00:37 <Finwe> Good evening, my perissodactyls of minute stature.

00:37 <Finwe> Mlles Ali|AFK, DashedRainbows, Filly_Nightmares and Jackie; Messrs Lumindia, Cepheid, Schism and Starlight_Glimmer.

00:37 * Finwe doffs his hat.

00:38 * Finwe also doffs his dinner jacket.

00:38 <Finwe> That was an exquisite dinner.

00:39 <Schism> rAdm. Finwe.

00:39 * Schism doffs his new gaming controller.

00:40 * Finwe noms on the aforementioned controller.

00:44 <Schism> I daresay this MicroUSB controller will hold up a bit better than the Logitech, which has issues when someone drags it an inch to the left and the connector detaches internally.

00:44 *** Joins: Pony|49397 (Pony49397@Pony-i454b4.cable.virginm.net)

00:47 <Finwe> USB-C is far superior to micro-USB. o3o

00:48 *** Pony|49397 is now known as ThatAnonPony

00:51 <Finwe> Lt ThatAnonPony.

00:51 <Finwe> o7

00:51 * ThatAnonPony wave.

00:51 <Schism> Finwe: For a controller, this is fine.

00:53 * Finwe noms on a köttpirog.

00:54 <Finwe> Note to self: vegetarian fine dining leaves one hungry.

00:54 * Schism offers the Finwe some tzatziki into which to dip the kottpirog.

00:55 <Finwe> No no no no no no, you cut the köttpirog open and put the extra stuffing inside.

00:56 <Schism> Either way it works.  o3o;

00:56 <Jackie> hi ThatAnonPony

00:57 <Finwe> I already added a sausage, sour gherkin, onion, mustard and ketchup.

00:58 <Schism> Ah, then hold the tsatziki.  o3o

00:58 <ThatAnonPony> Heyo, Jackie.

01:00 <Finwe> https://i.ytimg.com/vi/_M_xJ4mWfJ4/maxresdefault.jpg

01:00 <Finwe> This one is served with ham and boiled egg, but it's not entirely unlike mine.

01:01 * Jackie summons Filly_Nightmares from bucket

01:02 <Finwe> Even the plate is the right colour.

01:02 <Finwe> o3o

01:02 * Filly_Nightmares skrees at Jackie!

01:02 * Filly_Nightmares meows

01:02 * Finwe hats on Filly_Nightmares.

01:02 <DerpyBot> New post on Equestria Daily by Sethisto: Drawfriend Stuff (Pony Art Gallery) #3154 [ http://tinyurl.com/y29v69vt ]

01:03 <Jackie> yay it works

01:03 <Schism> Finwe: Gotta have those pickles in it, for the crunch, I take it.  o3o

01:04 * Jackie pats bucket

01:04 <Finwe> Pickles, or sour gherkin (seasoned with garlic) like I had.

01:04 <Finwe> I think that pickles are more popular, as they are cheaper than sour gherkins.

01:05 * Jackie gives Finwe the bucket

01:05 * Finwe kicks the bucket.

01:06 * Finwe picks up a spoon and throws it into a corner.

01:06 * Finwe kicks at empty space.

01:06 * Finwe files a membership application for the choir invisible.

01:07 <Jackie> you just kicked Filly_Nightmares

01:07 * Finwe pines for fjords.

01:07 <Finwe> Jackie: Wrong channel.

01:09 * Schism screes, and pats the Filly_Nightmares wif a small bug holding a nail for a sword.

01:09 <Jackie> Filly_Nightmares is inside the bucket...

01:10 * Jackie checks her

01:15 *** Quits: RyuImperator (RyuImperato@Pony-stdga7.dip0.t-ipconnect.de) (Quit: Leaving.)

01:40 * DashedRainbows kicks the bucket too but after there's no horse inside

01:46 * Filly_Nightmares noms Schism and then nestles on Jackie

01:49 <LunaNightwind> hey yall

01:50 <DashedRainbows> Hai

01:55 * DashedRainbows sits on Filly_Nightmares

02:02 <DerpyBot> New post on Equestria Daily by Sethisto: 3 Page Preview for My Little Pony Comic:  Feats of Friendship #3  [ http://tinyurl.com/y68vetch ]

02:04 * Filly_Nightmares squishies under DashedRainbows!

02:06 <Schism> So.  I would greatly like to know who in the website design team for my workplace decided that putting a simple captcha up, for purposes of preventing people from ordering boatloads of limited-edition product at a time, was too much effort.

