17:25 <Cepheid> 100 years prior to the start of the game, an event called the Calamity occurred.  This Calamity was the sinking of a region of the city.  Unfortunately, this also destroyed much of the landscape, and took the Yggdrasil Tree with it.

17:25 <Cepheid> After all was said and done, the pit that was created was then discovered, and called the Yggdrasil Labyrinth.  There was a legend created, of a place called the Deep City.

17:26 <Cepheid> What is mentioned in fragments though is that between the Tree's appearance and the Calamity, technology advanced at an incredible pace.  Basically, machinery, automatons, and the like.  That all disappeared with the Calamity.

17:27 <Cepheid> There are these creatures that lived deep beneath the city of Armoroad, called the Deep Ones.

17:28 <Cepheid> It turns out that these Deep Ones feed on emotional energy, thus, if they were to ever reach the surface, all hell would break loose.

17:29 <Cepheid> Yggdrasil.  Yggdrasil is a freaking alien from outer space.

17:29 <Cepheid> It was chasing after something, and it arrived on the planet to fight it.  It turns out, that this tree is sentient, and speaks with people.  It's where all the technology came from.  The purpose of advancing the society?

17:29 <Cepheid> To fight the Deep Ones and their God.

17:30 <Cepheid> It was chasing the Deep Ones and their God across space, and said God had landed upon the planet.  It was what created the disease that was mutating people.  When the Tree arrived, it cured the people, and gave them technology, along with an edict/order/request:  Help it fight the Deep Ones.

17:30 <Cepheid> During the process, it requested the then-king of Armoroad to sink the city, to push the Deep Ones further into the planet, and fight from the Deep City, to protect the surface.

17:31 <Cepheid> You can help the current Armoroad to fight the Deep Ones, or side with the Deep City and help them fight.

17:31 <Cepheid> If you side with Armoroad, you get access to the Shogun class, but the story tends to be a bit dark on their side, and it's implied they're the evil side.

17:32 <Cepheid> If you side with the Deep City, you get access to the Yggdroids, and you're presumably on the side of good.  That said, the king is a bit... rattled in the head.

17:33 <Cepheid> He's the same king that was requested of to sink the city.  He achieved longevity by becoming part Yggdroid.
