00:05 <Schism> Ouch.

00:12 <Cepheid> Astral Chain gives me an intense sense of deja vu.  Especially it's launch trailer.  Brings to mind a dream I had.  Well, I'll know something's up if I see the scene from my dream in the game.

00:21 <Schism> Hmmm.  Crushing Tub.

00:21 * Schism puts some saplings in it, then jumps on it repeatedly. A bucketful of water is his reward.

00:24 <Finwe> Good evening, my perissodactyls of minute stature.

01:27 <Schism> Ah yes.  Jungle saplings will become necessary for bacon trees.

01:28 <ADragonDreaming> why is not rain.

17:56 <Cepheid> Like that, for example.

17:57 <Cepheid> I had trouble when I encountered that enemy for the first time, because the situation was under stress.  Had to protect civvies while killing it, so my focus was keeping it away from the civvies.

17:57 <Cepheid> Now that I got a chance to face it one-on-one in the simulator without distractions.. It has four attacks of note, each telegraphed by the way it lifts it's blade.

18:03 <Cepheid> That said, system's not perfect.

18:04 <Cepheid> They got the spawning of enemies as pre-defined groups.  So for example, if I want to test myself against the Beast C3 enemy by itself, I'm SOL.  The game spawns four C1s alongside it, and they respawn almost instantly after they die.

19:04 * Cepheid sneaks into a nearby bush, starts whistling near Lumindia.

19:04 <Schism> Then there was the effort of the government there to create hard-to-counterfeit promissary notes, but to no avail: you still need to check your checkered Czech cheques.

19:07 <Cepheid> Not part of the joke going on, but last night, there was a report regarding cheques.

19:07 <Cepheid> You know those services and apps that let you take a picture of a cheque to cash it?

19:08 <Schism> Oh dear. Yes, I'm passingly familiar with that.

19:08 <Cepheid> Well, apparently, because of the fact that, unlike banks, they don't stamp the check and take it away, the person cashing the cheque using the picture can keep the cheque itself.  And there doesn't appear to be any sort of centralized database of cashed cheques using the photo system.

19:08 <Cepheid> Long story short, a guy send a cheque to pay for services, and the person receiving it used the photo system to cash it.

19:08 <Cepheid> Four months later, the guy cashed the cheque at an actual bank, a second time.

19:08 <Cepheid> And got paid twice.

19:09 <Schism> You... would think that the bank would handle that central service in their database.  That is, 'cheque has been tendered, do not accept again'.

19:09 <DerpyBot> New post on Equestria Daily by Silver Quill: "She Talks to Angel": Episode Followup  [ http://tinyurl.com/y3qt3vqf ]

19:09 <Lumindia> that seems like it should be an incredibly simple thing to do

19:10 <Cepheid> There's a problem though.

19:11 <Cepheid> First off, multiple banks, different entities.  That would involve co-operating.

19:11 <Cepheid> Secondly, small time companies who trade cheques for cash, who themselves, are unaffiliated with any bank.

19:11 <Cepheid> The problem is that all of these services and banks, they don't work on the same database.  If they even have one at all.

19:11 <Lumindia> how do those work anyway?

19:12 <Cepheid> So you can use a photo at one bank or service, and then cash the cheque directly at another bank or service.

19:12 <Lumindia> I mean the 'company that trades checks for cash'

19:12 <Cepheid> Or indeed, have multiple bank accounts across different banks, and simply cash the cheque using the photo service multiple times, then use one of the individual cheques-for-cash services.

19:12 <Schism> That latter lends itself to a man-in-the-middle attack, yes, if the small-time company doesn't cash things in a timely manner.  But you would think that once the bank receives the note, paying the cheque-cashing service, then that'd be the end of the note.

19:12 <Schism> Especially several MONTHS later.

19:12 <Cepheid> Unfortunately..

19:13 <Cepheid> You can cash the cheque at one bank using the photo service, then cash it in-person at another bank.

19:13 <Cepheid> Unless they communicate or use a centralized server for verifying unique cheque IDs, there's no way for one or the other to know the truth.

