03:42 <Schism> That's if we survive long enough to produce BTL sims.
03:42 <Cepheid> With machine learning growing in popularity, because of it's effectiveness, it's only a matter of time before something akin to The World, with it's black box, becomes reality.
03:42 <Cepheid> We even have the headset stuff.

03:49 <Cepheid> That, and to ensure that development of whatever I am creating continues beyond death.
03:49 <Schism> Lo, bow down before the everliving hand.
03:50 <Cepheid> Truth told, I have a lot of ideas in my head, that, if I were to express them in this day and age, I would be considered a psychopath.
03:51 <Schism> Does it start with body shops, and end with nanobots and paperclips?
03:51 <Ali> /me bonks Schism, she doesn't own starbound
03:51 <Cepheid> I'm already causing trouble with the family by discussing things I normally wouldn't discuss, because I know my views would cause controversy.
03:51 <Ali> Other cats headbonk, mine shove their butt in my face...
03:52 <Cepheid> Case in point, I'm pretty sure I'm an architectural philistine.
03:52 <Cepheid> I see no legitimate reason to maintain the old architectural buildings of the city.
03:52 <Schism> Cepheid: The thing is, we all have those thoughts. Those ideas, those idiotic ... strange... mad ideas. We don't express them, regularly, but we all have them. When you see a cliff, you wonder what it'd be like to jump, right?
03:52 <Ali> Sometimes, but I'm scared of heights
03:52 * DashedRainbows licks Ali till she's soaked
03:52 <Schism> Well, yeah. I'd imagine jumping, but I'd step back.
03:53 * Ali squeaks at DashedRainbows
03:53 <Cepheid> I'm not talking those kinds of thoughts, Schism. I do have them, but I usually suppress them most of the time.
03:53 <Schism> Also, Cepheid: Are you... proposing a brutalist revival?
03:53 <Cepheid> I'm talking more like the idea of simply demolishing the existing Chateau Laurier and building something more functionally useful and efficient in it's place. Or demolishing the Parliament buildings for the same reason.
03:54 <Cepheid> I don't really have any architectural style preference.
03:54 <Schism> Definitely a Brutalist revivalist. You monster! :P
03:54 <Cepheid> But I don't really thing it's worth the time, money and effort to maintain and retrofit older buildings.
03:54 <Schism> Cepheid: The idea of Brutalism was simple, clean efficiency, above all else.
03:54 <Cepheid> Especially as the cost to maintain them keeps increasing every yhear.
03:54 <Schism> Forget all the gargoyles and artistry and facades, put Parliament in a nice, clean concrete cube.
03:55 <Schism> Windows are optional. As are air filters.
03:55 <Cepheid> That said, my parents and sister disagree with my view. They think the culture, the history behind the buildings is worth something.
03:55 <Schism> I'm being silly, of course.
03:55 <Cepheid> It's not.
03:56 <Schism> It kinda is, but only in the sense that it increases the visible worth of the building, and by extension, those within.
03:56 <Schism> There's a sociological aspect there.
03:56 <Schism> Pity that those within don't seem intent on increasing their own worth.
03:57 * Cepheid shrugs.
03:58 <Schism> Such is politics.
03:58 <Cepheid> In any case, this kind of thought tends to apply specifically only to architecture.
03:58 <Schism> Nonsense. Art galleries tend to be a white elephant in and of themselves.
03:58 <Cepheid> No matter how historically significant the building is to Canadians everywhere, if it's in the way, or serves no purpose, it is better repurposed by removing it and placing something useful on the land.
03:59 <Schism> The question then becomes: when does history become irrelevant compared to, say, a nice bit of park space?
04:00 *** Quits: Pony|14764 (Pony14764@Pony-i454b4.cable.virginm.net) (Quit: http://www.kiwiirc.com/ - A hand crafted IRC client)
04:00 <Cepheid> Given how quick we are to demolish more recent existing buildings and replace them with something else, not very long.
04:01 <Cepheid> I'll be honest, a bit of my thought patterns regarding all of this is driven by a few different factors. How many buildings are left unused, how many buildings are not being used to their full capacity, and housing costs.
04:02 <Schism> Let's not forget how ridiculous the suburbs are.
04:02 <Cepheid> There are quite a few empty, derelict buildings in Ottawa, some of them historical in nature. They're not being used for anything, and simply take up space, space that could be used for something else.
04:02 <Cepheid> Or they're not being used to capacity.
04:03 <Schism> I'm not going to demand arcologies, but if you look at suburbs in general, they are INSANE. The amount of space used is beyond crazy.
04:03 <Schism> And the water use for those lawns.
04:05 <Schism> Inner cities absolutely need some renovations, those old buildings, some of which are both A. historical and B. decrepit.

