00:25 <Cepheid> Guh, that's annoying.  So I can't get the system to recognize a middle mouse button press to activate the wheel.

00:27 <Cepheid> It's like something is interfering.

00:39 <Cepheid> Seems the software's a bit finicky.

00:41 <Cepheid> That said, the sensitivity of the radial wheel leaves a bit to be desired.

00:56 <Cepheid> By the by, Nitro, random question.  Something you said the other day, I can't remember what exactly, caught my attention, and made me curious.  You live in Canada, by chance?

00:56 <NitroTheFurry> No why

00:56 <NitroTheFurry> I have a few friends up there

00:59 <Cepheid> Like I said, I don't recall the reason.  I just remember you saying something that implied being in Canada, or at least near it.

00:59 <Cepheid> Or, possibly that, having friends in Canada as well.

00:59 <NitroTheFurry> Hm, now I am curious

00:59 <NitroTheFurry> Do you know when

01:00 <Cepheid> I unfortunately don't recall the date or time.

01:00 <NitroTheFurry> Darn

01:00 <Cepheid> Which makes it complicated.  In any case, it's moot.

01:00 <Cepheid> I was more just curious because I like to get a rough idea of the number of Canadians around here.  We have more than one would think.

01:01 <NitroTheFurry> Ah, well it would explain why everyone's so nice lol

01:02 <Cepheid> No, we're just nice in general.  Also, I'm not as nice as one would think.  I have a... volatile temper.

01:29 <TormentedDragon> oh?

01:30 *** Joins: Jackie (Jarva@Pony-qhu.kqe.18.182.IP)

01:31 <Cepheid> The biggest issue I had was slinger aiming while the bow is drawn.

01:31 <Cepheid> When the bow is drawn, slinger aiming is forced to be a toggle.

01:31 <Cepheid> And it uses a different key from simply aiming the slinger.

01:32 <Cepheid> So, to get around this, I used the mouse configuration program to create a convoluted macro which, when I press it, will make it act like the "Hold Button" mode for slinger, in either "Weapon Drawn" or "Weapon Sheathed" mode.

01:32 <Cepheid> So now, in either mode, I just have the press and hold the button, like when I'm using a melee weapon, to pull out the slinger and use it.

01:34 <TormentedDragon> noice.

01:34 <Cepheid> That was harder than it should have been.

01:35 <Cepheid> Biggest issue is it requires a custom keybinding profile for bow-and-arrow ranged, and a custom profile ON THE MOUSE.

01:38 <Cepheid> Yep, seen it.  Cats aren't stupid.

01:39 * Cepheid saves this keyboard loadout.

01:39 <Cepheid> Never.  Again.

01:41 <Cepheid> Interestingly, I cannot, through GHub, change what scrolling up or down with the mouse wheel does.

01:43 <TormentedDragon> never again?

01:43 <Cepheid> Basically, I'm never modifying this particular configuration ever again.

01:44 <Cepheid> That was frustrating.

01:45 <TormentedDragon> aha

01:47 <Cepheid> Anyways, I'm done with all that, so back to doing stuff.

07:01 <Cepheid> On one hand, I'm terrified.  On the other hand, I kind of want to know what happened at a water bowl that would require that Spitfire lose a whisker.

07:11 * NitroTheFurry feels like their missing context

07:16 <Cepheid> We have two cats here, Tizzy and Spitfire.

07:17 <Cepheid> The two don't necessarily get along well 100%.  They tolerate one another, but they're each jealous of one another with respect to certain people.

07:17 <Cepheid> As a result, we have separate food bowls and water bowls.

07:18 <Cepheid> Both shed an incredible amount, and I regularly have to empty the bowls out, usually twice a day, because of fur collecting in the water.

07:18 <Cepheid> Anyhoo, this time around, there was a cat whisker in one of the bowls, the one that belongs to Tizzy.  Given the color of the whisker, it belonged to Spitfire.  Cats do *NOT* lose whiskers easily.

07:19 <NitroTheFurry> Oh

07:19 <NitroTheFurry> Oh my

07:19 <Cepheid> So either it was a rare case where they shed the whisker, or the two got into a tussle over the water bowl, and Tizzy removed the whisker.

