Given that such equipment raises or lowers speed, that's a given.

07:16 <Cepheid> The problem with weaponclass doing that though is... tricky.

07:16 <Cepheid> You can equip multiple weapons.

07:16 <Schism> Ah, alright.  I'd thought that, as it's a Squeenix game, it'd be a hidden stat you'd have to puzzle out on your own through relentless experimentation.

07:16 <Cepheid> You can, for example, have a dagger, axe, and a staff equipped all at once.  You switch between them before using a physical attack.

07:17 <Cepheid> So if initiative is dependent on weapon, it becomes the question of "which weapon?"

07:18 <Schism> Do you queue everyone's actions at start of turn?

07:19 <Cepheid> No, it's "character's turn pops up.  select action, it's performed immediately."

07:22 <Cepheid> One thing about the game that shocked me, though.

07:23 <Cepheid> If you set the Switch OS language to another language, including Japanese, the game will play in that language for all the text.

07:23 <Cepheid> I'm not sure if it's specific to the game, or if it's a new OS feature, because the only other game I have that does that is Touhou Genso Wanderer.

07:24 <Cepheid> I tried Xenoblade 2, with no luck.  It still used English text.

07:33 <Cepheid> Also released today:  Chasm.

07:39 <ConfusionRift> 0_0;

07:40 <ConfusionRift> Darn it!

07:40 <Cepheid> Hmm?

07:40 * ConfusionRift adds to wishlist.

07:40 <Cepheid> I have it already because I paid for it back in, oh...

07:40 <Cepheid> 2014, I think?

07:41 <RazorSharpFang> Lmao, just got a call from Alinta energy regarding the installment of Solar Panels. I don't own a house to install them on. :P

07:42 <Cepheid> Install them on your pets!

07:42 * Cepheid installs solar panel samurai armour on his cat.

07:42 <Schism> Oh yeah, RSF.  Malcolm Turnbull ate a pie... with a fork and knife.

07:43 <RazorSharpFang> Okay, but I do that.

07:43 <Schism> Well, you're both evil then.  :P

07:43 <RazorSharpFang>

07:43 * Schism jokes, of course. One eats a pie as one desires.

07:43 * Cepheid eats pizza with a knife and fork.

07:43 * Schism gasps in horror.

07:43 <Schism> You probably stack your slices, too, don't you.

07:43 <Cepheid> No.

07:44 <Cepheid> Truth told, I only do it with reheated pizza.

07:44 <RazorSharpFang> Cut a pizza into 8 slices, stack them all into a single stack, eat the stack like a triangular burger.

07:44 <Cepheid> Or particularly messy pizzas.  *Coughs* Anything with lots of cheese *Coughs*

07:44 <Cepheid> You mean like that monstrosity that Boston Pizza(A Canadian place, ironically), serves?

07:44 * Schism anyhoos. Pokes at La*Mulana for a bit. The remake of the first game, that is.

07:45 <Cepheid> Oh, I guess they don't serve it anymore.

07:45 <Cepheid> They had this one item, it was basically like, six or seven pizzas stacked atop one another.

08:15 <Cepheid> .. You know, I just noticed something.

08:16 <Cepheid> My schedule is set up perfectly to be doing TAing.

08:22 <RazorSharpFang> You tweeted about TAing, right?

08:24 <Schism> Alright, game.  I've gotten some more weights.  Now lemme get enough gold for the freakin' GLYPH READER.

08:24 <Cepheid> Basically, my name was put forward for a TA position.

08:25 <Cepheid> They want me to TA for Fundamentals of Web Applications.

08:25 <Cepheid> I'm guessing not enough people signed up to TA the course, and I know why.

08:25 <RazorSharpFang> So, client-server arch, HTTP request/response headers, eh?

08:26 <Cepheid> Some of that, yes.  Mostly it's just JavaScript programming, with a bit of databases and some Node.js and a few frameworks.

08:26 <RazorSharpFang> Node.js, eh... I don't like how all of the APIs are async.

08:26 <RazorSharpFang> Causes spaghetti code.

08:27 <Cepheid> That's not specific to Node.js.

08:27 <Cepheid> Browser implementations are also async.

08:27 <RazorSharpFang> Yeah, it's Javascript.

08:28 <RazorSharpFang> I'm just not a fan of Javascript's approach.

08:30 <Cepheid> I'm not fond of it either.  In fact, a majority of the students hated the course because of JavaScript.  And the project.

08:31 <Cepheid> I hear a lot of complaints about the course for various reasons.  People simply do not like it, and don't want to take it, but it's required.

08:31 <RazorSharpFang> I'd say the Async stuff only makes sense in the context of the browser.

08:31 <Cepheid> Eh, it kind of makes sense on the Node.js side as well.

08:31 <Cepheid> You don't want to lock up the main thread doing work.

08:32 <Cepheid> So you make an asynchronous call to a function, with some sort of callback set for when it's done.

08:32 <RazorSharpFang> Right, but ALL of ALL of the functions are async.

08:32 <Cepheid> There are synchronous variants.

08:32 <Cepheid> Last I checked, anyways.

08:33 <RazorSharpFang> I found a lot of things that would ordinarily be easier in a synchronous style to be spaghetti-code in Node.

08:33 <Cepheid> But yeah, in general, asynchronous programming is a pain in the rear.

08:33 <Cepheid> But in many places, it's needed.

08:33 <Cepheid> You're likely to experience it a lot in GUI-based applications.

08:34 <RazorSharpFang> Async methods for the server handlings make sense, because you're dealing with networkings, which come and go whenever. But if I have a set of things to do in-order, async methods are a pain.

