06:01 <Cepheid> Meanwhile, I assume my desire to rage, yell and vent against my own reflection may be another one of those manifestations of dysphoria. Especially since I'm pretty sure its not against myself directly, but something unidentifiable.
06:01 * Schism nods firmly.
06:04 <Cepheid> I also know its not against that voice within of mine. Because when I envision myself raging, I regularly see a visual effect akin to a solar flare or a solar prominence blazing from my body. Represents her rage and hatred. She has the same emotions and feelings about whatever it is I want to vent against.
06:04 <Cepheid> Burn it. Reduce it to cinders. Burn the ashes. Scatter the atoms across the void.

06:06 * Schism also frowns at herself. "Names are difficult. I'm thinking Jennifer. I don't know, though."
06:07 <Cepheid> I'm starting to think what she is, is actually an anthropomorphization of my own rage, hatred, anger, and... Interestingly enough, my self-control. Combined with personal religious beliefs.
06:07 <Cepheid> By acknowledging her existence, I feel in more control of my own emotions.
06:08 <Cepheid> A coping mechanism of sorts. Not necessarily a bad one.
06:08 * Schism nods. "Do I contradict myself? Very well, then, I contradict myself. I am large, I contain multitudes." --Walt Whitman

06:10 <Schism> Heh, more like acknowledging those parts of yourself is hardly a bad thing. We are all made of stars, after all. Plural.

06:15 <Cepheid> Mmhmm. Takes many forms, usually through machines. Puppets, of sorts, if you will. Some of them that she has shown me are... *shakes head.* I'm sure you've seen some of the monstrosities that come out of Spore.
06:15 <Schism> So many teeth.
06:15 <ConfusionRift> "Hi! Lea! Why?!"
06:16 <Cepheid> Teeth. Limbs. Tentacles. Indescribable things.
06:17 <Cepheid> I am insane.
06:17 <Schism> Well, you're at least in good company.
06:18 <Schism> I don't just have one character dictating my mood there. I have a council.
06:18 <Cepheid> My insanity keeps me in a semblance of normality, though.
06:19 <Schism> "Hey, Fire. Come on out." "BURN THE WORLD." "No, no. We're not going to burn the whole thing. Just lance an infection." "Still burn?" "Yes. Still burn."
06:20 <Cepheid> Oh, technically there are others. Just, you know. I only see her world through her eyes. Which right now is confined to a small container, with numerous cracks. What she tells me of others is where some of my personal beliefs of existence come from.
06:21 <Schism> Freudian theory is bull[yay], but sometimes, in cases like yours, it can be helpful as an explanation.
06:24 <Cepheid> So far, general appearance of things is that stars are simply the physical manifestations of various long-lived entities. Most usually just keep quiet. Others take roles in existence. In relation to a recent topic that you became infatuated with, one of them has actually proclaimed themselves to be a deity of cake.
06:25 <Schism> As Vexxarr might ask, what KIND of cake?
06:25 <Cepheid> Or, at least, something akin to it anyways. The cultural concept of what cake is to us.
06:25 <Schism> Oh, so the metacake.
06:26 <Cepheid> Mmhmm. Basically, anything that a culture would treat similarly to how we treat cake.
06:26 <Cepheid> That is, one of the most desirable foods in existence.
06:27 <Cepheid> ... It wouldn't surprise me if one of their adherents was responsible for that damned meme, now that I think about it.
06:28 <Schism> We are all made of cake. </The Morninglight>
06:28 <Cepheid> "You want to treat everything like cake? Why?" "My god told me to."

06:29 <ConfusionRift> It is, and got out of control.
06:29 <Schism> Ali: Well, newish. Have you seen those videos of everything being cake?
06:29 <Cepheid> Unfortunately, no way to confirm. Can't speak with anyone outside of this body regarding it to investigate.
06:29 <Ali> No, I don't try to follow memes
06:30 <Schism> Cepheid: Just provide them with some red velvet, they'll be happy.
06:30 <Cepheid> Can see certain individuals in the night sky, but they are a tad too far away to hear our voices.
06:30 <Ali> I just don't understand memes and the like. They're kinda stupid.