07:19 <Cepheid> I'm betting on the latter.  Whiskers, again, don't shed that frequently, if at all, given they're used for sensing stuff the cat can't see around their face and head.

11:28 * Dappled wouldn't make the mistake of most and making perfect shiny pokemon, just wants one.

11:29 <Golden> Finally reconnected

11:29 <ConfusionRift> But it's mostly games that leave their saves on memory, rather than on the card itself. There are ways to finagle with all this, but for the most part you'll have to decompile it as a readable format in a way, and recompile it for the DS to read.

11:29 <ConfusionRift> Pokemon is really tricky.

11:29 <Golden> Got so wrapped up watching Animaniacs I got disconnected, and my irc cloud kept timing me out when I attempted to reconnect

11:30 <Dappled> Animaniacs are good.

11:30 <Finwe> If you have a way to read the memory cards on your computer, then you can also edit the files.

11:30 <Dappled> Yeah, that, I need that.

11:30 <Golden> Speaking of pokemon real quick. I have all the dexes in Sword complete

11:33 <Dappled> My other option is to figure out these DNS tricks so that I can redirect traffic and to trigger the events I want.

11:34 <ConfusionRift> Apparently, there's something called an NDS Adapter, which lets you copy and restore DS savefiles. It also has some editing software for said saves.

11:36 <ConfusionRift> Huh, this was made with Pokemon in mind.

11:38 <ConfusionRift> Said device is $30 from what I can see. Now, this seems compatible with games from Diamond to B/W 2. Anything beyond that is likely not as possible, simply because of how Nintendo is handling those games and the corresponding Pokemon.

11:39 <Dappled> Someone made a server to trigger pokemon events for gen 4-5, but for having all at once it's the mercy of the RNG.

11:39 <ConfusionRift> The other option is a cheat device, but they can break things.

11:40 <Dappled> I mean, if nintendo weren't buttheads about this stuff in the first place, players wouldn't need to resort to hacking.

11:40 <ConfusionRift> This is why I hate event things, especially in Pokemon.

11:42 <ConfusionRift> The fact that the game still has something that in order to complete one has to take part in an event that happened years ago is dumb.

18:07 <Cepheid> No matter the fact of whether or not the language has "polite" and "formal" forms, in casual conversation outside of work and such, native speakers are going to curse and swear.

18:07 <Cepheid> And without knowledge of the local customs for cursing and swearing, you probably won't understand what's being uttered, or how it's insulting, vulgar, or impolite, among other issues.

18:20 <Cepheid> So, to start:  Humanity finds an unusual creature in the ocean, it's composed of a colony of large, single-celled entities, which they call Aragami.  Each one takes a different role in the body, usually a part of it, like a fang, or an eye, or the core of it which controls the colony.  Anyhow, spontaneously, huge-arse spikes erupt from the surface of the Earth, and following it, a flood of Aragami, which begin consuming

18:20 <Cepheid> people, structures, and so on.

18:20 <ADragonDreaming> The Moon is actually a disguised spaceship?

18:20 <Cepheid> Nah.

18:20 <ADragonDreaming> (not TTGL, then)

18:20 <Cepheid> ttgl?

18:21 <ADragonDreaming> Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann

18:21 <Cepheid> Ah.

18:21 <Dappled> Only the greatest anime of all time.

18:22 <Cepheid> No, what happens is over the course of the game, you learn about a special Aragami.  It's pretty obvious it'd happen sooner or later, and they alude to the idea constantly anyways.  It's a human-type.  Takes the form of a human, etc.  Not quite perfect though, and it's particularly child-like.  They name it Shio, and try to raise it like a human.  Anyhoo...

18:22 <Cepheid> At the end of the first game's primary storyline, Shio is captured and used as the core of a giant Aragami prophesized to consume the Earth and restart everything.

18:23 <Cepheid> Unfortunately, Shio came to love the people it was with, so at the critical moment, instead of consuming the Earth, it goes "Oh, hey, the moon looks like a giant, tasty cake/treat/etc.  I'll eat that instead."