02:08 <Schism> And by 'people' I mean 'scalping bots'.  Like these ones.  https://www.theregister.co.uk/2019/03/01/ticket_scalper_bots/

02:09 *** Quits: Jackie (Jackie@Pony-lcj.0ji.9.61.IP) (Ping timeout: 121 seconds)

02:12 <ADragonDreaming> someone who is paid too much.

02:13 <Schism> Indeed.  At least, for the moment, the week of hell is over.  No new product releases coming out on Saturday or Sunday.  We just got pony fur products, but those are of comparatively limited interest.

02:13 <ADragonDreaming> ...pony what

02:14 <Schism> Yeah, I had to blink at that too.

02:14 <Schism> Okay, okay.  Pony -hair-.

02:14 <ADragonDreaming> made from tail hairs?

02:15 <Schism> I guess?  I'm not sure of the exact compo.  I should look that up.

02:15 <Schism> For added mindscrewery, they're also leopard print.

02:15 <ADragonDreaming> what even is your company

02:16 <Schism> Well, I'm at a call center which supports multiple clients.

02:16 <Schism> The exact client, I shall not mention in a logged chat.

02:17 <ADragonDreaming> Ah.

02:18 <Schism> Hmm... nope, not tail or mane.  Actual pony hair.

02:19 <Schism> Anyway.  With any fortune, this will be the kick in the seat the design team needs to throw some CAPTCHAs on the site or something.

02:26 <Schism> I was mildly amused earlier today.  One person signed in a name which is about as common as "John Smith" is for English.  I checked their credentials, as is norm.  6 pages of accounts popped up, all with the same phone number.

02:26 <ADragonDreaming> Well then.

02:26 <Schism> "Gee," I says to myself, "this can't possibly be fake."

02:27 <Schism> Wanted ever so badly to call them out, but ... nope.

02:44 * DashedRainbows reassembles Filly_Nightmares. Has spares left.

02:45 * Filly_Nightmares floofsplodes at DashedRainbows!

02:46 * ADragonDreaming mutters at Steam

02:46 <ADragonDreaming> New interface appears to be another case of swanky redesign with no actual functionality benefit.

02:47 <ADragonDreaming> and my list of games does not have a scrollbar and is not responding.

02:47 <Schism> Adra: Scrollbar is a smol thing now.

02:47 <Schism> This is not a positive interface change.

02:47 <ADragonDreaming> minimalist scrollbars are a devil.

02:48 <ADragonDreaming> plus...

02:48 <ADragonDreaming> I would like the interface to WORK when I click on it.

02:48 <ADragonDreaming> swank redesigns always seem to add in more resource hoggery which results in INTERFACE LAG.

02:48 <Schism> That would be a positive, yes.

02:53 * DashedRainbows also put the Filly_Nightmares' hooves on backwards

02:54 *** Quits: LunaNightwind (rvd42@Pony-slljp3.nth7.j4eu.0191.2601.IP) (Quit: Leaving)

03:00 * ADragonDreaming puts in a support ticket for unresponsive client.

03:00 * ADragonDreaming adds in feedback regarding scrollbar in said ticket

03:00 <Schism> Ghost Call / Ghost Chat.

03:02 * Filly_Nightmares meows at DashedRainbows and climbs onto ja

03:02 * Filly_Nightmares climbs onto Schism

03:04 <Schism> Er, hah.  Unresponsive client.  I'm in a weird state.

03:09 <ADragonDreaming> well, I mean, I'm at work as well

03:09 <ADragonDreaming> but we just call those "hang-up tickets"

03:10 <Schism> Ah, we call that ghosting.

03:10 <ADragonDreaming> it applies also to cases where all you can here is *static*

03:10 <ADragonDreaming> *hear

03:10 <Schism> Customer calls in, immediately hangs up, doesn't respond.  That's a ghost.  o3o

03:11 <Schism> That's what we get.  They recently adjusted the backend so that anything flagged as a ghost doesn't require any extra hoops, you just click ghost and the case isdone.

03:11 <Schism> Yay for shorter AHT.

03:11 <ADragonDreaming> huzzah

03:12 <ADragonDreaming> we do not have anything so fancy

03:12 <Schism> 'Tain't fancy, it just autofills the case as 'ghost chat' and fills in nothing else, and the team know to leave it be.

03:12 <ADragonDreaming> our inbounds aren't tied to the ticketing system, so everything has to be input.

