03:33 <RazorSharpFang> Schism, you mean peat?

03:47 <Schism> RSF: Maybe?  Looks like a stockyard which wound up having concentrated organics in the soil.

03:48 <Schism> They stuck a candy thermometer in to see what the temperature was.  It melted.  https://www.abc.net.au/news/rural/2019-02-13/why-is-the-ground-burning-on-an-outback-nt-cattle-station/10802676

03:52 * Ali resumes floppage over RazorSharpFang

04:00 <RazorSharpFang> Schism, Peat is a flammable solid-thingy because of all the organics in it. Alternatively, it could have been coke or charcoal in the soil.

04:01 <Schism> Aye, and when there's a heatwave, if something touches it off, well, there it goes.

04:01 <Schism> But seriously, exploding trees weren't bad enough for you folks, now the ground itself wants to get in on the action.

04:04 <RazorSharpFang> I hear that eucalyptus oil if processed can be used as a diesel alternative.

10:30 * Unixkitty hmmmmmmmmms in temptation

10:30 * Unixkitty accepts as replacement to second coffee of the day

10:31 * Schism nodnods. "Note, this may be stronger than coffee."

10:33 <Unixkitty> Not something I have very often, but I do love me some strong tea. As far as I can tell most people consider the strength at which I prefer my tea to be too strong.

10:33 <Unixkitty> I simply can't stand the diluted water most consider "tea"

10:34 <AppleDash> There's a reason they call it England water

10:35 <Unixkitty> That could be one reason :P

10:35 <Schism> Well, let me put it this way.  I boiled these teabags for about 10 minutes.

10:35 <Unixkitty> Personally never bothered researching exactly how strong "normal" tea is, so speaking purely from experience.

10:36 <Unixkitty> That's 10 minutes too short, Schism.

10:36 <AppleDash> I do usually drink tea as something mild to relax rather than something to attempt to chemically injure myself

10:36 <AppleDash> So I probably drink it too weak :P

10:37 <Unixkitty> I don't actually use teabags, but when I put my kettle on, I usually get back to it in about 20 minutes

10:37 <Unixkitty> Sometimes less has to do if I'm having any at work, but that's a rare thing since I simply can't be bothered to brew properly here.

10:38 * Unixkitty violently caffeinates Schism

10:38 <AppleDash> I had some interesting herbal tea the other day

10:38 <AppleDash> It was aggressively blue

10:38 <AppleDash> And apparently turns pink when you add lemon

10:38 <Unixkitty> ...blue?

10:38 <AppleDash> Unfortunately we had no lemon. We are also hoping that it tastes better when you add lemon.

10:39 <AppleDash> https://www.wikiwand.com/en/Butterfly_pea_flower_tea

10:39 <AppleDash> Apparently this is it!

10:39 <AppleDash> the color is also apparently purple, not pink

10:40 <Unixkitty> I seem to be unfamiliar with that particular herb

10:40 <Unixkitty> Also I can't help but comment on the utter silliness of it's name.

10:41 <Schism> Unixkitty: Well, I have some ultra-strong Irish Breakfast, but it's actually got a flavour to it, so I'm saving it for actual pots.

10:47 <Unixkitty> Boo, steam, why did you fail to sync my savefile...

10:48 * Filly_Nightmares purrs and uses AppleDash as a bed

11:05 <Unixkitty> Nuuu not the savefile!

11:08 <ConfusionRift> "I decided to record the audio for this video on a separate system, otherwise you would only be hearing the PowerMac drowning all sound." | (BFFFFFFFTTTTTTT!!!)

11:18 * Schism knocks back another cup of tea, looks at the world around him, and lets out a terrified scream.

11:21 <RazorSharpFang> Oof, I'm really tired now.

11:44 * ConfusionRift was reminded of something.

11:44 <ConfusionRift> I never got to continue CrossCode.

11:45 <Schism> Hm, I should finish that too.

11:47 <ConfusionRift> And Hollow Knight expanded, with probably a sequel coming up.

11:51 * ConfusionRift checks the backlog and starts laughing.

11:51 <ConfusionRift> Poor Emillie. :P

11:51 <Schism> Bugs?  >.>

Why would you fight the bugs, Lea?!" (bug stands on two) "What is this? Are they walking?!" (pulls out two swords, and just slices everyone) "Are those swords? Why would these bugs have swords?!"

