08:45 * Schism mutters quiet imprecations about junk data and those who use hacks to remove it in a fashion which causes IMMENSE ISSUES.

08:46 <Schism> Oh, sorry, I said 'quiet'.

08:48 <Cepheid> Let me guess, the ISO is a trimmed version?

08:48 <Cepheid> I know NDS/3DS games have "trimming"

08:48 <Cepheid> I know this because I dealt with it.

08:50 <Cepheid> Though, in that case it's a bit different from removing unused or junk data.

08:50 <Schism> You are correct.

08:50 <Schism> And I know, it's a bit odd in each case.

08:51 <Cepheid> The ROM chips have a set size, and the games only use a certain amount of said ROM chips.  Dumpers of cartridge-based games will dump the entire chip, regardless of usage.

08:51 <Cepheid> So trimming is often done to the resultant images to cut down the size, and that's usually done by reading the NitroROM header, which stores the size of the game in bytes on the ROM chips.

08:52 <Cepheid> That said, given what I've been reading in regards to some approaches to antipiracy, I prefer to just deal with the full size.

08:54 <Cepheid> In the SNES era, apparently to do antipiracy checks, some games checked the SRAM size.

08:56 <Cepheid> Basically, it worked by writing to an address outside of the SRAM of the original cartridge, and then attempting to read another address.

08:56 <Cepheid> Because of address mirroring, if the value read back matched the value written, despite the different address, it was assumed to be running on a legit cart.

08:56 <Cepheid> If it didn't, it meant the cartridge had more SRAM than expected.

08:56 <Cepheid> And thus assumed the cartridge was a copier, or something else.

08:58 <Cepheid> I don't think that approach is usable on the NDS or 3DS, though, as the SRAM is accessed differently.

08:59 <Schism> It has also been ages since I've installed the VC Redist, so that's next on my list...

09:00 <Cepheid> Mmm, yeah, GBATEK says that the SRAM, regardless of form, is accessed via 1-bit serial bus.

09:05 <Cepheid> Well, that, or a typical "set address, set byte to indicate operation"

09:05 <Cepheid> Point is, it's not mapped to the memory space.

09:05 <Cepheid> So the above SNES approach wouldn't work.

09:05 <Schism> Unsurprising, as such things go.

09:05 <Cepheid> That said, some approaches were used, since Etrian Odyssey 3, for example, does have AP.

09:06 <Cepheid> Would cause the game to lock up in various situations, one such situation being the Abyssal God battle.

09:06 <Schism> Randomly, I should also get a BT adapter for this computer, on general principles.

09:07 <Cepheid> It's not a bad idea.

09:07 <Cepheid> Just, if you do get one, my advice?

09:07 <Cepheid> Don't plug it into the back.

09:08 <Cepheid> BT reliability goes down a bit if line-of-sight is broken, plus all the metal in the case can interfere with the signal.

09:08 <Schism> Heh.  Well, I do have front-panel USB, unlike some cases these days.  So that should be fine.

09:08 * Ali flops over, trying to copy a speed runners blueprints are annoying since they don't publish the things.

09:09 <Schism> Seems odd.  You'd think they'd at least give a general idea to other folks.  What're you trying to speedrun?

09:09 <Ali> Factorio

09:09 <Schism> Oh, those blueprints.

09:10 <Ali> And more of a "I want these interesting blueprints to breakdown how they work"

09:10 <Schism> That's sane.  Maybe ping them?  I suspect that if you're not looking to compete with them, they might be willing to share on those principles.

09:10 <Ali> This guy is able to 100% Factorio is under 7 hours

09:11 <Ali> Schism, you don't know me well enough.  I don't dare poke anyone about most things.

09:11 <Schism> I suppose I know you well enough...

09:12 <Ali> I mean that I'm scared to ever poke someone about certain things..

09:15 <Cepheid> Fun note, the NDS, when used improperly, can be considerably slower than the GBA.

09:15 <Cepheid> There's a bug with respect to memory accesses with the ARM9 CPU

09:16 <Schism> I am shocked, shocked, Cepheid.  What sort of developer would ever execute memory in such a fashion as to render the machine in question incapable of playing tic-tac-toe with Joshua?

09:16 <Schism> And then try to publish a game which behaves in such a manner?

09:17 <Cepheid> Officially, the CPU can only reach maximum performance(66MHz) when using cache and tcm.  It drops to 33MHz for all other memory accesses, but there's a bug.

09:18 <Cepheid> If the memory accesses are non-sequential, 3 waitcycles(That is, the CPU does nothing for 3 cycles, if I understand this correctly) are added.

09:18 <Cepheid> To every non-sequential memory access.

09:18 <Cepheid> This drops it's effective performance to around 8MHz.

09:18 <Cepheid> The GBA's 16MHz ARM7 CPU would perform better.

09:23 <Cepheid> Speaking of the GBA's ARM7 CPU, it exists in the NDS, for obvious reasons.  It's even accessible by NDS software.  But Nintendo never allowed access to it with it's SDK for NDS games.

09:28 <Cepheid> Interestingly, the NDS allows access to the GBA slot ROM even in NDS mode.

09:30 <Cepheid> Though, I don't know why you'd want to do that.  It's limited to 32MiB, while the interface for NDS cartridges can access up to...

09:30 <Schism> I want to say 512MiB, but that's probably not right.

09:31 <Cepheid> 4GiB.

09:33 <Cepheid> Let's see..

09:34 <Cepheid> Yeah, 4GiB.

09:34 <Cepheid> The ROM address size for a "read ROM" command is 32 bits.

09:37 <Cepheid> Interestingly, the "read ROM" command is used in some AP.

09:39 <Cepheid> The ROM data is mirrored past the end of the ROM chip size.  So if you tried to access data at 0xFFFFFh, and the ROM size was 0xFFFFh, it'll access 0xFh, as expected.  Similar to the SRAM thing above.