19:14 <Schism> See, the first part of the sentence seems a little bit OBVIOUS these days.

19:14 <Cepheid> And since the cheque is not stamped when using the photo services, as far as in-person approach is concerned, the cheque was not cashed in.

19:14 <Cepheid> It seems obvious.

19:14 <ADragonDreaming> This is why Chase's app requires you to write "For electronic deposit at Chase only" on the back.

19:14 <Cepheid> But companies are very, very protective of their interests.

19:14 <Cepheid> They won't co-operate with one another.

19:14 <Cepheid> It's like any other business.

19:14 <Schism> I know, I know, and banking institutions are also very highly prone to inertia.

19:14 <Cepheid> Whoever did this, knew what he was doing, and thought about this.

19:15 <Cepheid> In any case, don't rely on the photo systems.

19:15 <Cepheid> As for Lumindia's question..

19:15 * Schism nodnods. "Be back in a few. Another quick bop down to the store."

19:15 <Colgate> I rely on the photo system when it is from a trusted source, e.g. my employer or family/friend

19:15 <Cepheid> The service basically looks at the cheque, provides a percentage of it's value, usually 90% or so, keeping 10% as a fee for themselves.  They then cash the cheque at a bank.

19:15 <Lumindia> o hai colgate

19:15 * Lumindia hug

19:16 <Cepheid> Colgate:  You're missing the point.  The person receiving it wasn't the one scammed.

19:16 <Cepheid> It was the person sending the cheque.

19:16 <Cepheid> They sent a cheque to pay for services rendered by a contractor.

19:16 <Cepheid> The contractor then cashed the cheque using the photo system, got paid once.

19:16 <Colgate> and that's trivial to catch

19:16 <Cepheid> A few months later, they went to a different bank, and handed the bank the cheque, who then stamped it and took it away, but also gave the person cash for it.

19:16 <Cepheid> Sure.

19:17 <Cepheid> If there's a centralized database.

19:17 <Cepheid> That all the banks utilize.

19:17 <Colgate> no, ever

19:17 <ADragonDreaming> it may be trivial to catch

19:17 <ADragonDreaming> but it was not caught.

19:17 <ADragonDreaming> meaning there's a failure point somewhere.

19:17 <Colgate> the bank that is having the funds withdrawn from gets copies of all the checks

19:17 <Colgate> when they validate the check, they will say "hey, this shit is already cashed" and reverse it

19:18 <Cepheid> Mm, that's right.  The bank being withdrawn from should have had a notice in it's database about the cheque being cashed.

19:18 <Cepheid> So yeah, the bank the sending person was using screwed up.

19:18 <Colgate> it might take a few weeks for them to receive the physical check from the one it was cashed at

19:18 <Colgate> but they have to receive it

19:18 <Colgate> otherwise they will reverse the transaction

19:18 <Cepheid> That cheque should have been in the database of cashed cheques.

19:19 <Cepheid> Yeah, but so far it hasn't been reversed, Colgate.

19:19 <Colgate> the downside of course is that the person who had the check double cashed from will be out the value of the check from their account until it is resolved

19:19 <Cepheid> Mm.

19:19 <Cepheid> Unfortunately, therein lies the problem.  The bank is saying everything is legit.

19:19 <Colgate> but if their bank does not detect this error, they are an absolutely shit bank

19:20 <Colgate> might even be illegal to not have the records to detect this error

19:20 *** Quits: RyuImperator (RyuImperato@Pony-lsal53.dip0.t-ipconnect.de) (Quit: Leaving.)

19:20 <Colgate> since banks have to keep those kinds of records for the gov

19:21 <Cepheid> I wouldn't be shocked if there were gaps in their system.

19:21 <Cepheid> I mean, we saw what happened during the market crash, with banks being bailed out left right and center.

19:21 <Colgate> ??? what does that have to do with banks keeping their books straight?

19:22 <Cepheid> Paranoia, in my case.