04:06 <Cepheid> Mmhmm.
04:06 <Cepheid> Alas, it is not to be.
04:07 <Cepheid> Right now, Ottawa is currently focused on doing something about the bicycle situation.
04:07 <Cepheid> The lack of bike paths, and the increasing number of accidents involving cars hitting bicycles.
04:08 <Cepheid> There was a major incident a couple weeks back. Kid got hit by a car, because there's no safe spot to cross the spot he was trying to cross.
04:08 <Cepheid> Also, cars speed up far too early before merging onto the highway at that spot.
04:08 <Cepheid> In a more recent news story, there's a separate turning lane for bikes on one of the streets.
04:08 <Cepheid> Cars have been using that turning lane.

04:09 <Cepheid> Like, regularly.

15:51 <Cepheid> Hum. CCP is screwing around with Eve.
15:51 <Schism> It's not like they have a specific monopoly -- I'm not sure that term even applies when they're basically subsidized -- but they are pretty much the biggest blood testing group in Ontario.
15:51 <Schism> Oh? Not that this comes as a surprise, but what does the biggest MUD out there have in store next?
15:52 <Cepheid> They are working to make it more chaotic. Less safe for players to do stuff, especially the ones who go around killing other players and/or fighting wars.
15:52 <Schism> Sounds like a good change.
15:53 <Schism> I am quite serious when I call EVE a MUD, too.
15:53 <Cepheid> Tax hikes to encourage using player stations, since their gold sinks aren't working as expected. Removing lists of users in a system to prevent players from looking for targets in relative safety. Powerful NPC factions to screw with nullsec and wormhole space players and player factions.
15:54 <Schism> Hmmmmm. Well, the game's been driven by PvP for the longest time, so introducing another PvE element makes it a little more game-like.
15:54 <Cepheid> They recently had a massive assault of an unknown NPC faction destriy a bunch of player-built stations and facilities.
15:54 <Schism> Undoubtedly, those players thought they were safe. <trollface>
15:54 <Cepheid> It threw the player factions into a frenzy.
15:54 <Cepheid> More or less actually.
15:55 <Cepheid> Many of these factions were fighting PvP battles, and suddenly had to divert their war fronts back to their core systems.
15:55 <Schism> I'll not be watching the backlash, I've got enough on my plate with the crafting frenzy in FFXIV.
15:55 <Schism> Heee.
15:55 <Cepheid> Basically, CCP is trying to reduce the order that the game has diverged to.
15:55 <Schism> That does sound delightful, though. It's kind of what the ATITD devs would do.
15:56 <Cepheid> Er, converged*
15:56 <Schism> No, 'diverged' is the right term too.