18:23 <Cepheid> And then she eats it.

18:23 <Cepheid> As a result, the Moon looks a little... different.

18:23 <ADragonDreaming> Does it look like a cak?

18:24 <Cepheid> I don't recall what it looks like after she eats it.  Just that, if you look at it in later games and find it looks odd, keep in mind that's the reason why.

18:24 <Cepheid> Interestingly?

18:24 <Cepheid> Part of the plan to restart the world included a bunch of rich people being selected for an Ark project that would have had the selected people living on the Moon while the Earth was consumed.

18:25 <Cepheid> Had the project gone forward as it was, Shio would have literally, as we keep telling ourselves to do, "eat the rich"

18:26 <Cepheid> After that, the story pretty much follows a singular character who may or may not have been mentioned in later games.  I'm not sure, but it's implied by the OST of the second game, at the least.

18:28 <ADragonDreaming> gotcha

18:28 <Cepheid> It was more of a "What happened to this character after he went missing?"

18:28 <Cepheid> Because there was evidence of his survival that the player would know about, but not the people in the organization that your character is a part of.

18:29 <Cepheid> And, putting it lightly, he was important to the organization.

18:30 <Cepheid> The average lifespan of a God Eater, a member of an organization that fights the Aragami, is pretty short for a few reasons:  1)  They either get killed and eaten by an Aragami, or 2)  The method in which God Eaters are made ultimately kills them.  He was one of the types approaching #2.  And he was damned good at his job, too.

18:31 <Cepheid> He was also the happy-go-lucky charismatic keep-your-chin-up type, so everyone in general just liked him.

18:32 <Cepheid> In any case, outside of all that...

18:33 <Cepheid> God Eater is basically a much faster paced Monster Hunter.  Possibly a bit more chaotic, too.

18:33 <ADragonDreaming> Aye

18:33 <Cepheid> Also much more apparent it's post-apocalyptic.

18:33 <ADragonDreaming> "Rise above a desolated world."

18:34 <Cepheid> It's...  I wouldn't say easier.  It definitely feels like it is early on, because of the fact that you have AI companions that you can bring along.

18:34 <Cepheid> But even taking that into consideration, once you start getting into rank 10 or higher and such, the difficulty gets along the lines of G-Rank or higher from Monster Hunter.

18:34 <Cepheid> Even WITH AI companions.

18:35 <Cepheid> I wonder if they kept the Rage Burst from GE2.

18:35 <Cepheid> That was an interesting little mechanic, from what little I learned of it.

18:36 <Cepheid> Your God Arc, for starters, can transform.  Melee or Ranged weapon form.  You can switch between them at will, with no limitations.  Granted, your limiting factor for the ranged form is a form of ammo.

18:36 <Cepheid> But there's a third thing you can do to recover that ammo, as well as power yourself up.

18:37 <ADragonDreaming> Hit the monster?

18:37 <Cepheid> If you stun a monster, or, through certain input combos during a combo attack, you can cause a giant, monstrous, toothy mouth to grow out of the God Arc and take a bite out of the monster.

18:38 <Cepheid> In doing so, you consume some of the cells from the monster, which restores ammo, and provides a temporary status boost.  How strong of a boost depends on the manner in which you do it.

18:38 <Cepheid> If you do it during a combo attack, it's a smaller boost, but you get better windows for doing it, as it's a quick snap bite attack.

18:38 <Cepheid> The other approach is to go up to the monster, and specifically charge the bite attack.

18:39 <Cepheid> This is also how you acquire items from the monster after it's dead.  It's actually a better approach compared to the carving of MH.

18:39 <Cepheid> Since it collects all the items in one motion.

18:39 <ADragonDreaming> As long as the camera controls fine I should be fine, once I eventually pick it up.

18:39 <Cepheid> And, in single-player, you can actually skip the waiting period between monster death and end of mission.

18:39 <Cepheid> None of this waiting 60 seconds.

18:40 <Cepheid> My experiences with GE1 and GE2 on the PC suggest that the controls are actually fine.

18:40 <Cepheid> I may actually play GE2 and GE3 side-by-side.  But if you intend to get GE3 at some point, I may wait on that.