06:31 <Schism> Admittedly, if I were about to bite into a rib roast and it turned out to be cake, I'd be upset.
06:32 <Schism> Ali: It's all about cakes disguised as photorealistic objects. That's all.
06:32 <Cepheid> And even if they could speak with me one-way, I suspect they either don't know I'm here, or a malicious intelligence is blocking them. Whole containment vessel and all that.
06:33 <Cepheid> That said, the vessel does seem to be looking more and more worse for wear these days.
06:33 <Schism> Understanding why it's doing so, and how, is key to dealing therewith.
06:33 <Cepheid> Besides the one large crevice-like crack, there are small cracks appearing across it.
06:35 <Cepheid> ... I wonder if this is actually my eggshell, created by my brain.
06:36 <Schism> I wouldn't pigeonhole her. Most of our mental constructs do double- or triple-duty.
06:36 <Schism> They wear a lot of hats.
06:36 <Cepheid> That said, I am curious as to why my brain creates and/or believes all this stuff, or why I feel more normal and relaxed in doing so, despite knowing how the average person would perceive all of it.
06:37 * Schism pauses. Then rolls up, and shakes Cepheid. "Because we're WEIRD!"
06:37 <Schism> We're incomprehensibly weird people! This is not going to change!
06:38 <Cepheid> Well, I mean, so long as nothing is telling me to "Kill them all".
06:38 <Schism> But then you look at Sniff, and you look at Filly_Nightmares, and eventually you realize that weird is pretty normal. :P
06:38 <Schism> Are you kidding? I get that same voice. :P
06:39 <Cepheid> Nothing actually tells me to "kill therm all"
06:39 * Filly_Nightmares eee and curls up on Schism face
06:39 * Filly_Nightmares floofs up and skree!
06:39 * Schism patpats the floof, and puts her on Cepheid's head!
06:40 <Cepheid> Most of the time it's "Calm down" and "Let me take care of this" and "Yes, rage! Feel the rage! Make that enemy suffer! Mwahahaha! Kill those damned bugs!"
06:40 <Ali> BLOOD FOR THE BLOOD GOD
06:41 <Schism> "I fire one bullet at them." "Okay, they dodge...?" "That is not suppressive fire." "Wait for it." *bom* "That is suppression."
06:42 <Cepheid> Then there are times when something literally takes over my head, flattens my emotions and thinking, and then kind of just blaze (metaphorically) through something.
06:42 <Schism> It's hard not to want to burn down everything sometimes. Especially these days.
06:44 <Cepheid> It feels like something is taking my emotions, which are concentrated somewhere, and spreading the sensation over my entire body. Like whatever it is, is diluting the emotions, putting them in their place. Making them feel inconsequential. This tends to happen mostly with negative emotions.
06:47 <Cepheid> Like, for example, I'm in a game, having trouble with something, maybe a boss. Frustration builds from repeated failure. I reach some undefined breaking point. Then the sensation just washes over me. Frustration is gone. Minor twitching stops. Things feel like they slow down. My brain and eyes become more responsive to slight changes.
06:47 <Cepheid> Then the next thing I know, whatever was in my way is dead. Horribly so.
06:48 <Cepheid> You remember that time we first did the World of Darkness in FF14?
06:49 <Cepheid> Happened twice there. Once against that chained dog. The other time, the Cloud of Darkness.
06:49 <Cepheid> See also, end of Coil 1.
06:49 <Schism> Yeeesh. o.o
06:50 <Schism> Berserkism.
06:50 <Cepheid> It is the weirdest damned sensation. Like, I'm in control, but anything that might interfere just... It all goes silent.
06:51 <Cepheid> It happens with more than just games too. Exams. Assignments. Projects.
06:52 <Cepheid> It's like something snaps within me and goes "Yeah, okay, I'm not dealing with this anymore." and just silences everything.
06:53 <Cepheid> Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to work against everything. My depression for example.
06:53 <Cepheid> Wonder if it would manifest against Omega.