03:12 <ADragonDreaming> we do have a hangup ticket template, though.

03:13 <ADragonDreaming> plus a hangup category.

03:13 <Schism> Eugh.  Well, that's something at least.  I didn't have anything like that back at my old tech support job, either.

03:13 <Schism> Oh yeah.

03:14 <Schism> We need a specific case ID for 'hung up during verification, make sure they're not fishing'.

03:14 <ADragonDreaming> it works. part of it is that the ticketing system is the same as was in use in 2009, which, sure, it's had updates to it, but I think this system just doesn't have the integration possibilities that ServiceNow has.

03:15 <ADragonDreaming> and we use the ticketing system that the Client uses, so...

03:16 <Schism> Ours was... hum.  Started back in 1999.  It's been adapting pretty well, probably because it's actually a cloud-based design rather than an app inside a Citrix bubble.

03:17 <Schism> Again, this is the system the Client uses.

03:17 <ADragonDreaming> aye

03:17 <ADragonDreaming> anyway

03:17 <ADragonDreaming> gonna spend the rest of my hopefully call-less night playing Baldur's Gate

03:17 <Schism> Have fun!  I should probably play that and Icewind Dale sometime.

03:18 <Schism> If I can get them to run in a windowed mode that doesn't slow them to 1FPS.

03:18 <Schism> (Hi there, DK2.  I hate your coding.)

03:19 <Schism> ... then again, despite the miracles they performed, I'm pretty sure I despise all of Bullfrog's coding.

03:21 <Schism> Adra!  Adra Adra Adra!

03:21 <ADragonDreaming> ...what was I doing again...?

03:21 <ADragonDreaming> yes?

03:21 <Schism> Wait, you eschew Epic Games.  Was gonna say, Nuclear Throne is free there right now.

03:21 <ADragonDreaming> What is Nuclear Throne?

03:22 <ADragonDreaming> but also, yes, I despise exclusivity.

03:22 <Schism> Top down shooty little roguelite, almost but not entirely unlike Gungeon.

03:22 <ADragonDreaming> what is Gungeon?

03:23 <Schism> Enter the Gungeon is a top down shooty little roguelite, almost but not entirely unlike Nuclear Throne.

03:23 <ADragonDreaming> I'm not super into roguelikes anyway

03:23 <ADragonDreaming> (from everything I've seen the Epic Store is a hacked together mess)

03:23 <Schism> Okay, more details.  The top-down roguelite is usually a sort of game where you go through and proceed with various upgrades unlocked by your performance, a lot like the Binding of Isaac.

03:23 <ADragonDreaming> (all else aside I'm not sure I can trust them with my stuff0

03:24 <ADragonDreaming> Schism: yeah, not usually my speed of game.

03:24 <Schism> Adra: Yeah, same here.  So if my account gets compromised, that's okay, because it's entirely filled with games I've gotten for free.

03:25 *** Joins: Dranae (Scootaloo@I.Will.Fly.Higher)

03:25 <ADragonDreaming> I'll start using Epic when they have an actual client and stop with the exclusivity nonsense.

03:25 <Schism> An actual client... it's gotten a little better.  I say a little because it's simply still nonsense on that front.

03:25 * DashedRainbows ponies a bit

03:25 <Schism> Also, they may be under the impression that this will lead me to actually drop so much as a dime on their storefront, but that's okay.

03:26 <ADragonDreaming> are there user reviews yet?

03:26 <Schism> Why, no!  And you still can't create a cart.

03:26 <ADragonDreaming> or a shopping cart?

03:26 <ADragonDreaming> then it's not a client.

03:26 <Schism> It's a launcher, I know.

03:27 <Schism> Still, Nuclear Throne, I figured, might be your cup of tea.  Sorry for the mistake.

03:27 <Schism> (Oxenfree was great, but you get that sometimes.)

03:29 <Schism> I just realized that it's 11 PM, I'm wired, and I need to start prepping for work at 6 AM if I want to get out in time at all.

03:29 <Schism> 10:30 AM.  Still.

18:23 <Cepheid> Morning.

18:24 * Ali wavies to the Cepheid

18:24 <Cepheid> How goes it?

18:26 <Ali> Eh, last night was a bit of a personal struggle for me

18:27 <Cepheid> Same with me yesterday.

18:27 <Cepheid> I've decided the best solution at this point is to drop out of university.  The environment is just being too hard on me physically and mentally.