19:22 <Colgate> the banks being bailed out had nothing to do with them keeping incorrect records

19:22 <Cepheid> I'm implying that banks can't be trusted to do their jobs right.

19:22 <Cepheid> ..

19:22 <Cepheid> Colgate, I know this.

19:22 <Cepheid> I'm making an implication that banks can't be trusted.

19:22 <Cepheid> Geezus, calm down.

19:22 <Cepheid> In any case..

19:23 <Cepheid> It appears the bank in question has screwed up.  Unfortunately they didn't mention the bank in the report.

19:23 <Cepheid> Just that they pretty much stated that thus far, the transactions were legit.

19:24 <Colgate> reporting to the CFPB might be a good idea too

19:24 <Colgate> if the bank isn't cooperating

19:25 <Cepheid> I don't even know if Canada has an equivalent to them.

19:25 <ADragonDreaming> I certainly don't trust banks to have customer best interests at heart without it being mandated. Too many stories of fee shifting to maximize overdraft fees, etc.

19:25 <Colgate> ah, dunno about canada

19:25 <Cepheid> https://www.canada.ca/en/financial-consumer-agency.html We do.

19:25 <Colgate> CFPB is a pretty fantastic resource for consumers in the US

19:25 <Cepheid> Up until now, I didn't know about it.

19:25 <ADragonDreaming> I know I won't trust Wells Fargo ever.

19:26 <Cepheid> It seems like there's a lot of government agencies and services that we should know about, as citizens, but don't.

19:26 <Cepheid> Either because they aren't advertised, or we're not taught about them, or some other factor.

19:29 <Lumindia> https://i.imgur.com/FtbfAMq.png YO

19:29 <Cepheid> Simple things can set my mood off suddenly, and things can spiral downhill quickly after that.

19:29 <Colgate> but yeah, this should be something easily resolved with a quick investigation, the bank should be able to provide different checks for both transactions

19:29 <Colgate> if they can't do that, something is very wrong

19:29 <Cepheid> Nice, Lumin.

19:29 <Lumindia> I have both already

19:29 <Colgate> and they should be able to provide pictures of both of these checks to the account owner too

19:29 <Cepheid> Yeah.  I suspect the bank's gonna get it's act together rapidly, due to the news report.

19:30 <Cepheid> Usually, when a news report happens about a consumer being screwed, the news station doesn't just report on it.  THey kind of assist the individual with everything that needs to be done to get the company to get it's butt together.

19:30 <Cepheid> So I suspect the canadian CFPB has been contacted by now.

19:30 <Colgate> yeah, probably

20:16 <OctaveSymphony> I also have a Hive Tyrant and whats it called.. the big bent over gun walker bug

20:16 <Ali> Sounds like a Tyrannofex

20:16 <OctaveSymphony> That's it

20:17 <OctaveSymphony> Built it sooo wrong according to a guy who saw it, cause I used the acid spray weapon

20:17 <Ali> Acid Spray is the best gun on it

20:17 <OctaveSymphony> It also looks very cool

20:17 <Ali> Gameplay wise

20:17 <Ali> For close ranged Acid Spray, long range is the uhhh

20:17 <OctaveSymphony> Also been working on a Knight Warden for ages

20:18 <Ali> crap I've forgotten the name of the gun

20:18 <OctaveSymphony> The big long gun?

20:18 <Ali> Yeah S10 3 Shots AP-2?

20:18 <OctaveSymphony> I dunno stats

20:18 <Ali> See the reason OctaveSymphony the Acid spray is prefered

20:18 <OctaveSymphony> Haven't touched a rulebook since the start of 5th edition

20:19 <Ali> Is its 2d6 hits S of the creature, and AP is pretty solid

20:19 <OctaveSymphony> I also has most of the Primarch models >>

20:19 <Ali> Now the gimmick is that if the Tyrannofex doesn't move for a full turn, it can double tap

20:19 <Ali> And nothing wants to take 4d6 worth of hits

20:20 <OctaveSymphony> I kinda want another Tyrannofex though, with those spore arms

20:20 <Ali> Fleshborer Hive?