09:16 <Schism> Yerp...
09:16 <ConfusionRift> So... whatever it is, it's supposedly server side... but it isn't server side, since everyone else is still playing it.
09:16 <Schism> Maybe it's an issue with PhysX.
09:17 <Cepheid> Sounds more like it uses something that doesn't exist on Rifty's machine somehow.
09:18 <ConfusionRift> How is it possible for me to run Terminal Velocity with no issues, and this one game is giving me the stink eye?
09:19 <Cepheid> Because Terminal Velocity doesn't require any weird CPU extensions or special functionality of more recent CPUs designs.
09:21 <ConfusionRift> I... suppose...
09:21 <Cepheid> There's a bunch of them. 3DNow!, MMX, SSE, SSE2, SSE3, SSE4, SSE4.1, SSE4.2, AVX, AVX2, AVX-512, etc. And then of course there is the proprietary libraries for video cards, such as, as Schism mentioned, PhysX, which is specific to nVidia.
09:21 <Cepheid> Any sort of reliance on these sorts of things can create problems when said features are not implemented, or not supported, by the computer.
09:22 <Cepheid> And yes, it is possible for a CPU to be lacking an extension that should be there.
09:22 <ConfusionRift> I know I know. PC world is weird like that. And, of course, no point on keeping specific bound instructions and processes when they are basically obsolete.
09:23 <Cepheid> Especially deprecated instruction sets.
09:23 <ConfusionRift> And then... retro gaming happens, and all goes kapoot, unless one can find some way to get everything running.
09:23 <Cepheid> Or, in the case of Intel, instruction sets you didn't make.
09:25 * ConfusionRift chuckles at the older games. "How can one visualize using a knife? Hmm... how about throwing it like a rock?!"
09:26 <Cepheid> I mean, there are functional benefits to using the extensions, but because of their lack of prevelence in many cases, using the more recent extensions is a dangerous proposition. If you want to use them, you're better off creating multiple versions of the executable that support different sets.
09:26 <Cepheid> At which point you just made your life a living hell.
09:28 <Cepheid> Many of said extensions have some arcane requirements that don't immediately translate to conventional, generic code.
09:28 <Cepheid> For example, to use AVX instructions, the addresses that you pass to them have to be multiples of some number, depending on the AVX set and the data type.
09:28 <Cepheid> Which is harder than it sounds.
09:29 <Cepheid> Because the conventional memory allocation routines do *NOT* allocate at those multiples.
09:29 * ConfusionRift lightly shakes Schism. "I'mma sowwyyyyyyyy!"
09:29 <Cepheid> So if you allocate a buffer of say, 800 floats, shove some data into them, then pass them to the AVX instructions, it'll probably crash because it expected the addresses to be multiples of 4, when the base memory buffer address is not aligned to a multiple of 4.
09:30 <ConfusionRift> Woooaaah... Steam. That's... hmmmm, should I?
09:30 * Cepheid had this happen when he was playing with AVX a couple weeks back.
09:30 <Cepheid> Had an array of 4000 floats, was testing the SSE square root functionality against the conventional C library square root function. The buffer was being allocated to some address that was a multiple of 2, instead of 4.
09:31 <ConfusionRift> From Far Cry 1 to Far Cry: Primal for $20.87.
09:31 <Cepheid> When I tried to pass the buffer, it'd crash. :D
09:31 <Cepheid> Oh, nice.
09:33 <ConfusionRift> Oh yeah, there are issues with memory as well. It's just a bunch of... well, it was a different structure that it was built on in comparison to now.
09:34 <Cepheid> Yeah, but that actually has less importance in regards to programming and coding than you think.
09:35 <Cepheid> The two biggest distinctions with RAM are Video RAM and System RAM.
09:35 <Cepheid> The two work differently, for various reasons.
09:35 <Cepheid> Beyond that..
09:36 <Cepheid> If you're an optimizing developer, you want to concern yourself with the various levels of cache. But in general, you'll only ever really worry about L1 and maybe L2.
09:36 <Cepheid> But dealing with the cache in programming is a bit of an arcane skill. I have some experience with it, but nothing major.
09:37 <Cepheid> RAM considerations also come into play when, again, you're dealing with extensions.
09:38 <Cepheid> Basically, address alignment is a concept wherein data is stored aligned to some multiple of a power of two.
09:38 <Cepheid> Usually, the size of the relevant data type.
09:39 <Cepheid> The purpose behind it is entirely performance related. The CPU has to do more work for mis-aligned data.
09:40 <Cepheid> Compilers are generally good about handling this though to ensure reasonable performance. In declaring and defining new data structures and classes, the compilers will automatically add padding between various bits of data to ensure that all the relevant data is aligned properly to avoid problems.
09:40 <Cepheid> It only ever becomes a problem if you start doing stuff that the compiler is NOT aware of.
09:41 <Cepheid> For, example, using CPU extension instructions. Like SSE. AVX.
09:42 <Cepheid> These instructions appear to be very, very specific about how they expect data(addresses, literal data, etc) to be passed to them.
09:43 <Cepheid> Again, the vectorized floating point square root instruction. It expected addresses of data passed to it to be a multiple of four(If you can divide the address by 4 with no remainder, you're good!) The memory allocator in use at the time was returning an address that was not a multiple of four.
09:43 <Cepheid> Updates to C and C++ have apparently added standardized functions to deal with this, but... yeah.
09:43 <Cepheid> They're not the easiest things to use.
09:45 <Cepheid> I actually found it somewhat interesting to see that the address returned by the allocator, despite specifying a data type of a set size, was returning a non-aligned address.
09:47 <Cepheid> Oooh. Mother's working days. That means both my parents will be gone this morning from at least 9 AM onwards.
09:47 * Cepheid gets hair trimmer out. A glint in her eye.
09:48 <Cepheid> But yeah, architectural-level considerations for programming are... AAAGJDHKSGHSJLKD
09:49 <Cepheid> You can use certain keywords to change the compiler's behaviour to ensure exact, specific details, but then you take a hit to performance for it.
09:50 *** Quits: Ali (Ali@Pony-b42e8t.4nua.5fca.1702.2600.IP) (Quit: Leaving)
09:50 <Cepheid> To give you an idea as to why alignment is critical.. You got an 8-byte integer, a 64-bit integer otherwise now known as a "long long" data type in C and C++. For simplicity, let's say it's stored at address 0.
09:51 <Cepheid> 0 % 8 = 0. It's aligned. So, the instruction to load it is simple. It's just a "Load 64-bit integer into register X" instruction. Simple enough.
09:51 <Cepheid> Let's change that address to 4. It's now mis-aligned. 4 % 8 = 4.
09:52 <Cepheid> Depending on architecture, it might not be a single instruction anymore.
09:54 <Cepheid> Trivial, terrible solution is "Load 64-bit integer at address 0 into register A", "Load 64-bit integer at address 8 into register B." "Shift register A to the left by 4 bytes." "Shift register B to the right by 4 bytes." "OR Register A with Register B and store result in Register A."
09:54 <Cepheid> Went from one instruction to five!
09:57 <Cepheid> And this is legitimately how some CPUs work. They only allow loading data from addresses that are aligned to their relevant data type size. 64-bit data types, this is 8 byte alignment, 32-bit, 4 byte, 16-bit, 2 byte, and 8-bit, 1 byte. If you attempt to read or write to addresses that are mis-aligned, they have to be split up into multiple load instructions, with shifting and bit operations involved.
09:57 <Cepheid> Which is why I hate the Internet, by the way.
09:57 <ConfusionRift> What THE F(bleep)?!
09:57 <Cepheid> Or any type of communications protocol with respect to networking, or inter-network or inter-process communication.
09:58 <Cepheid> Because all of these types of communication use what is known as "packed" data.
09:58 <Cepheid> Packed data is basically data that is intentionally mis-aligned to avoid wasting bandwidth on padding.
09:59 <ConfusionRift> So... I decided to give the troubleshooting one last hurrah. Used the launcher, updated, asked for a new Physix engine update, installed it... and now it's running.
09:59 <ConfusionRift> I'm so mad.