18:27 <Cepheid> It isn't worth the damage I'm going through.

18:27 <Ali> Maybe take online courses instead?

18:28 <Cepheid> Actually, I'm going to work on my portfolio, work on small tools, programs that show my skill in problem solving, etc.

18:28 <Cepheid> And self-study what I want to learn.

18:28 <Cepheid> In this case, self-study Japanese.  I know what books I need.  I asked the profs for the information.  ANd on the programming side, I'm gonna study gamedev on my own terms.  I learn better this way.

18:28 <Ali> That seems like a better plan, at least you won't have to deal with the irritations of stupid university people

18:28 <Ali> Not forced into stupid group projects that nobody wants to work on

18:29 <Cepheid> That's still something I'm gonna have to deal with until December.

18:29 <Ali> Trying to study in places and nobody will ST*yay*U

18:29 <Cepheid> I'm not gonna leave my colleagues high and dry.

18:29 * Ali nod nods

18:29 <Cepheid> But I won't be concerning myself with class assignments, exams, or lectures though.

18:29 <Cepheid> So it shouldn't be as hard on me, and I can focus on the group project exclusively.

18:29 <Ali> Also looks like Factorio is gonna fix the OMG NIGHT IS PITCH BLACK AHHHHH

18:30 * Filly_Nightmares eee!

18:30 <Cepheid> Not so sure about that.  Yeah, they're changing the brightness and colours, but..

18:30 <Cepheid> It'll result in a brighter day, and brighter stuff in light at night, but may affect anything not lit up.

18:30 <Ali> Well even a small gradiant change is better than pitch black night

18:31 <Ali> There was something that did somewhere in .17 that just made night so much darker than .16

18:31 <Cepheid> I didn't really notice it myself, but then..

18:32 * Cepheid looks around. He has blackout curtains on his windows. Bedroom door is mostly closed, keeping hallway light out of his room.

18:32 <Cepheid> I thrive and exist in darkness.

18:32 <Ali> I don't mind IRL darkness

18:33 <Cepheid> You misunderstand.

18:33 * Ali headtilts

18:33 <Cepheid> My eyes are adapted for seeing dark colours.  I can see under that curtain of night mostly fine even without the game's night vision goggles.

18:34 * Ali ahs

18:35 <Cepheid> I cannot stand bright colours.  Burns my eyes and makes them sting.  I suspect I have a light sensitivity of some sort, especially with light outdoors.  Next time I see my ophthalmologist, I plan to ask if there's ways to test for light sensitivity to certain types of light.

18:35 <Cepheid> Especially UV light, which I think is the problem.

18:35 <Cepheid> Cause right now...

18:36 * Cepheid looks up at the lights in his bedroom. He doesn't squint or have any problems looking directly at the light bulbs, or around them.

18:36 * Cepheid pokes his head outdoors, it's cloudy outside, but it's "too bright" for him. He has to squint and/or close one eye to see clearly and focus his eyes.

18:36 <Cepheid> This doesn't make sense.

18:38 <Cepheid> Only difference between the two is that the lights above me are LEDs, and give off no UV light.  Outside, there's UV light.

18:39 <Ali> Eeyup

18:39 <Cepheid> Anyhow, so yeah.  I'll be around more often.  I'm going to be setting aside at least 6 hours of work each day on the weekdays, with a one-hour break in the middle.  I'll try to get this done early in the morning so I can play games like Factorio later in the evening. :P

18:40 <Cepheid> But right now, I'm on a horror binge, so Factorio's on the sideburner for a bit.

18:40 <Cepheid> 'Sides, ADra's also busy too, so..

18:40 <Ali> That's fine

18:40 <Cepheid> By the way...

18:41 <Cepheid> DashedRainbows, Finwe, I apologize for my behaviour yesterday morning, and my rude and impolite outburst.  I am not well, right now.  I am working to restore my sanity, though.

18:41 <Cepheid> Also, sorry for breaking rules, Ali.

18:41 <Cepheid> ...

18:42 <Cepheid> Hey Ali, what's the mod we use on the factorio server?  My memory is faulty at the moment, and for some danged reason I can't-  Oh, Industrial Revolution.  Nevermind.

18:42 <Ali> yeah IR

18:42 <Ali> While its an interesting mod

18:42 <Ali> It slows everything down to a danged crawl

18:42 <Cepheid> My memory is problematic, and has been contributing to my negative mood as of late.  I asked my counselor about it.