15:56 <Cepheid> One of the devs wants to remove a feature that player factions rely on to protect their assets.
15:56 <Ali> And then sell it back to you!
15:56 <Schism> Nah, they're not that venal.
15:57 <Cepheid> In nullsec, if a structure is destroyed, its item contents of it are packaged up and sent to the nearest station.
15:57 <Ali> You want controller vibrations? That's a $9.99 microtransaction
15:57 <Schism> Call CCP what you want, but despite selling a $50 monocle to player characters, they're pretty good about being fair.
15:57 <Cepheid> It's time consuming and costly, but it acts as asset protection against theft, etc.
15:57 * Schism nodnods to Cepheid. "And asset protection is kind of a problem."
15:58 <Cepheid> Yeah. CCP is pretty fair. You can play a free version which has quite a bit, but your skills and equipment are limited, and your skill teaining rate is 1/2 that of a paid account.
15:59 * Ali puts Cepheid and Schism on guard duty as she plays Factorio
15:59 <Cepheid> Their paid accounts say it is twice the speed of a free account, which is true, but it isnt twice the original learning speed. In fact, its the original learning speed.
15:59 <Schism> Yup.
15:59 <Schism> I missed the endless salt from the old players when they doubled the learning speed.
15:59 <Cepheid> But yeah. I pay for it and play it because it fits that space trucking and mining itch.
16:00 <Cepheid> Which, ironically, that itch is why I am making my current game.
16:00 <Schism> Yeah, but ATITD and EVE are pure politics, and you hate politics.
16:00 <Cepheid> I want a non-mmo EVE.
16:00 <Schism> Hum. I'd say Elite: Dangerous, but you've done that one.
16:00 <Cepheid> Not that. I just want a game where I can do all the same stuff, but without ahole players who kill me for giggles.
16:01 <Cepheid> Elite Dangerous is... Weird.
16:01 <Cepheid> It's economy isn't really dependent on player actions.
16:01 <Cepheid> What you deliver isn't used to produce anything and such.
16:01 <Cepheid> I want production chains involved.
16:01 <Schism> It's almost a shame that Star Control 2 has a timer on it, because I could just sink into the world and never leave.
16:01 <Schism> But yeah.
16:02 <Schism> Cepheid: With specific resources provided by planets!
16:02 <Reiko> All i want from #EquestriaDaily is nothing
16:02 <Cepheid> So I am creating a game where production chains are involved, among other things.
16:02 <Schism> Create a chain of planets where you travel between using Navigators addicted to the Spice and-- wait, crap.
16:02 <Cepheid> I'm still trying to figure out how large I want the game world.
16:03 <Cepheid> Since the problem gets intractable at large system counts.