16:51 <Schism> ... "Disney World will no longer allow visitors to eat or drink while walking around the park." Close back down already, you nitwits.
16:53 <Nedemai> the moment you realize the entire US economy structure was gutted and redesigned around the largest profit margins without any sustainability...
16:54 * Schism attempts to pass a camel through the eye of a needle, but it just refuses to budge.
16:57 <Cepheid> Why are you trying to do thast?
16:58 <Schism> Mostly to see how difficult it really is for a rich person to get into heaven.
16:59 <Schism> Evidently, it's rather hard.
17:02 <Schism> Some translations refer to it as a twisted rope rather than a literal animal, but the meaning is roughly equivalent.
17:03 <Cepheid> Ah.
17:11 <Schism> Randomly, I would like to see at least one game make "Cameleopard" an entry in their list of creatures.

17:28 <Schism> "What the hell am I supposed to do with this giant feather?" "I dunno. Either tickle me mercilessly, or rip out my heart and weigh it against it." 17:41 <Cepheid> I wish it was Wednesday.
17:42 <Schism> Brain goes "I wish that were assembly," and now I'm imagining you disassembling the dog. Not in a violent way, just recoding the thing.
17:43 <LibrarianofHope> dogs love everyone
17:44 <Cepheid> My sister comes home on Wednesday. The dog will leave me alone.

18:40 <Nedemai> ti-83 graphing calculator doom
18:41 <Cepheid> Basically, if it's real, then it is simply the rendering engine telling a grid of threads to load their respective cores.
18:41 <Nedemai> thats actually... really simple to do
18:42 <Nedemai> and given doom can run on a potato, I imagine a single core would be fine to handle the actual engine
18:58 <Cepheid> More or less.