18:42 <Cepheid> Yeah, I was wondering..

18:42 <Cepheid> Would you and ADragonDreaming be game for a Krastorio server alongside the IR server?

18:43 <Cepheid> Or a standard server with some changes to make things a bit more interesting in having to expand?

18:43 <Ali> Not heard of this mod, what does it do?

18:43 <Ali> The main thing with vanilla

18:43 <Cepheid> Another mod that adds a bunch of stuff to extend things a bit.

18:43 <Ali> Is that there's no post game stuff

18:43 <Ali> You launch a rocket and you feel a bit out of it

18:43 <Cepheid> https://mods.factorio.com/mod/Krastorio

18:44 <Ali> Well, unless you have the guts to have X luanches thing

18:44 <Cepheid> It has a potato mode, so even your system shouldn't **** out that hard.  But yeah.

18:44 <Ali> potato mode heh

18:44 <Cepheid> The lack of post-game is no fun.  Someone needs to come up with a mod for the bugs that creates goals with them.

18:45 <Cepheid> It's hard to do post-game, though.  If there isn't post-game, then the problem becomes "You need a reason to get to the rocket.  And get to it ASAP."

18:46 <Cepheid> Like, after a certain point with military, the bugs aren't a threat anymore.

18:46 <Cepheid> So they don't encourage you to work towards the rocket as much.

18:47 <Ali> Yeah I know

18:47 <Cepheid> Unfortunately, simply adding more tiered bugs is problematic in it's own right.

18:47 <Ali> Or there's nothing locked behind white science

18:47 <Cepheid> It can be done, but it usually comes at a cost.

18:47 <Ali> Other than infinite stuff

18:47 <Cepheid> And not like, difficulty or anything like that.

18:47 <Ali> The one thing I might miss is the mega storage things of IR

18:47 <Cepheid> The cost is in terms of system resources.  It's a known problem with stuff like Bob's Enemies, Rampant, and the like.

18:48 <Ali> But other than that, the ages can go *yay* off

18:48 <Cepheid> I can create mega storage containers, myself.  There are also mods that add just storage containers, and only storage containers.

18:48 <Ali> The other thing Factorio needs is more power sorces

18:48 <Cepheid> Mmhmm.

18:48 <Ali> Its the same drawback with Rimworld

18:48 <Ali> You have limited power sources, and they all have suck mechanics

18:49 <Cepheid> Or at the least, balance them out.  Such that nuclear is harder to use, and has some risk to it, while providing it's greater power.

18:49 <Ali> Steam is just omega stink

18:49 <Cepheid> Currently, the only risk is if the temperature is above 900C, and a reactor is destroyed, it'll explode similarly to a nuclear bomb.

18:49 <Ali> Solar is OMG LARGE FOOTPRINT

18:50 <Ali> Yeah but the odds of letting a bug get close to a reactor is slim

18:50 <Ali> But still

18:50 <Ali> I wish steam and solar had a tier system

18:50 <Cepheid> Even so, the explosion radius isn't enough to make it risky.

18:50 <Cepheid> Steam, solar, and power storage.

18:50 <Ali> Where you can research new versions of them for more power and less drawback

18:50 <Cepheid> Power storage especially, for fluids.

18:51 <Ali> Heck even teirs of accumulators would be nice too

18:51 <Cepheid> Right now, fluid tanks with 500+C steam is more dense than an accumulator by far.

18:51 <Cepheid> Hell, even standard steam in a fluid tank is still more dense than an accumulator.

18:51 <Ali> Cause they just can't store or output enough depending on things

18:51 <Cepheid> The only problem with all of these things is, if we want to balance them through mods, that means CPU resources.

18:51 <Ali> And again with accums, they start to leave a massive footprint

18:52 <Ali> As always

18:52 <Ali> But then again you could go the old NES route

18:52 <Ali> Just recolor the same itiem as it tiers up

18:52 <Cepheid> Unfortunately, the devs have failed to implement all of that in an easy manner.

18:52 <Cepheid> And in a not-resource-intensive manner.

18:53 <Cepheid> It calls back to the tiered bugs problem.

18:53 <Ali> Of course

18:53 <Ali> Its the one amazing thing to think of about the NES stuff

18:53 <Ali> How they managed to cram all that stuff into kilobytes of data

18:53 <Cepheid> See, any time you define a new entity, that's one more set of graphics stored in VRAM.  As I understand it, the game *DOES NOT*, with exception to players, vehicles, and certain structures, support using what you're suggesting.