18:40 <Cepheid> And just go with GE2, maybe even stream it.

18:42 <Cepheid> The game also has one other interesting mechanic, which I'm not sure is shown in trailers and such.

18:42 <Cepheid> The gun forms.

18:42 <Cepheid> There are three basic forms, at least, in GE1 and GE2.  Light, Heavy, Sniper, though under different names as it's been some time since I played it, and can't recall.  Anyways..

18:43 <Cepheid> They each affect the cost of the bullets that you use, which is the interesting part.

18:43 <Cepheid> The bullets are customizable.  Big time.

18:43 <Cepheid> You start off by specifying a base bullet type.  Which can include "elemental straight shot" "elemental curving shot" "explosion" and other fun bits.

18:44 <Cepheid> You can then create a complex tree of different effects that occur based on different things.  Like, after that base bullet strikes a target, you can have it trigger an explosion, or another bullet that flies off in a different direction.

18:45 <Cepheid> Of course, the more complex the bullet, the greater the cost of firing it.  That's where the forms come in.  Each bullet and effect is associated with a gun type.  If the types match, the bullet cost goes down a bit.

18:45 <ADragonDreaming> cost in ammo?

18:46 <Cepheid> Yeah.

18:47 <Cepheid> The God Arcs are living weapons.  Quite literally, they're Aragami that have been leashed and chained to create a transforming weapon.  When you fire a bullet, you're expending some of the weapon's living cells.  Hence why it can A)  Eat, and B)  Eating restores the ammo, because it's eating other Aragami to regenerate it's lost cells.

18:47 <Cepheid> You're actually advised to abuse it, too.  Besides the obvious of letting you keep your distance, the bullets can be quite powerful.

18:48 <Cepheid> Like, a typical weapon might hit for 100-200 damage on a part.  But with a proper bullet, you could easily do up to 400 damage.

18:48 <Cepheid> Oh, and as an added benefit...

18:48 <Cepheid> You'll like this.  Every weapon comes with a shield.

18:49 <Cepheid> And you *WILL* be using it.

18:49 <Cepheid> They take some time to deploy, though.  Obviously, smaller ones are deployed much faster.  But the larger ones can block stronger attacks, and offer better defensive stats.

18:50 <ADragonDreaming> nice

18:50 <Cepheid> That said, in GE1, you were locked in place when they deployed, so no moving forward defensively.

18:50 <Cepheid> That may have changed in the third game.

18:51 <Cepheid> In any case...  Mmm...  With Black Friday upon us, I wouldn't be surprised if the game goes back on sale soon.

18:51 <ADragonDreaming> quite possibly!

18:51 <Cepheid> I picked it up the other day on sale on Humble Bundle.  I would have passed it onto you, but you weren't around, and when I noticed it, the sale was about to end in like, 15 minutes.

18:52 <ADragonDreaming> aye

18:52 <Cepheid> In fact, I imagine that's how you noticed it.  When I bought the game, heh.

18:52 <ADragonDreaming> I saw you mention in IRC, yeah

18:52 <Cepheid> And that too.

18:53 <ADragonDreaming> hm hm hm

18:53 <Cepheid> In retrospect, I should have grabbed a copy for you as well.

18:54 <ADragonDreaming> No worries.

18:55 <ADragonDreaming> It looks like I need to go on a series of Diablos hunts to get that weapon upgraded.

18:55 <Cepheid> That's fiiiiine with me.

18:55 <Cepheid> I need some Diablos parts for something.  I forget what, I just remember that I need them parts.

18:55 <Cepheid> I'll be on shortly.  I'm gonna go take a really quick shower.  I smell.

18:58 * ADragonDreaming joins an investigation for a tempered Diablos

19:05 <Cepheid> You are a brave man.

19:05 <Cepheid> That said, last night's Tempered Black Diablos hunt makes me want to hunt Tempered monsters a bit more frequently.

19:07 <ADragonDreaming> I'm not that brave. The quest leader has MR 459.

19:08 <ADragonDreaming> and also made frequent use of screamer pods.

19:08 <Cepheid> Heh.