16:04 <Cepheid> Avorion for example, can have a few thousand systems, but they are dynamically generated as the player moves around. It creates a computational problem too, since as the number of active systems increases, more work needs to be done.
16:04 <Cepheid> The endresult is that the game limits the number of active sectors for simulation. Which can result in broken production chains.
16:04 <Schism> Scaling works out alright. You make the basic aspects readily attainable within every single system, and give them specific materials for midgame/endgame, so that the player then has to transport materials across larger areas as they scale up.
16:04 <Schism> Ah yes.
16:05 <Cepheid> A better idea would be to limit the number of systems to a small number, then process all of them.
16:05 <Cepheid> X3 for example, has about 40 to 60 sectors or so.
16:06 <Schism> For a singleplayer game, leave it to those systems the player has not only visited, but left at least a base on, and leave the rest of the systems to some nebulous economy.
16:06 <Cepheid> I'm thinking make the number of systems configurable. It won't reproduce a galaxy, but it can create a large enough world to explore.
16:06 <Cepheid> Then spread the processing work out to multiple cores.
16:06 <Schism> Making use of multithreading? Why, that's blasphemy.
16:06 <Cepheid> The upper limit being some number of systems per core.
16:07 <Schism> (I know, not the same thing.)
16:07 <Cepheid> Alternatively, do what you suggested, combined with what X3 does.
16:07 <Cepheid> When a player leaves a sector in X3, the simulation speed is considerably reduced.
16:08 * Schism nods, "With occasional ticks, to denote progress."
16:08 <Cepheid> Inatead of X updates a second, it becomes X updates per N seconds. 1 update per 5 seconds in X.
16:08 <Schism> That still seems a little bit much.
16:08 <Schism> I'd push an update each minute for the global economy.
16:08 <Cepheid> It worked for 40-60 systems on 2 cores.
16:09 <Cepheid> The issue is processing ships.
16:09 <Cepheid> The longer the time between steps, the more concerns there are with ships colliding with ojects or tunneling.
16:10 <Cepheid> Of course I can think of one way to fix that.
16:10 <Schism> Pare things down. Reduce a ship that the player's not using to a set of stats - here's how much cargo they can hold, here's how much mass they can push. When the player's in the sector, let them move along transport lanes.
16:10 <Cepheid> There is that approach, yeah. Approximations based on stats.
16:10 <Schism> Any spacefaring civilization will come up with space roads. o3o
16:11 <Cepheid> You know X ships can move at Y speed. Assuming no objects in the way, it'd take them N seconds to traverse from Gate A to Gate B in this sector.
16:11 <Schism> Exactly. And there may be a limiter based on that, where all ships moving along those freight lines have to follow the slowest speed.
16:11 <Cepheid> Effectively, assume ships avoid objects extemely efficiently.
16:12 <Schism> Or better yet, assume that there's more ships which preclude objects from hitting them.
16:12 <Cepheid> So long as the player can't see the state of things inside the system they are not in..
16:12 <Cepheid> They simply won't know.
16:13 <Schism> Actually, you could make that a game mechanic. Creating drones to police the 'lanes', as it were, to remove any fragments or asteroids which might otherwise impact traders.
16:13 <Cepheid> And by seeing the state of things, I mean they don't have scanners revealing ship positiona and such. Which might reveal the simulation issues.
16:13 <Cepheid> Hmm.
16:14 <Cepheid> Yeah, its true that ideal paths would avoid stuff like asteroid belts. So creating dedicated pathfinding lanes between gates...
16:14 <Cepheid> Anything gets added in that intersects a lane, the system can recalculate it.
16:15 <Schism> Yup. Draw from what we already have in reality, to be honest. No need to reinvent the wheel: space is pretty empty, so I can see a cargo freighter 'lane' demarcated with a host of buoys.
16:15 <Cepheid> Heh.
16:15 <Cepheid> The problem is the algorithm for it.
16:15 <Cepheid> Finding lanes would be tricky. Lot of trig work.
16:16 <Cepheid> The alternative is, again, to just ignore the tunneling problem. The warp drives for intrasystem travel could be a case of moving outside ordinary space.
16:16 <Schism> I'm clearly insane, because I'm thinking, 'Man, that would make a fun little sidequest, placing them down so that the local planet can have a sensible route to the core.'
16:17 <Cepheid> That is, anything using warp ignores physical objecta because they are in a different dimension.
16:17 <Schism> Was kinda assuming that. The problem is when two ships in warp collide.
16:18 <Cepheid> Ignore that risk. Probability of it is lower than hitting a star or planet by several orders of magnitude, which itself is still pretty low.
16:18 <Schism> Oh, Cepheid: http://soundlizard.net/hack/01-senya-ichiya.mp3 - This is the song for which I was looking. Not sure if you can view it on your phone...
16:19 <Cepheid> Too much work to consider that kind of collision for little benefit.
16:19 <Cepheid> I can. No headphones though.
16:19 <Schism> Ah, pity.