20:20 <Ali> That is laughably the worst weapon

20:20 <Ali> 20 shot gun that has no AP

20:21 <Ali> Sure you can not move and get 40 S5 shots

20:21 <Ali> But anything with a decent save is gonna shrug it off

20:21 * OctaveSymphony applies another hug to Ali, is not often she encounters people that know 40k

20:22 <Ali> I played Tyranids since 3rd

20:22 <Ali> But only played a few games of the modern edition before I lost anyone that I could play with.

20:22 <Ali> And I don't feel like dealing with it again, so many freaking models to deal with..

20:23 <OctaveSymphony> I'm mad at myself for building a toxicrene though

20:23 <Ali> The gunbug?

20:23 <OctaveSymphony> I don't understand what I was thinking, building that ugly thing

20:23 <OctaveSymphony> Tentacle thing

20:23 <Ali> Pft right that thing

20:23 <Ali> That thing is laughably bad

20:23 <Ali> Heck anything they added to Nids in 7.5 was god awful

20:23 <OctaveSymphony> I bought it along with a zoanthrope brood cause I wanted to make a maleceptor

20:24 <OctaveSymphony> Then suddenly... I have that thing

20:24 <Ali> Malceptors, while they look cool

20:24 <Ali> Are functionally garbage game design wise

20:24 <Ali> Garbage save, terrible psychic power

20:25 <OctaveSymphony> I wish they hadn't butchered the visuals of Obliterators tho

20:25 <OctaveSymphony> New chaos models have been super cool looking and then those things come

20:25 <Ali> At least they get new models

20:25 <Ali> Nids haven't got anything worth a darn since 6th

20:25 <Ali> Was about to say 5th

20:25 <Ali> But half of the codex didn't have a model at that time

20:25 <OctaveSymphony> Heh, well, I am excited for new Sisters of Battle

20:26 <OctaveSymphony> I have ordered the first one they've released

20:26 <Ali> I have a lot of Tyranids

20:26 <Ali> But there's a lot of models that are just unplayable

20:26 <Ali> Lictors for example

20:26 <Ali> Haven't been playable ever

20:26 <OctaveSymphony> I still have my old Tomb Kings army from WHFB

20:26 <Ali> Genestealers finally got good for the first time since 2nd

20:26 <OctaveSymphony> Entire army is obsolete now

20:27 <Ali> Like half of Fantasy's line

20:28 <Ali> I'm glad they gave Carnifexes some new life

20:28 <Ali> But I'm not too thrilled with them having S6 instead of S10

20:28 <OctaveSymphony> I want a Carnifex for my collection

20:28 <OctaveSymphony> But I'm not thrilled that they're sold in packs of two these days

20:28 * Ali slides 10 of them over, 3 are pewter

20:29 <Ali> I actually like that >.>

20:29 <Ali> Fexes are back to being dirt cheap in points

20:29 <Ali> Means you can run a crap ton of them

20:29 <OctaveSymphony> Got the old, Old One Eye?

20:29 <Ali> Eeyup

20:29 <Ali> Same with Red Terror

20:29 <OctaveSymphony> I remember looking at that when I was a kid

20:29 <OctaveSymphony> I wanted it so bad

20:29 <Ali> And smilytyrant and smilyfex

20:30 <Ali> Took me 4 hours to glue is *yay* arms on

20:30 <OctaveSymphony> x3

20:30 <OctaveSymphony> Some metal models were a right pain

20:30 <OctaveSymphony> I had a Dark Elves army...

20:30 <Ali> And now you have to buy a separate glue to work on them

20:31 <Ali> Thus a lot of my pewter models are in pieces now

20:31 <OctaveSymphony> Malekith... the Witch King who would not stay in his saddle

20:31 <ADragonDreaming> My grandfather had the heart of a lion

20:31 <ADragonDreaming> and a lifetime ban from the local zoo

20:31 <OctaveSymphony> Seperate glue?