18:54 <Ali> I wouldn't be surprised

18:54 <Cepheid> The reason the NES stuff worked is because they didn't store color data in the sprites and graphics.

18:54 <Ali> In this day and age most systems wouldn't need to be run like that

18:54 <Cepheid> They stored indices into a list of colors.

18:54 <Dranae> Wait

18:54 <Dranae> WAIT

18:54 <Cepheid> A palette.  You have say, 4 colors in a palette.  You only need 2 bits per pixel then.

18:54 <Dranae> THAT'S why color swaps were a thing?

18:54 <Cepheid> Yes.

18:55 <Cepheid> The NES, SNES and other early generation consoles use palettes.

18:55 <Cepheid> They use indexed color, instead of true 32-bit color.

18:55 <Dranae> Huh.

18:55 <Cepheid> Where you specify each pixel as an RGB/RGBA triplet.

18:55 <Ali> Yeah the NES was famous for that when looking back at it

18:55 <Ali> You ever wondered why the coulds and bushes in SMB were the same?

18:56 <Cepheid> Instead, they loaded a palette into hardware, which is just a list of N colors, usually ranging from 4 to 16 or more.  And then, as for the sprites?

18:56 <Cepheid> Instead of storing 3 or 4 bytes per pixel, you used one byte, or even less than one byte, per pixel.

18:56 <Cepheid> That byte being which color in the loaded palette to use.

18:56 <Ali> Its quite amazing what they managed to do on NES carts

18:56 <Cepheid> Which is why, when you swapped that palette out, the graphics would automatically change.

18:57 <Cepheid> Or, if you changed the palette directly, you can do color-based animation.

18:57 <Cepheid> You can technically still do it today.

18:58 <Cepheid> In modern tech, it's called masking.  You create a monochromatic image, using values ranging from 0 to 255 to represent brightness, let's call these texels, texture elements, because you know, all 2D and 3D graphics call images textures in shaders and such.

18:59 <Cepheid> When you go to draw the image, you retrieve the texel for a given pixel that you're working on, take a color, and combine the two to create a pixel that has the proper brightness and color, and draw it to the screen.

19:00 <Cepheid> I might be wrong about the technique name, though.  I am... not known for using the proper terminology and lingo for everything.

19:00 <Ali> Its fine

19:00 <Cepheid> I know what it is I'm doing, but I only understand it in terms that I personally use.

19:00 <Ali> I'm not the best speller and I tend to muck up things

19:00 <Cepheid> It showed in my gamedev exam.  I screwed up a lot of questions because I used my own terms for things, rather than the "taught" terminology.

19:01 <Cepheid> But yeah, under the hood, on the NES, SNES, Genesis and all that?  Every single graphic, every single sprite?  They're just a bunch of monochromatic images.

19:02 <Cepheid> You draw them out exactly as they are without using palettes or anything, they would just appear as grayscale/monochromatic images.

19:02 <Dranae> Wow.

19:02 <Ali> But again the best example of this is in Super Mario Bros

19:02 <DerpyBot> New post on Equestria Daily by FlareGun45: Editorial: Story opportunities for Scorpan [ http://tinyurl.com/yyyk3wl7 ]

19:03 <Ali> The coulds and the bushes are the same sprite

19:03 <Cepheid> Yep.

19:03 <Ali> Koopas are the same way

19:03 <Ali> Just greens are programmed to behave differently than the reds

19:03 <Ali> But its all the same sprite

19:04 <Ali> But you know what's wierd to me

19:04 <Ali> Is that playing SMB now vs back in 89

19:05 <Ali> Is that the game feels a ton shorter

19:05 <Cepheid> Emulators of cartridge-era games before the N64 often allow you to open windows and views that show stuff like the current palettes in use, or even examine the data in a visual manner.  If you know where to find the graphics data, you can see all the sprites as they are in memory, etc.

19:05 *** Parts: DashedRainbows (dashedrhg1@Winged.Horsey.Dog.Thing) ("User left")

19:07 <Ali> Cepheid, did arcade Pac Man also use the sprite trick for the ghosts to save data?  Though not sure if they needed to or not

19:07 <Cepheid> Now that I've been discussing this, I'm curious if it's possible to apply masking to things other than players and certain constructs in Factorio.

19:07 <Cepheid> Most likely, Ali.

19:07 <Ali> I mean you can use the one ghost sprite and then have it do all six versions of the ghost

19:07 <Cepheid> Yep.