16:20 <Cepheid> Hilariously, the reactions to CCPs changes as of late are mixed, but.. silver lining.
16:20 <Schism> Maybe work in a collision - outside the player's immediate view - as a random event. We are, after all, talking about transport lanes, and you're several million times more likely to hit another car on the road than you are just driving across a plain.
16:20 <Cepheid> This has been the best July of the last 5 years, in regards to player counts and such.
16:21 <Schism> I'm still shaking my head over the fact that FFXIV seems to have eclipsed WoW in subs.

16:28 <Schism> Eh. If it teaches you something, it's not wasted time.
16:29 <Schism> Also, this city has the hardest water in Ontario.
16:29 <Cepheid> I legitimately cannot tell the difference in "hardness" of water.

21:43 <Schism> No, that reveal is the first quest.
21:43 <Schism> It doesn't stop the NPC in question from believing that the tiny, three-ilm worm is the Protector of the Greatwood.

21:44 * Jackie rubs Filly_Nightmares' back
21:44 <Cepheid> So an inchworm is the guardian of the Treated.
21:45 <Schism> It's that kind of quest. But at the same time... that really is the protector of the wood.
21:45 * Filly_Nightmares purrs and melts at Jackie
21:45 <Schism> But I shan't say more. It is, however, adorable.
21:46 <Cepheid> Stupid autocorrect.
21:46 <Schism> This is also a thing, Cepheid. https://twitter.com/tuhis_ff14/status/1154050834302304257
21:47 <Cepheid> Heh.
21:51 * Jackie nuzzles snoot
21:51 * DashedRainbows licks Jackie
21:51 * Jackie pats DashedRainbows' head
21:53 <Schism> Tiny worm also goes scree, just like Filly_Nightmares.
21:54 * Filly_Nightmares skrees at Schism and roll!
21:54 * Schism rolls around the channel, like a MNK does.
21:54 * Jackie hugs fluffy bat
21:55 * LibrarianofHope glomps the eeeeeee
21:57 <Schism> Mmm.. delicious honey romano ravioli, tossed in some butter and salt, sprinkled with black pepper. A fine dinner.
22:01 <Jackie> Fn is also a bat though
22:03 <Schism> Koopz: Once you obtain the Great Serpent, be very careful.
22:03 <Jackie> Is Koopz a bat? o3o
22:03 <LibrarianofHope> Filly Nightmares is an eeee bat, scientific name Batus Eeeeeeeius
22:04 * Schism provides Filly_Nightmares wif a lemon wafer.
22:06 <Schism> Picked up a $2 pack of wafers yesterday, they're basically all gone.
22:06 <Schism> /fc *switches to tank, experience bar is purest crimson*
22:10 <DerpyBot> New post on Equestria Daily by Sethisto: BronyCon Press Conference with Lauren Faust and Bonnie Zacherle [ http://tinyurl.com/yxmzbkku ]
22:11 <Jackie> Some info
22:11 <Jackie> Bonnie Zarcherle is the original creator for G1 MLP
22:12 <Jackie> So it's cool to see both her and Lauren
22:14 <LibrarianofHope> that doesnt means he created MLP as in the toy proper or did he?
22:15 <LibrarianofHope> its a fairly simple idea in its core, magic ponies for girls
22:16 <Fn> :3
22:17 <Fn> Original MLP toys didn't sell all that well
22:17 * Jackie pets floofy Fn
22:17 <Fn> This redesign was a welcome one
22:18 <Fn> Gen 1 MLP ponies were... far from cute, let's put it that way
22:18 <Fn> Not resembling a baby foal in shape (which would be an automatic AWWW)
22:19 <Fn> Not resembling a pony either
22:19 <Fn> They looked like ponies with dwarfism
22:22 * Filly_Nightmares lickies Fn
22:22 <LibrarianofHope> it should have been easy, even with the tools of that era
22:23 <Lumindia> o 3o
22:23 * Lumindia does a boop on Jackie's snoot
22:23 <LibrarianofHope> heck, as far as i know selling toys is fairly simple in a broad sense
22:23 <LibrarianofHope> getting a mega hit is harder, but some basic things are universal
22:23 * Jackie licks Lumindia's hoof
22:26 <Fn> MLP was indeed about toy sales, same as those magical bears
22:27 <Fn> I forgot what those were called
22:29 <Lumindia> care bears
22:34 <LibrarianofHope> it still is now, the fact Lauren Faust made them such a masterpiece of a world was probably a very pleasant and lucrative surprise