20:31 <Ali> You need a thicker glue to bond pewter

20:31 <Ali> But most glues now are thin

20:31 <OctaveSymphony> Huh, I've always just used Loctites regular superglue

20:32 <Ali> And they don't work on pewter

20:32 <Ali> I sadly use GW glue

20:32 <Ali> Used to use ZAP, but I've bonded my fingers more than I'd like to admit

20:33 <OctaveSymphony> Always a blast to glue yourself to things

20:33 <OctaveSymphony> Worst I've done is have a tube of some glue and be smart enough to try to clear a block with it aimed at myself

20:33 <Ali> Nids were pretty netorious for finger gluing

20:33 <OctaveSymphony> Glue all the way up to my shoulder

20:33 <OctaveSymphony> Solidified instantly

20:33 <Ali> Stupid fleshborers

20:34 <OctaveSymphony> But, today I got myself worse with another glue

20:34 <OctaveSymphony> I has chemical burns on my left arm

20:34 <Ali> Sounda painful

20:34 <OctaveSymphony> Sulphuric chloride burns skin it seems

20:36 <OctaveSymphony> But, hard to predict that my concrete bonding glue had turned to liquid in the aerosol can

20:37 <OctaveSymphony> It's supposed to become a sticky foam when it comes out, I got pure liquid instead

20:48 * Lumindia pets Ali

20:49 * Ali squeaks

20:54 <Ali> ALL THE LEAKS

21:12 <Cepheid> There.  Best I can do, given what I have.

21:12 <Cepheid> I don't have a Spyder on me, so I can't use that.  And those things are expensive.  Also, this TV isn't exactly known for it's color reproduction, or HDR for that matter.

21:13 <Cepheid> Next TV or monitor I get, I'm putting a metric ton of research into it.  I don't need 120/144/240Hz, especially when you sacrifice colour for it.

21:14 <Cepheid> In other interesting tidbits, there's one thing I never understood with consoles.

21:15 <Cepheid> On PC, resolution matters.  It impacts performance.  Therefore, lower resolutions improve performance.

21:15 <Cepheid> However, I've never seen this to be the case with consoles.

21:16 <Cepheid> Console's designed to run at 1080p, it performs poorly with certain games, that's fine.  But if you force the console to run at 720p, or heavens forbid, 480p, you see absolutely no difference in performance.

21:18 <Cepheid> I can only assume that the console exposes one framebuffer of size N, and the console simply scales it down.

21:27 <Ali> God Dorian slowed down some more

21:27 <Ali> Moving West at 5MPH

21:28 <Schism> Freakin' FINALLY I get the Mistbeard card!

21:34 <Cepheid> Gods, finally.  I think I fixed one of my problems with Astral Chain.

21:34 * Ali flops over Schism and Cepheid

21:35 <Cepheid> There's a lockon ability, but it's very easy to accidentally swap it around by hitting the camera buttons when you're trying to adjust the camera a tad.

21:36 <Cepheid> These options are... there's no description for them, so I have no idea what some of them do.

21:38 <Cepheid> My kingdom for manuals to re-appear once more.

21:41 <Cepheid> "Did you hear about anything weird, and where it happened?"  *Picks Weird Tentacles* "No, that doesn't sound consistent with what I heard, it happened at Ark Mall." ... You just asked me if I heard about anything weird and- ...

22:52 <Cepheid> In a fit of irony though, that last boss?  Would have went better had I had the item that I get from said boss.

23:05 * Schism carefully peels a stick of string cheese, before getting a little bit less patient and simply nomming down. A hellish sound arises from the depths.

23:11 <Schism> At one point, Cepheid, I may have to bribe you to make that an actual game mechanic.

23:21 <Cepheid> What?  Eating a cheese string?  Or peeling it?

23:21 <Schism> Getting tired of the whole thing and just nomming down, causing the trap to spring.

23:22 <Schism> Like this.  https://i.kym-cdn.com/entries/icons/original/000/026/340/Screen_Shot_2018-06-01_at_2.13.46_PM.png