19:08 <Ali> And all that was just done cause of the storage space

19:08 <Ali> Now its not as much of an issue

19:08 <Cepheid> Actually, that's not 100% true.

19:08 <Ali> but its amazing to think one little sprite can be used 10 different ways just to save memory

19:09 <Cepheid> Video memory is still a premium even in modern games.

19:10 <Cepheid> Even my video card, with it's 6GB, is having problems with modern games.

19:10 <Ali> I know, but video memory wasn't as much of a problem for the NES, well I lie a bit, they had good old sprite flicker

19:10 <Cepheid> The sprite flicker was a memory issue, yeah.

19:10 <Cepheid> Hardware was designed to render only so many sprite tiles per "line", and if you exceeded that limit, then you saw flickering.

19:11 <Ali> Which is why the enemy layout in games were kinda sparce at times

19:11 <Cepheid> Mmhmm.

19:11 <Ali> I know Megaman games pushed the sprite limit several times

19:11 <Cepheid> Improvements were performed by utilizing on-cartridge special chips.

19:11 <Ali> Like in Metalman's stage and the Mecha Dragon

19:12 <Cepheid> These chips were usually either extra or improved processors, or chips called mappers.

19:12 <Ali> Cause its funny, the dragon fires a rapid fire fireball attack that causes sprite flicker

19:12 <Ali> which also means that 95% of them don't deal any damage

19:12 <Ali> You could use sprite flicker to cheat things and go thru some flickering things without contact damage

19:13 <Ali> Did you ever play Megaman 2 Cepheid?

19:13 <Cepheid> That... actually doesn't make sense, from a programming perspective.  And yes, I did.

19:13 <Ali> You know those crushers in metal man's stage

19:13 <Cepheid> My guess is, the devs coded the entity handling to not process entities that were invisible from the flickering, to avoid cheap shots and such.

19:13 <Ali> You can get to a point in the stage where it'll start flickering the chains

19:13 <Cepheid> Because otherwise, the flickering should not affect the underlying game logic.  Only the visual aspect.

19:13 <Ali> and you can just jump thru the chain and not take damage

19:14 <Cepheid> Interesting.

19:14 <Ali> But it has to be in a flickering state

19:14 <Ali> If its solid, you will still take contact damage

19:15 <Cepheid> So yeah, they did some fun logic coding to prevent cheap shots, then.

19:15 <Cepheid> Because flickering should not affect the underlying logic.

19:15 <Ali> I'm not sure, I'm not into code like you

19:15 <Ali> But flicker sometimes does odd things

19:15 <Cepheid> But, then again, I never coded for the NES, so..

19:15 <Cepheid> I can certainly implement an NES-like aesthetic.  I've done it before.

19:16 <Ali> I love NES games, they're more enjoyable than most modern games even now

19:16 <Ali> Just so many of them are lost to time cause its hard to even get ahold of some of the carts.

19:16 <Cepheid> Yep.

19:16 <Cepheid> And even then, there's also bitrot.

19:16 <Ali> And I can't trust emulator sites

19:16 <Cepheid> Mmhmm.

19:16 <Ali> Ever since the best one shut down

19:17 <Ali> Cause they're either a broken mess of the code, don't work, or probably virus laiden

19:17 <Cepheid> There should, at this point, be a statute of limitations regarding software and whether it's legal to download it without paying for it or not.  We're entering an era of... problems, because of it.

19:17 <Cepheid> Video games of the past, are, at this point, historical relics.

19:18 <Cepheid> We should be maintaining an accessible library for the sake of making sure that these things don't disappear.

19:18 <Cepheid> But companies(Not just Nintendo), are preventing us from preserving these old pieces of software.

19:18 <Cepheid> And as bitrot claims more and more of it, it's history we lose.

19:18 <Ali> Well Nintendo has more to lose than all the other companies

19:19 <Ali> Since well, most of their games are in that historical relic state

19:19 <Cepheid> If, and when I ever finish development of a game, after sales have slowed considerably, and I consider it "done", I plan to just release it for the public to obtain for free.

19:20 <Cepheid> As open-source, no less.  So that it can be maintained and preserved.

19:20 * Ali nods

19:20 <Cepheid> As for Nintendo having more to lose than any other, I disagree.

19:20 <Cepheid> Atari has a lot more to lose.

19:20 <Cepheid> As well as companies that made games *BEFORE* Atari.