09:39 <Cepheid> So, if you read an address outside of the valid range, and compare it to an expected value, the code is likely running on a cart with a larger capacity than the game itself ran on.

09:39 <Cepheid> Er, compare it to an expected value and get the wrong value*

09:40 <Cepheid> Hilariously, this form of AP has problems.  Especially in the SNES era.

09:40 * Schism randomly drops an emerald tablet on an altar, and is quite soundly rebuffed via the spawning of three monsters.

09:41 <Cepheid> Basic gist of the problem:  At power on, the memory of the SNES is in a random, unknown state.  More often than not, this random unknown state is consistent between power ons.

09:42 <Cepheid> But the catch is that, if the memory isn't initialized before it's checked, among other things, then it's possible that it'll read back random garbage, and that random garbage may just happen to trigger the AP.

09:42 <Cepheid> Or worse.

09:42 <Cepheid> A debug functionality.

09:42 <Cepheid> This happened with Super Mario All-stars.  Super Mario Brothers 3 on that cartridge had debug code left in.  If a certain memory address is a specific value, the debug code is enabled.

09:43 <Cepheid> Hey, guess what value isn't initialized before it's read, and may contain a random garbage value?

09:43 <Schism> Hehe.

09:43 <Schism> This has of course been used to great aplomb by folks.

09:44 <Cepheid> So yeah, there was reports of early versions of the cartridge having a debug mode enabled by mistake.

09:44 <Cepheid> But it was more a case of "They just didn't do things properly."

09:44 *** Joins: Golden (uid250033@Pony-sd90bk.tooting.irccloud.com)

09:45 <Cepheid> There's a reason I dislike how C/C++ handles defined and declared variables.

09:45 <Cepheid> There's no default initialization.

09:45 <Schism> Oh yeah.  Ew.

09:45 <Cepheid> So, you could define a variable in a function such as "int aVariable;", and it'll contain random garbage.

09:45 <Cepheid> If you want to get around that, you have to explicitly set it to 0.

09:46 <Cepheid> Can't imagine how many exploits are a result of that.

09:46 <Schism> No kidding.  Especially as, when you say 'random garbage'...

09:47 <Cepheid> In this case, yeah.  It could actually be leftover data, among other things.

09:50 <Cepheid> I mean, I understand the reasoning.  Performance.  Initializing memory has a cost.  But as it is, current practices suggest we initialize memory anyway.

09:51 <Schism> As they should.

09:54 <Schism> Where was I in this game--oh yes.  I was on the island with the wicker man.  ...and I should probably start over.

09:58 * Schism still climbs this zone made of Extremely Dense Rock, and is summarily obliterated by lightning-spewing crystals. "Really, I don't know what I was expecting."

10:03 <Cepheid> I find it interesting that the game has a number of surface areas to explore, while the lower areas in the mountain don't seem to have anything like that.

10:05 <Schism> I'm pretty sure that most of the surface is kind of 'endgame' material.

10:09 <Cepheid> Given what I saw of the pyramid boss, yeah.

10:10 <Cepheid> Thing kinda looks like that Spore boss from Super Metroid, only with numerous legs attached to it, and extremely deadly attacks.

14:26 <ADragonDreaming> whatcha playin'?

14:26 <Cepheid> Noita.

14:26 <ADragonDreaming> rogue-like?

14:26 <Schism> Very rogue-like.

14:26 <Cepheid> Yeah, but strangely one I'm willing to waste time on.

14:26 <Schism> Possibly more than a little Spelunky-ish.

14:26 <Finwe> Yup.

14:27 <ADragonDreaming> Care to do some hunting?

14:27 <Finwe> It's duck season, innit?

14:27 <Finwe> Or wabbit season?

14:28 <Schism> Noita is, thankfully, a game where you can take a moment to pause.  Though Adra, you might have to wait until Cephy gets down to a Holy Mountain.

14:28 <Cepheid> Sure, lemme finish up this run.

14:29 * Schism yawns, and fills up her laundry basket.

14:30 * Finwe puts a cat into Schism's laundry basket.

14:30 <Schism> Cephy: I hope you're prepared to complete the run, now.

14:32 <Finwe> The chance of dying is inversely proportional to how urgently you need to do something else.

14:33 <Cepheid> Yep.

14:33 <Cepheid> And I just died as a result.

14:33 <Cepheid> Lemme go get my stuff for voice chat and hearing.

14:35 <ADragonDreaming> I was on wrong network

14:40 <Cepheid> Swear, I'm gonna kill those two.

14:40 <Cepheid> First, my mother makes a joke about how she was fired from her job.

14:40 <Cepheid> Then my dad decides to be an annoying git, and intentionally get in my way as I try to move around the kitchen.

14:41 <Schism> I'm going to take a 58-minute nap.  This time, I know it'll only be that long, because I have some freaking laundry.

14:42 <ADragonDreaming> nap well!

14:46 <Cepheid> Right, sorry about the delay, did a bunch of other quick stuff as well.

14:46 <ADragonDreaming> nae worries. I was setting up equipment.

14:47 <Cepheid> That is such a weird interface behavior.  If you search for a session created by a friend, but none of your friends are playing, it'll give a "No sessions found"

14:47 <Cepheid> Which is fine.

14:47 <Cepheid> But if a player is invisible, it'll show the session list, but it'll be empty.

14:47 <ADragonDreaming> odd

14:48 <Cepheid> It probably doesn't know how to handle the invisible case.

14:48 * Lumindia_ boops Ceph's snoot

14:48 * Cepheid watches as her nose explodes.

14:48 <Lumindia_> oh dear

14:49 <Cepheid> Voice chat, ADra?