11:59 <ConfusionRift> (The bug is dead!) | "Are they gone?! Please tell me they're gone?!" | (sees another and attacks it) | "Noooo! Not again!!!"

13:38 <Unixkitty> "She has a lot of appeal for folks who aren't quite hoarders, but definitely have too much shit. She talks about only keeping "useful" things that are actually useful, and only keeping sentimental things that actually bring you joy."

13:39 <Unixkitty> Do people not get taught these kinds of things as children?

13:39 <Koopz> idk how big of an issues hoarding currently is but... well... i guess if it's helping people...

13:39 <Unixkitty> This sounds like common sense

13:39 <Koopz> you'd expect that

13:40 <Unixkitty> I can't see why it's not

13:40 <Koopz> "Teleshopping networks hate her"

13:40 <Unixkitty> But then I suppose I don't know any people that would keep too many things they don't actually need

13:40 <Unixkitty> I mean why even do that

13:41 <Koopz> does digital data count?

13:41 <Koopz> because i got a metric ton of that stuff

13:42 <Unixkitty> Hmm, I doubt it's actually "helping" most of those people per se... but rather it simply appeals to their inner instinct to be better which they won't necessarily care about to realize

13:42 <Koopz> if i were to clean up my HDDs i wouldn't know what to do with all the space ;D

13:42 <Unixkitty> It might, Koopz

13:42 <Unixkitty> Digital stuff is still... well, stuff

13:43 <Unixkitty> Photos, old documents, important notes for things you enjoyed ages ago

13:43 <Koopz> i might get anti-claustrophobic if i'd see disk usage bars in "my computer" which aren't red

13:44 <Unixkitty> Well, if disk space is there for anything, it's to be used that's for sure

13:44 <Unixkitty> As long as it's not just being filled for the sake of it :P

13:44 <Unixkitty> You know, now that I think about it I do have a bunch of old folders I probably no longer need

13:44 <Koopz> There's a lot of stuff i would never watch a second time... but instead of deleting it i just buy a new HDD

13:45 <Unixkitty> But that's basically the only thing I can think about... and that data doesn't even take 10 GB

13:45 <Unixkitty> Why?

13:45 <Koopz> hmm... "for bad times"

13:46 <Unixkitty> There are only so many slots in your computer case :P

13:46 <Koopz> i *might* replace 4TB with 10TB when i'm running out of slots xD

13:46 <Unixkitty> Well, nowadays most things can be simply redownloaded if they come up for one reason or another

13:46 <Unixkitty> Hahaha, good thinking

13:47 <Koopz> i fear that all that stuff might not be accessible at some point anymore

13:47 <Unixkitty> But then again this comes from me being used to always having good internet

13:47 <Unixkitty> Things like TV shows and books likely will be available somewhere for a very very long time

13:48 <Unixkitty> It is art after all, there will always be demand for it, even if it shifts around as time passes

13:49 <Koopz> hmm... idk

13:49 <Koopz> old stuff tends to hide behind private sources at some point

13:49 <Koopz> or are only retrieveable over obscure ways

13:50 <Koopz> i honestly thought that the really old episodes of Detective Conan were lost for a while until i found a specific IRC channel on Rizon

13:51 <Unixkitty> You know, perhaps this is one of the cases Kondo's methods and ideas could be useful for

13:51 <Unixkitty> Sounds like precisely the application for dilemmas of whether one should strive to keep this kind of thing or that

13:52 <Koopz> i'm sharing all of my stuff via Plex with a few friends though

13:52 <Unixkitty> Maybe the fact that we're in a digital age is what ends up fueling most people's habit of this sort

13:53 <Unixkitty> Ooh, nice of you

13:53 <Koopz> i got access to their libraries in return

13:53 <Unixkitty> Does add another layer of vailidity to keeping a level of things

13:53 <Unixkitty> Heh :P

13:53 <Koopz> oh not in that sense

13:53 <Koopz> they're streaming from my NAS, therefore can watch the stuff i got

13:54 <Koopz> no physical copy on their side

13:54 <Unixkitty> I do know what Plex is

13:54 <Koopz> oh you mean it like i don't have to get the stuff my friends have, therefore having space for other stuff

13:54 <Schism> Phew.

13:54 <Schism> The Monkey King fight was... tricky.  So I lost the race, ah well.