19:21 <Cepheid> Even the original Pong itself, should be maintained in a library somewhere, but it probably isn't because of copyright issues.

19:23 <Cepheid> Also, bitrot, for description, is wherein the media storing data, be it for a database, or a piece of software, and so on, has a momentary glitch in which a literal, single bit, is flipped through some manner of... interference, for lack of a better word.

19:23 <Ali> So what is bitrot?

19:24 <Cepheid> Perhaps it's magnetic media that got hit by a stray magnetic field, not enough to wipe all the data, but enough to flip a bit here or there.  Or a cosmic ray, or hells alive, an atomic element, flying through a drive and flipping a bit on the magnetic media, or even in solid-state media.

19:24 <Cepheid> Bitrot is the literal degredation of data over time.

19:25 <Cepheid> Individual bits being flipped here and there, changing the data at the lowest possible level of data storage.

19:25 <Cepheid> In a program, a single bit flip could cause an instruction that adds two numbers, to suddenly multiply two numbers.

19:26 <Cepheid> And as the density of storage media gets higher and higher, the likelihood of this happening increases.

19:27 <Cepheid> The only way to resolve it is to keep multiple copies of the data, and do regular comparisons, and fix the relevant data according to some standard.  Or through various implementations of error correction that can detect such problems.

19:27 <Cepheid> Essentially, over time, programs, data, you name it, will degrade, and exhibit bugs, crashes, invalid data, etc.

19:28 <Cepheid> And eventually, if it gets too bad, it'll be lost to time.

19:29 <Cepheid> It's like books falling apart over time, even though no one ever opens them, reads them, manipulates them.  Environmental factors cause the paper to fall apart, the glue in book bindings to become brittle and useless, and so on.  Nothing lasts forever.

19:30 <Cepheid> The only way to make sure it lasts forever, is to continually renew it in some manner.  In the case of data and programs, make sure you make regular copies and ensure the copies are exactly the same as some sort of baseline known-good copy.  In the case of books, you either photocopy them, or manually copy them to new, fresh materials.

19:31 <Ali> Ohh Bit rot

19:31 * Ali flops over

19:31 <Cepheid> And even if bitrot isn't a concern, there's also physical degradation of chips and electronics.

19:32 <Cepheid> Everything, and I mean *EVERYTHING* that we manufacture, has various ideal environmental attributes that contribute to longevity.

19:32 <Cepheid> If you exceed these attributes, well, they're gonna slowly break down, erode, rot away.

19:33 <Cepheid> 's why some computer components in one environment will last decades, while in another environment, they might only last a few years.

19:33 <Cepheid> In the case of electronics, usually the dominating factors are humidity and temperature.

19:36 <Cepheid> Man, I seriously need to find a better IRC client that doesn't rely on an ancient version of GTK.

20:12 <Cepheid> In a dark-as-hell room, hear footsteps approaching, I can't see *ANYTHING* even with the flashlight on, then to my right?  The footsteps stop, followed by something moaning "Leslie..."

20:12 <DashedRainbows> and you said unicorns weren't good giddy up horsies. sniffles though

21:18 * DashedRainbows boops Starlight_Glimmer with her GlimGlam doll

21:24 <Cepheid> Annoyingly, because of the way saving works in this game, I've already botched my chance to get full understanding of what's going on.  Even though I picked up the first letter piece, because I died and forgot to pick it up again, I am now missing the first piece.  I'll not be able to finish the letter.

21:25 <Cepheid> Guess once I get the last piece, I'll just look it up on a wiki somewhere.

21:27 <Cepheid> Of course.  I know that something's gonna come out at me from somewhere, and I go to hide before it pops out.  Where does it pop out?  Exactly where I'm hiding.

21:54 *** Joins: RyuImperator (RyuImperato@Pony-stdga7.dip0.t-ipconnect.de)

21:57 <Cepheid> There's an interesting "scare" at the second save point of the first DLC.

21:58 <Cepheid> For some reason, they never repeat anything like it at a later save point.

21:59 <Cepheid> Basically, if you sit at the save point after saving, you'll see an enemy walk behind, then turn to face where your character would be.  But if you get up, the enemy just... disappears.

22:05 <PinkieShy> oh neat..

22:05 <PinkieShy> Freeze Warning in affect..

22:08 <DashedRainbows> huh

22:21 <Cepheid> Hmm.  Trap in the floor, locked door, room where I can hide in a locker.  And a key item.