08:34 <Cepheid> Usually the front-facing GUI is ran on one thread, often called the Main or Render Thread.  In order to keep it "snappy" you use concurrency to perform tasks in the background.

08:35 <RazorSharpFang> Like I said, Async methods make sense in the browser, as for all GUIs, and network operations. For everything, it's a pain.

08:36 <Cepheid> It continues to get worse, these days.

08:37 <Cepheid> Asynchronous operations are so prevalent in various applications, there are entire subsystems, keywords and APIs designed for it.

08:37 <RazorSharpFang> While I was using node, I kept thinking "This would be so much easier using Python"

08:37 <Cepheid> Simplest one is the concept of coroutines.  Next up you got asynchronous calls.  Next up you got threads.

08:37 <RazorSharpFang> I've found Async in C# to be much more pleasant in comparison.

08:38 <Cepheid> I think the absolute worst form of async is... callback hell.

08:43 <RazorSharpFang> I think every node.js project I've worked on entered callback hell.

08:44 <Cepheid> In any case, I'm TAing for the class because I'm pretty sure I know who requested me, and I hold too much respect for them.

08:44 <Cepheid> Though they could do with a proofreader or five.

08:46 <Cepheid> Ow.

08:46 <Cepheid> I have had my head angled down for so long that straightening it out hurt.

09:20 <Schism> La-Mulana.  64 HP is what you have after precisely one Life Crystal.

09:20 <Cepheid> Ah.

09:20 <Cepheid> I actually haven't played that game.  Watched an LP of it though.

09:20 <Cepheid> Didn't get any of the story, though.

09:21 <Schism> Adventurer archaeologist goes into an ancient ruin in search of fabled treasure, winds up discovering the old civilizations are a bit more involved than expected, nearly dooms world.

09:21 <Schism> That's the bare basics, I won't really spoil more.  :S  Anyway, this is the first boss players usually find.

09:22 <Cepheid> I'm familiar with the bare basics.

09:22 <Cepheid> I also understand that the whole temple is basically a non-euclidean monster.

09:24 <Cepheid> When I design and implement a game with an inventory system such that you can place items in your inventory into other containers, and then place those containers..

09:25 <Cepheid> I'm making it so that the barrel-within-a-barrel scenario has an interesting effect other than blinking stuff out of existence or crashing the game.

09:26 <Schism> Catball!

09:26 <Cepheid> You'll need to be more specific.

09:26 <Schism> There's a cat-onna-ball enemy in the gam.e

09:26 <Schism> game.*  It tends to be frustrating to work around, like everything else in the game.

09:26 <Cepheid> Heh.

09:28 <Cepheid> Barrel-within-barrel mechanic:  For each similar container that you place within one another, the capacity of that container gets smaller.  So for example, you place a 3x3 item box inside a 3x3 item box.  The box inside now has a capacity of 2x2.  Place a 3x3 box in that 2x2 container, the box inside the 2x2 container has a capacity of 1x1.

09:28 <Cepheid> And container-within-itself?  YASD.

09:28 <Cepheid> Or any such similar cycle.

09:30 <Cepheid> Alternatively, it's a YASD, but you get a warning beforehand.

09:30 <Cepheid> You attempt it, and the Deity of Logic puffs into existence and gives you a stern warning not to do it.  Follow by popping out of existence.

09:31 <Cepheid> And between popping in and popping out is exactly one turn, giving you a chance to attack said deity and start a battle to commit deicide.

09:52 <ConfusionRift> Sounds familiar.

23:51 <DerpyBot> Twilight told me this video is about Imagine Dragons - Radioactive

23:51 <Schism> I was thinking more of a British meal.

23:51 <Snapai> idk then

23:51 <Schism> Fission chips.

23:52 <Snapai> Schism - because everyone I've heard talk about active listening is all, worry about your posture, make eye contact with the person, repeat what they say, all sorts of focus on what you're doing.

23:52 <Snapai> oh pft

23:52 <Schism> Active listening of that nature can also be described as mirror-matching.

23:53 <Snapai> But the article says what's important is making an effort to understand what the person is saying, free of your own biases, and without trying to manipulate

23:53 <Snapai> Much closer to *how I study books* - assuming imperfect communication and attempting to figure out what the author was trying to convey.

23:54 <Snapai> All the "smile, have a good posture, etc" is just to keep in mind how your own behavior may distract a live speaker from communicating effectively.

23:55 <Snapai> IE, it doesn't matter if you're capable of listening while checking your phone, it comes off as being distracted. Try to counteract Resting B[uffalo] Face by making a conscious effort to smile slightly when listening, etc.

23:56 <Snapai> (What brought me to the "active listening" articles is that I was looking up articles on making others feel good and there is a LOT of overlap in the advice)

23:56 <Cepheid> I'd make eye contact more if I didn't need to read lips.

23:57 <Cepheid> Apparently doing so is unnerving.

23:57 * Schism noddles! "That's kinda where I come in, too -- where following the other person's body language also puts them more at ease."

23:57 <Snapai> Eye contact ruins my ability to listen somewhat, and can be read as aggression, so glancing at the person's expression occasionally while listening will have to do.

23:58 <Snapai> That's probably the sort of eye contact they mean anyways. Just occasionally make/break eye contact to make it clear you haven't completely drifted off.

23:59 <Snapai> Aaaaand the articles on "how to make people feel good/special/happy" spin off of reading about toxicity and toxic people.

23:59 <Cepheid> Mm.

23:59 <Cepheid> Yeah rule #1: don't read toxic *YAY*.

23:59 <Snapai> (incidentally, most of the articles about making people feel good mention this as "charisma" even though we usually think of a suave con artist or social butterfly when we hear that word)