13:54 <Unixkitty> Which is why I mentioned keeping instead of holding on to

13:55 <Schism> Erk.  Sorry, I mean... well, it's a fight.

13:55 <Unixkitty> Mmhm

13:55 * Unixkitty applies instant matter to Schism's face

13:56 <Schism> Hah.  AFTER the fight, they tell you how to do it the other way... oh well.

13:57 <Schism> >_>

13:57 * Schism saves, then tries the fight the other way.

13:57 <Unixkitty> Well it is supposed to feel natural, is it not? :P

13:58 <Unixkitty> I assume someone tells you about another way because they've done it differently

13:59 <Koopz> >always watches video guides before boss fights in order to not be the dumb first-timer holding back his party members

14:01 <Unixkitty> Haha just last night we were trying to cheese a boss fight in a raid and our debuffer could not for the life of him figure out how to hit the boss so the debuff would actually apply

14:01 <Unixkitty> Ended up looking up a couple of videos and sending to him

14:01 <Unixkitty> Got it on third try xD

14:04 <Schism> Hmmm.  They /say/ that's the way to do it...

14:04 * Schism can't seem to beat this boss that way, so... yeah.

14:06 <Unixkitty> Must be a joke!

14:07 <Koopz> my old WoW guild used to have a solid tactic against everything: pull together and fist

14:12 <Unixkitty> Sounds like a bunch of TITANS

14:15 <Schism> Ohey.

14:16 * Schism switched from a defensive build to an attack build, fought the boss again -- and this time beat Emelie to the punch. o3o

14:16 <Unixkitty> ...build?

14:16 <Schism> Well, loadout.

14:16 <Schism> Armor set and specials.

14:17 <Unixkitty> Ah.

14:17 <Koopz> if it won't die using brute force it took several weeks until the movement legasthenics finally managed to not screw up

14:19 <Koopz> progressing dragonsoul back in Cataclysm with 25 people was kinda fun though

14:24 <Unixkitty> Never played WoW, but did take part in a raid or few back when Lineage 2 was popular

14:28 <Schism> A recent raid in FFXIV is... interesting.  First case in which there are more than 30 people, and it's the highest-of-the-high-end.  Even just GETTING to it requires a ton of grinding.

21:15 <Cepheid> Apparently, sundials disappearing and no longer being relavent will result in us failing to understand how GPS works and other such frivolous beliefs.

21:19 <ADragonHoarding> well, it _can_ be said that if one understands how a sundial works, any Flat Earth model is immediately shown to be mathematically incorrect.

21:19 <Cepheid> There are a myriad of easier ways though, I'm sure.

21:20 <Cepheid> The article even suggests having knowledge of sundials can help build space ships or self-driving cars.  This article has to be a joke.

21:23 <ADragonHoarding> There are, but shadows are how an ancient mathematician came to the conclusion that the earth was round long before it was able to be observed directly in any fashion

21:23 <ADragonHoarding> Of course those other claims are rather ... outlandish

21:24 <Cepheid> Apparently this news site is a reputable one.

21:24 <ADragonHoarding> not sure how understanding the earth's rotation and how a shadow functions with the gnomon would translate to thrust calculations to escape earth's gravity, or engineering to survive a vacuum

21:24 <Cepheid> And the article is not listes under any jokes section.  So this article is indeed dead serious.

21:24 *** Joins: Lumindia (Lumindia@is.a.miner.pony)

21:24 <ADragonHoarding> is it an opinion piece?

21:25 <Cepheid> Does not appear to be so.

21:27 <Cepheid> Presumably knowledge of sundials helps with sciency stuff because the math involved can be used to locate yourself on the planet.  Not sure how this translates to spaceship travel.  At best, GPS stuff.  At best.

21:31 <Cepheid> That said I don't think GPS relies on sundials or math related to them.  Pretty sure a lot of it has to do with their geosynchronous orbits, knowledge of their positions in relation to the Earth, and databases of information.  With some math to do translations.

21:32 <Cepheid> GPS probably has more to do with a sextant rather than a sundial.

22:30 <LibrarianofHope> yet a looot of people think canada is harmless

22:30 <Cepheid> The other reason being that the royalty was taking refuge in Canada at the time, and when one of them went into labour, they wanted their child to be a Dutch citizen.
